Greenpeace Tracks Plutonium Ships in Channel Greenpeace protesters plan to track two ships carrying weapons-grade plutonium when they pass England s south coast. The campaign group estimates that the British-registered vessels which it says are carrying 140kg of plutonium, enough to make 40 nuclear bombs will arrive off Cornwall this evening. Greenpeace s own ship, MV Esperanza, which is waiting in the English Channel, will be joined by a flotilla of anti-nuclear protesters as the cargo approaches northern France. British Nuclear Fuels (BNFL), the main shareholder in shipping company PNTL, said it could not confirm the timing or route of the shipment from the US. The two ships, Pacific Pintail and Pacific Teal, left Charleston, South Carolina, on September 20. Their cargo is bound for a nuclear processing plant at Cadarache in southern France. The vessels are predicted to pass the coastline of Cornwall, Devon and Dorset from today onwards before arriving at the French port of Cherbourg overnight tomorrow. Shaun Burnie, nuclear co-ordinator for Greenpeace International, said the shipment did not need to happen. He added: This is bomb material that cannot be, and should not be, treated as if you re just handling bananas or something. The plutonium PSi-Daily Shipping News Page 2 10/1/2004

would be converted into experimental nuclear reactor fuel before being shipped back to the US next year, he added. A BNFL spokesman said PNTL had carried over 170 shipments for a total of about five million miles without any incidents. He added: PNTL have got a huge experience of carrying all sorts of nuclear materials over the last 30 years. These things don t just happen on a whim. They are carried out under very strict regulatory authorisations. He said he could not comment on security arrangements, but it has been reported that the ships have double hulls and are each guarded by 13 commandos and armed with a 30mm cannon. The disappearance of the Jimoh came to light during a Nigerian House of Representatives investigation into the disappearance of the oil bunkering vessel African Pride. The Jimoh was one of 23 vessels arrested by the navy for alleged smuggling of bunker oil. The chairman of the House of Representatives committee investigating the affair indicated that no stones would remain unturned in the search for the two vessels. The committee has summoned the Nigerian defence minister Dr Rabiu Kwankwaso, Chief of Naval operations Admiral AO Agbitti and the current and the immediate former flag officers of the Western Naval Command, Adms Samuel Kolawole and Antonio Bob-Manuel, to appear before it next week as part of the investigation. The Nigerian president is fully backing the committee and has offered all the support it needs, the report says. Four killed on containership THE South Korean master and three officers of the containership YM People were killed in an accident about 400n-miles off Sri Lanka on 27 September. The casualties are reported to have occurred as a result of an explosion and/or leak of carbon dioxide in the engine room during repair work. The chief engineer, chief officer, and third engineer were the other casualties. One was a South Korean, the other two were Filipinos. The 22,052dwt Hong Kong-flagged vessel is now anchored off the port of Colombo awaiting a survey of the damage. Reports suggest that there is minimal damage to the 2003- built vessel. The YM People was en route to Dubai from Singapore when the accident occurred. The vessel is owned by Doun Kisen of Japan, managed by Toei Japan and operated by Yang Ming Marine. Rotterdam was rolling at 20 THE Rotterdam was rolling to 20 but was never in any danger of sinking during its mid-atlantic power loss on 24 September, according to Holland America Line. A HAL spokesman has revealed new details of the incident, which spanned a 2 hr 43 minute period beginning at 1811. While sailing in heavy North Atlantic seas, 260n-miles from the centre of Hurricane Karl, engineers discovered an accumulation of sediment in the engine lubricating oil filters that was unprecedented. Left The Barber shop and below the engine room workshop The sediment build-up disabled the ship's engines, and the lack of forward motion rendered the ship's stabilisers ineffective - after which "an extremely unpleasant and scary" rolling ensued. The ship is designed to survive a 48-degree roll, the spokesman said, and the captain estimated that the vessel did not roll more than 20 degrees. Engineers eventually brought power back PSi-Daily Shipping News Page 4 10/1/2004

