Available online: This monograph on 17th century Dutch letters written by ordinary people is Judith Nobels published PhD thesis (Leiden). The study comprises the results of her research in the project Letters as Loot. Towards a non-standard view on the history of Dutch ( ), led by Marijke van der Wal (Leiden) and financed by the Dutch Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). The project can be situated in the discipline of Historical Sociolinguistics, an area of research which is interested in the language of ordinary, less well-educated, or lower class people, the great majority of whose language was not formal or standardized enough and rarely written down. In recent years, great strides have been made in unearthing private and informal writings, especially with regard to Germanic languages, in order to contribute to what Elspaß (2005) calls a Language History from Below (cf. Elspaß et al. 2007). The Letters as Loot project aimed at exploring the source of so-called sailing letters, i.e. Dutch letters from the 17th to the early 19th centuries, written by sailors and other people home from abroad (cf. Rutten & van der Wal to appear 2014); these letters, however, were not sent to their intended addressees, but were confiscated during the Anglo-Dutch Wars. Today, about 40,000 Dutch letters are stored in the National Archives in Kew, London. As the project s homepage says, the confiscated letters of men, women and even children allow us to gain access to the as yet mainly unknown everyday Dutch of the past, the colloquial Dutch of people from the middle and lower classes ( The whole corpus of the project, more than 1,000 transcribed and lemmatized letters together with pictures of the letters and metadata, can be accessed online at ( ). Nobels pushes open a new door in the historiography of the Dutch language. Her corpus (chapter 2) comprises about 245,000 words and consists of th century letters (written between 1661 and 1675) by 441 different writers. After some remarks on the development of this corpus, Nobels presents the six independent variables (text type, region, gender, social class, age and writing experience of the writers), on which five prominent grammatical phenomena are being tested later (chapters 5-9). In detail, she describes the distribution of the writers and the VOL. 66, NO. 2,

2 TAAL & TONGVAL letters across these variables, whereby she differentiates between three subcorpora of autographs (307 letters), non-autographs (117 letters) and letters of uncertain authorship (171 letters). This sometimes difficult and complex question of authorship is addressed in chapter 3, where the Leiden Identification Procedure is presented. This procedure was specifically developed for the Letters as Loot project and combines different form and content indications of a letter with information about its sender (p. 53; cf. Nobels & Van der Wal 2012). This involved both the use of modern computer technology (The Groningen Intelligent Writer Identification System: GIWIS) and tedious further investigations for autographic signatures in several archives. Chapters 4 to 9, consisting of six individual linguistic studies on the letter corpus, form the heart of the study. Chapter 4 focuses on different types of salutations used. Nobels analyses illustrate a large amount of variation in the forms of address; she is able to show that the choice of forms of address is to some extent influenced by social class and gender, whereby, as a result of their lower degree of schooling, women and the lower social classes seem to behave similarly, just like men and the upper classes (p. 104). Her observations on the influence of the sender-addressee relationship are interesting: Letter writers used different forms of address depending on the closeness of a relationship. While we often find the pronoun jij in letters between members of the core family, for example, U is much more common in letters for cousins and in-laws (p. 112). Chapter 5 concentrates on reflexivity and reciprocity. Nobels first analyzes the rise of zich as a reflexive pronoun that replaced the older reflexive pronouns hem, haar and hun in the standard Dutch of the 17th century. Despite the scarcity of these pronouns in the corpus, the study provides some hints for a language change from above. In the corpus, zich only appears