Regeling extra hertentamens Het opleidingsmanagement van de BSc-opleiding Civiele Techniek maakt zich zorgen over de doorstroom van de studenten in de BSc. Om deze doorstroom te bevorderen is een nieuwe regeling opgesteld die tot doel heeft extra herkansingen te bieden aan studenten bij vakken die slecht scoren. De regeling is opgenomen in het OER 2008/2009 en luidt als volgt: Wanneer voor een tentamen de helft of meer van de deelnemende studenten een onvoldoende als eindcijfer ( 5) heeft behaald, wordt aan het eind van de aansluitende onderwijsperiode een extra herkansing van het tentamen aangeboden aan die studenten die bij dit tentamen een eindcijfer 4 of 5 hebben behaald, tenzij de reguliere herkansing reeds in die periode is geroosterd. Deze regeling is alleen van toepassing op tentamens direct aansluitend aan het onderwijs en geldt niet voor de tentamens van de eerste onderwijsperiode van de propedeuse. In de praktijk heeft deze regeling alleen gevolgen voor de vakken van de tweede en derde onderwijsperiode. De vakken van het eerste en vierde onderwijsperiode worden al herkanst in de aansluitende onderwijsperiode. De procedure is nu als volgt: Je hebt een regulier BSc tentamen gedaan Het tentamen is door minder dan 50% van de studenten behaald CT-nieuws nummer 12, jaargang 42, 20 november 2008

2 CT-Nieuws Jaargang 42 nummer november 2008 Jij hebt voor dit tentamen een 4 of een 5 gehaald Je ontvangt een mail waarin de datum en plaats van het extra hertentamen staat. Je hoeft je dus niet op te geven via TAS. De mail wordt verstuurd naar je TU-mailadres! Bij de mail ontvang je een examenbewijs Het examenbewijs print je uit en neem je mee daar het tentamen Je levert het examenbewijs in samen met je tentamen. Zonder examenbewijs wordt je tentamen niet nagekeken. De regeling geldt alleen voor de vakken van Civiele Techniek en de wiskunde vakken van de BSc. On Thursday 27th of November 2008 the monthly Applied Mechanics Seminar will host Professor Sarah Billington (Stanford University, USA). Her presentation is entitled Mechanical Performance of Bio-based Fiber-reinforced Polymeric Composites The seminar will be held at 16:00 in the theatre C of the Civil Engineering building. Bio-based composite materials are a potential low-environmental impact replacement for petroleumbased plastic materials, wood, and engineered wood in construction. At Stanford, a team of structural, environmental and chemical engineers are investigating bio-based composites made from microbial polymers and plant fibers. These composites can biodegrade in an anaerobic environment to produce either energy or a feedstock to grow more biopolymer and make new composites. It serves as a forum for presenting results of up-to-date research in hydrology and water resources management. The series is a continuation of the Recent Advances in Subsurface Hydrology series that was organised by the former Section of Hydrology and Ecology from 1997 to The following talks are scheduled for the forty fourth colloquium in the series. 6 WATER RESOURCES SECTION FACULTY OF CIVIL ENGINEERING AND GEOSCIENCES DELFT UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY ABSTRACT: Statements of Highschool Students and other Laymen about the possible Tsunami of La Palma by Jan Nieuwenhuis My research about the possible La Palma tsunami has raised a lot of mail and . Most of it has been thrown away by the Department of External Communications of the Delft University of Technology, but some funny items were passed through. From this collection I shall give an anthology. Keverling Buisman and the Start of Soil Mechanics by Arnold Verruijt [author of the chapter "Keverling Buisman: Grondmechanica" in "Delfts Goud", 2002, Beta Imaginations, ISBN-13: ] Albert Sybrandus Keverling Buisman ( ) can be considered as the founder of Soil Mechanics discipline in The Netherlands. From 1919 he was a professor in Delft, and in 1939 he departed for Bandung, formerly Netherlands East Indies, for a temporary stay, in exchange with Vreedenburgh. In 1944 he deceased in an internment camp. The most important contributions of Keverling Buisman have been: - The development of laboratory tests for the determination of mechanical properties of the soil (using simple equipment as Meccano-parts and bicycle wheels). - The formulation of simple formulas for the calculation of the deformation of compressible soil, including the notion of creep. - The writing of the first textbook in Dutch about Soil Mechanics. It is remarkable that his original (logarithmic) formula for creep at first has been reviled internationally, but currently has been accepted. After the lectures we shall visit the desk at which "Grondmechanica" by A.S. Keverling Buisman (the first textbook in Dutch about soil mechanics) was written. A grandson of Keverling Buisman, Dr. A.K. Keverling Buisman, shall reveal a small memorial plate to remember this fact.
