FOR DUTCH STUDENTS!
Bereken P(A).
FOR NON-DUTCH STUDENTS! Midterm Introduction Probability Theory 2 February 8, 2010 For every exercise you have to provide the full proof, calculation and/or arguments. If you can t solve an item of some exercise, continue with the next items. It is allowed to use the information that you have obtained before. The graphical calculator can be used during the midterm. However, the graphical calculator can be used only for numerical calculations. It can NOT be used to provide arguments for the solutions obtained. Exercise 1 Let A and B be any events with > 0. a) Provide the definition of P(A B). b) Show, by using the definition, that P(A B) 1 P(A B). Indicate clearly in the proof which events you use and which properties of the function P you use! Exercise 2 At Trinity College students have administration numbers consisting of six digits, where each digit is a 1, 2 or 3. Every possible administration number is used at most once (Trinity College is an exclusive university with a restricted number of students) and all possible administration numbers are equally likely to be used. We arbitrarily select one student from Trinity College. a) Determine the probability that the sum of the digits of the administration number of this student is at least 15. b) Determine the probability that the administration number of this student contains precisely three times the digit 2. c) Determine the probability that the first digit of the administration number of this student equals 1. Determine this probability once again, if moreover it is given that the administration number contains precisely three times the digit 2. Turn this page for Exercises 3 and 4. 2 The midterm counts for 20 % in the calculation of the final grade for Introduction Probability Theory. Grading midterm: exercise 1: 2 pts; exercise 2: 3 pts; exercise 3: 2 pts; exercise 4: 3 pts.
Exercise 3 For three independent events A, B and C of a certain experiment it is given that P(A B C) 0.9, 0.2 and P(C) 0.3. Determine P(A). Exercise 4 A discrete random variable X only takes the values 1, 2, 3, 4,... (so the natural numbers). Its probability density function (pdf) f is given by f(x) c( 2 5 )x for every x IN, where c is a real constant. a) Determine c. b) Determine the probability that X takes an even value.
Solutions midterm Inleiding Kansrekening, February 8, 2010 Exercise 1 a) P(A B) P(A B). b) Note that B (A B) (A B) and that A B and A B are disjoint. So, P(A B) + P(A B). From this it follows that P(A B) P(A B). Hence P(A B) P(A B) P(A B) 1 P(A B) 1 P(A B). Exercise 2 First note that there are 3 6 possible administration numbers. a) Let A be the event the sum of the digits is at least 15. The event A is the union of the following collection of pairwise disjoint events: 333333, 333332, 333331, 333322, 333321, 333222. Here, for example, 333321 denotes the event of selecting a student of whom the administration number has four 3 s, one 2 and one 1 in some order. P(A) P( 333333 ) + P( 333332 ) + P( 333331 ) +P( 333322 ) + P( 333321 ) + P( 333222 ) ( 6 ) ( 6 + 6 )( 1 ) ( 5 1 + 6 )( 1 ) ( 5 1 + 6 )( 2 ) ( 4 2 + 6 )( 2 )( 1 ) ( 4 1 1 + 6 )( 3 3 3) 1 + 6 + 6 + 15 + 30 + 20 78 26 243. b) Let B be the event precisely three 2 s. The number of corresponding administration numbers is counted in the following way. First determine the number of ways of selecting the three positions where a 2 occurs. This number equals ( 6 3). Now determine (for any of these choices) for each position that has not been selected whether a 1 or 3 occurs. This can be done in 2 3 ways. So, (6 3) 2 3 160. c) Let C be the event first digit is 1. Of course C contains 3 5 administration numbers so P(C) 35 3 1 6 3. Now C B consists of all administration numbers starting with a 1 and containing precisely three 2 s, so ( 5 3) 2 2 adminstration numbers. Hence P(C B) P(C B) ( 5 3) 2 2 160 40 160
1 4. Exercise 3 Since the three events are independent we have P(A B) P(A) 0.2P(A), P(A C) P(A)P(C) 0.3P(A), P(B C) P(C) 0.06 and P(A B C) P(A)P(C) 0.06P(A). According to the rule of inclusion and exclusion we have 0.9 P(A B C) P(A) + + P(C) P(A B) P(A C) P(B C) +P(A B C) P(A) + 0.2 + 0.3 0.2P(A) 0.3P(A) 0.06 + 0.06P(A) 0.56P(A) + 0.44. Hence P(A) 0.46 0.56 23 28. Exercise 4 a) so c 3 2. b) 1 f(x) x1 c( 2 5 )x x1 c 2 5 ( 2 5 )x 1 x1 c 2 5 1 1 2 5 2 3 c, f(2) + f(4) + f(6) + f(8) + f(10) + 3 2 ((2 5 )2 + ( 2 5 )4 + ( 2 5 )6 + ) 3 4 2 25 (1 + 4 25 + ( 4 25 )2 + ) 3 4 1 2 25 1 4 25 3 4 2 21 2 7.
