Daarnaast is zij vorig jaar negende geworden tijdens de Londen Marathon. Doorbraak De TCS Amsterdam Marathon in 2011 was haar doorbrak. Ze liep een tijd van 2.22.08 verbeterde hiermee het parcours record met ruim zeven minuten. Uitgestapt en botsing In 2013 stond Gelana aan de start van de marathon op de wereldkampioenschappen van Moskou. Ze stapte hier na ruim tien kilometer uit. Tijdens de Marathon van Londen 2013 botste Gelana bij een verzorgingsplaats op 15 km op een rolstoelatleet. Ze liep weer terug naar de kopgroep, maar het kwaad was al geschied. Withdrawal and collision In 2013 Gelana lined up at the start of the marathon at the Moscow World Championships but withdrew after running just over 10 kilometres. Later that year Gelana collided with a wheelchair athlete at a water station at the 15-kilometre mark of the London Marathon. She managed to catch up with the lead group, but the damage was done. In the end, she finished 13th with a time of 2:36:55. Earlier this year she stood on the lowest step of the podium at the Tokyo Marathon, where her time of 2:24:26 placed her third in the event. De 27-jarige Keniaanse heeft razendsnelle tijden staan op 10 km (30.37) en halve marathon (1.06.18). Vorig jaar maakte Chepkirui haar debuut op de marathon van Londen. Ze begon de wedstrijd veelbelovend door goed mee te lopen met de kopgroep, maar kreeg na 23 km kramp in haar hamstring. Na een pijnlijke tweede helft wist ze wel de finish te halen in 2.35.54. Chepkirui is positief over haar voorbereiding. "Ik ga voor het eerst de TCS Amsterdam Marathon lopen. Mijn vorm is nu goed en verwacht een persoonlijk record te lopen. Een tijd onder de 2.25 is mogelijk, misschien zelfs 2.21", vertelt de ambitieuze atlete. Andere prestaties De Keniaanse atlete liep naar een overwinning en een snelle tijd tijdens de Praag Halve Marathon. Zij finishte in een tijd van 1.06.19. Ook won ze de Berlijn Grand 10 in een tijd van 30.37. Naast deze snelle tijden wist zij ook twee keer Afrikaans kampioen te worden bij het veldlopen (2012) en de 10.000 meter (2014). Winner Dam tot Damloop Last month, Joyce Chepkirui was victorious at the Dam tot Damloop. The 27-year-old Kenyan has extremely fast 10 km (30.37) and half marathon (1.06.18) times. Chepkirui made her debut at the London marathon last year. She started the race with great promise by keeping up with the leading group but after 23 km suffered from cramp in her hamstring.
