7 6 Ten geleide Een van de eerste taken w aarvoor het Katholiek Docum en ta tie C en tru m (KDC) b ij z ijn o p rich tin g op 1 m ei 1969 stond, w a s h et v e rza m e le n en b e w a re n v a n de periodieke p ublicaties die v o o r en d oor N ederlan dse kath olieken z ijn u itg egeven. Om d eze ta a k te ku n n en u itvo eren w a s h et n o d ig een o verz ich t te v e rk rijg e n van de betreffende periodieken. W eldra bleek de ijzeren w et van de docum entatie, dat nam elijk de docum en ten die h et m e e st z ijn v e rsp re id h et m in st z ijn b ew a a rd en dat de d ocu m en ten die h e t m in s t z ijn v e r spreid h et m eest z ijn b ew aard, a fo rtio ri op te gaan voor de periodieken. In het bijzonder dag- en w eekbladen b leken slech ts sch a ars v e rte g e n w o o rd ig d te zijn, n iet alleen in de N ijm eegse U n iversiteitsb ib lioth eek m aar ook in de m eeste andere w etenschappelijke bibliotheken. Z elfs v a n geren o m m eerd e b lad en w a re n geen com plete le g g e rs a a n w e z ig, en al even m in w a re n de b ib lio th eken geabon n eerd op alle lopende u itg aven. In v e rg e lijk in g m et de w e te n sch a p p elijke tijd sch riften, die re d e lijk n a u w g e z e t w a re n gecatalogiseerd, w a re n de n iet-w eten schappelijk e p eriodieken m eesta l u ite rst s u m m ie r on tsloten, m et dien v e rsta n d e dat g e w o o n lijk w a s v o lsta a n m et de v e r m eld in g v a n de h oofd titel en de a a n w e z ig e ja a r g a n gen. N och op o n derw erp, n och op u itg ever, noch op ondertitel kon een p erio diek w o rd e n opgespoord. Om een u itg ave te ku n n en raadplegen, diende de onderzoeker al over de nodige vóórkennis te beschikken. Relev a n te in fo rm a tie o m n a te gaan of, en zo j a w e lk e p eriodieke p ublicaties op h e t te b estu d eren gebied w a re n v ersch en en, en w a a r d eze z ic h even tu eel bevonden, w as slechts aan specialisten bekend. H et K D C h e e ft z ic h v a n m eet a f aan to egelegd zo w e l op het opsporen, verzam elen en bew aren van periodieke p ublicaties als op de system atisch e o n tslu itin g v a n d eze b u iten g ew o o n w a a rd e v o lle docu m en tsoort. M eer dan de m eeste andere docum enten kunnen periodieken de o n derzoeker o ver kortere o f la n g e re afstan d la n g s w e g e n en p aden v a n h isto risc h e o n tw ik k elin g en leiden. Juist d oor h u n periodieke v e rs c h ijn in g bieden zij bij u itste k seriële in fo rm a tie o ver een v e elh eid v a n th em ag eb ied en en de daarbij b eh o ren d e sociaal-culturele netw erken. H et g a a t h ie r o m een v a ria tie die alle terrein en v a n h e t k a th o liek leven in N ederlan d om vat: n iet en k el de specifiek go d sd ien stig e p eriodieken, m aar ook dag- en w eekbladen, naast bladen van vak-, stands-, v ro u w e n - en je u g d o rg a n isa tie s, a lsm ed e alm an ak ken, jaarboeken en jaarlijks verschijnende naam lijsten. M ediojaren zeventig vatte de toenm alige Begeleid in g sco m m issie v a n h et KDC, on der voorzittersch a p v a n p rof. dr. A.F. M a n n in g (t), h et p lan op v o o r een onderzoeksproject Bibliografie van Katholieke Nederlandse Periodieken (BKNP). V o o r opzet, w e r k w ijz e en p rob lem en v a n d it p roject kan w o rd e n v e rw e z e n n aar de n a v o lg en d e in leid in g o ver H et sam en stellen v a n de B ibliografie v a n K ath oliek e N ed erlan d se P eriodieken. D aarin w o rd t o ok een u iteen zettin g g egeven v a n de fa c toren die ertoe geleid hebben dat dit project qua plann in g sch ro m e lijk u it de h a n d gelopen is. M et n am e d e b e s liss in g o m de b ib