2 UNTITLED PAINTINGS Kunstenaar Willy De Sauter werkt al sinds de jaren 1960 aan een oeuvre met een fundamentele vormentaal. Terwijl zijn eerste werken voornamelijk opgebouwd waren door het systematisch herhalen van lijnpatronen, is hij zich steeds verder gaan toeleggen op éénkleurige krijtschilderijen. De eenvoud en schraalheid ervan zijn het resultaat van zijn reductieproces om tot essenties te komen. Artist Willy De Sauter has been working on an oeuvre with a fundamental language of form since the 1960s. While his first works were mainly built up by systematically repeating patterns of lines, he gradually concentrated his focus on single-coloured chalk paintings. 4 Ondanks hun minimalistische verschijningsvorm is het ambachtelijke creatieproces intensief: de houten geprepareerde panelen krijgen verschillende lagen van krijt en lijm, die af en toe aangevuld worden met pigment. De contrasten tussen glad en mat, stroken en strepen aangebracht door borstel of plamuurmes en het veranderende licht in de ruimte, tonen de rijke intensiteit van zijn palet. Ook de tentoonstellingsruimte wordt zo veel mogelijk ontdaan van visuele ruis die de aandacht afleidt en een muur wordt een drager waarop het picturale verlangen glans, diepte en schoonheid aanwakkert. De beeldende rust die hij in deze tentoonstelling opnieuw schept, daagt elke toeschouwer uit om de tijd te nemen en geconcentreerd de rijkdom aan subtiele veranderende prikkels te observeren en te beleven. Het ervaren van wit draagt op die manier een meditatieve kwaliteit en gebeurt via de architectuur, van licht en schaduw, via elk werk als identiteit op zich. 6 Despite their minimalist appearance, the artistic creational process is intensive. The pre-prepared wooden panels are given different layers of chalk and glue, which are occasionally supplemented with pigment. The contrasts between smooth and mat, strips and stripes applied by brush or putty knife and the changing light in the room reveal the rich intensity of his palette. The exhibition space is also devoid as much as possible of visual disturbance that would otherwise be a distraction, whereby a wall becomes a medium on which the visual desire rouses shine, depth and beauty. The visual tranquillity that he recreates in this exhibition challenges every viewer to take time to concentrate on observing and experiencing the abundance of subtly changing impulses.
