However, most of these theories have no scientifically background, even though attention plays a crucial role in learning or performing movements, especially under pressure. Baseball player Evan Longorian shows that even
during an interview it is essential to stay focused. For that reason, I d like to pay some attention to a study by sport scientists Lidor, Ziv & Tenenbaum (2013). Their study was focusing on how you should direct your attention during an aiming task: should you focus on movements (internally) or at the spot you are aiming at (externally). The results from this research are for example applicable to free throws, a service or putting in golf. I ve summed up the most important practical applications of this study: 1. Firstly, I ve concluded something remarkable from the methodology of the study. The participants were divided into three groups: in the first group, the participants were told to focus on their movements (internally), the second group had to focus on the aiming point (externally) and the third group got no instructions at all on what to focus on. The manipulation check showed that the latter group really didn t aim their attention consciously. Especially when the circumstances were distracting, they were not focusing on the task at hand. So, be sure to give yourself instructions on how to focus during an aiming task, or ask your coach to give instructions. 2. The research showed that performance was better, when the participants were directing their attention externally. So, when they were aware of the aiming point. In addition, they improved on the task faster with an external attention strategy. So if you are aiming, don t pay attention to the execution of your movements, but focus on the aiming point. 3. Previous research had already confirmed that external attention is beneficial to internal attention in aiming tasks. However, this study also studied the effect of both strategies in circumstances that were distracting. During the task, light flashes and hard noise were used to distract the participants. The results showed that in these circumstances both external and internal attention lead to better performance in the aiming task compared to using no attention strategy at all. During sport training and competition, distractions are common. You can therefore improve your performance in aiming tasks by consciously paying attention to your execution or the aiming points. 4. When the participants still had to learn the aiming task, the external attention strategy was better when the conditions were distracting, but only when the distraction was visual (light flashes). So if you re distracted during training by something you see, it helps to focus on just the spot you re aiming at. TipTop Sport applies a lot of knowledge from scientifically research on attentional processes in its mental training programs. Although the process is complicated, the role of attention could be crucial for athletes, especially when it comes down to it. There will also be a theme-evening organized about attention for coaches in the spring of 2014. Coaches will get tools to implement attention
strategies in their training program. Please contact me if you want to know more about the mental training program for athletes or about the theme evening for coaches.