lio grafisch e b e sch rijvin g e n te b a seren op autopsie, h eeft g ezo rg d v o o r een sch ier on b eh eersb are sp a n n in g tu sse n de eisen v a n en e rzijd s een w e te n sch a p p e lijk vera n tw o o rd product en anderzijds een uitvoering die in overeens te m m in g w a s m e t de fin anciële en lo g istieke m og e lijkheden, in het bijzonder m et de beschikbare m enskracht en expertise. Na explorerend onderzoek in tientallen b ro n n en z ijn m eer d an 5800 titels in b eh a n d e lin g gen o m en en v e rvo lg e n s is een veelv o u d aan ja a r g a n g e n o o k letterlijk ter h a n d gen o m en o m te beoordelen o f z e v o o r o p n em in g in de bib lio grafie in a a n m erk in g k w am en, en zo j a om d eze g ro n d ig te b e sch o u w e n, te on derzoeken en te b esch rijven. U itein d elijk z u l len ru im 3900 titels w o rd e n opgen o m en in de v i j f delen v a n de bib liografie. De u itvo e rig e b esch rijvin g en, sam engesteld op basis van autopsie en m ede gebaseerd op bestudering van de relevante literatuur, zu l len in v i j f d elen w o rd e n gepubliceerd: 1. Dag- en w e e k b lad p ers, 2. C u ltu u r en o n tsp a n n in g, 3. G odsdienstig en kerkelijk leven, 4. Opvoeding en onderw ijs, 5. Politie k en sociale actie. W e z ijn v e rh e u g d dat h e t K D C n a ja re n v a n gro n d ige voo rb ereid in g in de geleg en h eid is h et eerste deel v a n de BKNP te presenteren. H ierin zijn 314 titels van dagen w eek b la d en b esch reven en an d ere p eriodieken die m et d e pers in en gere z in te m a k en hebben. H et b etreft derhalve een deel dat een bijzondere collectie vertegenw oordigt binnen het geheel van de katholieke Nederlandse periodieken. De opkom st, groei, bloei en onderg a n g v a n de ka th olieke dag-, n ie u w s- en w eek b la d en is een afspiegelingvan de ontw ikkeling die het Nederla n d s ka th o licism e in de n egen tien d e en de tw in tig ste e eu w h e e ft doorgem aakt, zo m en w il v a n de p rocessen v a n v e r z u ilin g en o n tzu ilin g. De dag- en w eek b la d p ers is in m eer d an één o p zich t te b e sc h o u w e n als de e x p ressie van h et katholieke zelfverstaan en van de veranderin g e n die d eze id en titeit in de loop v a n de la atste tw ee eeuw en heeft ondergaan. In order to be able to carry out that task, it w as essential to acq u ire a su rvey o f th e p eriodicals in q u estion. V ery soon it turned out that the iron rule o f docum entation - docum en ts circu lated on a w id e scale are h ard ly p reserved a t all, w h e re a s th o se circu lated on a m oderate scale are p reserved b e s t - ap plied a fo rtio ri to p eriodicals. Only a lim ited n u m b er w a s fo u n d, esp ecia lly o f th e daily and w e e k ly p apers, n ot only in th e U n iversity Library o f N ijm egen b u t in m o st oth er sch o la rly lib raries. T h ere w e r e no com plete files, n o t even o f w ell-esta b lish ed n ew sp a p ers, n o r did lib raries h a v e su b scrip tio n s to all current issues. V ery often the collections did not inclu d e an y re g io n a l or local p ap ers at all; a fe w stray is s u e s at th e m ost. A p a rt fro m in com p lete collections, th e in adeq u ate p reservatio n o f th e p eriodicals also m a n ifested it s e lf in th e w a y in w h ic h th ese docu m en ts h ad b een catalogu ed. C om pared to sch o la rly p eriodicals, w h ic h h ad b een catalogu ed rea so n a b ly accurately, access to the non-scholarly periodicals w as m ostly lim ited, generally it w a s confined to records o f th e m a in title a n d th e v o lu m e s p resent. It w a s im p o ssib le to locate a periodica