1 United MileagePlus Introduces Gift Card Exchange Program CHICAGO, Feb. 14, 2012 United Continental Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: UAL), yesterday launched the MileagePlus Gift Card Exchange, a first-of-its-kind program that enables MileagePlus members to convert the remaining value of unused or partially used retail gift cards into award miles. MileagePlus members also may now use gift cards from more than 60 major retailers to purchase award miles electronically online. After logging into their MileagePlus accounts, customers select the retailer and enter their gift card information. Once MileagePlus verifies the transaction, United converts the balance on the gift card to award miles and deposits the miles into the members accounts. The MileagePlus Gift Card Exchange program offers members another convenient way to earn award miles, said Jeff Foland, president of Mileage Plus Holdings, LLC. We are pleased to offer customers new and innovative ways to engage with the world s leading loyalty program. In January, United launched

6 Whisky? Made in Taiwan? Kom nou! Welkom op het International Malt Whisky Festival Gent. Dit is al de negende editie. We proberen elk jaar méér en méér whisky s aan te bieden en ook dit jaar is ons dat weer gelukt. Kijk maar even rustig rond en u komt op ontdekkingen uit. Omdat het iets te krap werd op onze vaste stek (de tweede verdieping van het ICCGhent) daalden we af naar het gelijkvloers waar we meer oppervlakte ter beschikking krijgen. We hopen dat dit ook voor u een goede oplossing is, zo krijgt u meer ruimte en meer kansen om rustig over whisky s te babbelen met vrienden en vreemden, die dezelfde liefde koesteren. Wij zijn bijzonder trots om als eersten in Europa de veel

7 besproken en geroemde Taiwanese whisky KAVALAN te kunnen aanbieden. Omwille van heel wat wettelijke kronkels mag de whisky hier nog niet worden verkocht, maar ven proeven kan wel. Profiteer ervan. Het is een verrassend goede whisky. Op 23 januari 2012 begon in Taiwan het Jaar van de Draak. Een jaar voor levendige mensen, die trots zijn, vol enthousiasme en met zin in het leven. Het begon allemaal in januari De krant The Times wilde de jonge Engelse whisky St. George s even in de picture zetten en vroeg een aantal deskundigen om aan een blind tasting deel te nemen. De andere whisky s in de tasting mochten echt ook niet veel ouder zijn (en The Times kennende waarschijnlijk liefst ook niet té goed). Het werden een drietal jonge Schotse blends en een vijfjarige Schotse malt van (als we de roddels

8 mogen geloven) Bruichladdich. Daarnaast stond nog een tweejarige malt (nog niet echt whisky dus): Kavalan. Charles MacLean had het staal uit Taiwan meegebracht. De uitslag was bijzonder verrassend en ging als een vuurtje de wereld rond: Kavalan kreeg negentig procent, St. George s werd vierde met net vijftig procent en de Schotse malt haalde bijna vijftien procent. In de whiskywereld wilde iedereen plots weten: Heb jij die Kavalan al eens geproefd? King Car Food Company De legendarische weg van Taipei naar het oosten van Taiwan loopt door Taroko National Park en is een van de spectaculairste die je in het verre oosten kunt nemen. Maar omdat we naar Yilan moeten iets meer naar het noorden kiezen we voor Highway n 5, waardoor we door de vijfde langste wegtunnel van de wereld moeten, zo n dertien kilometer lang. Maar dat spaart ons wel twee uur rijden. We zoeven onderdoor de Snowy Mountains en door de Yilan vlakte naar een kuststadje waar je helemaal geen distilleerderij verwacht. Kavalan is de naam van de whisky, maar de distilleerderij heet eigenlijk King Car Food Company. En die naam klinkt als een klok in Yilan. Mijn chauffeur weet me tot bij de deur van het bezoekerscentrum te brengen. Geen lachertje, want het terrein is een paar voetbalpleinen groot, met veel security en slagbomen. Het bezoekerscentrum lijkt van buitenaf op een Brits Museum met monumentale gevel. Dan pas dringen de

