Theo Bos fotografeer Rondhangen op een plek en wachten tot er wat gebeurt. Het is de fotografiemethode van Theo Bos. Van tevoren heb ik niet meer dan een vaag beeld, maar als ik eenmaal de sfeer aan het proeven ben, ga ik zien waarop het vage beeld concreet gebaseerd is, het gaat steeds meer leven. Hij krijgt associaties bij wat hij ziet. In een foto legt hij een zichtbare link tussen zijn associatie en het beeld. Daardoor staat het beeld ergens voor en krijgt het een bepaalde zelfstandigheid. Hij jaagt op zijn prooi. Al wat ik moet doen is een standpunt innemen en wachten tot mijn omgeving uit zichzelf doet wat ik wil. Op dat moment maakt Theo Bos de foto. Hij is niet snel tevreden, zijn foto s beantwoorden aan strenge eisen. Allereerst moet het onderwerp goed in zijn beeld zitten. Het beeld mag niet uit elkaar spatten. De verschillende componenten ondersteunen elkaar, zodat de foto de toeschouwer een verhaal vertelt. Als er geen extra laag in zit, dan grijpt de foto mis. Een donor is bijvoorbeeld meer dan een persoon van wie bloed afgetapt wordt. Op zo n moment geeft iemand zich voor de onbekende ander. Bij de donors zag ik vaak een serene gelaatsuitdrukking. Dat zie je ook op de foto s. Het riep bij mij het caritas-beeld van Christus op. Op zo n moment wordt het ideaal om de mensheid tot nut te zijn wordt een gegeven. Op bepaalde foto s lijken de bloedzakken op een zakelijk product. Op andere foto s roept een bloedzak meer iets op van een hart waarmee zorgvuldig omgegaan wordt. Een paradox. De foto klopt als bepaalde opzichten zich tegen elkaar afzetten, en elkaar versterken. De bloedvoorziening draait op donors. In zeven stappen naar zekerheid garandeert Sanquin de hoogwaardigheid van het product. Anselma Bueler Photographer Theo Bos at Work Just hanging around and waiting for something to happen. That is how Theo Bos goes about his photography. Beforehand, I have no more than a vague image of what I m after, but once I sample the atmosphere I begin to see what this vague image is actually based on, and it gradually comes to life. What he sees brings associations to mind. In a photograph he forges a visible link between his associations and the image. The image means something and acquires autonomy. He pursues his prey. All I need to do is take up my position and wait for my surroundings to do what I want them to do of their own accord. And that s when Theo Bos takes the photograph. He is not easily satisfied. His photographs comply with strict requirements. First of all, the topic should fit the image well. The image may not explode. The different components should support each other so that the photograph tells a story. If it doesn t have an extra dimension, then the photograph misses the point. A donor, for instance, is more than someone who is just having his blood tapped. At that moment, he is donating himself to an unknown fellow human being. I often saw a serene expression on the faces of donors. You also see that in the photographs. I associated it with the charity of Christ. At that moment, the ideal to be of use to humankind becomes reality. In some photographs the blood bags look like commercial products. In others, the image evoked by a blood bag is more one of a heart that is treated carefully. A paradox. The photograph is right if certain aspects in it contrast one another, and reinforce one another. Provision of blood depends on donors. Sanquin Sanquin verzorgt op non-profit basis de bloedvoorziening in Nederland en bevordert bloedtransfusiegeneeskunde zodanig dat wordt voldaan aan de hoogste eisen van kwaliteit, veiligheid en doelmatigheid. Zij levert producten en diensten, verricht wetenschappelijk onderzoek en verzorgt onderwijs, opleidingen bij- en nascholing. Sanquin geeft het tijdschrift Bloedbeeld uit, bestemd voor hen die gebruikmaken van haar producten en diensten: medisch specialisten, klinisch chemici, ziekenhuisapothekers, ziekenhuizen en onderzoeksinstellingen in Nederland. Bloedbeeld wordt ook gezonden aan landelijke advies- en beleidsorganen op het gebied van de gezondheidszorg, overheid en media. Het verschijnt vier keer per jaar. Naast artikelen over de ontwikkelingen en activiteiten binnen Sanquin op het gebied van productie, diagnostiek, onderzoek en onderwijs wordt in Bloedbeeld ook een fotografisch beeld van Sanquin gegeven. Jaarlijks wordt hiertoe een themaopdracht gegeven aan een fotograaf. In 2004 werd de opdracht verstrekt aan Theo Bos en luidde de titel van de opdracht Bloedbank: van donor tot ziekenhuis. Deze bundel omvat het resultaat van deze opdracht. Theo Bos heeft met zijn fotografie op autonome wijze en met grote intensiteit een beeld vastgelegd van de dagelijkse praktijk in de Bloedbank. Sanquin Sanquin is a non-profit service for national blood supply in the Netherlands. It advances blood transfusion medicine in such a way as to comply with the highest demands of quality, safety and efficiency. Sanquin supplies products and services, performs scientific research and provides further training and refresher courses. Sanquin publishes the quarterly, Bloedbeeld (Blood Counts). It is intended for the users of Sanquin s products and services: medical specialists, clinical chemists, hospital pharmacists, hospitals and research institutions in the Netherlands. Bloedbeeld is also sent to national advisory bodies and policy makers in health care, the government and the media. Besides articles on the internal developments and activities in the field of production, diagnostics, research and education at Sanquin, Bloedbeeld also gives a photographic impression of Sanquin. Annually, a photographer is assigned a theme. In 2004, Theo Bos was granted the commission titled: Blood Bank: from Donor to Hospital. This collection is the result of his work. By means of his powerful, autonomous photography Theo Bos has effectively portrayed the daily routine at the Blood Bank.