l b y subject, ed itor or subtitle. T h e resea rch er h ad to h a v e q u ite a g rea t d eal o f k n o w led g e o f th e subject alread y in ord er to b e ab le to re fe r to a p ublication. Relev a n t in fo rm ation ab ou t w h ic h p eriodicals, i f any, h ad appeared on th e subject, an d w h e r e they w e r e to be fo u n d, w a s only k n o w n to specialists. F rom th e v e ry b e g in n in g th e K D C a p p lied it s e lf to locating, co llectin g an d p re se rvin g p eriodicals, as w e ll as to im p ro v in g th e system atic access to th is extrem ely v a lu a b le type o f docum ent. To a grea ter exten t than m ost other docum ents, periodicals can lead the researcher, fo r a sh o rt or lo n g p eriod o f tim e, a lo n g th e p ath s o f h isto ric a l d evelopm en ts. It is p recisely b ecau se they w ere published periodically that they offer serial inform ation on a la rg e n u m b er o f su b ject areas an d the accom panying socio-cultural system s. W e are concern ed h ere w ith a ra n g e em b ra cin g a ll areas o f C atholic life in the Netherlands: not only the specifically religio u s p eriodicals, b u t also daily an d w e e k ly p ap ers, p asto ra l p u blications, trade jo u rn a ls, jo u rn a ls o f w o m e n s o rg a n isa tio n s an d y o u th org a n isa tio n s, as w e ll as alm an acs, yearb ooks an d a n n u a l lists o f n am es. By th e m id d le o f th e 1970s th e G o vern in g Board o f th e K D C a t th e tim e, u n d er th e ch a irm a n sh ip o f th e late Prof. D r A. F. M a n n in g, conceived th e p lan to sta rt the research project Bibliografie van Katholieke Nederland- se Periodieken (Bibliography o f Catholic Dutch Periodicals) (BKNP). T h e a im an d m eth od o f th is p roject and th e p rob lem s th a t h ad to b e solved, w i ll b e d iscu sse d in th e fo llo w in g in trod u ction on T h e com pilation o f the Bibliography o f Catholic Dutch Periodicals. The introduction also touches u p o n th e facto rs th a t led to the p roject n o t d evelo p in g accord in g to p lan at all. It w a s esp ecially th e decision to u s e autopsy as th e b a sis fo r th e descrip tion s th a t ca u sed b a rely controllab le ten sion b etw een th e requirem en ts o f a sch o la rly so u n d product on th e one h a n d an d a fin al p rod u ct co n sisten t w ith the fin ancial an d lo g istic p ossib ilities, in p articu lar w ith th e m a n p o w er an d expertise availab le, on th e other. A fte r th e exploration an d exam in atio n o f d o zen s o f sources, m ore th a n 5,800 titles w e r e con sid ered and su b seq u en tly a la rg e n u m b er o f v o lu m e s w a s - litera l ly - taken in h a n d in order to a ssess w h e th e r they q u alified fo r in clu sio n in th e b ib lio grap h y, an d i f they w ere, to e x am in e an d describe them. F in ally m ore than 3,900 titles w i ll b e in clu d ed in th e 5 v o lu m e s o f the b ib lio grap h y. T h e detailed descrip tion s, b a sed on autopsy an d on th e stu d y o f relevant literature, w ill be p u b lish ed in th e fo llo w in g v o lu m es: 1. D aily an d w e e k ly p ress; 2. C u ltu re an d entertainm ent; 3. R eligious and ecclesiastical life; 4. In stru ction an d education; 5. Politics an d social action. T h e K D C is p leased to b e ab le to present, a fter yea rs o f th o ro u g h p reparation, th e first v o lu m e o f th e BKNP. T h is v o lu m e co m prises th e decriptions o f 314 titles o f daily and w eekly papers and other periodicals connected to th e p ress in a m ore restricted sense. It is th erefore a volum e that represents a special collection w ith