Ruzie om een stuk speelgoed, een spelletje dat uit de hand loopt, een jaloerse reactie Het hoort bij het opgroeien. Kinderen moeten leren omgaan met elkaar. De wereld draait niet alleen om hen, ze kunnen dus niet altijd hun zin krijgen. Kinderen moeten met elkaar leren rekening te houden. Maar het is ook belangrijk dat ze voor zichzelf kunnen opkomen. Pas vanaf acht jaar zijn ze in staat om zich in te leven in de gevoelens van een ander. Jonge kinderen denken vooral aan zichzelf en houden weinig rekening met een ander. Kinderen kunnen veel leren uit ruzies. Toch kunnen ze de sfeer in huis verpesten. Vooral als kinderen vaak ruzie maken, is het nodig om in te grijpen. Als kinderen ruzie maken, hoef je niet meteen in te grijpen. Zo kunnen ze leren om zelf te stoppen met ruzie maken. Als de ruzie toch niet stopt of uit de hand dreigt te lopen, kom je wél tussenbeide. Children fight. It happens in every household. In that way, they can learn how to stop fighting on their own. If the fight doesn t seem to end or is getting out of hand, then certainly do intervene.

Zeg duidelijk dat het niemand pijn mag doen en dat het een straf krijgt. Haal je kind even weg van de activiteit. Zet het bijvoorbeeld op een stoel. Als je kind niet blijft zitten, zet je kind dan even apart in een oninteressante maar veilige ruimte, bijvoorbeeld de gang. Als je kind gekalmeerd is, kan het weer meespelen. Wordt je kind opnieuw agressief, herhaal dan de vorige stappen. Misschien moet je dit enkele keren herhalen voor je kind snapt dat het niemand pijn mag doen.
