2 De Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie van België voor Wetenschappen en Kunsten coördineert jaarlijks tot 25 wetenschappelijke bijeenkomsten, ook contactfora genoemd, in de domeinen van de natuurwetenschappen (inclusief de biomedische wetenschappen), menswetenschappen en kunsten. De contactfora hebben tot doel Vlaamse wetenschappers of kunstenaars te verenigen rond specifieke thema s. De handelingen van deze contactfora vormen een aparte publicatiereeks van de Academie. Contactforum New techniques in Hopf algebras and graded ring theory (19-23 september 2006, S. Caenepeel) The first example of a Hopf algebra appeared in Heinz Hopf's work in algebraic topology in Hopf algebras have their applications in almost every field in modern mathematics : number theory, algebraic geometry, Lie theory, combinatorics, Brauer group theory, category theory, representation theory, mathematical physics... The systematic study of Hopf algebras as an algebraic structure started in the 1960's. In the 1980 s, Hopf algebras appeared in statistical mechanics, under the name quantum groups, leading to a renewed research interest in this algebraic structure. In this volume, we present a series of survey articles on recent research topics in Hopf algebras and related subjects.

8 PREFACE The congress New techniques in Hopf algebras and graded ring theory took place in Brussels from September 19 until September 23, The first three days consisted of a contactforum at the Royal Academy, and the two remaining days were held at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. There were 64 participants coming from 20 countries. The conference was supported by the Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie van België voor Wetenschappen en Kunsten (KVAB), the Fonds voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek Vlaanderen (FWO), the Brussels Capital Region, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the Universiteit Antwerpen. One of the aims of the congress was to present the results of the Flemish-Romanian bilateral project BWS04/04 New techniques in Hopf algebras and graded ring theory ( ). In this volume of the Proceedings of contactfora series, we present a number of survey articles on recent developments in Hopf algebra theory and related subjects. Topics that are covered include corings, Hopf algebroids, monoidal categories, Hochschild cohomology, Hopf-Galois extensions, (strongly) graded rings, multiplier Hopf algebras, Hom-Lie algebras, localization in coalgebras, parabosonic algebra and factorization structures. We thank all participants to the meeting, the contributors to this volume; our thanks also go to the FWO and the KVAB for enabling us to organize this conference.
