Er wordt verwacht dat een basiscursus analyse gekend is en men concentreert zich op meer geavanceerde onderwerpen zoals L p ruimten, Sobolev ruimten, Fourier transformatie, distributies, potentiaaltheorie, variatierekening enz. Samengevat: een boek over analyse met oog voor de toepassingen maar het blijft serieuse wiskundige analyse die ver af staat van numerieke aspecten of van practisch technisch wetenschappelijk rekenen. These are lecture notes for students that need hard analysis in their education like e.g. physicists. Unnecessary abstraction is avoided and the proofs are constructive as far as possible. The reader is expected to have a good knowledge of a basic analysis course and one concentrates on more advanced topics like L p spaces, Sobolev spaces, Fourier transforms, distributions, potential theory, calculus of variations etc. Ro resume: a book about analysis with an eye for applications but it is still serious mathematical analysis that is far away from the numerical aspects and from practical scientific computing.

Sedertdien heeft er op numeriek gebied een grote (r)evolutie plaats gehad, zeker voor het oplossen van differentiaalvergelijkingen. De nadruk ligt hier dan ook nog voornamelijk op het inzicht in het analytisch oplossen waarbij de Greense functie centraal staat. In zijn ongeëvenaarde stijl om wiskundige begrippen op een niet-wiskundige manier aan te brengen, introduceert Lanczos elementen van lineaire algebra, numerieke analyse, Fourier analyse, systeemtheorie en veel meer, alles met een fysische onderbouw waardoor een wiskundig begrip steeds zijn juiste betekenis krijgt in het kader van differentiaalvergelijkingen. Voor de numerieke wiskundigen is het aan te raden als goede achtergrond informatie; voor de niet numeriek aangelegde toegepaste wiskundigen een niet te missen basiswerk dat bovendien heerlijk is om lezen, maar door de stijl misschien minder geschikt als naslagwerk. This is the reprint of the original edition of 96. Since then, a considerable numerical (r)evolution took place, especially for differential equations. The emphasis is here still on the insight in finding the solution by analysis, where Green s function plays a central role. In his inimitable style, Lanczos introduces elements of linear algebra, numerical analysis, Fourier analysis, systems theory and much more, everything backed by a physical interpretation which justifies the introduction of every mathematical concept in the framework of differential equations. For the numerical analyst, it is recommended background material, for the non-numerical applied mathematician, it is a fundamental work, not to miss and a reading delight, but because of its style maybe not so good as a reference work.
W. Gautschi Numerical analysis, an introduction, Birkhäuser Verlag, Boston-Basel-Berlin, (997). ISBN 0-876-3895-4, xiii+506 pages, DM 8, hc. De klassieke onderwerpen worden behandeld op een klassieke manier (fouten, benadering en interpolatie, differentiëren en integreren, nulpunten en stelsels, gewone differentiaalvergelijkingen). Merk op: geen lineaire algebra, optimalisatie of partiële differentiaalvergelijkingen. De auteur concentreert zich op de analyse (zonder echt abstract te zijn) en algoritmen; praktische toepassingen ontbreken helemaal, zelfs academische numerieke voorbeelden komen nagenoeg niet voor. Wel een lange lijst theoretische oefeningen en een aantal computer-opdrachten per hoofdstuk. De theorie is echter licht verteerbaar en nooit saai. Voor moeilijker stukken verwijst men naar de literatuur en/of geeft men wat commentaar achteraan een hoofdstuk. Samengevat: hoort bij de betere handboeken op de markt, gesteund op 30 jaar onderwijservaring van de auteur, maar zonder echt vernieuwend of verrassend te zijn. The classical subjects are treated in a classical way (errors, approximation and interpolation, differentiation and integration, zeros and systems of equations, ODE s). Note: no linear algebra, optimisation or PDE s. The author concentrates on the analysis (without being abstract) and the algorithms; practical applications are completely abscent, even academic numerical examples are barely found. There is a long list of theoretical exercises and some machine-assignments per chapter. The theory is easily digested and never dull. For the more difficult parts, the reader is referred to the literature and/or some comments are given at the end of a chapter. Conclusion: one of the better handbooks on the market, based on 30 years of teaching experience of the author, but without being innovative or surprising.