9 cijfers,die ik de dag ervoor hoorde, tot me door: King Car Company krijgt per dag zo n tweeduizend bezoekers over de vloer, in de weekends zijn er dat zes à zevenduizend. In één jaar ontvangt deze distilleerderij meer dan één miljoen bezoekers, dat is meer dan alle Schotse distilleerderijen samen. Waarom King Car? Mr. T.T. Lee, de stichter en eigenaar produceerde met de weinig centen die hij had aanvankelijk enkel insecticiden. Maar hij was (en is nog) gek op vintage cars en vond niet beter dan zijn droom als firmanaam te gebruiken. In vijftig jaar is zijn bedrijfje uitgegroeid tot een onmetelijk concern dat wereldwijd een rol speelt in de voedselsector en ver daarbuiten: van oploskoffie (Mr. Brown) tot soepen, fruitsappen, waters, orchideeën, biotechnische projecten, gezondheidszorg, onderwijsprojecten, enz. Whisky speelde hem al lang door het hoofd. Als de Japanners het kunnen, dan kunnen wij dat ook Wij willen van Taiwan één van de zes grootste whiskylanden van de wereld maken! stelt Ian Chang, productiedirecteur en master blender bij Kavalan. Hij is als we het wereldwijd bekijken piepjong, spreekt perfect Engels (liep school in Engeland) en straalt de rust van een whisky warehouse uit. Wij produceren nu negen miljoen flessen malt whisky per jaar; ons doel is dit op te drijven tot 24 miljoen. We hebben nu twee productielijnen, dat moeten er minstens vier of zelfs vijf worden. Maar we focussen niet enkel op kwantiteit! Onze eerste zorg gaat naar kwaliteit. We staan op dit gebied nu al heel ver, maar we willen dit nog verbeteren. We richten ons nu vooral op de Chinese markt, later komen Noord- Amerika en Europa aan de beurt. De plannen voor de distilleerderij lagen al een tijdje in de

10 schuif, maar de bouw begon pas in april Acht maanden later was de zaak al voor mekaar en op 11 maart 2006, precies om 8.30 uur PM, liep de eerste druppel in de spirit safe. We staken ons licht op in Japan. Want als zij whisky konden maken, dan konden wij dat ook. Ian geeft toe dat Japan model stond, maar toch riepen ze de hulp in van Dr. Jim Swan, een Brits whiskymonument om hen in de wereld van de whisky binnen te loodsen. Hij bracht een schat aan kennis in verband met distilleren en rijpen mee. De combinatie werkte perfect. No peat Omdat in Taiwan geen gerst groeit, wordt mout uit Europa aangevoerd. Vooral Schotland, Engeland, België en de Scandinavische landen zijn geliefde leveranciers. Ze hadden ook in Japan kunnen aankloppen, waar wel gerst wordt geteeld, maar de prijzen liggen daar veel te hoog. Alles gebeurt volgens onze recepturen. geeft Ian Chang nog mee, Maar zonder turf. Voor we met deze distilleerderij begonnen voerden we een consumentenonderzoek waaruit bleek dat 95 procent van de ondervraagden helemaal niet te vinden is voor gerookte whisky s. Taiwanezen willen vooral fruitige accenten. Daar spelen we nu op in. Daarom nemen we de middle cut zo klein mogelijk zodat geen spoortje van feints in de spirit te vinden is: het hart is slechts tien procent van de

