2 Jakkes! Een voorwoord schrijven Als er iets is waar ik van gruwel, is dat wel voorwoorden schrijven. En zeker voor een internationaal toernooi. Ik bedoel maar, wat is voorwoord in t Engels? Foreword? Who knows! Alhoewel, een kleine moeite om het op te zoeken Dat is eigenlijk het minste wat ik terug kan doen voor onze Engelse vrienden. Toen onze groep jongedames en jongeheren van de Berketrekkers ( en 2 mensen die we stiekem uit andere ploegen leenden) vorig jaar aankwamen op The Open International 4+4 World Championships, werden we immers zéér warm onthaald. Bleek dat deze Engelsmannen en vrouwen niet alleen een toernooi met een immens lange titel hadden, maar ook een grote portie gastvrijheid en een stevige fun factor. En nadat we ons daar in de drukkende hitte goed hebben geamuseerd en ineens ook 2 bronzen medailles binnenhaalden, ontstond het idee om de volgende editie in Merksplas te houden. Dat idee is wat verder gerijpt en daar kan u, beste lezer, nu de lekker sappige vruchten van plukken. Want op zaterdag 30 juli kan u achter de sporthal gaan kijken naar de crème-de-la-crème van de slagroomtaart die de touwtrekwereld eigenlijk is. Hmmmm, slagroomtaart Maar we dwalen af! Ik wou eigenlijk alleen maar zeggen dat ik als voorzitter zeer trots ben dat we u dit toernooi kunnen aanbieden. En by the way, voorwoord blijkt wel degelijk foreword! * moan * Writing a voorwoord If there is anything I dislike, it s writing a voorwoord. Especially for an international tournament. I mean, what is voorwoord in English? Foreword? Who knows? Hmmm, not so hard to look it up, though Actually, looking it up is the least I can do for our English friends. When the boys and girls from the Berketrekkers arrived at The Open International 4+4 World Championships, we got a very warm reception. It seemed that these Englishmen also had a great dose of hospitality, besides having a tournament with a really long name. And while we were having a lot of fun in the blistering heat, we figured maybe it wasn t such a bad idea to have the next edition in Merksplas. We gave it some more taught, and on saturday july 30 th you can look at the result, when Belgian and foreign teams clash on the sporting grounds of Merksplas. 3 Camping area and competition field. Just like at the previous edition in Barton (UK), TTV De Berketrekkers will try to keep the International Open 4+4 Championchips also this time a low budget event for participants and their supporters. The concept of this tournament is based on camping. Participation will be free! You don t have to pay an entry fee for either weight categories, and as puller, you ll have free acces to our party on Saturday. For the little price of 5.00, we can supplie you breakfast on saturday and sunday. On saturday afternoon we ve got a big BBQ and you are also invited. This for the price of Included in the BBQ: 4 big pieces of meat (to chooce from: sausage, hamburger, saté, chicken, porc,... ) and vegetables. For dinner on Friday evening we can make a reservation in the restaurant of the Sportshall.There are a lot of meals available at democratic prices (around 7.50 pp). Net als bij vorige editie in Barton under Needwood (Engeland) wil TTV De Berktrekkers het toernooi low budget houden voor supporter, maar vooral ook voor deelnemers. Deelnemers kunnen daarom gratis camperen en gratis toegang krijgen tot de fuif. Verder is er geen inschrijvingsgeld en voorzien we maaltijden aan minimum prijzen. Ook voor toeschouwers is de toegang tot het toernooi gratis en ook zij kunnen reserveren voor de BBQ.