Bij numerieke simulatie worden dikwijls heel grote symmetrische stelsels Ax = b iteratief opgelost. Daarbij kan bv. de fout e n = x n x in stap n geschreven worden als e n = p n (A)e 0, met p n een veelterm van graad n. Projectie op een deelruimte vereist een orthogonale basis, dus orthogonale veeltermen. Dit boek begint daarom met een studie van orthogonale veeltermen. Vanuit deze invalsweg worden dan de iteratieve methoden en hun convergentieeigenschappen afgeleid. Voor de courante methoden wordt een MATLAB implementatie en de complexiteit ervan gegeven. Methoden die gebruik maken van (een schatting van) het spectrum van A en preconditionering komen veel minder aan bod. Het is een uitstekende en zeer toegankelijke inleiding tot de besproken methoden, ook (en misschien vooral) geschikt voor buitenstaanders. In numerical simulation one often has to solve symmetrical linear systems Ax = b iteratively. Then the error e n in step n is for example given by e n = x n x = p n (A)e 0 with p n a polynomial of degree n. Projection on a subspace requires an orthogonal basis, thus orthogonal polynomials. This book starts therefore with a study of orthogonal polynomials. From this viewpoint, several iterative methods and their convergence properties are derived. For the most common methods, a MATLAB implementation and its work-load are given. Methods that use (an estimate of) the spectrum of A and/or preconditioning receive much less attention. It is an excellent introduction to the methods discussed, also (and maybe especially) for outsiders.

Dit is volume 9 uit de SIAM classics reeks: een ongewijzigde herdruk van de 2de uitgave (970, McGraw Hill ste ed. 960). Dit boek had grote impact bij het verschijnen omdat het als eerste verspreide resultaten groepeerde. De theory wordt aangebracht vanuit de toepassingen (optimalisatie, controle, econometrie, differentiaalvergelijkingen,... ). Het leest wat chaotisch door de veelheid aan onderwerpen maar bevat een schat aan resultaten (dikwijls vermomd als oefeningen) die in moderne handboeken niet altijd meer zijn opgenomen. Het is niet erg numeriek, maar wel zeer toegepast, zodat het nog steeds interessant kan zijn voor lezers vanuit deze toepassingen (economie, biologie, theoretische fysica, statistiek, controle theorie,... ). Volume 9 from the SIAM classics series: reprint of the 2nd ed. (970, McGraw Hill st ed. 960). This book had a great impact when it first appeared because it was the first to collect many scattered results. The theory is introduced starting from the applications (optimisation, control, econometrics, differential equations,... ). It reads a bit chaotic because of the many subjects treated, but contains a wealth of results (often disguised as exercises) that are not always to be found in modern text books. It is not really numerical, but it is very applied so that it may still be of interest for readers from these applications (economics, biology, physics, statistics, control,... ).

Gabor-analyse is de tijd-frequentie analyse gebaseerd op elementaire bouwstenen die ontstaan door translatie en modulatie van één functie. Een voorbeeld is de korte-tijd-fourier transformatie met Gaussiaans venster. Een voorloper van de wavelet-theorie dus. Sinds het artikel van Gabor (946) is dit het eerste boek volledig aan dit onderwerp gewijd. Het is voorbestemd een standaardwerk te worden. Goed leesbaar voor leken (met enige wiskundige achtergrond), is het een samenvatting van zowel fundamentele theoretische aspecten, maar ook van numerieke aspecten en mogelijke toepassingen. Een aanrader voor wiskundigen en signaalverwerkers. Gabor-analysis is the time-frequency analysis based on buiding block generated by translation and modulation of one function. An example is the short time Fourier transform with a Gaussian window. It is thus an predecessor of wavelet theory. Since Gabor s paper (946), this is the first book completely devoted to this subject. It is bound to become a standard reference book. It is quite readable for ousiders (provided they have some mathematical background), and contains a summary of theoretical aspects, but also of numerical aspects and several possible applications. Warmly recommended for the mathematics and signal processing communities.

Het is al een tijd geweten dat klassieke benaderingsproblemen uit de complexe analyse (Nevanlinna-Pick en Hermite-Fejer interpolatie, Nehari extensie probleem,... ) toepassingen hebben in predictie, optimale controle, verstrooiingstheorie, enz. De klassieke scalaire problemen zijn ook reeds op verschillende manieren uitgebreid naar matrix- en operator-waardige functies van een complexe variabele. In deel A wordt hier nu ook nog de variabele vervangen door een operator. In deel B worden de analoge tijdsvariabele problemen besproken. Hoewel er vele toepassingen zijn blijft het een boek over operatortheorie met een sterke invloed van wiskundige systeemtheorie. Het is zeer vlot leesbaar en zal zeker de wiskundigen en onderzoekers in de systeemtheorie boeien. It is well known that classical approximation problems from complex analysis (Nevanlinna-Pick and Hermite-Fejer interpolation, the Nehari extension problem,... ) have applications in prediction, optimal control, scattering theory etc. The classical scalar problems have been generalized in several ways to matrix and operator values functions of a complex variable. In part A of this book, the complex variable is replaced by an operator. In part B, the time varying analoguous problems are discussed. Although there are many applications, it is in the first place a book about operator theory with a strong influence from mathematical system theory. It is a pleasure to read and it is certainly of interest to mathematicians and researchers in system theory.