in letters from the upper middle class; in addition, it is much more common in official texts. There are only forms of the reciprocal pronoun mekaar, but not a single form of elkaar in the corpus. This is striking because elkaar is widely found in the printed works of upper-class literary authors. This result strongly suggests that the present-day standard variant elkaar was similar to zich not introduced from below but rather from above. Different forms of negation are analyzed in chapter 6. First, Nobels addresses the change form bipartite to single negation in Dutch. She again presents some evidence for a change from above. As a consequence of the prescription of single negation and the stigmatization of the bipartite negation from the 17th century, single negation was soon adopted by males from upper social classes; lower-class people from the south, especially the less well-educated females, did not start using single negation until later on. Double negation is surprisingly rare in the corpus: only 28 out of 2336 cases of negation are double, which makes further interpretation difficult. 3 BOEKBESPREKINGEN (chapter 7) is very common in North and South Holland (71% and 73% in Nobels study, p. 163) and less common in Zeeland (23%). The social variables gender, class and age also influenced writing in 17th century Holland: older, upper-class male writers use final schwa the most; the less well-educated and less routined women writers adopted the schwa-apocope change more quickly a change from below. Chapter 8 focuses on diminutives that show a transition from the Middle Dutch suffix -kijn to today s standard Dutch -je, with several further forms in contemporary Dutch dialects. Nobels observes an enormous variability of diminutives with ambiguous spellings in her letters, which lead her to the abstraction of five phonological types of diminutive suffixes (p. 202). The highest degree of variability can be found in letters by lower-class female writers with a lack of writing experience, while upper-class men were more liable to stick to certain spelling conventions (p. 224), be it the old [kə] or [n] or the new [jə]. The spelling of diminutives in proper names seems to be more conservative in comparison to other types of words. The genitive and alternative constructions are finally analyzed in chapter 9. According to research literature on 17th century Dutch, the genitive was no longer used in spoken language, but it was found abundantly in written and printed texts. Nobels assembly of genitive constructions used in the letter corpus shows 54% the periphrastic van-construction, 27% genitive, 12% s- suffix and 6% the (stigmatized!) z n-construction (p. 235). Although the number of genitive constructions seems to be quite high in a text type expected to be leaning closely to language of immediacy (p. 236), it was overwhelmingly used in formulae or fossilised constructions and thus was no longer a productive case in the written language of immediacy. This explains the higher use of genitives in formulae by lower-class writers, who use more formulae to ease the writing process (cf. Elspaß 2005: 192 and Rutten & Van der Wal 2012). Nobels finally shows that the short-before-long-principle, i.e. the influence of the length of the posessor and the possessum on the decision to use a prenominal or a postnominal construction, also applies to 17th century genitival constructions in Dutch. Nobels is well aware of the limitations of her corpus (p. 264, p. 266). She does not use the 18th century data of the Letters of Loot project, but sticks to a short time period of about ten years in the 17th century. This means that she is only able to conduct apparent-time rather than real-time analyses; the latter could probably confirm some of her hints at developments and trends. 1 The variable region is highly biased in the 17th century corpus, as more than the half of the letters is from North Holland; the majority of the rest is from South Holland and Zeeland, and there are hardly any letters from the eastern areas. This becomes problematic in some regional interpretations. For example, the huge differences in the diminutive suffixes between the West and East (see fig. 8.1) cannot be described with the corpus data. As the corpus comprises only letters from four out of six social VOL. 66, NO. 2,

