FOR DUTCH STUDENTS! ENGLISH VERSION NEXT PAGE Tentamen Analyse 6 januari 203, duur 3 uur. FOR NON-DUTCH STUDENTS! Eam Mathematical Analysis 2 January 6, 203, duration 3 hours. For every eercise you have to provide the full proof, calculation and/or arguments. If you can t solve an item of some eercise, continue with the net items. It is allowed to use the information that you have obtained before. The (graphical) calculator can be used during the eam. However, the graphical calculator can only be used for numerical calculations. It CANNOT be used to provide arguments for the solutions obtained. Eercise a) Let f be a function and let c IR be such that an a < c eists with (a,c) D f or a b > c eists with (c,b) D f and let l IR. Provide the definition of lim f() l. c b) Show, by using the definition, that eists. lim 0 + Eercise 2 Show, by using the Mean Value Theorem, that for every > 0 we have a) + < ln( + ) ln() < ; b) + < + 2. Here you can use the fact that the functions f() ln() and g() are differentiable on (0, ). Turn this page for the other eercises. 2 Grading: Grading eam: eercise : 7 pts; eercise 2: 6 pts; eercise 3: 7 pts; eercise 4: 6 pts; eercise 5: 7 pts; eercise 6: 7 pts. The grade for the eam is the sum of the points scored, divided by 4. The midterm counts for 20 % in the determination of the final grade for Mathematical Analysis.
Eercise 3 Consider the function f on IR, defined by for every IR. f() 5 + 3 + a) Determine the first order Taylor polynomial of f in 0 and in. b) Show that f is invertible. c) Show that the inverse f is differentiable and determine (f ) (3). Eercise 4 Determine, if possible, the following limits: a) lim ( 2 + 4 ) ; b) lim 203 202. Also here do not forget your arguments. Eercise 5 a) Check whether the sequence is summable or not. ( ) n + n 3 + b) Show that the following statement is true: if (a n ) summable sequence, then the sequence is a nonnegative, ( ) an n is summable as well. (Hint: for numbers a 0, b 0 we have that a b 2 (a2 + b 2 ).) Eercise 6 Consider the power series 2 n n. a) Determine the radius of convergence R of this power series. b) Determine the value of the infinite sum 2 n n for every ( R,R). c) Check whether the infinite sum 2 n n eists for R.
Solutions Eam Mathematical Analysis, January 6, 203 Eercise a) For every ε > 0 there eists a δ > 0 such that for every D f with 0 < c < δ we have f() l < ε. b) Let ε > 0. Choose δ 2ε. Let (, )\{0} be such that 0 < 0 < δ. Then we have + 2 ( + )( + + ) ( + + ) 2 ( + ) ( + + ) 2 ( + + ) 2 + + 2 2 ( + + ) 2( + + ) + 2( + + ) ( + )( + + ) 2( + + ) 2 ( + ) 2( + + ) 2 2( + + ) 2 2 < δ 2 ε. So lim 0 + 2. Eercise 2 Let > 0. a) The function f(t) ln(t) is continuous on [, + ] and differentiable on (, + ). According to the Mean Value Theorem there is a ξ (, + ) such that ln(+) ln() f(+) f() f (ξ) ((+) ) f (ξ) ξ. Now + < ξ < which finishes the proof. b) The function f(t) t + is continuous on [0,] and differentiable on (0,). According to the Mean Value Theorem there is a ξ (0,) such that + f() f(0) f (ξ) ( 0) f (ξ) + < + 2. 2 ξ+ < 2, hence
Eercise 3 Note that f () 5 4 + 3 2 + for every IR. a) The first order Taylor polynomial p of f in 0 is given by p() f(0) + f (0)( 0) 0+ ( 0) for every IR. The first order Taylor polynomial q of f in is given by q() f()+f ()( ) 3+9 ( ) 9 6 for every IR. b) f () > 0 for every IR, so f is strictly increasing on IR and hence invertible on IR. c) Since f () > 0 for every IR we have, according to the Inverse Function Theorem, that f is differentiable and that (f ) (y) /f (f (y)) for every y. In particular we get (f ) (3) /f (f (3)) /f () /9. Eercise 4 a) For every > 0 we have 2 + 4 ( 2 + 4 )( 2 + 4 + ) 2 + 4 + (2 + 4) 2 2 + 4 + 4 2 + 4 + 4 + 4 +. Now with the arithmetic rules for limits we obtain lim ( 2 + 4 ) 2. lim 4 + 4 + 4 + 0 + b) Define, say on interval I (0, ), the functions f and g by f() 203 and g() 202 for every I. Note that f and g are differentiable on I and that f () 203 202 and g () 202 20 for every I. Since g () 0 for every I and f() g() 0 we have, according to l Hôpital s rule (first version): lim 203 0 202 lim 0 f() g() f () g () 203 202. Eercise 5 a) For every n IN we have n+ n 3 + n+ n+ n 3 +n 2 n 2 (n+) n 2 n. Since ( n ) is not summable we can conclude, according to the Comparison Test, that ( n+ n 3 + ) is not summable as well. b) Let (a n ) be a nonnegative, summable sequence. For every n IN we an have that n a n n 2 (( a n ) 2 + ( n )2 ) 2 (a n + ). Since (a n 2 n ) and ( ) n 2 are summable, the sequence ( 2 (a n + )) n 2 is summable as
an well. According to the Comparison Test the sequence ( summable. n ) is also Eercise 6 a) R b) For every ( 2,2) we have lim n lim a n a n+ 2 n n 2 n+ lim n lim n 2 2. 2 nn 2 2 n+ 2 n ( 2 )n ( 2 )n 2 2 2. c) For 2 the infinite sum becomes, which does not eist.
