1 Message from Lorraine Janet Dean Director HSV International Department and Frans de Jong Director of the Dutch Department Welcome to our October newsletter. Autumn has now begun and the daylight hours are getting shorter. Please ensure that you emphasise the importance of road safety with your child particularly on the way to and from school. Please do your bit to help by ensuring that you are not presenting a danger to children by parking too close to our school buildings. Once again this year we participated in Walk to School Day. Those children who did not come to school by car or walked part of the way received special HSV badges. Beste ouders, verzorgers, Hierbij onvangt u de nieuwsbrief van oktober. We hebben het allemaal weer gemerkt. De herfst is gestart en het seizoen van de donkere dagen en nattigheid is begonnen. Dat betekent voor ons allen extra opletten in het verkeer. Nogmaals willen wij u vragen om ervoor te zorgen dat de verkeerssituatie op de Nassaulaan veilig is en blijft en wij vragen u zoveel mogelijk autoverkeer voor de ingang te vermijden. New MR Representatives As ever we have families who have moved or plan to move in the foreseeable future. As a result we will be holding elections for ID MR reps in all of our locations. This is an excellent way to make a contribution to your child s school and we hope to receive a number of nominations. If you want more information please feel free to talk to one of the existing MR members, Location Leaders or Directors. More information can be found in the MR section of the news letter. MR vertegenwoordiging Op de Internationale afdeling ontstaan er in de loop van dit jaar een aantal vacatures voor de MR. Ouders van de ID die hierin geïnteresseerd zijn kunnen informatie verkrijgen bij de locatieleiders van de verschillende locaties. Meer informatie vindt u verderop in deze nieuwsbrief onder het kopje MR. School Website We have a new addition to our NSL website. We have been piloting a weekly news page. This will now follow on our KSS and VNS pages in the coming weeks. We have also given the school calendar its own title bar so is easier to find. As you know our class teachers are working hard on their class pages for the web site. Please take a look to find out about the wonderful things the children are learning. Hier vindt u wekelijks een update van activiteiten die geweest zijn en die komen gaan. De plannen zijn er binnenkort een zgn. RSS feed aan deze pagina toe te voegen zodat u meteen geïnformeerd wordt als er iets nieuws op de site staat. Fund Raising and Donations We are thrilled to let you know that our KSS site has received a generous donation of 4000 Euros from the employees of a local company P-Direct. A few months ago Martin Smits who works at the company came to tell us of their plan to help a local school. He told us of a fundraising project his company was doing, which involved everyone getting more active in their office. They wanted to pick a local school to raise funds for and as KSS was the nearest

2 school to their office, they chose us! They held a variety of sponsored fitness related activities. We plan to use the money to buy a large piece of play equipment for the KSS playground. We are very grateful for this and are going to look to build such relations for our other locations. Fondwerving en donaties De locatie KSS van de Internationale afdeling heeft van een bedrijf een donatie van 4000 ontvangen. Via een gesponsord fitness programma hebben de medewerkers geld bijeen gehaald om een lokale instelling te sponsoren. Hartelijk dank voor deze gulle gave. Indien er mensen zijn die geïnteresseerd zijn in het sponsoren van de school in welke vorm dan ook bijvoorbeeld de bibliotheek, ICT, neemt u dan gerust contact op met de schoolleiding. Onze internationale school voor speciaal onderwijs Lighthouse heeft de afgelopen jaren uit sponsoring en donatie een bedrag van mogen ontvangen. Wij zijn al blij met elke vorm en kleine bedragen. Parental Survey. We were thrilled that so many of you completed our parental survey. The response rates were ID KSS 65%, NSL 80%, VNS 72% and NA NSL 88%. The survey identified many positive things about our school but also gave us some areas for development. The leadership has been looking at the results carefully and in October we are going to look at them with the whole HSV leadership team and incorporate the findings into our strategic plan for the next 5 years. We will placing the survey on the school website soon and plan to send you a summary in November. This type of survey fits in with the school inspection cycle and is carried out every four years. If you want to give feed back in-between we are always willing to hear from you and you can do that by or arrange to meet with us. Oudertevredenheidspeiling Hierbij een woord van dank naar alle ouders. Op de Nassaulaan was de respons 88%. Dat betekent dat veel ouders de moeite hebben genomen om de vragenlijst in te vullen. De resultaten worden geanalyseerd op managementniveau voor de gehele stichting en op locatieniveau. De resultaten van deze analyse zullen we gebruiken bij ons Strategisch Beleidsplan voor de komende 5 jaren. We verwachten de resultaten in november op de website te plaatsen. Het bevragen van ouders en later ook leerkrachten en kinderen past binnen de kwaliteitskaders van de rijksinspectie. Mocht u alvast van te voren feedback willen geven dan kan dat altijd via de mail of maak even een afspraak met een van ons. School Camp Children in ID 6 and NA7 are currently at school camp in Gorssel. Miss Dean is visiting on Wednesday and Mr. Frans on Thursday. We are certain that they will have a wonderful time and hope that they have some lovely Autumn weather. The teachers plan to post some pictures of camp on the web site while they are there. Schoolkamp Op dit moment zijn de kinderen van ID6 en NA7 op kamp in Gorssel. Mss. Lorraine Dean bezoekt de groep op woensdag en meester Frans de Jong gaat donderdag op bezoek. De weersvoorspelling is redelijk dus kan het geplande programma normaal doorgang vinden. Op de website vindt u een link met foto s en informatie van wat er die dag heeft plaatsgevonden. Book Week

