2 B1 Woordkennis: Spelling Bestuderen Inleiding Op B1 niveau gaan we wat meer aandacht schenken aan spelling. Je mag niet meer zoveel fouten maken als op A1 en A2 niveau. We bespreken een aantal belangrijke spellingkwesties. Ei of ie: receive en believe Veel mensen vragen zich af wanneer je in het Engels ei schrijft en wanneer je ie schrijft. Er is een heel handig hulpmiddeltje om dit te kunnen bepalen: een ezelsbruggetje dat de Engelsen zelf ook gebruiken. Onthoud het volgende rijmpje: Put i before e Except after c Or when sounded like a As in neighbour or weigh Dus: je schrijft in de regel altijd eerst de i, behalve na een c. Je schrijft de e ook voor de i als de ei samen als ee (in het Engels a) klinken. Veel mensen hebben de eerste twee regels weleens gehoord, maar de laatste twee regels zijn ook belangrijk. Let op! Deze regel helpt je om in de meeste gevallen de juiste keuze te maken, maar jammer genoeg niet altijd. Er zijn dus weer uitzonderingen. We geven je de belangrijkste uitzonderingen: Neither, either, weird, seize, leisure, foreign, height. De regel uit het rijmpje geldt ook niet voor namen. Dus: Keith, Neil en Deirdre. y => ie: copy => copies Als een woord op een medeklinker + y eindigt verandert deze y in ie als je het woord verandert en er iets achter zet zoals in copy en copies of try en tried. 1

3 s of s vast Veel mensen twijfelen wanneer ze in het Engels de s vast moeten schrijven. Dat komt doordat we in het Nederlands bij meervoud en bezitsvormen s schrijven na sommige klinkers. In het Engels is de regel eigenlijk vrij eenvoudig: Regel s vast bij meervoud 's voor bezit Voorbeeld Two cats, three houses and four potatoes. Claire's car and Peter's house. beautiful of beautifull? Weet jij welke van de twee goed is? Veel mensen doen dit fout. Als je full achter een woord zet, dan schrijf je maar één l. Dus: Beautiful, fanciful, merciful, thankful, awful etc. 2

4 B1 Woordkennis: Spelling Oefenen Exercise You are going to do an exercise for practice. Deze oefeningen staan op Put the results in your portfolio. 1 Your personal notebook It may be a good idea to keep a little journal to help you improve your spelling. Number of persons: 1 Estimated time: - 1. Buy a small notebook. 2. Whenever you come across a word which you find difficult to spell of confusing, write it in your journal. 3. Also write down the words which you misspelled when you write letters and other texts. 4. Make a list of the Dutch translations and write down the English translations without looking at the list in your journal. Keep doing this until you can spell these words without making any mistakes. 5. Keep adding words and practise writing them. 2 Scrambled words This is another exercise to help you improve your spelling. Number of persons: 2 Estimated time: 30 minutes 1. Find someone to work with. You need a little help with this exercise. 2. Hand your spelling journal to your partner and ask him/her to select 20 words and scramble each word for you. 3. Write down the correct spelling for these words. 4. Check your work. Can you spell these words now without making any mistakes? 5. Put everything in your portfolio. 3

5 3 Your work Let s take a look at your own written work. Number of persons: 1-2 Estimated time: 30 minutes 1. This assignment works best if you work with a partner. 2. Find a sample of your own written work. 3. Read your work or your partner s work carefully. Can you find any spelling mistakes? 4. Use the spelling checker on your computer to check again. 5. Ask someone else to read this text too. 6. Make a list of the words you misspelled. 7. Add these words to your journal. 8. Answer the following questions: a. How many mistakes did you find? How many words were there in your text? b. Why did you spell them incorrectly? Didn t you know how to spell them? Were they typing errors? Did you forget to check your work? 9. Put everything in you portfolio. 4 Spelling bee You should also be able to write down a word that is spelled out to you. Let s practise. Number of persons: 1 Estimated time: 7x5 minutes 1. You need access to the Internet for this assignment. 2. Go to Find \'spelling bee\' (on the right). 3. Choose the difficulty level \'easy\'. 4. Practise spelling at least 10 words a day. Do this for one week. 5. For each word, write down how many times you had to listen in order to write it down. 6. How many words were you able to spell correctly? 7. Put a list of all the words you spelled together with your errors and times you had to listen to them in your portfolio. 4
