That was when we were going to get married. In the Netherlands both partners are entitled to chose the name they will use after they get married: either they can keep their own name, or they can chose the name of the partner or both names and decide in what order they should be put. And I remember that we were going to get married and we went to the city hall to arrange it and automatically the clerk 1

2 gave me a paper to ll in about the name issue. So this is one little story. I: And what did you do? R: I did ll in the form and I don t know if I speci cally asked at the time: why doesn t he get this form? I can image that I must have said something, but not something like: He should get this or This is stupid!. Not that. I: And what choice did you make, your own name or the name of your husband? R: My own name rst and the name of my partner behind it. I: And you partner did not feel like putting your name behind his name? R: He certainly did not say that, at the time. I: And why did you chose to put his name there? What was your motivation? R: Because I thought it was a nice way to show the world that we had chosen to be together. I: And did you think it was also important that your husband would show the world that he had chosen for you? R: No, apparently not. I didn t make a point out of it at all. We did have a talk about it beforehand, knowing that this would be an option, but I can t remember how that talk went. But surely I didn t say: You should really do this!. And I also remember that I was not sad about him not doing it, so it was not so important for me. I: So no big deal. In Nederland is het inmiddels zo dat beide partners mogen kiezen welke naam ze uiteindelijk gaan aannemen: of ze hun eigen naam gaan behouden of dat ze de naam van de andere 3

En ik weet dat we gingen trouwen en we gingen voor het eerst naar het gemeentehuis om te zeggen dat we dat wilden en automatisch kreeg alleen ik een papiertje toegeschoven waarop ik mijn keuze kon aangeven of ik de naam van mijn toekomstige man wilde, of mijn eigen naam wilde houden, of die in een bepaalde volgorde moest. Dus dat is eigenlijk 1 heel kort verhaaltje. 00:01:17-3 I: En... wat heb je gedaan? 00:01:19-3 R: Ik heb dat inderdaad ingevuld en ik weet niet of ik ter plekke nog gevraagd heb: 'Krijgt hij niet ook zo'n formuliertje?'. Ik kan me wel voorstellen dat ik er iets over heb gezegd. Maar niet dat ik heb gezegd: 'nou, hij moet dat ook krijgen' of 'Dit vind ik stom'. Zo niet... 00:01:44-8 I: En welke keuze heb je gemaakt? Wat was je motivatie? 00:02:00-0 R: Omdat ik het wel een leuke manier vond om aan de buitenwereld te laten zien dat wij op dat moment voor elkaar gekozen hadden. 00:02:14-0 I: En vond je het dan belangrijk dat je man ook zou laten zien dat hij voor jou gekozen had? 00:02:16-7 R Nee, blijkbaar niet want ik heb daar toen geen punt van gemaakt en ook van tevoren. We hadden het er dus wel eens over gehad dat dat kon, maar ik weet niet meer precies hoe het is gegaan. Maar ik heb hem niet gezegd van: 'Goh, dat moet je echt doen'. En ik weet 4

5 ook dat ik er geen verdriet van heb gehad dat hij dat niet deed, dus zo belangrijk was het niet voor mij. 00:02:40-4 I: Geen grote issue dus. Als je daar nu terug naar kijkt, vind je dat eigenlijk eerlijk of oneerlijk dat alleen de vrouw zo'n papiertje toegeschoven krijgt? 00:02:49-5 R: Nou, ik vond het niet ONeerlijk maar ik vind het wel een duidelijk teken dat de wetgeving inmiddels wel is veranderd, maar dat het standaard uitgangspunt toch nog is dat de man zijn naam behoudt en de vrouw neemt eventueel Dus er is al wel een keuze, het is niet meer automatisch zo Maar de medewerker van de gemeente die heeft in haar of zijn hoofd toch nog automatisch van alleen de vrouw maakt van die keuze gebruik en die man houdt standaard zijn naam. Dus in die zin... Maar ik voelde me niet benadeeld of zo. Het verbaasde me eerder dat het zo automatisch alleen met mij ging. 00:03:48-2 I: Was je achteraf blij met de keuze die je hebt gemaakt? 00:03:53-7 R: Ja, ik vond het wel leuk. Ja, ik vond het leuk dat ik eerst mijn eigen naam had, maar ik vond het ook leuk, ja, de reden waarom ik het deed, daar stond ik ook nog steeds achter, ook achteraf. 00:04:07-5 I: In die zin was het ook wel een autonome keuze hé? Heb ik de indruk? Het was niet ingegeven door je schoonmoeder of zo, of partner, of moeder? 00:04:10-0 R: Nee, nee, totaal niet (lacht). Eerder tegen de verwachting in, denk ik. 6 R: Volgens mij houden steeds meer vrouwen hun eigen naam. Of inderdaad die combinatie van eerst eigen naam. Nou, eerst eigen naam weet ik eigenlijk niet. Volgens mij is het inderdaad wel voor vrouwen veel meer een item om inderdaad een bewuste keuze te maken. Als ze al trouwen.
