Message from our Chairman Greetings, all! September is behind us. It is a very busy month for this Branch, with so many Remembrances and Parades during the Airborne Week. There are all the usual events, the Parade across the John Frost Bridge, which is led by the Pipes and Drums Massed Band under the leadership of the The Royal British Legion Pipes and Drums Band, the Netherlands. I was honoured to be there this year, and the sound of the Pipes and Drums just stirs the blood. The Wandeltocht in Oosterbeek, and the Parachute Jumps at Ginkelse Heide, Wolfheze and Renkum Heath. At those events your Branch s Information team were out and about, taking the Information Stall with them, all now in a trailer with the Legion Logo on it. And what a couple of days they were! The team raised a staggering 5,000 to be used for helping former, and serving Veterans and their families. What a result! To all those who stood at the stall, in all weathers, I salute you all, and thank you unreservedly for giving up your time for such an important cause. Please stand up and accept the plaudits you so richly deserve. The final Remembrance was held, as always, in Oosterbeek. There your Branch Standard Bearer, Yoeri Kniest, was on Parade with Standard Bearers from District Germany, where again he represented this Branch with honour. He is a young man, but he does his duty with the gravitas that is called for. I hope that we get to keep this small treasure for a long time in the future. Unfortunately, I had to miss that Remembrance as I was in Dronten for the inaugural Remembrance of the Cross of Nails held by the Flightpath of Freedom and Reconciliation Association. The cross was made of three nails that had been used in the building of the original Coventry Cathedral, which was destroyed by Luftwaffe bombs. Also there was the Eindhoven Fakkeltocht. Again we had the pleasure of District Germany, and for the first time the Branch Standard, Chairman, and Members from Antwerp Branch. I am most grateful to our guests from abroad who gave up their time to join us at such an important time. Bericht van onze Voorzitter Gegroet, allemaal! September ligt achter ons. Het is altijd een hele drukke maand voor deze Branch, met zoveel herdenkingen en parades tijdens de Airborne week. Er zijn de gebruikelijke evenementen, de Parade over de John Frost Bridge, die geleid wordt door de Pipes and Drums Massed Band onder leiding van The Royal British Legion Pipes and Drums Band, Nederland. Ik was vereerd om er dit jaar bij te zijn, en het geluid van de Pipes and Drums doet je bloed sneller stromen, dan de Wandeltocht in Oosterbeek, en het Parachute Springen bij Ginkelse Heide, Wolfheze en Renkum Heath. Bij die gebeurtenissen nam uw Branch Information Team de Informatie Kraam mee, alles nu in een aanhanger met het Legion Logo erop. En wat een paar speciale dagen waren het! Het team heeft een verrassende 5.000 opgehaald om voormalige, en nog dienende veteranen en hun gezinnen te helpen. Wat een resultaat! Aan iedereen die bij de kraam betrokken was, in alle weersomstandigheden: ik groet u allen, en dank u onvoorwaardelijk voor het geven van uw tijd voor zo n belangrijke zaak. Sta alstublieft op en ontvang het applaus dat u zo rijkelijk verdient. De laatste herdenking werd, zoals altijd, in Oosterbeek gehouden. Daar was uw Branch Standard Bearer, Yoeri Kniest, op parade met vaandeldragers uit District Duitsland, waar hij onze branch opnieuw met eer vertegenwoordigde. Hij is een jonge man, maar hij doet zijn plicht met de serieuze betrokkenheid die bij deze functie hoort. Ik hoop dat we deze kostbare schat nog lange tijd in de toekomst mogen behouden. Helaas moest ik die herdenking missen, omdat ik in Dronten was voor de inauguratie van het Kruis der Nagels die door de Flightpath of Freedom and Reconciliation Association werd georganiseerd. Het kruis is gemaakt van drie nagels die gebruikt werden bij de bouw van de oorspronkelijke Coventry-kathedraal, die door de Luftwaffe-bommen werd vernietigd. Ook was er de Eindhovense Fakkeltocht. Opnieuw hadden we het genoegen om District Duitsland en voor het eerst de Branch Standard, Chairman en Members van de Antwerpse Branch erbij te hebben. Ik ben erg dankbaar dat onze gasten uit het buitenland hun tijd wilden geven om bij zo'n belangrijke gebeurtenis bij ons te zijn.