4 Hoe meet je zeventien jaar Berketrekkers? Maandag: 13u - 19u Dinsdag tot vrijdag: 10u - 19u Zaterdag: 10u - 18u - Zondag: 10u-13u Open op alle feestdagen (uitgezonderd Kerstdag en Nieuwjaar) Aan het aantal minuten? Uren? Dagen? Het aantal kopjes koffie met melk? Het aantal juiste antwoorden? Verkeerde vragen? Of tel je een ander ding? Maar welk? k Meet alvast niet in kilogram of centimeters, Of in liter, Joule of Watt. Misschien in aantal gebroken veters? Of tel je t aantal keren zat? Of tel je al de vrienden die je maakt? De wedstrijden die je verliest? Het aantal keren dat je de grond raakt? Of hoe vaak je op iemand niest? Toch zeker niet in jaren? Dat zijn er immers maar zeventien. En zeventien kan nooit evenaren de hoeveelheid plezier die ik heb gezien! Meet je t af in cola s? Of toch maar pintjes? Tel je elke lach, iedere gekke snoet? Of het aantal touwtrekvrindjes? Denk je dat het zo moet? Misschien moet ik de jaren niet tellen, ik heb ze immers toch al opgeleefd. En moet ik maar een nieuw jaar bestellen, en zien wat dat dan geeft

5 Wedstrijdverloop Omdat zo n touwtrekwedstrijd niet voor iedereen een alledaagse gebeurtenis is, staat hieronder het wedstrijdverloop uitgelegd aan de hand van wat de wedstrijdleider roept, en de bijbehorende gekke gebaren Ploeg klaar? De mensen aan het touw schudden de handen nog eens los. De ankerman, helemaal achteraan, is stevig ingesnoerd en klemt het touw goed vast. De coach geeft een teken aan de wedstrijdleider dat z n ploeg er klaar voor is Pak op touw! Het 36 meter lange touw, dat op de rechtervoet lag, wordt in een vlotte beweging omhooggebracht en een heleboel handen grijpen het vast met de bedoeling het voorlopig eventjes niet meer los te laten. Touw strekken! Met geweld wordt de linkervoet in de grond geramd. Klei, los zand, gras, het moet er allemaal aan geloven. Uit menige keel komt een schorre kreet tevoorschijn. Trekken! Het touw komt strak te staan tussen beide ploegen. De wedstrijdleider geeft aanwijzingen tot het merkteken in het midden staat. Zijn armen steken de lucht in, klaar om naar beneden te gaan. Alle ogen zijn strak op zijn handen gericht, oren gespitst om als eerste een klein tweeletterwoordje op te vangen Nu!!! De scheids zijn armen gaan naar beneden, maar vooraleer ze daar geraken zijn de ploegen al vertrokken: stalen spieren spannen zich, ruggen buigen maar breken niet, hoofden lopen zo rood aan dat menig tomaat zich beschaamd zou verstoppen, stalen hakken onder de touwtrekbotten snijden door de grond, in de hoop om hun voeten en bijbehorende eigenaars achteruit te duwen En die vingertjes die de ploegen krijgen, duiden op het aantal waarschuwingen. Een waarschuwing telt voor héél het team, ook al is het een individuele fout. Fouten waarvoor je een waarschuwing kan krijgen zijn: een onreglementaire houding, het touw voortijdig loslaten, vloeken, spugen, (te lang) zitten, het touw herpakken, langdurige inactiviteit, enzovoorts Bij de derde waarschuwing wordt de wedstrijd afgefloten en gaat het punt naar de tegenstander.

De beste kans maak je bij onze wedstrijdverantwoordelijke, Jan Lenaerts. Heeft u praktische vragen of bemerkingen, vraag dan achter onze logistiek verantwoordelijke, Jill Van Mirlo (ook wel bekend als Uw Steun In Donkere Dagen). Zij probeert u in de mate van het mogelijke te helpen of indien nodig, door te verwijzen. Graag hadden wij zowel de bezoekers als de deelnemers gevraagd om een beetje respect te hebben voor milieu en infrastructuur. We hebben een proper degelijk terrein ter beschikking gekregen van de gemeente Merksplas, en zouden dat graag ook in die toestand teruggeven. Hetzelfde geldt voor de douches, gelieve deze te gebruiken zoals het een goede burger betaamt. Dit houdt ook in dat gevraagd wordt om touwtrekboots buiten te laten staan. In case you have a practical question or remark, please ask for our head of logistics, Jill Van Mirlo, she ll try to help you as quick as possible. Please try to keep the tournament field clean and free of litter. We re also very happy we can use the showers of the sports hall, so try to keep them in good order. And most importantly, have fun! 7 The host-club of the Open World Championships 4+4 in 2004 and at the same time the winner of the 660kg class on that tournament, Holland Tug of War Club, will also join the championships of this year. This team from England will this year be part of the championships 2005 with at least 2 teams (maybe 4), one in each class. These pullers with their gold and green shirts are doing well in their own competition, so be prepared when they leave Bartun-under- Needwood behind to come to Belgium. With TTV Schutshof there is another topteam in the mixed teams competition that entered the championships of this year. This team in blue shirts and shorts is located in Hancate in the Netherlands. A few members of Schutshof are pulling in the Dutch national selection and a lot of times they exchange pullers with other teams with good results. TTV Schutshof is in the National Championships in the Netherlands one of the favorites for titles in some classes. In 2006 this team will be 25 years young and for that they probably will organise the 2006-version of the International Open 4+4. After