4 TAAL & TONGVAL categories (p. 37) both the highest (aristocrats) and lowest class (have nots) are missing Nobels is not able to establish if either of these social groups was responsible for a language change (p. 264). This bias, however, does not diminish the results of her study, as gaining access to the language of the lowest classes, who were hardly ever able to read and write, is generally problematic. In addition, language change from above often does not result from the language use of the upper class, but rather from social aspirers from the upper middle class who used the formal variants most. Nobels observes this typical phenomenon in her discussion of the stigmatized z n-construction (p. 251), which is used more often by the upper class, who could afford to be more informal and sloppy in their writing than the upper middle class. The picture is similar for the use of the formal address pronoun UE (p. 89), which is used more frequently by the upper middle class, while the informal gij is preferred by the upper class (p. 93). The data for single negation (63% upper class, 67% upper middle class) and bipartite negation (37% versus 33%) seems to follow a similar trend (p. 146). Here, propagators of a change from above were the upper middle classes. Such changes from above could have been formulated more clearly in the analyses that show a somewhat inconsistent use of the terminology change from below and change from above, as the latter is defined as a linguistic change originating in the language use of the upper classes and spreading downwards through society (p. 5; cf. p. 121). The social variable religious confession is not dealt with in this study, although the project s database seems to store this information (p. 24, p. 308). Nobels does not discuss the reason for this (the predominance of writers with a Calvinist or Lutheran background?), but it would have been an interesting point to mention. To conclude, Nobels monograph is an important contribution to historical sociolinguistics in general and the history of Dutch in particular. Never before has such a large corpus of 17th century private letters from several social layers been investigated in the historical linguistics of Dutch. The methods developed in this study to distinguish autograph letters from non-autograph ones are of general interest for anybody working with historical handwritten texts. The grammatical phenomena analyzed are well chosen and provide new insights into the variation and change of Dutch in the 17th century as well as standardization processes. Due to the lack of adequate data, such analyses had not been possible before. Nobels structures her argumentation clearly and discusses her results carefully, always being aware of the limitation of her corpus. The rich rewards, as she titles her final chapter, are clearly visible; this study indeed offers a look at the history of Dutch from a whole new perspective (p. 257). Online beschikbaar [ ]: Historisch taalonderzoek beperkt zich in de regel tot geschreven taal, aangezien de technische mogelijkheden tot audio opnames nog vrij jong zijn. Dat een corpus van geschreven teksten niet alle stijlen af kan beelden is begrijpelijk. In dit opzicht zullen eigenschappen van historische spontane taal dus onbekend blijven. Toch zijn er geschreven tekstsoorten die vrij dicht bij gesproken taal komen of tenminste die indruk willen wekken: toneelstukken, ambtelijke protocollen, toespraken. Dergelijke teksten reflecteren echter door hun literaire of ambtelijke oorsprong slechts de taal uit de (culturele) elite (p. 15); de taal van lagere klassen blijft hierbij voor de taalkunde onbekend en onderbelicht. Het corpus van Tanja Simons brengt hier voor het Nederlands verandering in. Tanja Simons onderzoekt in haar proefschrift privébrieven uit de late 18 de eeuw van zowel mannen en vrouwen van allerlei leeftijden en uit verschillende lagen van de samenleving (p. 15). Zij is in het bijzonder geïnteresseerd in de stelling dat het taalgebruik van de late achttiende eeuw gevarieerder was dan over het algemeen wordt aangenomen op basis van gedrukte werken (p. 294). Met haar onderzoek wil ze proberen, om de witte vlekken in de taalgeschiedenis (Van der Wal, 2006) in te kleuren. Aan de hand van zes casestudies beschrijft Simons de variatie van enkele linguïstische verschijnselen en relateert