But now we have to start looking forward. Coming up are two important dates for your Agenda. There is the National Remembrance, which will be held in Oosterbeek as usual, on the 12th of November 2017. All members are cordially invited to take part in the greatest day of the Legion s year. It is also, just as important, Poppy Time. There are many addresses around the country, to which more addresses are being added, where you can buy your Poppy. The full list can be found in this newsletter and will also be posted on our website and Facebook page shortly. Second is the Branch s A.G.M. on saturday 18th of November. This is your time, and your meeting. This is when you can get to send points for the Agenda, to Mr.Eric Geurts, and ask questions of your Branch Officers and Committee Members. You have received your latest Newsletter, obviously, and part of this is a form which offers Members who are interested to stand for a Committee Office. The rules are simple: to be nominated, a Legion and Branch Member who has paid their Membership fee, fills in their name, then has to be nominated and seconded by Legion and Branch Members who have paid their Membership fees, and send it to our temporarily Mrs. Margreet Shorthouse-Kuiper (Secretary@trblhollandbranch.nl). Nomination forms to be sent in before the end of October, please. On December 17, 2017, RAFA Amsterdam Branch will be holding its Christmas Lunch at the Mercure Amsterdam Airport Hotel. The address of the hotel: Oude Haagseweg 20, Amsterdam. It starts at 13.00 with a drink, meal to commence at 13.30. Price is 35 Euros, payable o n l y to the RAFA Branch account NL81INGB0002477300 before December 15. Parking is 4 Euros and is payable at the reception. Any members who wish to take part, please contact Mrs. Ellen van Gilst on either 029 9621926 or e.gilst@ziggo.nl Maar nu moeten we vooruit kijken. Er komen twee belangrijke data voor uw agenda. Als eerste is er de Nationale Dodenherdenking die op 12 november 2017 in Oosterbeek plaats vindt. Alle leden worden vriendelijk uitgenodigd om deel te nemen aan de belangrijkste dag van het jaar van de Legion. Het is ook, net zo belangrijk, Poppy Time! Er zijn veel adressen over het land verspreid (waaraan meer adressen toegevoegd worden), waar u uw Poppy kunt kopen. De volledige lijst staat in deze nieuwsbrief en wordt binnenkort ook op onze website en Facebook-pagina geplaatst. Als tweede is er de Algemene Leden Vergadering van onze Branch op zaterdag 18 november 2017. Dit is uw moment en uw vergadering. Dit is wanneer u agendapunten aan kunt leveren voor de agenda, bij de heer Eric Geurts, en vragen kunt stellen aan uw Branch Officieren en Commissieleden. U heeft uiteraard uw laatste Nieuwsbrief ontvangen, en een deel hiervan bestaat uit een formulier dat leden de gelegenheid biedt zich op te geven als Committee Member/bestuurslid. It will take place on Sunday 12th of November 2017 and will start at 11.30 hours, with the silence co-inciding with the service held at Whitehall, London. We will be joined by The Pipes and Drums of The Royal British Legion The Netherlands and the Koninklijke Harmonie Oosterbeek. All are welcome to attend. Van Limburg Stirumweg 28, 6861 WL Oosterbeek Annual General Meeting Saturday 18 th november The seventh Royal British Legion Holland Branch Annual General Meeting will be held on Saturday 18 th November 2017 at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Van Hogendorpstraat 26, 3581KE Utrecht. The meeting room will be open from 12:30h; the meeting will commence at 13:00h sharp. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided. The venue is easily to reach by public transport; take a train to Utrecht Central station, take bus (number 8) to the Burgemeester Reigerstraat stop in front of Albert Heijn. Cross the road and after 30 meters turn into the next street on the left (Van Hogendorpstraat). Keep right and you will see the church. The venue is also easy to reach by car with paid parking in the area (pay by Pin or Credit card). Our own trailer Thanks to a local sponsor our Branch is now the proud owner of our own trailer which we are using for the transport of our Information Stall. We are more than grateful to a local International Arnhem Company for sponsoring the purchase and upgrade costs. The trailer although cheapish to buy required some tlc. A massive thank you: Ken Lightwood, Ray Waller, Roy Shorthouse for putting the hours you have. It's first outing was during the Airborne Wandeltocht and we received many complimentary comments. Onze eigen aanhanger Dankzij een lokale sponsor is onze Branch nu de trotse eigenaar van een aanhanger die we inzetten voor het vervoer van onze Informatiestand. We zijn een lokaal Internationaal Arnhem bedrijf uitermate dankbaar voor het sponsoren van de aanschaf en opknapkosten van deze aanhanger. De aanhanger was betaalbaar, maar moest wel opgeknapt worden. Dank aan Ken Lightwood, Ray Waller en Roy Shorthouse voor alle tijd die jullie hierin hebben gestoken. Onze aanhanger is voor het eerst gebruikt tijdens de Airborne Wandeltocht. We kregen veel complimenten.
Message from Anthony Lawrenson In Baexem a small village in the District of Leudal on the 16 th September 2017, a ceremony was taking place to honour Fusilier Donald Barrett of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, he along with his comrades were on mine clearing duties close to the village when he sadly died. The Parish Priest Father Marcus Vancan organised a moving ceremony and procession which involved Veterans from the UK being invited over to take part along with veterans from the Dutch military, the townspeople and marching bands. The whole village turned out with British flags and memorabilia everywhere along the route. At the unveiling,tributes were made by the town s Mayor Arno Verhoeven Father Vancan and the serving military commander of the area, the commemorative Plaque was unveiled by two of the UK veterans, the children of the village gave the veterans Sunflowers to honour their visit. On behalf of the Royal British Legion my wife and I attended and laid a wreath in his honour. Bericht van Anthony Lawrenson In Baexem, een klein dorp in het district Leudal vond op 16 september een herdenking plaats om fusilier Donald Barrett van de Royal Welsh Fusiliers te eren. Donald was samen met zijn kameraden nabij dit dorp mijnen aan het opruimen toen hij helaas overleed. De lokale priester, vader Marcus Vancan organiseerde een emotionele herdenking waarbij veteranen van Groot Brittanië uitgenodigd waren om samen met Nederlandse militairen, lokale bewoners en marching bands aan de herdenking en processie deel te nemen. Dankzij bewoners van Baexem hingen overal langs de route Britse vlaggen en lagen overal memorabilia. Bij de onthulling van de plaquette werd door de burgemeester Arno Verhoeven, vader Vancan en de commandant van het gebied eert betuigd. Ook werd door twee van de Britse veteranen de plaquette onthuld en gaven kinderen uit het dorp zonnebloemen aan de veteranen. Dit om hun komst te eren. Namens de Royal British Legion waren mijn vrouw en ik bij deze herdenking aanwezig en legden wij een krans ter nagedachtenis.
