Hydrogen Roadmap How the smallest element in the periodical system can become the largest driving force for the energy and chemical feedstock transition Jörg Gigler & Marcel Weeda TKI Nieuw Gas VEMW Energiedag, Rotterdam, June 7, 2018
The Hydrogen Roadmap: why and how? Motive: Movement in the field of hydrogen; the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy requests for a hydrogen roadmap Objectives: Indicate the potential of hydrogen in a sustainable energy system in 2050 Give an overview of actors and activities on hydrogen in the Netherlands Advise what steps should be taken and which activities are necessary to realise the potential of hydrogen Approach: Interviews, workshops, reports/literature, analysis 2
Markets for hydrogen 3
Green hydrogen and climate neutral carbon: green chemicals ( and synthetic fuels) 4
Zero-emission heavy-duty logistics: trucks, material handling vehicles, inland vessels 5
Clean transport in and around cities: Public transport, taxis, carbage trucks, sweepers, boats, 6
Hydrogen production and zero-emission power production 7
Centralised H 2 production with CCS: decarbonising natural gas (CH 4 ) with adapted infrastructure and decentralised utilisation 8
It s the system, stupid! 9
Hydrogen is about renewable energy Enabling maximization of using our renewable energy potential 10
So Hydrogen is fantastic! 11
Proposals for next steps Outlines of a transition program hydrogen Transition program Hydrogen: a planned, coordinated approach with the following elements: 1. Integral Planmaking for energy system with hydrogen (for the next 10-15 yrs, and outlook to 2050) 2. Putting hydrogen into practice (start immediately with what is already available) 3. Research & Development for hydrogen (fundamental and applied in view of NL strengths) Provide guidance/coordination and facilitation/support for hydrogen (next 5 yrs, then review and adapt if needed) 12
Important (innovation) challenges 1. Cost price reduction and technology improvement to reduce the cost of hydrogen Components and systems 2. Green electricity for green hydrogen More, more, more 3. Support for CCS to produce blue hydrogen it is possible, but is it accepted? 4. Financial support To bridge the gap with fossil fuel based alternatives 5. Institutional conditions need to be tackled Rules and regulations, safety, public support etc 13