ze de variatie aan sociale parameters zoals gender, sociale klasse, leeftijd en regio. Haar dissertatie kan daarmee gesitueerd worden in het vak van de historische sociolinguïstiek. Tanja Simons proefschrift is onderdeel van het project Letters as Loot. Towards a non-standard view on the history of Dutch, geleid door prof. dr. Marijke van der Wal en gefinancierd door de Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO). Het project onderzocht persoonlijke brieven uit de Sailing Letters-collectie uit de 17 de en 18 de eeuw, die door gekaapte schepen tijdens de oorlogen nooit door de geadresseerden zijn ontvangen. Het programma doelt op een specifiekere beschrijving van informeel taalgebruik door mensen uit verschillende sociale klassen. Naast dit proefschrift bestaat het ook uit Judith Nobels (2013) proefschrift met een bijna identieke aanpak over brieven uit de 17 de eeuw. Bovendien zullen Gijsbert Rutten en Marijke van der Wal beide perioden vergelijken in het te verschijnen boek Filling the gaps: rewriting the history of Dutch. Simons proefschrift omvat tien hoofdstukken. Na haar inleiding bedt Simons in hoofdstuk 1 het onderzoek in het theoretische kader in en specifieert ze de intentie om dit soort corpus te gebruiken: Deze bronnen zijn zo bijzonder omdat zij afkomstig zijn van onderbelichte groepen in de samenleving, zoals vrouwen en taalgebruikers uit de midden- en lagere klassen. Daarmee sluiten wij 178 VOL. 66, NO. 2, 2014

De persoonlijke brieven geven dus niet alleen een inblik in de taalvariatie van de 18 de eeuw, maar ze vormen tegelijkertijd een corpus met zelden onderzochte bronnen, die halverwege tussen formele, geschreven taal en informele, gesproken taal te situeren zijn. Hoofdstuk 2 is gewijd aan kenmerken en problemen van een corpus uit achttiende-eeuwse brieven, die te maken hebben met het onderwijssysteem, geletterdheid en auteurschap. Simons corpus verschilt in dit aspect substantieel van Nobels (2013) materiaal van zeventiende-eeuwse brieven, doordat de afzender in de 18 de eeuw vaak identiek was aan de brievenschrijver, terwijl dat in de 17 de eeuw door minder geletterdheid niet eens voor de helft van het corpus het geval was. Terwijl Nobels dus voor haar materiaal eerst het auteurschap moest bepalen, kon Simons zich meteen op haar onderzoek storten. Simons corpus (hoofdstuk 3) bestaat uit 384 brieven ( woorden) uit de periode , die door 292 verschillende scribenten zijn geschreven. Deze brieven worden in zes verschillende casestudies (hoofdstukken 4-9) in relatie met de onafhankelijke variabelen gender (een term die ze synoniem met sekse gebruikt, helaas zonder het onderscheid te bediscussiëren), sociale klasse, leeftijd en regio onderzocht. Simons maakt uitsluitend gebruik van beschrijvende statistiek bij gebrek aan een ander model waarin rekening wordt gehouden met de variatie tussen sprekers (p. 106). De eerste casestudie betreft aanspreekvormen (hoofdstuk 4). Simons vindt hier dat de epistolaire aanspreekvorm UE opvallend frequent wordt gebruikt. Ze stelt nauwelijks gendervariatie vast, maar wel een relatie tussen zowel de sociale klasse als de leeftijd van de schrijver en de keuze van UE respectievelijk gij en u: Brievenschrijvers uit een hogere sociale klasse en de oudste en middelbare generatie geven de voorkeur aan de aanspreekvorm UE, terwijl lagere klassen en de jongere schrijvers meer gij en u gebruiken. Of we hierbij mogelijk met een verandering door covert prestige te maken zouden kunnen hebben aangezien de aanspreekvorm UE verdwenen is licht Simons niet toe. Bovendien ziet Simons in deze casestudie van een koppeling aan de variabele regio af en geeft daar ook helaas geen verklaring voor. In hoofdstuk 5 onderzoekt Simons het gebruik van tweeledige negatie, van reflexiviteit en van reciprociteit. Ze constateert dat de tweeledige negatie aan het eind van de achttiende eeuw nauwelijks meer gebruikt werd in geschreven taal (p. 145). Met betrekking tot reflexiviteit vindt Simons een duidelijke voorkeur voor zich (p. 147), waartegen reciprociteit met verschillende varianten wordt uitgedrukt. Ofschoon in haar corpus de m-vormen (malkaar, malkander, mekaar, melkander, mekander) vaker voorkomen dan de e-vormen (elkaar, elkander), beschrijft ze het opkomen van e-vormen als een prestige-geleidde taalverandering from above (p. 159). 