11 volledige run. Dat houdt het alcoholgehalte hoog (75%) en de spirit licht. Het zachte bergwater dat wij gebruiken bezit een natuurlijke zoetheid, wat ook weer in het eindproduct te vinden is. In de warehouses liggen de vaten vijf rijen hoog, waardoor grote temperatuurverschillen ontstaan. Ian: Onze spirit gaat in de vaten aan 59,9 procent Abv, niet 63.4 zoals in Schotland. Het iets lagere gehalte zorgt voor een betere rijping. Het eindresultaat verschilt enorm naargelang de plaats van het vat. Dat laat ons toe om heel specifiek te gaan blenden. We hebben tien verschillende soorten vaten liggen. Neem daarbij het feit dat wij eigenlijk een dubbele distilleerderij zijn, met twee totaal verschillende productieketens, en dat we beschikken over een heel breed gamma van gerijpte whisky s. We gebruiken dan ook zelden karamel als kleurstof. Als we dat doen geven we dat ook duidelijk aan op de fles, want dat is de wet. Taiwanezen hebben er echter een hekel aan en maken ons opmerkingen! Twee productielijnen Productielijn 1 lijkt volledig op een klassieke Schotse distilleerderij, met vier lampvormige stills (gemaakt bij Forsyth in Rothes), vier mashtuns en acht stalen washbakken. Deze lijn is goed voor drie miljoen flessen single malt per jaar. Productielijn 2, die in 2008 in gebruik kwam, ziet er helemaal anders uit. Hier staan acht Holstein stills zoals je maar zelden ziet in Schotland: een combinatie van een klassieke still met een kolom. Alle rondapparaten zijn zowat dubbel zo groot als bij lijn 1, zodat hier zes miljoen flessen per jaar van de band lopen. De Holstein stills zijn instelbaar wat het aantal platen betreft en dat zorgt voor verschillende types whisky. King Car brengt meerdere whisky s op de markt. Kavalan Whisky is de basis van alles (een vrij jonge, zoete whisky met veel

12 fruit), Kavalan Concertmaster (een port finish) en drie Kavalan Solist (een single cask ex-bourbon, een single cask Sherry vat en een single cask gerijpt in een Portugees wijnvat. De eerste twee aan 58,7% Abv, de derde aan 59,4% Abv). Het zijn stuk voor stuk whisky s die in elke whiskykast een plaats verdienen. Algemene kenmerken: zeer fruitig (veel mango), honing, vanille, kokosnoot en chocolade. Ze bewijzen duidelijk dat whisky (vooral in zo n klimaat gerijpt) niet echt oud moet zijn. Naast de Kavalanreeks brengt King Car een luxe single malt onder eigen naam op de markt: King Car Whisky, zonder vermelding van de leeftijd en aan 46% Abv. Deze whisky is zeer rijk aan aroma s en heel complex met een uitgesproken tropisch karakter: papaja, banaan, kokosnoot, enz. Taiwan whiskyland: gan bei! In 2009 voerde Taiwan vierentwintig miljoen flessen whisky in. 84 procent daarvan kwam uit Schotland. De rest werd ingevuld door o.a. India (8%), Japan (4.5%), Frankrijk (1.6%) en Canada (0.7%). Een aantal daarvan kreeg een nieuw label op, vóór die flessen in de winkelrekken kwamen. Volgens IWSR staat Taiwan nu op nummer vijf als markt voor Schotse whisky. Ze worden enkel voorafgegaan door de USA, Frankrijk, de duty free markt en de UK. The Macallan en Diageo s The Singleton zijn er samen met Glenfiddich en The Balvenie de grote klimmers. Daarmee is Taiwan de grootste ultra-premium spiritmarkt van Azië en men drinkt er meer superdure malts dan de rest van de wereld samen. Taiwan is ook het enige land ter wereld waar evenveel malt whisky als blended whisky wordt gedronken. Samen drinken is een belangrijk onderdeel van de Taiwanese cultuur. Ze noemen dit gan bei, wat ad fundum of tot op de bodem betekent. Het woord drinken wordt er steeds gekoppeld aan poëzie, feest en zingen. Niet