a few international teams, it is time for a top-team from Belgium itself. Also Fam. Janssens will be competing in both classes. Fam. Janssens who are internationally very active, won last year on the Open TWIF WC twice silver with their ladies. On our tournament the team with the black shirts will combine the strong ladies with their men who are also competing in the European subtop. Black and orange shirts, but pure Belgian, is TTV De Berketrekkers. This team is also very active in the international tournaments with results like last year on the Open Championships 4+4 in England where they won the bronze medal twice. This year it is our turn to organise the Open Championships 4+4. At the moment, as well the juniors as the men, are leading the competition in Belgium and south Holland. It s typical for De Berketrekkers that there are ladies in the men-team, so they are used to pull in mixed teams. TTV De Berketrekkers is proud to welcome you in Merksplas, home of the Berkes. The team that was superior to the Berketrekkers on the Open Championships 4+4 in 2004 and went home with two silver medals. The year before in Canada they won the bronze medal, so maybe this year it will be gold? We re talking about Tripple F from England. The team with green shirts and black shorts will also be competing in both classes. Another team with a reputation in the world of tug of war, is TTV Jagersrust from the Netherlands. They are just like Fam. Janssens and Berketrekkers in the same competition, which isn t very extraordinary but if you look at there results on international tournaments, then you get to appreciate their full potential. They are one of the only teams who are allready many years in the worldtop, as well with their menteams as well with their ladies. The yellow-black coloured men and ladies will be competing in the 600 and the 660kg class. Maybe not so well known, but also a team to look out for: Twyford Tug of War Club. This team with blue/black shirts is active in the strong North League of the Tug of War Federation of Great Britain. The team from Twyford itself is a mixteam. They have a lot of men but also a lot of ladies in their club. Ideal to built up a good mixteam. They also will compete in both classes. Another team for the 660kg class on our tournament is TTV Versieck.This team from the west of Belgium is pulling in blue-red shirts. They self think that they will bring up the rear, but we re sure that they will do very well. Something good to know about Versieck is that the team is only 2 years young en doing pretty well on tournaments and their competition. Be aware of the power of these big boys and girls. At the moment of printing this, the entry of TTV De Galliërs isn t final yet. This team from Ravels is one of the oldest teams in Belgium, second to De Berketrekkers. They ve got a solid reputation in Belgium and are a player in the European sub top in the men s category. They ll coöperate with other teams for the 4+4 this year. Another team that will participate, doesn t know yet which name they ll use. The team comprises members of various international top teams. Eibergen, Vechtlust, Bloemenlust,... All solid names that hold various European and World titles. Remarkable for this team is that it consists of 4 couples, of which husband and wife each are very active in the Tug of War world, sometimes each in different clubs.

9 Rules and course of the game: Globally the game goes according to the rules of the Tug or War International Federation. There are however some deviations. Teams are made up by 4 men and 4 women. This also means that a substitute must be of the same gender as the person he or she replaces. Contrary to point 33 (TWIF rules) the teams are not classified according to their previous results, instead they are classified with the Rist-System. This is an automatic, computerized draw supervised by the head of tournament, assisted by the head judge. Automatically the teams of the same country and the teams of the same Club are spread out over the different groups. Since the International Open 4+4 Championships state that they are open to each team from each country, regardless which association or federation, we would like to repeat the rules by which this edition will comply. Stated below are the TWIF rules, which may differ with regional rules. 6 Teams and Substitutions. 6.2 Conditions for using a substitute The substitute may replace any one puller for the duration of the competition. After the substitution has taken place, no other such changes may occur. Substitution may be used for tactical reasons or due to injury. Substitution may only take place after the team has weighed-in, and has finished the first end of the first match it pulls in. The replaced puller shall not participate in any subsequent matches of that weight-class. The substitute must be a registered puller of the specific Club or Country for which he/she acts as a substitute. 6.3 Substitution procedures. Both, the puller to be replaced and the substitute, must report in full pulling outfit, (shirts, shorts, stockings and footwear) to the Chief Judge, who may designate an official to deal with the substitutes. A small (bathroom type) scale must be available at the pulling area, (in a suitable place, on solid surface), to determine the weight difference between the two pullers. The substitute puller must be of equal weight or less than the puller he/she replaces. The total weight of the team cannot be increased by the weight of the substitute, even if the team originally weighed less than the maximum weight for that weightclass. Directly after the change, the Chief Judge or designated official shall cancel the stamp or marking of the replaced puller, and indicate a similar marking on the substitute, with an continuation of TWIF rules on page 18