in th e w h o le o f th e C ath olic D utch p eriodicals. T h e origin, rise, flo u rish in g an d decline o f th e C ath olic daily an d w e e k ly p apers reflect th e d evelopm en t o f D utch C a th olicism in th e 19 th an d 20 th centu ries, even th e process o f co n fessio n a l segregatio n an d its g ra d u al d isap pearan ce. In m ore th a n one resp ect th e daily and w e e k ly p ress can b e consid ered to ex p ress th e Catholic identity an d th e ch a n g es th is iden tity u n d e rw e n t in the co u rse o f th e p a st tw o centuries. Both th ro u gh their existence and th ro u gh th eir contents th e daily p apers in p articu lar give expressio n to th e place o f th e C atholics in D utch society. T h e earliest in itiatives go b a ck to th e first h a lf o f th e 19 th century, an d w e r e m a in ly taken b y Le Sage ten B roek and, later, by A lb e rd in g k T h ijm. In a fo llo w in g p h a se th e pion e e rin g w o r k o f th ese tw o la ym en w a s contin u ed and g ra d u ally taken o ver by th e clergy. In th e la s t decades o f th e 19th century tw o factors w e r e o fv ita l im portan ce to th e d evelopm en t o f th e C ath olic p ress; th e first, a fa c tor o f great external im portance, w as the discontinuation o f th e special sta m p fo r n ew sp a p ers in 1869; the second w as an internal factor: Catholics, too, started to

De ka th olieke dag- en n ieu w sb la d en in N ederlan d tot 1940 v o o r de b u n d e l D e gezegende pers: aspecten van de katholieke persgeschiedenis in Nederland tijdens de 19e en 20e eeuw (Z eist 1989) g e w e ze n op de p arad oxale ten d en zen v a n co n fe ssio n a lise rin g en co m m ercia liserin g die z ic h g elijk tijd ig voordeden. O m dat k a th o liek e o n dern em ers b rood z a g e n in h et bed ien en v a n h e t eigen v o lk sd e e l m et een eigen pers, g in g e n steeds m eer u itg e v e rs o ver tot h et publiceren v a n ka th olieke n ie u w s- en dagbladen; deels vo o rza g e n zij in deze behoefte door het oprichten van nieuw e bladen, deels door de o m v o rm in g v a n b esta an d e blad en in katholieke geest. Dit laatste beantwoordde aan de eisen en verw ach tin g en v a n de kerk elijk e h iëra rch ie in N ederland, die la n g e tijd a rg w a n e n d en a fw ijze n d h a d gerea geerd op de groeien de leesw o ed e v a n d e gelovigen. Om d eze b eh o efte in goede b a n en te leiden g in g de cleru s zich steeds n ad ru k k elijk er m et de p ers b em oeien, z o w e l in controlerende als stim ulerende zin. Dat de hoofdredactie v a n d e grote ka th olieke kra n ten ged u ren d e v e le decen n ia in h an d en v a n p riesters w a s, kan a ls een d u i d elijk e in dicatie v a n de c o n fe ssio n a lise rin g v a n de katholieke pers w orden gezien. De expan siem o g elijk h ed en w a re n echter beperkt; b in n en de v e rzu ild e kaders reik ten z e n a m e lijk n iet verder dan de katholieke doelgroep. In de periode tu s sen de beide w ereld o o rlo g en k w a m e n de g re n ze n v a n de groei steeds d u id elijk er aa n h et licht, h etgeen leidde tot een nieuw probleem : de katholieke uitgevers w erden elk aars concurren ten. De b e la n g e n strijd liep u it op d iverse conflicten die slech ts m et p ijn en m oeite door de kerk elijk e overh ed en kon den w o rd e n beslech t. In d iezelfd e tijd w e r d de p rofessio n ele en id eo lo gisch e vorm in g van de katholiekejournalisten en uitgevers bevord erd d oor de o p rich tin g v a n b ero ep so rgan isaties. De o o rlo gstijd beteken d e een n ie u w e v u u rp ro e f. De ka th olieken leverd en h u n eigen b ijd ra g e n aan h et