online by rigging a filtration system to counter the sediment build-up. A total of 90 passengers sought medical attention, with the most serious injuries being a broken collarbone and a broken hip. An investigation has begun, including inquiries to the supplier of the ship's fuel. CASUALTY REPORTING Royal Navy minesweeper hits ferry A FERRY which runs between Gravesend and Tilbury was badly damaged when it was struck a Royal Navy minesweeper. The service had to be suspended. The un-manned Duchess M ferry was moored at Gravesend when it was hit by the HMS Grimsby at around 2.30am. The starboard side was extensively damaged. It is thought that a man was overboard when the incident happened and Gravesend's lifeboat station was called into action. But it was eventually established that no one was hurt. Mike Horrocks, engineer for the Lower Thames and Medway Passenger Boat Company who run the ferry, said: "The captain came down this morning and found the boat. We got in touch with the Port Authority and found out that the Grimsby had reported it to them. "Evidently, it got quite hectic because they had a man overside and called a mayday and the lifeboat got involved." The 63 passenger capacity boat that sails between Kent and Essex around 54 times a day is out of use for the rest of the day.the Duchess M suffered obvious damage to its framework and windows along the side were smashed. The MCA Marine and Coastguard Agency are carrying out a survey to further assess the situation. Mr Horrocks said: "Once it is surveyed, if they give us the ok, we can probably turn the repairs round pretty quickly. If they are unhappy, however, it may take a little longer." He added that it was an inconvenience for the ferry company and for the people who use it on a regular basis as they would have to spend time on the road for a trip that usually takes five minutes on the ferry. HMS Grimsby is a Sanddown class single role mine hunter thought to have been mapping the riverbed. 800 safe as ferry strikes rock THE Philippines passenger/cargo vessel Superferry 2 was diverted to Cebu on 14 September after the ferry hit an underwater object while on its regular route. A report from the Philippine Coast Guard said no injuries occurred among the 807 passengers of the ferry. The Superferry 2 was passing Bogo Island en route to Tagbilaran from Manila when the ship is thought to have collided with an uncharted reef or rock. Following the impact, the ship made an emergency diversion and sailed at slow speed to Cebu, the nearest port. Aboitiz Transport Systems Corp, the owner of the ferry, said passengers were transferred to vessels of other Aboitiz ships Super Cat and Cebu Ferries, and to their respective destination ports of Tagbilaran, Dumaguete and Ozamiz. Company sources say Superferry 2 s hull is intact and the vessel will undergo an earlier than scheduled dry-docking. PSi-Daily Shipping News Page 5 10/1/2004

SHIPYARD NEWS AUSTAL SECURES NEW VEHICLE FERRY ORDER Austal is pleased to announce a contract for a 67 metre high speed vehicle-passenger catamaran for Virtu Ferries of Malta adding to an already healthy order book for the West Australian shipbuilder. The new vessel is scheduled for delivery to Virtu Ferries in time for the European 2005 summer season and will have the capacity to carry 600 passengers and 65 cars or 95 lane metres of trucks plus 35 cars. Commenting on the contract Austal's Managing Director, Mr Bob McKinnon said, "This latest order for a mid-sized car ferry is particularly pleasing in that it adds another important customer to our extensive list of clients. "We already have a strong forward order position and this contract obviously enhances that." Established in 1988 Virtu Ferries operates fast ferry services between Malta and Sicily. This new vessel will operate on routes from Valletta to Catania, Licata and Pozzallo. Designed specifically for this route, with aft and side ramps for rapid turnaround, the ferry will greatly expand the service to mainland Italy. The ferry is powered by six MTU 16 cylinder diesel engines driving a Kamewa propulsion system through six ZF gearboxes. Austal Sales Manager Glenn Williams said this arrangement was developed to provide the optimum solution to meet the operator's preferred engine manufacturer, speed and deadweight requirements. "We listened to what the customer wanted and our design team found the best propulsion configuration to attain Virtu Ferries' desired result. This arrangement also provides high levels of flexibility and redundancy," he said. The vessel has a maximum deadweight of 260 tonnes and will operate loaded at a speed of 35 knots providing a year-round schedule catering for car traffic and the import/export of cargo. The vehicle deck on the new ferry will offer a clear height of 4.6 metres allowing for shipment of campers and coaches, a niche market hitherto untapped by Malta. Europe is experiencing an unprecedented increase in coach travel, with hundreds of thousands of coach tourists across the continent each year and increasing numbers taking advantage of reduced rates in the shoulder months in Southern Europe. The new vessel will ensure