Dit boek is een compilatie van teksten die opgedragen zijn aan Carl M. Pearcy voor zijn zestigste verjaardag. Pearcy is (co-)auteur van een hondertal artikels en vijf boeken over operator theorie. Dit boek bevat dan ook 4 gespecialiseerde teksten over zeer diverse onderwerpen uit de operator theorie. De artikels zijn allemaal vrij kort en gaan over recent onderzoek. Er zijn geen echte overzichtsartikels opgenomen. Hoewel een kenner sommige artikels zou kunnen in verband brengen met Hankel operatoren en systeemtheorie is er echter geen of toch geen direct verband met concrete toepassingen. This book is a collection of papers dedicated to the sixtieth birthday of Carl M. Pearcy. Pearcy is (co-)author of about hundred papers and five books dealing with operator theory issues. This book contains 4 specialized papers on diverse subjects from operator theory. The papers are all rather short and report on recent research. There are no real survey papers included. Although a specialist may relate some papers with Hankel operators and systems theory, there is no or at least no direct relation with practical applications.

Originele elementen in dit boek: een inleiding op meerschaligheid in informatie en natuur, grondige studie van wavelet matrices (matrices met als rijen de filtercoëfficiënten van schaal en wavelet filters), connectiecoëfficiënten (inwendige producten met afgeleiden van schaal- en wavelet functies). Dit naast meer gebruikelijke onderwerpen: multiresolutie, Mallat-algoritme, etc. De behandeling is vrij theoretisch en men moet heel wat matrix algebra verwerken voor men aan wavelets toe is. Er zijn wel verscheidene hoofdstukken over toepassingen: Wavelet-Galerkin voor partiële differentiaalvergelijkingen (tamelijk uitgebreid), datacompressie en communicatie (eerder beperkt en niet echt verhelderend). Lifting en multiwavelets worden enkel vermeld (te recent). Een wat eigenzinnige aanpak van wavelets, relatief theoretisch, die ik echter niet zou aanraden als eerste kennismaking met wavelets. Original ideas are: an introduction to the multiscale structure of information and nature, a thourough discussion of wavelet matrices (matrices whose rows contain the coefficients of the scaling and wavelet functions), connection coefficients (inner products with derivatives of scaling and wavelet functions). This besides the usual subjects: multiresolution, Mallat-algorithm, etc. The treatment is rather theoretical and the reader has to work through a lot of matrix algebra before he arrives at wavelets. There are several chapters on applications: Wavelet-Galerkin for partial differential equations (rather extensive) data compression and communication (rather short and not really enlightening). Lifting and multiwavelets are only mentioned (because too recent). A headstrong approach to wavelets, relatively theoretical, which I would rather not recommend as a first acqaintance with wavelets.

Hier worden allerlei golfproblemen samengebracht die normaal in verschillende handboeken zijn te vinden. Er zijn 3 delen met toenemende complexiteit: van lineaire over niet lineaire tot meer geavanceerde aspecten. Toepassingen zijn zeer divers: de snaar, geluids- en watergolven, golven in elastische materialen, in gassen, elektromagnetische golven, verkeersgolven, (elektro)chemische golven, (inverse) verstrooiïnsfenomenen,... Het gaat hier enkel om het analytisch oplossen van allerlei golfvergelijkingen, tot en met Burgers, Korteweg-de Vries en niet lineaire Schrödinger vergelijkingen. De numerieke methoden komen echter niet aan bod. Het verband tussen de wiskunde en de fysische achtergrond wordt klaar en duidelijk uitgelegd. Het is vlot leesbaar voor een lezer met enige achtergrond in toegepaste wiskunde. De stijl en de oefeningen bij ieder hoofdstuk maken het perfect geschikt als handboek bij een cursus toegepaste wiskunde. This book brings together all kinds of wave phenomena that are normally found in different handbooks. There are 3 parts with increasing complexity: from linear over nonlinear to advanced topics. The applications are very diverse: the string, audio and water waves, waves in elastic solids, in gasses, electromagnetic waves, traffic waves, (electro)chemical waves, (inverse) scattering problems, etc. It concerns only the analytical solution of all types of wave equations, up to and including the Burgers, Korteweg-de Vries and nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The numerical aspects methods are not treated. The connections between the mathematics and the physical background are well covered. It is very accessible for a reader with some background in applied mathematics. The style and the exercises after each chapter make it perfectly fit as lecture notes for a course in applied mathematics.