genre van ondergrondse bladen. N a de T w eed e W ereld o o rlo g keerden de kath olieke periodieken in volle om vang terug op de levensbesch o u w e lijk e m ed iam arkt. H oew el de dag- en w e e k blad pers z ic h n a d e b e v rijd in g w e e r als de verd ed ig ster v a n de k a th o liek e z u il profileerde, veran d erd e z ij toch v a n karak ter. In de loop v a n d e ja r e n v ijftig v erk regen de ka th olieke b lad en een grotere ze lfsta n d ig h e id ten o p zich te v a n h et k e rk e lijk g e za g, al w a s h et m aar om d a t d e cleru s n ie t la n g er de d ie n st u itm a a k te in de redactie en de p ra k tijk v a n de censo ren a lle n g s in o n b ru ik geraakte. De en e k ra n t v ro e g e r dan de andere, m a a r a ls geh eel kan m en v a n de ka th olieke p ers z e g gen d a t zij z ic h in d e ja re n z e s tig o n tw ik k eld e tot de overtuigde spreekbuis van de kerkelijke en m aatschapp elijke v e rn ie u w in g e n en als zo d a n ig grote in vlo ed h e e ft u itg eoefen d op h e t proces v a n de o m gekeerd e z u ilw e r k in g. A ls p leitb ezo rger v a n de v e rn ie u w in g w e r d z ij ech ter w e ld r a o o k m eegesle u rd door de go lven v a n de on t z u ilin g. De lo tg eva llen v a n de tw ee grote lan d elijke dagb la den - de V olkskrant en D e Tijd - d em on streren de ingrijpende veranderingen die zich sinds het m idden v a n d e ja re n z e s tig hebben v oltro kken, een zo d a n ig grote o m m ek eer d at in 1980 a l n iet m eer v a n een k a th o lieke p e rs in N ederlan d gesp roken kan w o rd en. Ook de regio n ale p ers, die een e eu w geleden w a s gecon fession aliseerd, b e w o o g z ic h in d e ja re n z e v e n tig in o m g e keerde rich tin g, m e t u itzo n d e rin g v a n en kele bladen, z o a ls de Tw entsche Courant en H et B in n en h ofd ie n og ru im tien ja a r h e t ka th olieke v a a n d e l h o og h ield en. In h e t alg em een kan echter op goede gron d en g e ze g d w o r den dat h e tja a r 1980, d at als term inus ad quem v o o r de BKNP is gekozen, ze k e r v o o r d e dag- en w eek b la d en ook als de h isto risch e ein d term v a n de katholieke p ers kan w orden beschouw d. V a n versch ille n d e zijd e n h e e ft h et KDC fin anciële o n d e rsteu n in g v e rk re g e n v o o r de re a liserin g v a n h et project. B eh alve v a n de N ederlan dse O rg an isatie voor Z u iver-w etensch ap p elijk O n derzoek (ZWO/NWO) w erd subsidie ontvangen van de Katholieke U niversiteit N ijm egen in h e t kad er v a n de O n derzoekpool. V o o ra l o o k h et S o rm an ifo n d s h eeft een su b sta n tiële b ijd ra g e geleverd o m d it sp ecim en v a n m od ern m o n n i k e n w e rk tot sta n d te b ren gen. T h e d yn am ic expan sion o f th e C ath olic p ress at the en d o f th e 19 th centu ry an d in th e first decade o f the 20 th centu ry h a d a n u m b er o f ch aracteristics w h ic h the u s e r o f th e b ib lio g ra p h y m ig h t find it u s e fu l to be a w a re of. Otto L an khorst, in h is B etw een com m erce an d ap ostolate. T h e C ath olic d ailies an d n ew sp a p ers in th e N eth erlan ds u n til 1940, p u b lish ed in The blessed press: aspects o f the history o f the C ath olic press in the N etherlands during th e 19th and 20th centuries (Zeist 1989), pointed out the paradoxical, sim ultaneous tend en cies to w a rd s co n fessio n a lisa tio n an d com m erialisation. Since an increasing num ber o f Catholic entrep ren eu rs saw m on ey in p ro v id in g th e ir o w n p a rt o f the n ation w ith a p ress o f th eir o w n, an in c re a sin g n u m b er o f p u b lish e rs started to b rin g o