Malta is seen as extension of mainland Europe following its accession to the EU on 1 May 2004. Passenger accommodation will be located on two decks: the tourist class upper deck for 508 passengers also provides two catering outlets, two shops and recreational facilities. The bridge deck will accommodates 92 club class passengers, with outside seats also available. The spacious seating configuration on both decks has been designed to allow for ease of circulation of passengers. The vessel is being built in accordance with the requirements, and under the survey, of the Det Norske Veritas, conforming to International Maritime Organisation codes and Malta Flag State and Italian Port State Regulations. Registration will be under the Malta Flag. Principal particulars - Auto Express 67 Overall length: 67.5 metres PSi-Daily Shipping News Page 6 10/1/2004

Cochin nails profit India s Cochin Shipyard said it had notched a healthy profit in the crucial 2003-2004 financial year. Earnings before tax were INR 305m ($6.64m), wiping out losses accumulated in 2001-2002. Cochin declared a dividend of 7%, amounting to INR 83m. A press release issued by the company said the yard had been achieving consistent profit in the last decade. Denmark s Clipper Group has six 30,000-dwt bulkers on order at Cochin. It still has options for two more of the handysize bulkers but these do not have to be exercised until the end of the year. The total value of all eight is said to be around $140m. CARNIVAL Corp has achieved a net income of more than $1Bn in a single quarter for the first time in the company s history. Breaking that barrier "is a testament to the success of the merger with P&O Princess Cruises last year," said CEO Micky Arison. During the third quarter, net income rose to $1.03Bn on revenues of $3.2Bn, compared to net income of $734M on revenues of $2.5Bn during the same period last year. The key performance indicator net revenue yield grew 8.3% in the quarter (adjusted for currency impacts). Net revenue yield is expected to continue to grow by 5-7% in the fourth quarter, but Carnival will have additional costs to deal with then. Costs are expected to increase 4-6% in this fourth quarter versus Q4 2003 due to "higher fuel costs, costs associated with the Cunard reorganisation and costs related to the hurricanes". For the year overall, Arison said Carnival Corp should end up achieving a 9% growth in yields versus 2003 and will have done so "while absorbing an extraordinarily high 17% capacity increase". The COASTAL EAGLE moored in the port of IJmuiden Photo : Jas Louwen India Steamship name to disappear INDIA Steamship Co will soon cease to exist as the KK Birla group is merging the operator into the group flagship Chambal Fertilisers and Chemicals. The proposal was cleared by the Chambal board of directors yesterday. The final merger is likely to take a few months after all shareholder and regulatory approvals have been taken. Chambal buys large volumes of liquid ammonia and phosphoric acid from the international markets for the Paradeep Phosphates plant in Orissa. India Steamship operates two ships used by Chambal for this purpose. Analysts said the group also sees a bright future for the shipping business with the upturn in the global business environment and this too could have driven the merger. For the first quarter (April-June), India Steamship reported a 23% growth in net profit to Rs32.3M ($700,000), despite a 25% fall in sales. Wartsila seals Spliethoff deal PSi-Daily Shipping News Page 9 10/1/2004

Engine builder Wartsila has won the contract to supply propulsion plants for a series of four multi-purpose ships ordered in Poland by Dutch owner Spliethoff. engines, which will give each ship a service speed of 22 knots. For each of the four 12,800-dwt Sto-Ro vessels Wartsila will deliver two twelve cylinder V46 main Wartsila will also provide each ship with two Lips controllable-pitch propellers, two Lips rudders and two Wartsila 8L20 diesel-generating sets. The Wartsila 12V46 main engines have a combined output of 25,200 kw, and the generating sets a combined electrical output of 2720 kw. Due for delivery in 2006, the ships will enter service with Transfennica, which runs ro-ro services between Finland and Estonia, Sweden, Germany, Belgium and the UK. Although designed primarily for carrying forest products and paper, the vessels will be very flexible in their cargo-carrying capacity. Within an overall length of about 205 metres, they will have a ro-ro capacity of 2800 lane-metres and a container capacity of 660-teu. They will be able to carry a diverse mixture of road trailers, commercial vehicles, MAFI trailers, paper cassettes and 20- to 45-foot containers. Rotterdam sale under scrutiny THE sale this week of its stake in training and consultancy group RISC has again focused attention on the activities