INTERNATIONALISATION The Antwerp Academy established a firm international reputation since the 18th century. It became a multi-cultural work and meeting space for students and teaching staff from over 40 different nationalities. The Academy works in close collaboration with more than 45 institutions in and outside Europe. Internationalisation at home is one thing. As a student you will be able to discover international experiences through Erasmus mobility, study trips and workshops abroad. 7

FOTOGRAFIE De afstudeerrichting fotografie zet je op weg om verhalen te vertellen met foto s die boeien en ontroeren. De zeggingskracht van je foto s zal versterkt worden door een intensieve praktijkstudie. Zowel opnametechniek, postproductie, druktechniek, beeldselectie als lay-out en ruimtelijke presentatie komen aan bod. We worden omringd en overspoeld door beelden. Door visuele communicatie continu in vraag te stellen, dagen we je uit om een subjectieve en kritische houding te ontwikkelen ten opzichte van de beeldcultuur en de hedendaagse kunst. Naast de basisprincipes van de fototechniek brengen we je ook de beginselen van foto -theorie, -geschiedenis en -esthetica bij. Je bouwt een brede theoretische basis op met de vakken kunstgeschiedenis, kunstactualiteit, onderzoeksmethodiek en kunstfilosofie. Deze studies vormen de voedingsbodem om zelf creatief aan de slag te gaan en om je werk binnen een ruimere context te plaatsen. Omdat zelfstandig werken cruciaal is, wordt het opleidingsprogramma gaandeweg steeds individueler. Vanaf de tweede bachelor en vooral in de derde bachelor staan je eigen projecten centraal en leer je jezelf organiseren. Er wordt verwacht dat je een concept of uitgangspunt duidelijk kan omschrijven en communiceren en daarna ook de planning en productie van omvangrijke projecten helemaal zelf leert te dragen. PHOTOGRAPHY The photographer s personality is allimportant in the curriculum of Photography. The medium of photography will be approached as a means of communication, as a (visual) language, the idea being that the student masters this visual language in order to achieve personal expression. This is translated into the curriculum partly by learning to speak the language, i.e. taking one-off shots and series of photographs at different speeds: from short, fast experiments to lengthy studies. The study programme covers the various major themes (portraiture, still life, landscape, etc.) with technique integral to the desired endresult. Man, object and space are the three cornerstones of the programme. Listening is another important aspect: in practice, what the on-going study of the visual language (in a socio-cultural context) boils down to is learning to read the image. ULLA DEVENTER 26

Alles vertrekt vanuit de atelierwerking: intensief foto s maken en interpreteren, beelden bewerken, presenteren en in omloop brengen is je hoofdtaak binnen de academie. Daarnaast bezoeken we tentoonstellingen, beeldarchieven, en instituten. Als student kom je in contact met relevante en inspirerende fotografen uit binnen, -en buitenland. Je treedt regelmatig in dialoog met kunstenaars, critici, medestudenten en docenten, zodat gangbare overtuigingen bevraagd worden en misschien gaan wankelen. Dit stelt je in staat verder te kijken dan wat de eerste indruk suggereert om zo een eigen visueel vocabularium te ontwikkelen. We vragen je om je blik te richten op drie belangrijke onderwerpen: mens, ruimte en object. Zo leer je kijken door een documentaire, imaginaire, formele en conceptuele bril. Er wordt gewerkt aan verschillende snelheden: korte en snelle experimenten worden afgewisseld met langlopende en meer diepgravende projecten. Producing images as a result of thinking and feeling (the step from the internal world to the external) is the embryo of exhibiting. The curriculum of Photography guides the process of exhibiting (revealing/presenting an inner intellectual and/or emotional world) so that that inner world becomes visible and tangible to third parties. Praktijkgerichte theoretische vakken zoals techniek en materialenkennis, edelsteenkunde, juweelgeschiedenis en 3D-tekenen maken van de opleiding een boeiende ontdekkingsreis waar nieuwsgierigheid en verbeelding voortdurend worden geprikkeld. IN SITU3 FINE ARTS VRIJE KUNSTEN : IN SITU³ In Situ³ is een multimediale opleiding die vertrekt vanuit twee invalshoeken: een specifieke situatie (een thema of opdracht) en het vrije werk en individuele projecten. Als student/kunstenaar onderzoek je de vormelijke, sociale en artistieke context en voer je zo mogelijk, d.m.v. diverse materialen en/of technieken ideeën/concepten uit. Het totaalbeeld is belangrijk. Een kunstwerk staat FINE ARTS: IN SITU³ In Situ³ is a multi-medial study program, which approaches two principles: a particular situation (a topic or an assignment) and individual projects. The students/young artists investigate the visual, social and artistic context and execute, if possible, via diverse materials and/or techniques their ideas/concepts. The overall view is important.