u t C ath olic (news)- papers; they m et the existing need partly by establishin g n e w p ap ers an d p artly by co n vertin g e x istin g periodicals in the spirit o f Catholicism. This conversion satisfied the dem ands and expectation s o f th e C h u rch H ierarchy in th e N eth erlan ds, w h o had, fo r a lo n g tim e, d istru sted an d rejected th e g ro w in g p a ssio n fo r re a d in g o f th e fa ith fu l. To steer th is need in th e r ig h t direction, th e clergy in creasin g ly in terfered in m atters o f th e p ress, b o th in a su p erviso ry an d in a stim u la tive sen se. T h e fa c t th a t fo r m an y decades th e c h ie f editors w e r e p riests m ay b e seen as a clear indication o f the confessionalisation o f the Catholic press. H ow ever, expan sion w a s only p ossib le to a certain extent; w ith in th e segregated faction s it did n ot exten d b eyon d th e C ath olic ta rg et group. In th e period b etw een th e W a rs th e lim its to expan sion b ecam e in creasin g ly clear; th is led to a n e w problem : th e C ath olic p u b lish ers b ecam e com petitors. T h e clash o f in terests ended in v a rio u s conflicts, w h ic h th e C h u rch au th orities could only reso lve w ith g rea t effort. A t th e sam e tim e th e p rofe ssio n a l an d id eological train in g o f th e C a th olicjou r- n a lists w a s p rom oted th ro u g h th e fo rm ation o f p ro fessio n a l o rg an isa tio n s. T h e w a rtim e b ro u g h t w ith it a new crucial test. The Catholics m ade their ow n contributions to the genre ofun dergroun d periodicals. A fte r th e Second W o rld W a r th e w h o le Catholic p ress w a s b a ck on th e id eological m ed ia m arket. In sp ite o f th e fa c t th a t after th e lib eration th e daily and w e e k ly p re ss once m ore took u p th e p osition o f d efen d er o f th e C ath olic faction, it n eve rth eless gra d u ally ch an ged. In th e co u rse o f th e 1950s th e C ath olic p eriodicals b ecam e m ore in d ep enden t o f th e ch u rch au th o rities, i f only b ecau se th e clergy no lo n g er la id d o w n th e la w in ed itorial m atters, an d b ecau se th e practice o f ce n so rs w a s p a s s in g into d isu se. A s a w h o le th e C atholic p ress - so m e p ap ers soon er th a n oth ers - can be said to h ave developed in th e 1960s into th e co n vin cin g m ou th p iece o f refo rm s, b o th w ith in th e ch u rch an d in society, and as such to have exerted considerable in fluence on th e p rocess o f seg regatio n in re v e rse o rd er. A s th e advocate o f th is refo rm, h o w ever, th e C ath olic p ress w a s soon carried a w a y by th e w a v e s o f desegregation. T h e u p s an d d o w n s o f th e tw o im p o rtan t n atio n al n ew sp a p ers - de V olkskrant an d D e Tijd - d em on strate th e rad ical ch a n g es th a t h ave taken place sin ce th e m id d le o f th e 1960s, ch a n ges so d ra stic th a t by 1980 one can no lo n g e r sp eak o f a C ath olic p re s s in the N eth erlan ds. T h e regio n a l p ress, too, w h ic h w a s confe ssio n a lised a centu ry ago, m oved in th e opposite direction in th e 1970s, w ith th e exception o f a fe w papers su ch as the Twentsche Courant an d H et Binnenhof, w h ic h contin u ed to u p h o ld th e C ath olic b a n n e r fo r a n o th er ten years. In general, h o w ever, th ere are so u n d reasons for saying that the year 1980, chosen as term i nus ad quem fo r th e BKNP, also m a rk s th e h isto rical final term o f th e C atholic p ress, certain ly fo r th e daily and w eekly papers. V o o r een goed b egrip v a n de h isto risch e v e ra n d e rin g e n die