of Main Port Holding, the commercial division of corporatised Port of Rotterdam. A 62.5% stake in RISC, a training and consultancy group covering fire fighting and risk management services to port and offshore companies, has been acquired by Global Safety Group, which is 70% owned by Falck in Copenhagen, Denmark. No sale price was released. Rotterdam took a controlling stake in RISC in 1993 to secure the company s survival, and the latest transaction comes as port directors are taking a closer look at Main Port Holdings after it was used as a vehicle for granting guarantees on bank loans to virtually bankrupt RDM Technology and Defence Systems. The Port of Rotterdam is in danger of suffering a 100M ($122M) loss because of this business deal, which was kept out of the books and annual reports. South African port privatisation THE private sector will be invited to participate in a bidding process to operate and manage selected South African port terminals. A spokesman for South Africa s department of public enterprises, Eugene Mokeyane, said on Wednesday that the process of licensing operators would be transparent and open to international bidders. "The facilities or services licensed to the private sector will be managed and operated on a common-user, non-discriminatory basis and will be for well-defined and ring-fenced facilities or services to ensure their operational efficiency and financial viability. His statement came after doubts had arisen over whether the concessions would go ahead. Last month, minister Alec Erwin said he would make a decision towards the end of 2004; indications had been that straight forward concessions would be dropped in favour of public/private partnerships. Mokeyane indicated that bidders would be expected to take local black economic empowerment partners and said the Durban container terminal would be the first to be licensed. Further details on the process would be made available later in the year. PSi-Daily Shipping News Page 10 10/1/2004

BP confirms big LNG order BP Shipping has finally confirmed its long awaited order for up to eight LNG carrier newbuildings worth $1.4bn giving Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) affiliate yard Samho its break into the LNG sector. In a statement Thursday BP said it has ordered four firm 155,000-cbm membrane-type LNG ships, with an option on a further four vessels. Delivery is slated for 2007 and 2008. HHI priced the vessels at around $179m each. The yard said three will be built by HHI and one by Samho Heavy Industries Co. Two of the four options rest with Samho. The vessels will be fitted with dual fuel diesel-electric propulsion, continuing the pioneering moves to find alternatives to steam turbine systems traditionally used in the LNG sector. The announcements from BP and the yard confirm reports carried in TradeWinds over the last few months. BP s group vice president for Gas, Power & Renewables Anne Quinn said the ships are needed to meet the flexible requirements of the company s customers as its LNG supply to market expands. Quinn said: This order will underpin our growth and open up a host of opportunities to capture additional value by optimizing the flow of LNG to markets particularly in the Atlantic Basin. BP ordered three LNG newbuildings at Samsung Heavy Industries in 1999. The move was ground-breaking in that the vessels were not tied in to a specific project or trade. Today the company currently owns or operates a total of eight LNG ships. On the LNG front the company claims it is the second largest nonstate supplier of gas to LNG plants in the world, citing its LNG exports from Trinidad and Tobago, Abu Dhabi, Australia, Indonesia and what it describes as its developing positions in Egypt and Angola LNG. In the sixth series of the Malabar exercises, Indian antisubmarine warfare ships will match their skills with the US Pacific Fleet's Los Angeles class nuclear submarine as well as Ticonderoga missile cruiser and Oliver Hazard Perry class guided-missile frigate. For the first time, the US Navy will include long-range maritime and submarine hunter aircraft P3C Orions in the exercises. A release from AAR said that the contract with Malaysia Airlines is a result of a recently established relationship between AAR and Malaysian maintenance company, Airod Sdn Bhd. In July 2004, AAR and Airod signed an agreement to form an alliance in order to better serve landing gear customers in the Asia Pacific region. "We are excited to work with Malaysia Airlines as we expand and offer services to more customers in the Asia Pacific region and around the world," said Pastor Lopez, general manager, AAR Landing Gear Services. "By teaming with a company like Airod, we can extend our reach and offer more Asian customers the same world-class customer service our North American customers have come to expect from AAR."