3 We will be celebrating National children s Book Week in all of our locations the week of October 10 th. The theme this year is Hello World. For more details see the local site news Boekenweek De Boekenweek start op 08 oktober. Het thema is Hello World. Vele activiteiten staan op de rol. Let u op de separate berichtgeving en de aankondigingen op NSL Laatste Nieuws. Holiday Dates Study Days School is closed for the October holiday from Monday 22nd until Friday28th October. There is no school for children in IDR ID1, ID2 and ID3 on Wednesday November 21 st because there is a Study Day. Vakantie en vrije dagen De herfstvakantie is van maandag 22 oktober tot en met vrijdag 26 oktober. Op 21 november is er een studiedag, kinderen van groepen 1 tot en met 4 zijn dan vrij. School Reports and Parents Parent Consultations You will shortly receive a letter about our first parents consultations for this school year. This is a time to discuss your child s first school report which you will receive on Friday 19 th October. We hope that you are enjoying our new location based newsletter. Please remember if you want to find out what is happening at our other locations you can check them out on our school web site at Rapportage Voor de herfstvakantie ontvangt u de eerste rapportage van dit jaar. Charity Shoeboxes In December we will be participating in Action Schoenmaatjes (a shoebox collection). This is a chance for the children to help children in deprived countries, such as Uganda, Iraq and Malawi. The children will fill a shoe box with school equipment, such as writing and colouring pencils, rulers, etc. Also to be included is a toiletry item and a toy. These will then be sorted and sent to children in orphanages, refugee camps and shelters for street children, in countries around the world. Actie Schoenendoos Zoals elk jaar doen we dit jaar ook weer mee met de schoendozen actie. Dit is een actie om kinderen die het aanzienlijk minder hebben op een eenvoudige manier te helpen. Dit zijn kinderen uit landen zoals Oeganda, Irak, Malawi ed. In december gaat dit plaats vinden. Let u op de berichtgeving hierover. 4 MR Newsletter Contribution As the new school year gets into full swing so is the MR. For our new parents the MR would like to welcome you to the HSV family and for those familiar faces welcome back to yet another action packed year. For those who do not know, MR stands for Medezeggenschapsraad and is the parent teacher representative body what works together with school management on school policy and other school matters. The HSV MR meets between all three locations 4 times a year and every other month on a local basis with the location leaders. For more information on the MR please visit the HSV website or ask your local MR Representative. At the end of the last school year Murali Karri, parent representative KSS resigned as MR member and as the Chairman of the MR. The MR would like to thank Murali for his contribution to the MR and wish him well in the future. Until a new Chairperson can be appointed Andrew Proudfoot, parent representative VNS, will act as the Chairman of the MR. Due to the relocation of his job, Andrew and his family will be leaving VNS at the end of December 2012 so will not be able to take up the role on a full time basis. During the first MR meeting of this school year, held on the 24 th of September 2012, the process for the election of new MR parent representatives at NSL ID, KSS and VNS was discussed and agreed that we will be looking for one parent per location to continue the good work of the MR. If you are interested in getting more involved in the school lives of your children and making a difference please put your names forward to the MR at mr@hsvdenhaag.nl, giving a short description of yourself and what you believe you could bring to the parent teacher body along with which child s name, location and class. All nominations need to be in by the end of term - 19 October The names of nominees will be sent out after the midterm break and elections are scheduled to be held on the 12 th and 13 th November 2012 at the three locations. Successful candidates will be notified shortly afterwards, in time to join the next MR meeting on the 3 rd of December Other topics currently being discussed at the MR include; Year Report, Financial summary for 2011, HSV School Guide, School website, Communication Strategy. You can add the following link as favourite and you will be guided directly to the MR pages : MR Nieuws We zitten al weer een paar weken in het nieuwe schooljaar. We heten de nieuwe kinderen en hun ouders van harte welkom bij de HSV familie. Als Medezeggenschapsraad, met vertegenwoordiging van ouders en leerkrachten, werken we nauw samen met het management op het gebied van schoolbeleid en ander praktische zaken. De MR komt 4 keer per jaar bij elkaar en om de maand praat de MR met de locatie leiders. Voor meer informatie bezoek de MR pagina s op de HSV website. Aan het eind van het jaar nemen afscheid van de MR, Muralli Karri, voorzitter MR en ouder vertegenwoordiger. We wensen hem en zijn gezin veel succes voor de toekomst en danken hem voor zijn inzet. Tot de benoeming van de nieuwe voorzitter treedt Andrew Proudfoot, ouder vertegenwoordiger, op als tijdelijk voorzitter. Echter Andrew zal de MR ook aan het eind van het jaar verlaten.