z ic h sin d s h et begin van de 19e eeuw hebben voorgedaan is de bestud erin g v a n tijd sch riften - j u i s t a ls tijd sd o cu m en ten - gew oonlijk onm isbaar. Juist in de ja re n rond 1970 w e r d ook op la n d elijk n iv e au de ca ta lo giserin g v a n tijd sch riften actiever aa n gepakt. In 1971 v e rsch e e n de eerste u itg a v e in tw ee d elen v a n de Centrale catalogus van periodieken en seriew erken in Nederlandse bibliotheken (CCP). A n e w b ib lio g ra p h y w o u ld also h ave to pay attention to w orks concerning ecum enism, apologetics, cu ltu re, society, in stru ction, education an d other m a tte rs.3 C o n sid erin g th e p ro fu sio n o f p u b lications in the 19 th an d 20 th century, a ch ron ological arran g e m ent w ould not be very u sefu l either. The w ise decisio n w a s m ad e n o t to sta rt su ch a b ib lio g ra p h y in its entirety: th e odds w o u ld b e th a t su ch a large-scale operation w o u ld h a v e to b e d isco n tin u ed due to practical circu m sta n ces or d u e to th e d em ora lisa tio n th a t w o u ld soon arise.4 A m o n g th e m a teria l fro m arch ives an d lib raries, w h ic h w a s delivered in bo xes an d b a g s d u rin g th e first years o f th e KDC - fo u n d ed in th ere w a s a la rg e n u m b er o f p eriodicals, w e e k ly m a g a zin e s, m a g a zin es fro m societies, an d a n n u a l rep orts. It w a s called a ca u tiou s estim ate, w h ic h tu rn ed o u t to b e a rea so n a b ly correct one. W ith regard to the d u ra tio n o f th e project, it w a s th o u g h t, optim istically, th a t it w o u ld take tw o years to locate, exam in e and describe the periodicals, and another year for the com p ilation an d ed itin g o f th e b ib lio g ra p h y.9 T h e project m an a ger, h o w ever, soon m ad e it clear th a t th e subject m atter w a s m u ch m ore com plicated th a n w a s a s sum ed. T h e fa c t th a t th e estim a ted d u ra tio n o f th ree yea rs w a s la rg e ly exceeded, w a s, a m o n g oth er th in g s, the re s u lt o f a n u m b er o f decision s th a t w e r e m ad e at the early sta g es o f th e research, th e conseq u en ces o f w h ic h could at th a t m o m en t h ard ly b e realised.10 On th e one h a n d tw o explicit choices w e r e m ade: th e d ecision a b ou t th e in fo rm ation to b e in clu d ed an d th e m eth o d to b e u sed. A p a rt fr o m th ese, tw o im p licit d ecision s w e re m ade. T h e sta rtin g p oin t w a s a b ib lio grap h y to be p u b lish ed in one v o lu m e, an d m oreover, to b e prepared, set u p an d p rin ted in th e co n ven tio n al m an n er. It w a s decided to in clu d e th e fo llo w in g referen ces in th e bib liograp h y: th e d escrip tion o f th e title, th e yea rs o f publication, th e place o f publication, th e is s u in g body, in fo rm a tio n on th e ed itorial b oard. T h e fo llo w in g elem en ts w ere added: in fo rm a tio n on th e n atu re a n d contents o f th e p eriodical (for exam ple, th e fo rm at, the n u m b er o f p ages per v o lu m e, illu stra tio n s, th e in clu sion ofbook reviews) and the location. This enum eration sh o w s th a t th e b ib lio g ra p h ic a l d escription o f books w a s still, to a la rg e extent, u se d as a m odel. T h e referen ce to fo rm a t an d n u m b er o f p ages per volu m e, an d th e in clu sio n o f illu stra tio n s and/or b o o k review s is a re m n a n t o f th e choice in fa v o u r o f a b ib lio grap h ical d escription b a sed on books. T h is choice also expla in s th e rea so n w h y no referen ces to circu lation fig u res or su b scrip tion rates h a v e b een