1 NATUREALLY Commissioned work for the hospital of Enschede (MST) 2016 Transparent print and coloured backlight. 450 x 800 cm, Geert Mul 2016 (Nederlandse tekst onderaan de pagina) The work of art called Natureally is specifically designed for the MST hospital in Enschede and is inspired by the idea of a healing environment. In line with this idea a design originated with the underlying goal to increase the mental space of the hospital s visitors and patients. Considering the broad range of emotions the public goes through in a hospital environment, I started thinking how a work of art could play a positive role in this process. I concluded that the art piece not necessarily had to refer to something specific, but had to create a mental space. Amazement for example, is one way of creating mental space. Elements such as perception of waiting, use of colours and (images of) nature play an important role in the ideas on healing environment. The original purpose of the work of art s location was a light wall. In this piece of art, I have combined the use of light and natural images. I have created a transparent landscape print, and used a light source behind the print which illuminates the landscape in different colours. The landscape is a collage of landscapes from the Enschede area, photographed in different seasons. The collage is shot with extremely high resolution, so the picture despite its dimensions (4,5 x 8 metres) is still well-defined and full of detail; you can even discern the leaves veins. The change in light colours introduces an element of time. The different seasons become visible one by one with every changing colour. Therefore, the work refers to an often used theme in folkloristic art: the four seasons. During my search for natural images in the Enschede area, I stumbled upon a 500- year-old oak tree called Kroezeboom at Fleringer Es. When I saw it, I immediately knew this tree would play the leading part in this work of art. In the past centuries, Kroezebomen had a special function in east and central Netherlands. They acted as judicial location, border marker and/or had a spiritual function. I wanted to transfer the special energy (Ki) from this 500-year-old oak tree to the hospital. Geert Mul 2016

7 Het kunstwerk Natureally is speciaal ontworpen voor het MST ziekenhuis te Enschede en is geïnspireerd door het idee van een healing environment.

8 In het verlengde van deze ideeën is een ontwerp ontstaan met als onderliggend doel het vergroten van de mentale ruimte van bezoekers en patiënten van het ziekenhuis. Er van uitgaande dat het publiek in de context van het ziekenhuis een breed scala van emoties doorloopt ben ik na gaan denken over hoe een kunstwerk daar een positieve rol in zou kunnen spelen. Ik kwam tot de conclusie dat het kunstwerk niet perse naar iets specifieks zou moeten verwijzen, maar juist een mentale ruimte moest creëren; verwondering is bijvoorbeeld een middel om mentale ruimte mee te creëren. Elementen als wachtbeleving, kleurgebruik en natuur(beelden) spelen in de ideeën over healing environment een belangrijke rol. Op de locatie van het kunstwerk was oorspronkelijk een lichtwand ontworpen. Ik heb het gebruik van licht in dit werk gecombineerd met het gebruik van natuurbeelden. Ik heb een ontwerp gemaakt met een transparante print van een landschap met daar achter een lichtbron die het landschap in verschillende kleuren uitlicht. Het afgebeelde landschap is een collage van landschappen uit de omgeving van Enschede gefotografeerd in verschillende seizoenen. De collage is gemaakt in een extreem hoge resolutie zodat het ondanks de afmetingen (4,5 x 8 meter) van dichtbij nog scherp zijn en vol met detail; de nerven van de blaadjes zijn zelfs nog zichtbaar. De verandering van de kleur van licht introduceert een element van tijd in het werk de verschillende seizoenen worden een voor een zichtbaar met de verandering van de kleur van het licht. Het werk refereert daardoor ook aan een vaak gebruikt thema in folkloristische kunst: de vier seizoenen. Tijdens mijn zoektocht voor het verzamelen van natuurbeelden in de omgeving van Enschede kwam ik een 500 jaar oude eik genaamd Kroezeboom (kruisboom) op de Fleringer Es tegen. Op dat moment wist ik dat deze boom de hoofdrol zou gaan vervullen in dit kunstwerk. Kroezebomen hadden in de afgelopen eeuwen in midden en oost Nederland een bijzondere functie als rechtsplaats, grensmarkering en/of een spirituele functie. De bijzondere energie (Ki) van deze 500 jaar oude boom wilde ik graag meenemen in het ziekenhuis.