5 Tijdens de laatste MR vergadering, 24 september, is er gesproken over de verkiezing van nieuwe ouder vertegenwoordiging voor Nassaulaan Internationaal Department, KSS en VNS. We zijn dus op zoek naar nieuwe MR leden vanuit deze locaties om het goede werk van de MR voor te zetten. Als je geïnteresseerd om een bijdrage te leveren aan de MR laat het ons dan weten via Geef aan wie je bent en wat je zou kunnen bijdragen aan de MR. Geef ook aan op welke locatie je kind(eren) zitten en in welke klas. De kandidaatstelling sluit 19 oktober. De namen van kandidaten zullen na de herfstvakantie worden gepubliceerd en de verkiezingen staan gepland voor 12 & 13 november op de 3 locaties. We streven er naar dat de nieuwe gekozen MR leden aan de eerst volgende MR vergadering van 3 december te laten deelnemen. Andere onderwerpen die de revue zijn gepasseerd tijdens de laatste MR vergadering zijn: Jaarverslag, Financieel Jaarverslag 2011, HSV schoolgids, Website, Communicatie strategie. De notulen zullen binnenkort op de website worden gepubliceerd. Bijgaand de URL voor een directe toegang tot de MR pagina op de website: News from NSL NSL Nieuws News from NSL NSL Nieuws Kinderboekenweek Het thema van de Boekenweek is Hello World. De kinderen zijn in de klas al volop bezig, een eerste aanzet is het maken van vlaggen. Ze zijn ook druk bezig met het leren van het boekenweeklied in 2 talen. De opening zal plaats vinden in de gymzaal, hier mogen de kinderen verkleed komen in traditioneel kostuum. Natuurlijk ontbreken de nieuwe boeken niet. Elke klas krijgt zijn deel. Op vrijdag 12 oktober geven ID2 en NA3 een optreden over de kinderboeken week. De ouders van ID2 en NA3 zijn allemaal uitgenodigd. Het optreden zal plaatsvinden om in het speellokaal. Aansluitend zal er een video getoond worden waarin de kinderen dansen en zingen op het liedje hallo wereld. Boekenmarkten Maandag 8 okt. Lettertuin, Nederlandstalige boeken, van tot Dinsdag 9 okt. Rainbow Corner and Usborne books, van Woensdag 10 okt. Rainbow Corner and Usborne books, van Boeken kaften U kent het misschien wel uit de studententijd, het kaften van de studieboeken. Ook wij willen dat de boeken langer mee gaan en er goed uit blijven zien. Gelukkig hebben we een aantal ouders gevonden die dit klusje voor ons willen klaren. Hartelijk dank. Children s Book Week 8-12 October The theme for Children s Book Week this year is Hello World. In preparation for the week children will make flags to decorate the school. Pupils are learning the children s book week song in English and Dutch. On Monday 8 th October the Opening of Children s Book Week will take place in the gym. Children are welcome to dress up in clothes from their home country for that day or may come to school in traditional Dutch clothing.during the Opening each class will receive a parcel full of books for their class.

