11 2 Artificial Intelligence (MSc) The information presented here concerns the structure of the MSc programme in Artificial Intelligence and detailed course information. More detailed and general information about the master programme - for instance the master coordinator, schedules, etcetera - can be found at the faculty's website. 2.1 Knowledge Technology and Intelligent Internet Applications This Master programme contains elements so that the graduate student has a good overview of the contemporary literature regarding applications of intelligent websites and intelligent agents on the Internet. Furthermore, the student learns techniques and methods from Artificial Intelligence that are used in Internet applications. The master graduate student is a capable designer of intelligent websites, and applications based on intelligent agents. The student ensures that his/her designs respect the needs of the company for which the design is meant. An increasingly number of companies starts to document knowledge in the company with the use of knowledge acquisition and knowledge modelling techniques from AI. By doing this, the conduct of business is being simplified. Also with change processes in companies, automated knowledge intesive methods can be used, togehter with elemnts from economics and organisation psychology. For graduates, this is a multi-disciplinary field of labour. Researchers in Cognitive Science come from a wide range of backgrounds -- including psychology, computer science, artificial intelligence, philosophy, mathematics, neuroscience, and others -- but share the common goal of a better understanding of the human mind. The programme focuses around two main areas of study, the areas behavior and brain, and two research perspectives: empirical work and computational modelling. The underlying philosophy of the programme is to challenge students to be knowledgeable in and sympathetic to a wide variety of fields and techniques. For example, there are courses in experimentation, computational modelling, and the neurobiological basis of cognition. More specifically, the curriculum includes lectures and practical work (some of which are subject to choice) on subjects such as Vision, Attention, Neural Models of Cognitive Processes, Dynamics of Behavior, Neural Networks, Machine Learning, Brain Imaging, Emperical Method, Statistics, Cognitive Neuroscience, Multi-Agent Systems, and Psycholinguistics First year Psychology (BSc) students must also follow optional courses for a total of 5 cp and also deficiency courses for a total of 31 cp. 14 Programming (Programmeren) 6 2 (not in 06/07) Organisational Dynamics Seminar Cognitive Neuroscience Advanced Statistics for Experimentation Mini Master Project AI 6 Throughout the year 2.3 Organisation Dynamics and Self Organisation In this multi-disciplinary programme, elements from biology, social sciences, economics and computer science are integrated. By continuously generating new and diverse variants, organisms of increasingly large complexity are realised during biological evolution. Methods have been developed in AI (evolutionary methods, genetic algorithms), with which these evolution processes can be simulated. In nature, evolution leads to organisms that have such adapted to their environments that they can survive; in AI, evolution leads to acceptable solutions for problems. These methods turn out to be well applicable for the dicovery of structure in large quantities of data (datamining). In biological populations, the interaction between organisms can also be further analysed, determining largely how successfully an organism can function; this is the subject of ecology and population dynamics. Concerning social sciences, models have been developed with which dynamic organisation can be described and simulated. Such methods are used in organisation theory to analyse large organisation and analyse and support processes of change within such organisations. The objective of the programme is to endow the student with the developments on the area of artificial intelligence and computer science, and to prepare for a profession as researcher or expert in a company. The curriculum must give a good preparation on PhD research. It is expected from the graduate to be critical in a scientific manner, te be aware of societal aspects of information technology and of the creation of intelligent systems. The graduate student of this Master programme is capable of applying techniques from Computer Science to problems of an Artificial Intelligence nature, e.g., designing knowledge-based systems or multi-agent systems. This technically adapt graduate, furthermore, has learned proven AI techniques in the areas of mahine learning, neural networks, knowledge representation, and evolutionary computing. Graduates will work in a company, for a research institute or a governmental institute in close cooperation with others of the chosen discipline. This variant is intended for those students that like to specialise in one of the mentioned disciplines AI and Law In the research area AI and Law two main streams can be recognised. The first is practical or applied AI and Law, aiming to develop proper legal applications. Examples are legal databases, automated role management and legal advisory systems. The second is theoretical AI and Law or computational theory of law. This second stream is interested in foundations of and insights into Law and legal reasoning, as well as in testing AI-techniques within the legal domain. Recent research thems are validation of legal kowledge-based systems, dialogue models of legal reasoning, distributed applications. In legal practice gradually more computer applications are being realised. The judicaiary and police automate their administraion. Lawyer's offices develop knowhow-systems to manage the vailable knowledge and improve their market position. The government develops systems to aid civil servants in the drafting of legislation and the execution. These systems vary from administrative systems and databases to knowledge-based systems. Natural languages are highly symbolic, thightly structured communication systems. Linguistic research focuses on the methods and techniques needed to analyse the structure of natural languages and to use natural language in computer systems. Such linguistic knowledge can be applied to the creation of user interfaces to knowledge-based systems, automated support in the writing of technical manuals, and automated information retrieval from huge text sources. There is a growing demand for supporting linguistic technology in the development of intelligent spelling checkers, thesauri,a nd knowledge representaion of terms and concepts in domains of application. Artificial Intelligence techniques are, in turn, put to good use in linguistics. for example in the development of an extended electronic corpus of spoken and written Dutch, or in the maintenance of a knowledge-base of Dutch an Belgian governmental terminology. Retrieving information from such large databases requires a good conceptual model, and a suitable format for the lexicon. Teaching of courses in the Faculty of Arts cannot be guaranteed to be in English. 19 2.6 AI and Communication This variant is intended for students in Artificial Intelligence who want to specialize in communication. The programme consists of two parts of 60 cp each, both including their own project with master thesis: one part is dedicated to training in Artificial Intelligence at the master level, the other part is dedicated to communication and is shared with students with other BSc degrees. It focuses on science communication theory and research as well as on science communication in practice. This includes science journalism as well as museology. the use of internet for science communication and health communication Artificial Intelligence part This part consists of optional courses and a research project, including a master thesis. The project and thesis are 21 cp. For the choice of the optional courses, students should consult the master coordinator of the section where they plan to do their project Master Project CS for the Communication Variant Communication part This part of the programme consists of 60 cp. and is dedicated to Science Communication. Three courses, one internship or research project and a thesis are compulsory. The rest of the programme can be filled in with optional courses. In research projects students will focus on an aspect of science communication, while in internships students will work on a project at a trainee post in a museum, editorial office of a newspapaer etc. There they will lso do a small research project. The thesis sonsists of a study of literature on an aspect of science communication. This part of the programme is coordinated by prof. dr. Jaap Willems. 21 3 Bioinformatics (MSc) The information presented here concerns the structure of the MSc programme in Bioinformatics and detailed course information. More detailed and general information about the master programme - for instance the master coordinator, schedules, etcetera - can be found at the faculty's website. During the master bioinformatics you will be thoroughly trained in doing research and managing your own projects. In the compulsory courses you will carry out assignments that range from question sheets to complete mini-projects, while during your research internships you will work on larger chunks of new research within the IBIVU or its affiliated research centres. You can further choose a few optional courses according to your personal taste. Bioinformatics is a wide-ranging research area that integrates many neighbouring disciplines. This makes it important to be able to make your own choices and pursue your own interests. We help you in getting there by our teaching approach in which mentoring, an open-door policy and one-toone tuition are central.