10 continuation of page 16 (TWIF rules) indelible marker. The Chief Judge or the designated official shall note the substitution on the appropriate weight certificate, by adding and deleting the accreditation numbers of the pullers involved with the changes. 20 SCORE 20.1 Point s Competition A team winning a match by two (2) pulls to nil will score three (3) points, the loosing team will score no (0) points. Teams wining one pull each; each team will score one (1) point Pull-off s, Semi Finals and Finals Matches will be won by two (2) pulls out of three (3). A team winning a match by two (2) pulls to nil (0) will score three (3) points, the loosing team scoring no (0) points. A team winning a match by two (2) pulls to one (1) will score two (2) points, the loosing team scoring one (1) point. 32 Competition with one group When less than 12 teams have entered in a weightclass, all teams will compete in one qualifying point s competition. The top four teams of the qualifying point s competition will enter into the semi-finals. The opponent of teams number 3 and 4 from the qualifying round will be decided by a toss of a coin. The winner of the toss will compete against number 2 of the qualifying point s competition. The loser of the toss will compete against the team placed as number 1 of the qualifying competition. 33 Competition with more than one group When 12 or more teams have entered in a weightclass, the qualifying point s competition will be divided into two groups. 8><...><8 The teams ranking first and second place after the qualifying point s competition will enter into the semi-finals. The teams ranking first in their group will compete against the teams ranking second from the other group. In case, after the qualifying competition, the first two teams in a particular group are equal on points, lots will be drawn for placement of the teams in the semi-finals. 34 Determination of ranking in qualifying competition In the event that, after the qualifying competition, teams are in contention to enter into the semi-finals the following rules will apply to determine which team(s) will qualify for the semifinals These continuation of TWIF rules on page 20

11 continuation of page 18 (TWIF rules) rules will also apply to rank teams with equal points in qualifying competition (1) Result of matches The team(s) with the best results in the matches between the teams concerned during the qualifying rounds will be first to qualify for participation in the semi-finals. (2) Matches won In the case of the results between the teams does not break the tie the team with the most matches won will go to the semi-finals. (3) Cautions In case the first 2 options do not break the tie, the team(s) with the least cautions in the qualifying rounds will be first to qualify for participation in the semi-finals. (The number of cautions of a team in a match is the total number of cautions accumulated in the pulls of that match. A team being disqualified in the qualifying rounds will be considered to have accumulated 3 cautions during that pull. In the event of a No-Pull, the cautions given prior to declaring a No-Pull will be accumulated to the total number of cautions of the team in that match. In the case of a No-Pull being declared due to infringements as indicated in rule 21. a. both teams will accumulate 3 cautions.) (4) Team weight In case the first 3 options do not break the tie, the lightest team(s) will be first to qualify for participation in the semi-final. For this criteria the certified weight on the weighing sheet will be used. (5) Toss or draw In case all of the above criteria have not broken the tie, the qualification for participation in the semi-finals will be decided by a coin toss or a draw. That leaves us with some rules which everybody knows, but we d like to ask you to keep them in mind. That will benefit this event, the teams and the judges. 12 Even hoe het niet moet Hoe kan ik me als recreant het meeste pijn doen? Ik draai het touw 10 keer rond mn armen, Of wikkel het stevig rond mn nek, leg er een knoop in ter hoogte van mn darmen, en steek het uiteinde in mn bek. Als ik val, zet in mijn vingers gespreid op de grond, en denk niet aan mn achterbuur zn hak, mn vuist zetten is te gezond, want dan liggen mijn vingers niet in de prak. Ik luister niet naar wat zo n wedstrijdofficial zegt, wat kent die er nu van? Zelf weet ik het immers toch beter! Echt! Want ik heb genoeg wijsheid in mn kruik, en wijn in de man Ik gooi al mn rommel en afval op de grond, wat gaan ze er aan doen? Wie mept mij immers op mn mond? Toch niet die sterke touwtrekkappoen?