6 On Friday 12th October, ID2 and NA3 will give a performance about the children s book week. The parents of ID2 and NA3 are all invited. The performance will take place at 2.30 in the speellokaal. After the presentation we will show a video where the children are dancing and singing to the song hallo wereld. Book Sales: Dutch Book Sale from Lettertuin: on Monday 8 th October English Book Sale from Rainbow Corner and Usborne books: Tuesday 9 th October after school, Wednesday 106 th October from Children s Book Market after school on Friday 12 th October-Children bring their old books to sell, this is a lovely occasion use it to buy books cheaply and to sort out your old books. Covering books A huge thank you to the parents who gave their time covering books in the staff room. We hope this well keep our new books in good condition somewhat longer. OAC Dit schooljaar zijn we gestart met een nieuwe OAC, ouderactiviteitencommissie. We hebben afscheid genomen van een aantal ouders, Julie Wouterson, Edward Groen en Cathy Trainor Donnica Henry. De nieuwe leden zijn: Mireille Rost Onnes, Milou Kuiken, Anja Figee, David Brounts, Jeannie Brenne and Adam Waters. De veiling tijdens het zomerfeest was een groot succes. Er is een bedrag van opgehaald. Dit wordt besteed aan dozen gevuld met spelletjes voor regenachtige dagen. OAC At the end of the schoolyear we said goodbye to a number of parents from the OAC. They are Julie Wouterson, Edward Groen, Cathy Traynor and Donnica Henry. The new members are: Mireille Rost Onnes, Milou Kuiken, Anja Figee, David Brounts, Jeannie Brenne and Adam Waters. The auction at the Zomerfeest was a success. We made a profit of This is meant for the children and used for rainy day boxes. Veiligheid Hierbij doe ik een beroep op de ouders die per fiets, bakfiets hun kinderen brengen. Het is natuurlijk geweldig dat u niet met de auto komt. Maar wilt u uw fiets, bakfiets niet parkeren op de brug en ook niet in de loop/vluchtroute van het gebouw naar de uitgang. Namens de kinderen bedankt! Traffic Safety at NSL Safety of our pupils is the first priority. Please try your best to avoid parking on the NSL itself. Turning your car at the school gate is also very dangerous. At peak times in the morning and afternoon there are lots of bicycles of all descriptions and the entrance/exit is blocked. We all need to be courteous to one another and allow one another to pass. We ask all parents and other members of the school community to observe this.

7 Communicatie Zoals u in deze nieuwsbrief al eerder heeft gelezen staat op de website de link NSL Laatste Nieuws. Hier brengen we u op de hoogte van wetenswaardigheden die er in de week zijn gebeurd en tevens staat er de kalender met komende activiteiten. Via de RSS feed kunt u zich opgeven om direct ons te kunnen volgen. Onze huisfotograaf hierbij is Ruben uit NA7. Buiten de Band Vorig schooljaar heeft een werkgroep, bestaande uit ouders en leerkrachten, gekeken of ons onderwijs nog beter kan. Zij hebben met name gekeken of de manier van werken zoals we dat doen met IPC, een goede werkwijze is voor kinderen die op een ander manier leren dan de gebruikelijke. De werkgroep heeft een advies hierover aan de directie aangeboden. Na bestudering komen we hierop terug. Communication at NSL As written above we want to give you a taste of weekly happenings at NSL. Gevonden voorwerpen Deze zullen 1 keer per maand worden uitgestald en daarna worden geschonken aan een goed doel. Volgende week liggen ze weer op de tafel bij de ingang. Lost Property Lost property will be emptied monthly and remaining items will be given to Charity. Please search in a timely manner for lost property of your child. Next week the lost property will be on display. Gras Het aanwezige gras op ons speelplein is al een zorg van jaren. Echt groeien, wil het niet. We zijn blij te hebben vernomen dat de MR een initiatief heeft genomen om hier iets aan te gaan doen. Zij willen geld bijeen halen om het gras te vernieuwen. U ontvangt hierover van de MR een bericht. Grass The grass at NSL has been an issue for a number of year we are very pleased to hear about an initiative for our NSL parents on the MR to raise money to improve the grassed area. You will hear about that in a letter from the MR. We hope that you are able to support this. If any of you have contacts who would be interested in sponsoring development of our outside areas, technology or libraries we would be very keen to hear form you or them. These are all areas that we would like develop in the coming years and take a lot of money so every little helps. Fundraising is something that Lighthouse has become very involved with in recent years and they have received donations in the region of 75,000 Euros. It would be fantastic if we could do something similar.
