Three-dimensional linear elasticity 5
5.1 Examples Example 5.1 Consider again the measurement system for determination of the strains of the ground in an oil-extraction area, as discussed in example 2.8. The strain of the ground in the considered area was determined as ε = 2.0 10 4 e x e x +2.9 10 4 ( e x e y + e y e x )+4.0 10 4 e y e y a. Compute the stress tensor in this area, if the soil can be described as an isotropic linear elastic material with Young s modulus E = 30MPa and Poisson s ratio ν = 0.4. The isotropic linear elastic constitutive relation expressed in the engineering elastic moduli E and ν has the form σ = Eν (1+ν)(1 2ν) tr(ε)i+ E 1+ν ε Substitution of the strain tensor ε into this expression gives (with tr(ε) = 6 10 4 ) ( 6Eν σ = (1+ν)(1 2ν) + 2E ) 10 4 e x e x + 2.9E 1+ν 1+ν 10 4 ( e x e y + e y e x ) ( 6Eν + (1+ν)(1 2ν) + 4E ) 10 4 6Eν e y e y + 1+ν (1+ν)(1 2ν) 10 4 e z e z Substitution of the given values for E and ν gives σ = 30 e x e x +6.21( e x e y + e y e x )+34.29 e y e y +25.71 e z e z kpa Consider next the pipe passing through the area. The normal (axial) strain in the pipe was computed in example 2.8 and equals ε nn (l) = 5.01 10 4. b. Assuming a uniaxial stress state, compute the normal (axial) stress σ nn (l) in the pipe, if the pipe is made from steel with Young s modulus E = 210GPa. For a uniaxial stress state (simple tension) the only non-zero stress component in the axial direction equals the axial strain times Young s modulus: σ (l) nn = Eε (l) nn = 105.21 MPa Example 5.2 Beschouw het koppelstuk tussen twee ronde buizen van verschillende diameter uit voorbeeld 2.7, zie Figuur 5.1.

5.2 Exercises Exercise 5.1 The strain state in the rear wing of a Formula one car is given with respect to an orthonormal basis { e 1, e 2, e 3 } by ε 11 3.0 ε 22 1.0 ε = ε 33 γ 12 = 2.2 2.4 10 4 γ 13 0 γ 23 2.2 Determine the corresponding stresses for the following materials (isotropic linear elasticity can be assumed unless otherwise indicated): a. steel: E = 2.1 10 5 MPa, ν = 0.30 b. aluminium: E = 75GPa, ν = 0.34 Figure 5.4: Formula one car c. polycarbonate: G = 860MPa, K = 4.00GPa d. transversely isotropic glass-fibre reinforced polypropylene: E 1 = 4.2 GPa, E 3 = 4.6 GPa, ν 12 = ν 13 = 0.28 Exercise 5.2 Bearing pads used to support bridge structures (see Exercise 2.6) need to be much stiffer in compression than they are in shear. The stiffness in compression is needed to support the weight of the bridge without excessive vertical displacements, while some flexibility is needed in shear in order to accommodate horizontal displacements of the structure due to thermal expansion. Two isotropic materials are being considered for a bridge bearing (sketched in Figure 5.5): material A has a Young s modulus of E A = 1.0MPa and Poisson s ratio of ν A = 0.49, while for material B E B = 10MPa and ν B = 0.30. a. Compute the shear modulus and bulk modulus for the two materials. b. Since the thickness of the pad is small compared to its width, normal strains in the horizontal directions can beneglected. Show that underthis assumption the apparent modulusẽ which relates the vertical normal stress to the vertical normal strain (i.e. σ 33 = Ẽε 33) is given by Ẽ = K + 4 3 G 8

Exercise 5.3 A long, thin structural support of width w = 385mm is loaded by a shear stress of τ = 15MPa, see Figure 5.6. The support is made out of a unidirectionally reinforced polymer plate with a fibre orientation of φ = 45, i.e., the fibres are aligned along the vector e 1 = 1 2 ( e x + e y ) with e x and e y horizontal and vertical base vectors respectively; the direction perpendicular to the fibres is given by the vector e 2 (see the figure). e 2 e y e 1 τ φ e x τ w Figure 5.6: Composite support Since the thickness of the plate is much smaller than the other dimensions, a plane stress state can be assumed. Furthermore, the support can freely contract in the y-direction, i.e. σ yy = 0. Theelastic behaviour of the material is orthotropic and is given with respect to the basis { e 1, e 2 } by σ 11 σ 22 σ 12 E 1 ν 21 E 1 0 1 ν 12 ν 21 1 ν 12 ν 21 = ν 12 E 2 E 2 0 1 ν 12 ν 21 1 ν 12 ν 21 0 0 G 12 ε 11 ε 22 γ 12 9
withtheadditional requirementthatν 21 E 1 = ν 12 E 2. Theelastic constants havebeendetermined as E 1 = 20GPa, E 2 = 12GPa, G 12 = 8GPa and ν 12 = 0.40. a. Show that the vectors e x and e y can be written in terms of the basis { e 1, e 2 } aligned with the fibres as e x = 1 2 ( e 1 e 2 ) e y = 1 2 ( e 1 + e 2 ) b. Determine the stress tensor in the plate in terms of the basis { e x, e y }, assuming a homogeneous stress state. c. Rewrite the stress tensor in terms of e 1 and e 2. d. Exercise 5.4 The stress in a point of the wall of a spherical pressure vessel (Figure 5.7) is given approximately by σ = pr 2t ( e 1 e 1 + e 2 e 2 ) wherethebasisvectors e 1 and e 2 aredefinedtangentially tothevesselwalland e 3 isperpendicular to it. The pressure in the vessel p and the (unloaded) vessel radius R and wall thickness t are given by p = 15 bar, R = 2.0 m and t = 20 mm. The vessel is made of a steel which can be considered isotropic and linear elastic for the given pressure; Young s modulus and Poisson s ratio of the material are E = 2.1 10 5 MPa and ν = 0.30. e 2 e 1 e 3 Figure 5.7: Spherical pressure vessel a. The measured normal strains in these directions are respectively ε nn,1 = 0.2 10 4, ε nn,2 = 1.9 10 4 and ε nn,3 = 1.6 10 4. The thickness of the plate is small compared to its in-plane dimensions, so a plane stress state can be assumed. The plate material can be considered isotropic and linear elastic with Young s modulus and Poisson s ratio given by E = 1.5 10 5 MPa and ν = 0.25. e y 45 e z e x Figure 5.8: Plate with gauge rosette configuration a.