Dit boek bevat 29 (relatief korte) teksten voorgesteld op de 7th international workshop in analysis and its applications, Un. Maine, 997. Ze zijn onderverdeeld in 4 groepen: Sommeerbaarheid en convergentie, singuliere integralen en vermenigvuldigers, integraal operatoren en functionaalanalyse, en asymptotiek en toepassingen. Dit verraadt al dat het hier om eerder theoretische verhalen gaat. Hoewel de resultaten aan de basis liggen van bruikbare technieken voor allerlei toepassingen (benaderingen, integralen, differentiaalvergelijkingen, (integraal)transformaties, foutenschattingen, bemonsteringstechnieken, wavelets,... ) en hoewel die ook tot op zekere hoogte behandeld worden, zijn het voornamelijk stellingen die bewezen worden. Nergens anders heb ik zoveel informatie rond dit thema verzameld gezien. Heel interessant voor toegepaste wiskundigen die niet op de directe implementatie uit zijn. This book contains 29 (relatively short) contributions that were presented at the 7th international workshop in analysis and its applications, Un. Maine, 997. They are subdivided into 4 groups: Summability and convergence, singular integrals and multipliers, integral operators and functional analysis, and asymptotics and applications. This illustrates that the texts are rather theoretical. Although the results are at the basis of many useful techniques for all sorts of applications (approximation, integration, differential equations, (integral) transforms, error estimates, sampling techniques, wavelets, etc.) and although these applications are also discussed to some extend, it are mainly theorems that are proved. I have never seen so much information about this subject collected in one volume. Most interesting for applied mathematicians for whom an immediate implementation is not their main concern.

Die dynamica wordt beschreven door een differentiaalvergelijking. Op die manier kan een kromme evolueren naar een toestand van minimale energie. Daardoor kan men een contour in een beeld bepalen en aan segmentatie doen. Dit is slechts één van de voorbeelden hoe in dit boek via een fundamentele aanpak allerlei praktische problemen van beeldverwerking en computer visie kunnen opgelost worden: bewegingsvolgers, contrastverbetering, vorm uit schaduw, deconvolutie, ruisverwijdering, enz. Tegelijk fundamenteel en praktisch, met de nodige (korte) inleiding op differentiaalmeetkunde, differentiaalvergelijkingen en hun numerieke methoden, en waar nodig wat input van thermodynamica, optica, e.d.m. De fundamentele principes worden uitgelegd, voor details zijn er talrijke verwijzingen naar de literatuur. Voor wie bereid is de nodige wiskunde erbij te nemen zal een wondere wereld opengaan. Toegepaste wiskunde op zijn best. Een aanrader voor onderzoekers en practici. Curves can evolve as a function of a parameter. The dynamics are described by differential equations. Thus, the curve can evolve to a state of minimal energy. In this way it is possible to find a contour in an image and do the segmentation. This is only one of the examples of how in this book via a fundamental approach many practical problems if image processing and computer vision can be solved: tracking, contrast enhancement, shape from shade, deconvolution, denoising, etc. At the same time fundamental and practical, with the necessary (short) introduction to differential geometry, differential equations and their numerical methods, and where needed some input from thermodynamics, optics and the like. The fundamental principles are clearly explained, for details there are many references to the literature. For those who are prepared to also take the mathematics, a marvelous world will open. Applied mathematics at its best. Recommended for researchers and practitioners.

Het Scilab-team geeft in de 3 delen van dit boek () een gebruikersgids voor de taal (2) een beschrijving van een aantal toolboxen (3) twee complexere toepassingen. Het boek is dus in de eerste plaats een handleiding bij Scilab. Er zijn tussendoor natuurlijk vele praktische ingenieursvoorbeeldjes (en de twee grote in deel 3) te vinden, maar dit is eerder een illustratie bij Scilab en niet omgekeerd. De CD bevat Scilab voor verschillende systemen (versie 2.4 opgelet huidige web-versie is 2.6), documentatie in verschillende formaten, een aantal extra toolboxen en de voorbeelden uit het boek. Onmisbaar voor de Scilab-gebruiker. Een docent toegepaste wiskunde die vastzit aan matlab of een andere taal kan hier eventueel wel inspiratie vinden voor een aantal ingenieursvoorbeelden. The CD contains Scilab for several systems (version 2.4 note current version on the web is 2.6), documentation in several formats, a number of extra contributed toolboxes and the examples of the book. A must for the Scilab user. A teacher in applied mathematics who is stuck to matlab or some other language can however find here some inspiration for a number of engineering problems.

