12 Terminfo project TermInfo is an HL7 Project developing standard guidance on use of Terminologies within Information models As an HL7 Project the Information model focus is on HL7 Version 3 models including: HL7 Reference Information Model (RIM); and Constrained Information Models (e.g. DIMs, RMIMs etc.) Particularly the Clinical Statement pattern TermInfo Work Package 2 is the most active part of the project The Terminology focus of WP2 is SNOMED CT David Markwell, The Clinical Info ormation Consultancy Ltd 12

13 Terminfo: Using SNOMED CT The purpose of this guide is to ensure that HL7 Version 3 standards achieve their stated goal of semantic interoperability when used to communicate clinical information that is represented using concepts from SNOMED Clinical Terms (SNOMED CT). 13

14 Vocabulary Modern health care communications and data storage makes heavy use of encoded information. In HL7, this is referred to as vocabulary. The HL7 standards define several different type of objects that implement various characteristics of vocabulary. Whereas other elements of the HL7 standards are primarily concerned with structure, vocabulary deals with content. 14