13 meedrinken betekent zoveel als uitgesloten worden. 58 procent van de Taiwanezen houden vol dat ze enkel tijdens de weekends drinken, maar toch stijgt het alcoholverbruik met meer dan drie procent per jaar. Goed om weten is dat de wet zegt dat je er niet meer dan 0,25 gram alcohol per liter in je bloedsomloop mag hebben. Anders vervalt je rijbewijs voor één jaar. Kavalan in je shop? De Taiwnese wet voorziet dat whisky twee jaar moet rijpen in houten vaten voor het die naam mag krijgen. Niet drie jaar zoals in Europa. Daar hebben ze een goede reden voor: het jaarlijkse deel van de engelen (wat uit de vaten verdampt) schommelt in dat land tussen 15 en 18 procent. Zo raak je snel alles kwijt. Maar je spirit rijpt ook sneller. Om op de Europese markt te komen, moeten ze er dus nog een jaartje bij doen. En dat doen ze graag. King car is volop bezig met het patenteren van de naam Kavalan in heel Europa en met het bestuderen van de Europese markt. Kavalan vind je dus nog niet meteen in je geliefde shop, maar hou de markt in de gaten en wees er snel bij. Fernand Dacquin, organisator International Malt Whisky Festival Gent

16 frequencies to Eastern Europe Austrian Airlines has taken the first concrete step in its corporate strategy, the 2012 Work Programme. From the summer of 2012 onwards, we shall be sharply increasing flight frequencies to our core markets in Eastern Europe, and building up capacity to the Middle East in a trade-off with the destination of Mumbai, said Austrian s Executive Board member Andreas Bierwirth, summarising the key points of the new route network. Focussing on these core markets is also designed to contribute to increasing the revenues of Austrian Airlines over the long term. The reworked route network in more detail: Reinforcement of Focus East and selected destinations in Western Europe In Eastern Europe, Austrian Airlines will be increasing the number of flights it operates itself from Vienna to Bucharest from three to five a day this coming summer, and to Sofia from four to up to five a day. The number of flights operated to Belgrade was raised from three to up to four a day in the

17 winter schedule. In Western Europe, Austrian Airlines will also be offering passengers one additional self-operated flight a day to London Heathrow from summer onwards, so the carrier will now be flying to the British capital four times a day. In addition to this, the Austrian airline is building up its flight product to and from Barcelona by one flight a day. From 25th March 2012 onwards, an Austrian flight will be taking off for the Catalonian capital three times a day. Better connections between Austrian regions Austrian Airlines is also to offer clients more flights within Austria: from 1st March onwards, an extra morning flight will be travelling between Klagenfurt and Vienna. This means Austrian will now fly up to five times a day between Carinthia and the national capital. The extra flight to and from Linz already introduced in the winter schedule will naturally remain in place in the summer schedule. This means Austrian Airlines will fly to and from Upper Austria up to four times a day. Connections to and from Graz, Salzburg and Innsbruck, which are already extremely well developed, will continue to operate, as will the three flights a day the company operates to and from Altenrhein. This means the home carrier of Austrian businesses offers the optimal connections to and from the Vienna hub, and from there to around 130 destinations worldwide. Mumbai aircraft to be used in Middle East from summer onwards From the summer schedule, Austrian Airlines will be stopping its operations to and from Mumbai. In future, the long-haul

18 aircraft previously used on this route, a Boeing 767, will be deployed on flights to and from Tel Aviv and to Tehran. Austrian Airlines continues to fly six times a week to New Delhi. Tripoli back in flight schedule From the summer schedule onwards, Austrian Airlines will be relaunching its flights to Libya, flying five times a week to and from Tripoli. Austrian was temporarily forced to stop flying to and from Libya in February 2011 due to political unrest in the country. Three times a day to Stockholm From the summer onwards, Austrian Airlines will be operating three flights a day to Stockholm, one flight fewer than before. The evening flight will no longer be offered. Austrian Airlines Austrian Airlines is Austria s largest carrier and operates a global route network of round 130 destinations. In Central and Eastern Europe, the route network is particularly dense: With 46 destinations Austrian Airlines is the market leader throughout the region. Use Aviation Strategicall Singapore The International Air Transport Association (IATA) urged policy-makers to use aviation as a strategic asset. When the relationship between industry and government works, the results are brilliant. Policies that support aviation s competitiveness deliver wide-ranging benefits across economies by connecting business to markets, said Tony Tyler, IATA s Director General and CEO. Aviation is a key economic contributor. In Singapore, for example, where the government has supported aviation as a strategic industry, it contributes 119,000 quality jobs and 5.4% of GDP. This is according to Oxford Economics studies commissioned by IATA to demonstrate to governments the catalytic impact of a healthy aviation sector on national economies. The connectivity that aviation provides to Singapore has enabled it to develop as a successful regional hub for sectors as diverse as finance, healthcare, culture and education, said Tyler in a keynote address to the Singapore Airshow Aviation Leadership Summit.

