2 Speaking: Yes!! Popular Communica7on

3 Ques7on: Why do we not train speaking more o?en? Not important? Too difficult! Let s discuss both reac7ons..

4 a. Importance of speaking for: Communica7on. Learners of all ages have a tendency towards communica7on (Cameron, 2001) Language Learning. Learners need to produce language to develop their skills (Swain, 1995) Final goals.

5 Kerndoel Spreken: Leerlingen kunnen communiceren over eenvoudige onderwerpen en zij ontwikkelen daarbij een attitude waarbij ze zich durven uit te drukken in het Engels. A1: Ik kan deelnemen aan een eenvoudig gesprek, wanneer de gesprekspartner bereid is om zaken in een langzamer spreektempo te herhalen of opnieuw te formuleren en mij helpt bij het formuleren van wat ik probeer te zeggen. Ik kan eenvoudige vragen stellen en beantwoorden die een directe behoefte of zeer vertrouwde onderwerpen (zoals familie, school, hobby s, winkelen, kloktijden) betreffen. A2: Ik kan communiceren over eenvoudige en alledaagse taken die een eenvoudige en directe uitwisseling van informatie over vertrouwde onderwerpen en activiteiten betreffen (zoals over mezelf, familie, werk, verkeer, interesses, winkelen, school, plaatselijke omgeving of vakantie). Ik kan zeer korte sociale gesprekken aan, alhoewel ik gewoonlijk niet voldoende begrijp om het gesprek zelfstandig gaande te houden. Activiteiten: Leerlingen kunnen gesproken informatie geven en vragen over: Hoe iemand er uit ziet Kleding Gezin Familieleden Huis Tuin Hobby s Sport Winkelen en afrekenen Huisdieren Etenswaren Groente Fruit Kloktijden Activiteiten: Leerlingen kunnen redelijk zelfstandig communiceren over: Hoe iemand er uit ziet Kleding Zichzelf (zichzelf voorstellen) Gezin en familieleden Huis en tuin Hobby s en sporten Winkelen en afrekenen Huisdieren Etenswaren Groente en fruit Beroepen De weg vragen en uitleggen Woonomgeving: Dorp of stad Vakantie Kloktijden

6 b. Difficulty of Speaking Speaking is a final product. Work from passive to ac7ve skills. Do not expect speaking too early. Plan it at the end.

7 How can we make speaking easier for pupil and teacher? Six strategies: 1. Give input If the learner understands the language he is exposed to, then he will learn automa7cally. (Krashen, 2003). Wordfield Effec7ve sentences Teacher s English

8 2. Use Chunks Chunks are short sentences which the pupil has learnt, which he can change and use in various situa7ons. Chunks are quick means to convey basic messages in the early stages of language learning. (Selivan, 2013). Example: Can I + ww..? I like + ww + ing Do you + ww..?

9 3. Sing Singing in a foreign language can significantly improve learning how to speak it (Ludke, 2013). 4. Give realis7c tasks importance of meaning and communica7on. Learners who speak to each other become much more involved when they can exchange real informa7on (Pacson, 1989).

10 5. Give guidance, but do not correct too much. There is no evidence which shows that the correc7on of speech errors is necessary or even helpful in language acquisi7on, (Terrell, 1976). Example: For an ac7vity with ques7ons, write on the board: Do + ww

11 Do you Every day often sometimes never make your bed? wash your car? water the plants? put things in the dishwasher? cook dinner? clean the windows?

12 6. Work from passive to ac7ve skills Take a theme. Make wordfield. Recycle the language. Give them passive tasks first. Guide them. Let them speak.

15 Conclusion: 1. Speaking needs prepara7on. 2. Is also possible for your students. 3. Is important and fun! So, do it. Success!
