Intercultural usability When developers need to make a system available for a par/cular culture, the specific aspects of the target group are evaluated and then the content and naviga/on are localized for it. However, there are many situa/ons in which Web media cannot be localized and hence, culturally heterogeneous users must interact with the same interface. The emerging strategy for this kind of usability is known as the shared meaning or shared context approach...a study of culturally heterogeneous users who provided shared contextual meanings and performance measures from interac/on with a Web interface. hop://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpl/ar/cledetails.jsp? reload=true&arnumber=4539493

Intercultural content 8 ques/ons we re likely to ask to define a content strategy are: How can I make this content understandable? (technical wri/ng) How can I make this content findable? (informa/on architecture) How can I improve the content and the processes surrounding the content? (content strategy) How can I help users learn the content? (instruc/onal design) How can I manage and re- use the content? (content management) How I persuade the audience toward a par/cular view of the content? (rhetoric) How can I make the applica/on more usable? (user experience) How I can I increase sales and adop/on of the applica/on? (marke/ng) hop://www.learnlogic.net/intercultural- content- paoerns/
Thus if the Internet, for example, is consumed in a country as a result of unconscious cultural communica/on preferences or as a result of unconscious values of being prepared to accept this new technology, Hofstede s and Hall s models and their cultural premises will be appropriate concepts for describing and explaining the cultural backgrounds. They probably will not work well, however, if several individuals increasingly use the Internet to observe and to imitate a new lifestyle from abroad as a kind of resistance against their dominant culture, or if Internet usage by a part of the popula/on of a country is denied because it is regarded as an aoribute of a denied lifestyle of another undesirable part of the popula/on. Faiola and Matei thus reiterate the importance of what we call culturally- aware design: To build sites that are robust environments for content delivery, web designers must understand how cogni/ve style can directly impact web interface and content design and user interac/on, especially in terms of holis/c and analy/c orienta/on, and their consequences for user behavior in interac/ve, hyperlinked media environments.