20 Not all governments have the same positive approach. India is one market that is missing out on aviation s potential as a result of a policy framework that does not support aviation s competitiveness. For example, high taxes, a lack of capacity in Mumbai and increasing infrastructure costs in Delhi are holding back Indian aviation s potential. The stunted growth of Indian aviation comes with an economic cost. India s population is about 240 times the size of Singapore s. But the number of aviation jobs is just about 14 times larger at 1.7 million. And the economic contribution of aviation is still only 0.5% of the Indian economy. It is an important 0.5%. But even considering the differential in GDP/capita between Singapore and India, these numbers tell us that there is tremendous unrealized potential in India, said Tyler. Asian Growth Asia is driving growth and shifting aviation s center of gravity eastward. In 2010 about 33% of passengers traveled on routes to, from or within Asia-Pacific. For North America and Europe the equivalent number was 31%. By 2015 IATA s passenger forecast anticipates that Asia-Pacific will represent 37%, while traffic associated with Europe and North America will fall to 29%. Over that same period, total passengers worldwide are expected to rise to 3.55 billion. Of the 877 million additional passengers that will be generated, 212 million are expected to fly on routes associated with China. Looked at in terms of propensity to travel, Asia has tremendous potential for future growth. The average person in the US travels by air 1.8 times per year, while in Germany the equivalent is one trip annually. For China the average is 0.2 air trips per person per year and for India it is just 0.1. Within the next decade China is expected to reach the $15,000 per capita income level at which point annual air travel becomes possible. Achieving that in China will generate an extra billion annual travelers, said Tyler.

21 Growth brings challenges in areas such as security and climate change. These are best met by governments and industry working together with common purpose. Security: Tyler urged broad cooperation among industry and governments to realize the Checkpoint of the Future. Aviation is far more secure today than prior to 9.11 but airline costs ballooned to $7.4 billion annually while the level of convenience for passengers deteriorated. The introduction of more complex procedures has resulted in a decline in hourly passenger throughput at security checkpoints from an average of 335 (pre-9.11) to 149 today. Security is a top priority that must not be compromised. But everybody hopes for an early evolution from an airport checkpoint experience defined by queuing, unpacking, removing clothing, separating certain items and possibly invasive searches. The system works, but it is struggling to cope with today s volumes. Growth will only make the challenge bigger. One of my priorities is to build global consensus that will see the Checkpoint of the Future improve the quality and convenience of airport security, said Tyler. The Checkpoint of the Future envisages using passenger data collected for immigration authorities to differentiate airport screening. Secondly, it incorporates technology expected to be available in a seven to ten year time frame to enable passengers to walk through checkpoints without stopping or unpacking. Along with support from Interpol, the European Commission, the US Department of Homeland Security and the Chinese government, 16 states have endorsed the Checkpoint of the Future concept. Climate Change: The aviation value chain is committed to improving fuel efficiency by an average of 1.5% annually to 2020, capping net emissions from 2020 with carbon-neutral growth and cutting its carbon footprint in half by 2050 compared to 2005 levels. Improvements in technology,

