23 Conclusions (1) Study migration still limited in most countries, but increasing Large proportion of study migrants return home after graduation Relatively high levels of mobility both during and after HE Strong differences between countries Differences appear to be partly driven by economics Few graduates internationally mobile at any given moment Flows between first and current job differ strongly by country This is also partly driven by economic considerations

24 Conclusions (2) Even graduates who stay in home country often affected by globalization Mobile graduates are a select group in terms of socio-economic background Important to promote mobility as opportunity (as opposed to necessity) for lower socio-economic strata Little difference between mobile and non mobile graduates in overall skill match and job satisfaction Nonetheless, required skill levels are high for mobile graduates, particularly language skills, analytical thinking, presentation skills and learning skills

25 Conclusions (3) Some evidence that mobility during HE may promote skills relevant for later mobility, but causality difficult to determine Dutch research shows that several skills becoming more important over time: Foreign language becoming more important for nonmobile(!) graduates ICT-skills becoming more important for both mobile and non-mobile graduates Same applies to planning and leadership skills Field-specific skills becoming more important for mobile graduates: EU labour market for specialists becoming more open?