Meerdimensionale benadering is meer dan een veralgemening van naar meer dimensies. Het vergt specifieke technieken en problemen. Het is een afzonderlijke discipline. Negen hoofdstukken werden hier samengebracht met als thema s: radiale basisfuncties, shift invariante ruimtes en meerlagige benadering. De toepassingen handelen over numerieke analyse, signaalverwerking, CAGD, meerdimensionale splines, enz. De onderwerpen zijn binnen het domein benaderingstheorie al relatief gespecialiseerd, bovendien wordt een inleiding gegeven die slechts bevattelijk is voor gevorderde studenten en onderzoekers. De auteurs brengen de lezer wel tot op de rand van wat nu gekend is. Voor de (beginnende) onderzoeker geeft het een mooi overzicht van de stand van zaken, waaruit hij eventueel een studie-onderwerp kan halen. De praktijk-mens zal het eerder theoretisch vinden, hoewel vele toepassingen behandeld worden. Zowel voor de onderzoeker als de toepasser is dit een een uitstekende gids bij de gespecialiseerde literatuur. Multidimenional approximation is more than just a generalization from to more dimensions. It requires specific techniques and problems. It is a distinct discipline. Nine chapters were brought together in this book. The subjects are radial basis functions, shift invariant spaces, and multi-layer approximation. The applications include numerical analysis, signal processing, CAGD, multidimensional splines, etc. The subjects are relatively specialized in the area of approximation theory. Moreover, the authors give an introduction that is only comprehensible for advanced students or researchers. The authors bring the reader to the spearhead of current research. For the (young) researcher, this is a nice survey of the state of the art which can be helpful e.g., to choose a research subject. The practitioner will probably find this rather theoretical, although many applications are treated. For the researcher as well as the practitioner this is an excellent guide to the specialized literature.

Dit is m.i. de meest eenvoudige beschikbare inleidende cursus tot de (discrete) wavelettransformatie. Gebaseerd op het werk van Sweldens/Daubechies. Dank zij het lifting schema, wordt enkel elementaire calculus en wat lineaire algebra als voorkennis vereist in deel. Pas in het tweede deel komen begrippen van Fourieranalyse en digitale signaalverwerking aan bod. In een derde deel wordt veel aandacht besteed aan implementatie (matlab Uni Wave toolbox). Andere hoogtepunten: relatie lifting-filterbanken, wavelet packets en het tijd-frequentievlak. Veel voorbeelden (signalen van lengte 8 die manueel zijn na te rekenen) en oefeningen, weinig (eigenlijk geen) bewijzen. Een absolute aanrader als inleidende cursus op de discrete wavelet-transformatie als men zich weinig om de wiskundige analyse bekommert maar eerder op implementatie is gericht. This is in my opinion the simplest available introduction to the (discrete) wavelet transform. Based on the work of Sweldens/Daubechies. Thanks to lifting, only elementary calculus and some linear algebra is needed in part. Only in the second part notions from Fourier analysis and digital signal processing are considered. In a third part, much attention is paid to implementation (matlab Uni Wave toolbox). Other highlights: relation lifting - filter banks, wavelet packets, and the time-frequency plane. Many examples (signals of length 8 that can be checked manually) and exercises, few (in fact no) proofs. Absolutely recommended as an introductory course to the discrete wavelet transform if one is not really interested in the mathematical analysis but rather implementation oriented.

Stellingen worden wel geformuleerd maar bewijzen worden zoveel als mogelijk vermeden. In de plaats daarvan zijn er heel veel voorbeelden en stukken maple code waarmee de lezer meteen aan de slag kan. De auteur heeft duidelijk gekozen voor een zo breed mogelijke aanpak met zoveel mogelijk onderwerpen ten koste van (theoretische) diepgang. Precies door de minder theoretische aanpak wordt het boek wel bruikbaar in een tweede of derde jaar universiteit of hogeschool. Het boek zal echter pas renderen indien men met de maple code aan de slag gaat en oefeningen oplost onder het didactisch motto van dit boek: al doende leert men. This is a textbook with exercises after each chapter and solutions at the end. Theorems are formulated but proofs are avoided as much as possible. Instead there are many examples and pieces of maple code that can be used immediately by the reader. The author has obviously chosen for a coverage of the material that is as broad as possible and with as many topics as possible at the expense of (theoretical) depth. Because of this less theoretical approach, the book can be used even in a second or third year of the university or technical high school. The book will only be effective if the reader starts using the maple code and solves the exercises using the didactical motto of this book: learn by experience.