included. W h erea s books h a v e a static character, an d are fo r th a t rea so n com paratively easy to describe, p eriodicals are d ynam ic. H ardly an y p eriodical h a s k n o w n a n o r m al, q u iet life; th e lo n g e r th e period in w h ic h it is p u b lish ed, and, especially, th e h ig h e r its freq u en cy o f publication, the m ore it appears to be affected by changes: ch a n ges o f title an d subtitle, o f p u b lish e r an d place o f publication, o f fo rm a t an d freq u en cy, o f ed itorial b oard an d m a n a gem en t, o f ch aracter an d contents. Daarbij is steeds grote oplettendheid geboden. Zo m aakte in de collectie van de Koninklijke Biblioth eek (KB) de la atste ja a r g a n g (1929) v a n h et satirisch e katholieke w eekblad D e Roskam m et zijn 25 afleveringen de in d ru k v a n v o lled ig h eid. R a ad p legin g v a n h et exem p la ar v a n h e t SHC leverd e echter een n u m m e r 26 op, w a a r in h et a fsc h eid o p e n lijk w o rd t u itgesp ro k en. De a a n d u id in g com pleet a a n w e z ig op een ca ta lo g u s kaartje o f op een te rm in a lsc h erm is een rela tiefb egrip. Veel m eer dan oorspronkelijk verond ersteld w erd, is in de p ra k tijk v a n h et o n derzo ek gebleken d at de - terechte - keu ze v o o r een bib lio grafie op basis van autopsie veel reizen betekende. Een derde factor die heeft bijgedragen aan het ruim schoots o versch rijd en v a n de geplande tijd sd u u r alvoren s de resu ltaten v a n h et o n d e rzo ek kon den w o rd en gep ubliceerd, lig t in de late b e s liss in g tot h e t opsp litsen v a n h e t w e r k in deelbibliografieën. A a n v a n k e lijk is steeds ged ach t aan een é é n m a lig e p u b licatie en u it de a rch iefstu k k en v a n h e t project v a lt n iets an d ers a f te lezen d an d at er v a n w e r d u itg e g a a n d at al h e t m ateriaa l in één b a n d z ijn n e e rsla g z o u vin d en. De BKNP voelde kennelijk geen behoefte zich als een dergelijk project te presen teren. De p rojectu itvoerd er w e r k te m et een b ru in e m u lto b a n d a ls titellijst, m et p en en potlood, m et kladb e sch rijvin g e n op dubbele fo lio vellen en definitieve beschrijvingen op gele kaarten, w aarvan veiligheidshalve fotokopieën in de kluis van de U niversiteitsbibliotheek van N ijm egen (UBN) w erden gedeponeerd. Er w e r d toen n o g v a n u itg egaan, dat op b a sis v a n deze kaarten h e t z e tw e rk d oor de d ru k k er kon w o rd e n v e r richt. A th ird facto r w h ic h contributed to th e fa c t th a t it to o k consid erab ly m ore tim e to p u b lish th e re su lts o f the research w as the decision, taken rather late, to subd ivid e th e w o r k in su b-bib liograp h ies. T h is o rig in a l id ea o f one v o lu m e, as opposed to th e aim o f five v o lu m e s p lan n ed fo r th e p ublication o f th e BKNP, once m ore illu stra tes that the scope o f the project w as grossly underestim a ted at first. I f th e decision in fa v o u r o f sub- b ib lio g rap h ies h a d been taken sooner, th is w o u ld h ave speeded up the publication o f the first part. T h e 1973 records o f th e application fo r fin ancial aid m en tio n com puter science once, to account fo r th e fa c t that there is no need for cooperation w ith the Nederlands Orgaan voor de Bevordering van de Inform atieverzorgin g (NOBIN) (Dutch Organisation for the Prom otion o f In form a tio n Services): it w a s stated th a t th is organisation m ainly occupied itself w ith pilot proje c ts in th e field o f com p u ter science. It w a s clear th a t th e BKNP did n o t feel th e need to p resen t its e lf as su ch a project.
