1 FOR DUTCH STUDENTS! ENGLISH VERSION NEXT PAGE Toets Inleiding Kansrekening 1 7 februari 2011 Voeg aan het antwoord van een opgave altijd het bewijs, de berekening of de argumentatie toe. Als je een onderdeel van een opgave niet kunt maken, ga dan toch door met de volgende onderdelen. Je mag daarbij de in eerdere onderdelen verschafte informatie gebruiken. De (grafische) rekenmachine mag gebruikt worden bij het tentamen. De rekenmachine kan gebruikt worden om numerieke berekeningen uit te voeren. De rekenmachine kan echter NIET gebruikt worden om argumenten te geven voor verkregen oplossingen. Opgave 1 Laat A en B twee onafhankelijke gebeurtenissen zijn. Laat zien dat A en B ook onafhankelijk zijn. Geef bij de afleiding duidelijk aan welke eigenschappen van de (kans)functie P je gebruikt! Opgave 2 Het ananas -woordenboek bestaat uit een alfabetische lijst van alle anagrammen van het woord ananas, d.w.z. van alle rijtjes van 6 letters die drie maal de letter a, twee maal de letter n en één maal de letter s bevat. a) Hoeveel woorden bevat het ananas -woordenboek? (Het simpelweg opschrijven van alle mogelijke woorden levert geen punten op.) b) Hoeveel woorden staan er in dit woordenboek na het woord ananas? c) Op een willekeurige manier wordt één woord uit het woordenboek geselecteerd, waarbij alle woorden een gelijke kans hebben om gekozen te worden. Bereken de kans dat dit woord op een n eindigt. Bereken deze kans nogmaals als bovendien gegeven is dat dit woord met een a begint. Zie ommezijde voor overige opgaven 1 Deze toets telt voor 20% mee in het cijfer voor het vak Inleiding Kansrekening. Puntentelling toets: opgave 1: 2 pt; opgave 2: 3 pt; opgave 3: 3 pt; opgave 4: 2 pt.

2 Opgave 3 Gegeven zijn drie vazen met witte en zwarte ballen. De eerste vaas bevat 1 witte bal en 4 zwarte ballen, de tweede vaas bevat 3 witte en 3 zwarte ballen en de derde vaas bevat 6 witte en 3 zwarte ballen. Uit elke vaas trekken we op volstrekt willekeurige wijze één bal. Laat Z het aantal zwarte geselecteerde ballen zijn. a) Bereken de kans dat er precies één zwarte bal wordt geselecteerd, d.w.z. bereken P(Z = 1). b) Bepaal de kansdichtheidsfunctie (pdf) van Z. c) Bereken de verwachting van Z. Opgave 4 Een discrete stochast X neemt alleen de waarden 1, 2, 3, 4,... aan (dus de natuurlijke getallen). Zijn kansdichtheidsfunctie (pdf) f wordt gegeven door a als x {1,2,3,4} f(x) = ( x 4 b 1 3) als x IN\{1,2,3,4} voor alle x IN, waarbij a en b twee reële constanten zijn. Bovendien is gegeven dat P(3 < X < 6) = 1 2. a) Bereken a en b. b) Bereken de kans dat X een waarde aanneemt die deelbaar is door 3, d.w.z. een waarde in de verzameling {3, 6, 9, 12,...}.

If you can t solve an item of some exercise, continue with the next items. It is allowed to use the information that you have obtained before. The graphical calculator can be used during the midterm. However, the graphical calculator can be used only for numerical calculations. It can NOT be used to provide arguments for the solutions obtained. Exercise 1 Let A and B be two independent events. Show that the events A and B are independent as well. Indicate clearly in the proof which properties of the (probability) function P you use! Exercise 2 The ananas -dictionary consists of an alphabetical list of all anagrams of the word ananas, i.e. of all strings of 6 characters containing three a -s, two n -s and one s. a) How many words does this ananas -dictionary contain? (Simply listing all possible words yields no points.) b) How many words in this dictionary come after the word ananas? c) We arbitrarily select one word from this dictionary in such a way that all words are equally likely to be used. Determine the probability that this word ends with an n. Determine this probability once again if moreover it is given that this word starts with an a. 4 Exercise 3 Consider three boxes with white and black balls. The first box contains 1 white and 4 black balls, the second box 3 white and 3 black balls and the third box 6 white and 3 black balls. From every box we select in an arbitrary way one ball and Z is the number of black balls selected. a) Determine the probability that precisely one black ball is selected, i.e. determine P(Z = 1). b) Determine the probability density function (pdf) of Z. c) Determine the expectation of Z. Exercise 4 A discrete random variable X only takes the values 1, 2, 3, 4,... (so the natural numbers). Its probability density function (pdf) f is given by a if x {1,2,3,4} f(x) = ( x 4 b 1 3) if x IN\{1,2,3,4} for every x IN, where a and b are two real constants. Moreover, it is given that P(3 < X < 6) = 1 2. a) Determine a and b. b) Determine the probability that X takes a value that is divisible by 3, i.e. a value in the set {3,6,9,12,...}.

At the first equality we used one of de Morgan s rules: (A B) = A B, at the 2nd and 7th equality we use the property that P(C ) = 1 P(C) for any event C, at the 3rd equality the property that P(A B) = P(A)+P(B) P(A B), at the 4th equality that P(A B) = P(A)P(B) and the 5th and 6th equalities are simple algebraic manipulations. Exercise 2 6! a) The total number of words is 3!2!1! = 60. b) Let us count the words coming before ananas. Definitely these are the words starting with aa or with anaa. There are 4! 1!2!1! = 12 aa words (count the number of four-character strings with one a, two n -s and one s ) and 2! 1!1! = 2 anaa -words. So = 45 words come after ananas. c) Let A be the event the word ends with an n and B the event the 5! word starts with an a. Of course, there are 3!1!1! = 20 words ending 5! 4! with an n, 2!2!1! = 30 words starting with an a and 2!1!1! = 12 words starting with an a and ending with an n.
