6 BESTE OUDER DEAR PARENT Do you have a child born in 2014? Or do you want to change your child s school? This brochure gives you information about the common enrolment regulation in all preschool education and primary education in Ghent. With this regulation we would like to give everyone an equal opportunity to enrol in a school of choice. Some schools have limited places. To avoid queues at school doors you have the possibility to apply your child online through from 29 January 2016 (12:00 noon) until 19 February 2016 (12:00 noon). Afterwards you will confirmation stating the name of your child s designated school. You can find the calendar with the important dates on the back side of this brochure. What are the advantages of applying online? 1. You will get priority over parents who don t use the website. 2. You can apply for multiple schools. 3. You will be ranked according to distance home-school or schoolworkplace. 4. Your chances for a ticket will increase. The number of disadvantaged and advantaged children has taken into account when distributing the places in the schools. 7 WHICH CHILDREN? All children born in 2014 who go to school for the first time even they will start on 1 September 2017 Older children if their parents want to change their school next school year. Even if the school of your choice have never had queues, we recommend you to apply through the website. The situation could be different this year. In order to enrol your child in a Special Education school you will need a referral document to a Special Education school. The CLB s (Pupil Guidance Centres) can help you with this matter. Enrolment takes place at the school itself. 17

18 Special education aims at children who need special help due to a mental or physical disability or learning or educational difficulties. We distinguish different types: The basic type (basisaanbod): aims at children with various serious learning difficulties Type 2: aims at children with a mental disability Type 3: aims at children with emotional or behavioural problems Type 4: aims at children with a physical disability Type 5: aims at children admitted to hospital, an institution or a sanitarium Type 6: aims at children with a visual impairment Type 7: aims at children with a hearing impairment or a speech- or language impediment Type 9*: aims at abled children with an autism spectrum disorder * the schools that will organise this type of education from September 1, 2015 are not yet known on the date of issue of this brochure This figure refers to the type of education. The SIS card, Kids-ID or sticker of your health insurance fund. The school needs an official proof of the correctly written name of your child and its national identification number (rijksregisternummer). 3 Wat gebeurt er als mijn kind op een school ingeschreven wordt? 3 What happens if my child is enrolled in a school? 1. The information about your child will be verified. 2. You have to agree with the school rules and the educational project. 20

21 3.You also have to sign the enrolment record. 4. You will receive a proof of enrolment. 4 Wat gebeurt er als mijn kind op een school geweigerd wordt? 4 What happens if a school refuses my child? 1. Your child s name will be written in the enrolment record. 2. You will receive a notice that the enrolment is not realised and your child gets a rank number. 3. The school has to respect this rank number until 30 June 2017 for children born in If the child is born later the school has to respect the rank number until the 5th school day of October Each school year, a new register is made. You can renew your application every year. 5 Waarom werken we met aanmeldingen? 5 Why do we work with an applying system? More and more schools are getting very quickly filled. Though, we would like to guarantee every child a place in Ghent and that as much as possible in the area where you live, so that you have the opportunity to get your child(ren) within walking distance to school. 6 Mag ik mijn kind bij meerdere scholen aanmelden? 6 May I apply for more than one school? Yes. There are no limits. It increases your chances of a school of your choice. Please, choose more than one school with enough available places. 7 Welke school zet ik op plaats 1? 7 Which school do I put at the top of my list? Put the school of your preference at the top of your list, even if there appear to be little or no places available at the moment of application. Your child may still be ranked highly or a place may become available later on and you can enrol your child in the school of your preference after all. Even if you have already enrolled your child in another school you can still change schools. The school will contact you as soon as a place becomes available. Rank the remaining schools in order of preference. Let nothing but your personal preferences guide you. 21

22 8 Hebben mensen die zich voor mij aanmelden via internet meer kans op een plaats? 8 Do people have more chance on a place who have applied before me through internet? No. When applying for a place for your child time plays no role as long as it is within the prescribed application period. When there is an excess of demand over supply then the distances to school have to be taken into account. 9 Wanneer maak ik een login aan? 9 When should I create a login? During the application period. 10 Hoe kan ik zien of er nog plaats is voor mijn kind? 10 How do I know if there is a place for my child? When you apply to a school you can see how many places of your child s age group are free at the start of the application period. Make sure that the schools you choose have enough places. 11 Wat moet ik doen als ik nog iets wil veranderen tijdens de aanmeldingsperiode (bijvoorbeeld nog een school toevoegen)? 11 What should I do if I want to change something during the application period? (For example to add a new school) You can view or change information with your username and your password. 12 Ik heb geen computer, wat kan ik doen? 12 I do not have a computer, what can I do? Maximum of 25% of the available places are given on the basis of the distance to workplace. For rail users the railway station is not considered a workplace. 15 Hoe bereken ik welke werkplek het dichtst ligt bij de school? 15 How can I calculate which workplace is the nearest to the school? You don t have to do this, the computer will calculate it. The computer takes the shortest distance. 16 Wat moet ik verstaan onder sociale mix? 16 What does social mix mean? With the online applications we would like to achieve a reflection of the society in which our children live by giving priority to advantaged and disadvantaged children. 17 Mijn kind gaat naar een kinderopvang in een school, heb ik recht op voorrang? 17 My child goes to a child care in the school, do I have the right to get priority? No. 18 Wordt er een school verplicht toegewezen die ik niet wens? 18 Is there a possibility that they assign a school that I do not wish? No. Only the schools you chose are taken into account. To avoid that you have no place, you have to fill all schools of your preference. The more schools, more likely to get a ticket. 19 Wat gebeurt er als ik mijn 23

24 kind niet aanmeld? 19 What happens if I don t apply for my child? Then you can still find a place from 15 April, but most schools will be fully booked. No. You have to go along the school. 21 Wanneer ontvang ik een schooltoelage? 21 When do I receive an education allowance? You have to apply for this.