8 TAAL & TONGVAL De derde casestudie belicht de sjwa-apocope in werkwoordsvormen van de eerste persoon enkelvoud (hoofdstuk 6). Hier vindt Simons vooral regionale variatie en variatie met betrekking tot de sociale klasse. De kloof tussen de niet-apocoperende hoge klasse en de lage klasse, die de sjwa ongeveer 10% meer apocoperen, interpreteert Simons als symptomatisch voor een change from below. Bovendien incorporeert ze de talige context en vindt ze dat zowel informeel taalgebruik als de aanwezigheid van de stemloze plofklanken p, t en k in auslaut sjwa-apocope bevorderen. In hoofdstuk 7 wordt onderzocht in hoeverre de apocope van de slot-n in schrijftaal wordt afgebeeld. Simons splitst de types in twee taalinterne groepen en vindt variatie met betrekking tot alle vier onafhankelijke variabelen: gender, klasse, leeftijd en regio. Voor het diminutief (hoofdstuk 8) vindt ze vooral regionaal bepaalde variatie: Amsterdam wijkt met het suffix ie van de andere regio s (-je) af. Simons beklemtoont hierbij dat deze twee suffixen met verschillende uitspraken gepaard gaan: respectievelijk [i] en [jə]. De laatste casestudie betreft genitiefconstructies en hun variatie (hoofdstuk 9). Simons vindt hier dat de genitief vooral in formulair taalgebruik en in religieuze formules gebruikt wordt en dat de constructies met van de voorkeur krijgen (p. 286). Verder kon ze sociale variatie vaststellen: Het zijn met name mannelijke brievenschrijvers, schrijvers uit de hoge klasse en briefschrijvers van de oudste generatie (>50) die relatief vaak een genitief gebruiken (p. 287). Hoofdstuk 10 vat elke casestudie nog eens samen en trekt de volgende drie conclusies: 1. Ja, in het merendeel van de casestudies (maar niet in alle) kon variatie vastgesteld worden; 2. vrouwen en lagere klassen gebruiken vaak varianten die in gedrukte werken nauwelijks te vinden zijn; 3. de privébrieven vormen inderdaad een tussenvorm van geschreven en gesproken taal. Simons onderzoekt in haar proefschrift grotendeels dezelfde linguïstische verschijnselen en dezelfde onafhankelijke variabelen (behalve teksttype en opleiding/schrijfervaring) als Nobels (2013) in haar dissertatie over soortgelijke brieven uit de 17 de eeuw. 1 Simons onderzoek is daarmee bijna identiek aan Nobels studie en gebruikt complementair datamateriaal. Beide onderzoeken zijn bijzonder innovatief, doordat ze in hun data de taal van het gewone volk in de 17 de en 18 de eeuw onderzoeken. Simons vestigt een bijzondere aandacht op het gevarieerde taalgebruik van de grote massa briefschrijvers (p. 297). Haar conclusies bevestigen dan ook de waarde van het materiaal en haar proefschrift maakt een belangrijk begin met een herziene visie op de Nederlandse taalgeschiedenis. Net als Nobels studie draagt Simons studie daarmee bij aan het onderzoeksprogramma Germanic language histories from below ( ) (Elspaß et al., 2007) en belooft onder meer een nieuw beeld op de standaardiseringsprocessen dezer tijd te schetsen. 180 VOL. 66, NO. 2, 2014

9 BOEKBESPREKINGEN Al met al is het proefschrift goed gestructureerd en bevat het veelzeggende tabellen en grafieken, die de resultaten mooi aanschouwelijk maken. Simons verwerft in haar onderzoek de nieuwe inzichten, dat het taalgebruik in de late 18 de eeuw inderdaad gevarieerder was dan gedacht en dat deze variatie vooral sociaal bepaald was. In haar casestudies noemt Simons vaker de mate van geletterdheid als argument waarom het taalgedrag tussen mannen en vrouwen wel of niet verschilt: terwijl ze bij de aanspreekvormen nauwelijks genderverschillen vast kan stellen en dat met de toegenomen scholing [...] van vrouwen (p. 290) probeert te verklaren, schrijft ze de variatie met betrekking tot de genitief, het diminutiefsuffix en de apocope van de slot-n (p. 295) wel aan uiteenlopende maten van geletterdheid toe. Alhoewel dat niet per se een tegenspraak moet betekenen, valt het als inconsequentie op en verzuimt Simons het hierop in te gaan. Dit doet echter geen afbreuk aan het feit dat het Brieven als Buit-corpus veelbelovend materiaal inhoudt om de Sprachgeschichte von unten (Elspaß, 2005) in het Nederlands te onderzoeken en om een completer beeld te geven van de alledaagse, geslaagde taalwerkelijkheid (p. 15) van het zeventiende- en achttiende-eeuwse Nederlands. Tanja Simons maakt hiermee met haar proefschrift een waardevol begin. Benina Knothe (WWU Münster) Noot 1.