22 operations and infrastructure as well as the use of positive economic measures are needed to achieve this. With the potential to reduce aviation s carbon footprint by up to 80% (over the lifecycle of the fuel), sustainable biofuels have a big contribution to make. To move into general usage, we need the price to drop and the supply to increase. Policy measures that and de-risk the investment needed for the scaling up of commercial aviation biofuels projects are crucial, said Tyler. Positive economic measures such as emissions trading are a necessary, if temporary, bridge to reach aviation s climate change targets. To be effective and avoid market distortions, these measures must be globally coordinated. Europe deserves credit for pushing this issue up the international agenda and it is at the forefront on emissions trading. But its unilateral approach must change, said Tyler. The industry supported the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) as an intra-european solution that would avoid uncoordinated tax measures. But the scope was extended beyond Europe s borders and there was no let-up in taxation. Departure taxes in the UK, Germany and Austria introduced as environmental measures cost over EUR 4 billion. At current prices for UN issued Certified Emissions Reductions, that would offset aviation s global CO2 emissions about one-and-a-half times. And ETS is coming on top of that, said Tyler. Non-European governments see this extra-territorial tax collection as an attack on their sovereignty. They are taking action. Aviation can ill afford to be caught in an escalating political or trade conflict over the EU ETS. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is the only way forward. I sense a greater appreciation in Europe that a global solution under ICAO may take time, but it will produce a superior result. It is more important than ever for Europe to be a fully engaged participant in discussions at ICAO aimed

23 at delivering a global solution, said Tyler. 26 China Times: Remembering the good old times The news of Mandarin pop legend Fong Fei-fei s death has brought deep shock and sadness to her many fans. Fong Fei-fei s songs and performances have become unerasable memories for many Taiwanese people who grew up listening to the singer in the 1970s and 1980s. We should consider building a memorial hall to commemorate the legendary diva. During those decades, when manufacturing was the mainstay of Taiwan s economy, Fong Fei-fei was the best link between pop culture and economic activity. Her popularity among bluecollar workers won her the reputation of being an angel of laborers. Due to Fong Fei-fei, the lives of many young people from society s grassroots were full of hope because they had found someone they could identify with. In 1984, a fan club dedicated to Fong Fei-fei was launched. The club was the first of its kind in the history of Taiwan s music and television industries and is still in operation today. Compared with the vanity of today s show business stars, Fong Fei-fei represents a more humble style of performance. In her

Low) ENDITEM/npw EVA Air urges stronger Taiwan-China aviation link Taipei, Feb. 13 (CNA) Taiwan s second biggest international carrier urged the government Monday to highlight aviationrelated issues in future Taiwan-China talks, so the industry could operate with more flexibility amid a laggard world economy and higher oil prices. EVA Airways Corp. (EVA Air) said while a decline in air cargo shipments has continued since last year due to decreasing demand for Taiwan s electronic devices, it hopes China s territorial air space could be opened up to allow shorter routes on long-haul flights. The proposal is also aimed at addressing the problem of

28 surging oil prices across the world following continuing political turmoil in the Middle East, said EVA Air President Chang Kuo-wei. According to state-run oil refiner CPC Corp., crude oil prices have reached US$0.85 per liter this month, a 15 percent yearon-year growth. A free and open sky will help us cut down budgets tremendously, Chang said, adding that fuel expenses account for about 40 percent of its operating costs. For instance, Chang said, a Taipei-Paris route flying over China instead of Russia could save the airline 30 minutes per trip, or NT$100 million (US$3.4 million) each year. In addition, Chang suggested China could ease its travel restrictions, so Chinese travelers could transfer via Taiwan without having to obtain exit and entry permits. As airplanes using major Chinese gateways in cities such as Shanghai are often overbooked, international travelers from less major China cities have been forced to transfer via countries like South Korea a market segment Chang described full of business potential. If Chinese travelers could transfer via Taiwan to the United States, Chang said, the airline could double its Taipei-Los Angeles service to four flights per day.
