Free moorings in scenic surroundings Friesland offers you more than 3,500 Marrekrite mooring sites in the most unique spots that put you right in the middle of natural beauty. Perfect places to tie up for three days, at no cost, and enjoy Friesland s natural wonrs. On behalf of the Province of Friesland and 22 Frisian municipalities, De Marrekrite manages and maintains these free moorings, ensures the removal of recreational waste at many locations, maintains buoys and beacons for recreational navigation, and manages other recreational facilities on Frisian waters and along these shores. As part of our efforts, we are always looking for a good balance between using Friesland s waters and surrounding land for recreation, and conserving Friesland s scenic landscape and natural habitat, says Jack van n Berg, Director of De Marrekrite. The majority of the funding for constructing and maintaining quays and other facilities comes from contributions ma by the affiliated municipalities and the province. An equally valuable, if smaller, contribution is ma by the boating enthusiasts who buy a Marrekrite pennant. By purchasing a pennant, the buyer makes a direct contribution to maintaining these free mooring sites in their natural surroundings in Friesland, says Jack van n Berg.

Sustainability Sustainability plays an important role in managing and maintaining our facilities. This is especially apparent in the choice of building materials. For new constructions and replacing mooring facilities we use recycled plastic and natural shore protection. We also use sheep for natural landscape maintenance. Sheep keep grass and shrubs in almost inaccessible locations short! De Marrekrite is working on social sustainability by employing people in sheltered employment services and reintegration schemes for such activities as cleaning the quays. Safety Especially for your safety, we have ma arrangements with the emergency service so that the 1-1-2 emergency service in Friesland is acquainted with all the numbers of De Marrekrite s facilities. If you are confronted with an emergency situation and call 1-1-2, be sure to report that you are in Friesland and give the number (see photo) of your mooring. This simple system ensures that you are always accessible to the emergency services of the Province of Friesland. This means you can feel secure even when mooring your boat out in scenic surroundings!
De Marrekrite is going ashore! Our traditional arena has always been on the water and where it meets the land. Now, however, we are going ashore! Our new task is managing and maintaining the route networks (markers) in the Province of Friesland. Also includ in our new duties are making changes in and adding to the system of path hubs. The maintenance of the cycling and hiking paths will still be done by the province or the municipality. We will begin our management and maintenance of the cycling path hubs and the routes signed by the Dutch National Cycling Platform in the southeast of Friesland in 2012. In following years, other regions in the province will also be turning over this management and maintenance to De Marrekrite. In the near future, we will be doing the same for hiking networks. We will be checking the system of cycling path hubs a few times each year. If you happen to see that a marker at one of these hubs or routes is gone or damaged, you can report this at De Marrekrite s website.
Volunteers Volunteers are very important for De Marrekrite. You are most likely to encounter our volunteers The Friends of De Marrekrite as pennant sellers and/or tâfersjochhâlr (surveillants). It was these Friends of De Marrekrite who initiated the selling of pennants years ago. The first pennants were sold in 1987 to generate additional financial support for De Marrekrite. Currently, these volunteers are still very much involved in the sale and distribution of the pennants, but the administrative handling takes place at De Marrekrite s office. The surveillants are our eyes and ears on the water! After all, De Marrekrite has more than 285 mooring facilities distributed throughout Friesland that provi mooring space for around 3500 boats. Our volunteer surveillants travel by boat within their own area where they inspect mooring facilities and report damage. Besis this visible group of volunteers, there are also many volunteers working behind the scenes to support us by organising volunteer activities, folding/sending the newsletter, sponsoring, etc.
Support De Marrekrite! We could really use your support! Managing and maintaining our natural moorings and other facilities costs a lot of money. You can support us by buying a Marrekrite pennant or by becoming a donor! By doing so, you are making a direct contribution to maintaining these natural moorings in Friesland. Your contribution goes directly to maintaining and managing these mooring facilities. Every December, our website announces how much money the sale of pennants has generated that year. You can buy the pennant at various points of sale in Friesland. To get a list of all these points of sale, you can go to the website (www.marrekrite.nl). Or you might want to orr your pennant from the website itself. A pennant costs 13.00 (2012). You can also become an official donor.
