Get active and involved by learning from the (knitting) experts at the Klokgebouw, where new brand Granny s Finest is holding a daily workshop showcasing its hottest handicraft talents. From 2 to 3.30 p.m. until October 28, visitors are invited daily to drop in on the pensioners who make up the woolly musthaves styled by the Granny s Finest design team. The finished pieces, in natural yarns and neutral colours, reflect modern knitwear trends (so not your real grandmother s vividly coloured reindeer Christmas jumper) and range from a funky tie to snug snoods and scarves. At the workshop, the experienced knitters share their tricks of the trade or if you don t want to improve your needle skills, just chat to some members of the older generation (something of a rare opportunity on the youthcentric design fair circuit). Granny s Finest has an interesting business model. It s a foundation that was set up by Niek van Engel a year ago. The idea is to provide work opportunities for young fashion designers and social opportunities for older people, who often suffer from loneliness, he says. The knitters (100 have already signed up) are paid in outings excursions include a visit to a fashion show, as well as this week s trip to Dutch Design Week. Any profits are ploughed back into the foundation. When customers buy a garment, they have the option of writing a personal thank you note to the person who made it. 3 Dav id Heldt What Connects the Dutch? Kiki and Joost created a watchtower of seven meters high, the Urban Hunting Lodge. Joost has designed the very outspoken construction. Kiki has been painting the whole interior in watercolour drawings. On top of the lodge you have a total different perspective of Eindhoven. Visitors will be able to climb up this tower one by one. From upstairs you are free to hunt the shopping people beneath you and experience some hidden treasures with telescopes. The Eindhoven designers Kiki van Eijk and Joost van Bleiswijk are internationally known for their conceptual designs. The lamps, cabinets, textiles and ceramics they make, are characterized by personal passion and craftsmanship. Both designers graduated at Design Academy Eindhoven about ten years ago and have worked for brands like MOOOI, Swarovski and institutes such as Studio Li Edelkoort aris. MORE INFO ENGLISH Foto Nick Bookelaar Wat onderscheidt Nederland van andere landen op het gebied van design? Ik werk veel in Italië en deel daar een ruimte met jonge Italiaanse ontwerpers. Een van hen, Filippo rotasoni, zei me onlangs ook graag tijd te willen hebben om te kunnen experimenteren zoals ontwerpers in Nederland dat doen, maar dan zou hij opdrachten vanuit de industrie moeten laten lopen en dat kost hem geld. Wellicht een luxeprobleem, maar het laat goed zien wat de verschillen zijn tussen Nederlandse ontwerpers en in dit geval Italiaanse. Hoewel Nederland een van de meest dichtbevolkte landen ter wereld is, kunnen kunstenaars en ontwerpers er voor relatief weinig geld aan studioruimte komen. Bedrijventerreinen aan de rand van steden goed betaalbaar en bereikbaar worden steeds vaker gebruikt door de creatieve industrie. In stadscentra worden lege kantoorpanden ingericht als broedplaatsen en kan men voor de huur aanspraak maken op gemeentesubsidie. Ook de Kamer van Koophandel maakt het eenvoudig een bedrijfje op te zetten. Een gunstig vestigingsklimaat dus, soms misschien wel té gunstig: een natuurlijke selectie van kwaliteit moet dan vaak op een later moment plaatsvinden. Dit alles heeft geleid tot een boost aan creativiteit, experiment en vernieuwing. Het lijkt erop dat niet louter het talent van de in Nederland woonachtige ontwerpers het onderscheid maakt, maar vooral ook de ruimte voor ontplooiing. Dat doet niets af aan de kwaliteiten van het in Nederland ontstane design, maar zegt iets over het belang van een gezonde infrastructuur en sociale voorzieningen. Na een studie tot meubelvormgever aan de ArtEZ hogeschool voor de kunsten werkte Heldt vijf jaar als ontwerper in Amsterdam. In 2003 begon hij een masteropleiding aan Goldsmiths, University of London, en bleef nog twee jaar in die stad wonen. Terug in Amsterdam was hij medeoprichter van stichting Tuttobene. In 2010 richtte hij Connecting the Dots op, een internationaal designtijdschrift dat ook evenementen in binnen en buitenland organiseert. De vraag hoe die stoel wordt gemaakt, met welke middelen, waar en met welk materiaal is veel interessanter. Daar ligt de kracht van een brainport: in het produceren van een cultuur van, voor en door burgerschap. Niet het primaat van het product, maar dat van de productie is belangrijk. Het is in de productie dat we in de diepte van onze cultuur kunnen investeren, als bijdrage in een economie die lokaal en internationaal solidair is en dus waardig en die inzet op groen. De kans om op de fiets naar Taipeh te gaan, laten we niet lopen. In het Klokgebouw [plat te gron d #15 h a l l 03] presenteert Taipeh 24h de snelgroeiende designsector aldaar. Een stand ter grootte van drie Chinese middenklassewoningen. Veel porselein, verpakkingen, sieraden en citymarketing, alleen geen bemanning. Het zal het tijdverschil zijn. Het is ongeveer tien minuten van Taipeh naar de Hallenweg. [pl at t e gron d # 8 0] Aldaar aan de koffie met Lex van Studio van der Zandt. Behalve op koffie trakteert hij op een Eindhovense innovatie: de muurtatoeage. Geen print, geen airbrush, geen projectie, geen behang, geen sticker. Alleen maar inkt. Een tattoo dus. Ga kijken om het te snappen. En o ja, dat het niet om de afbeelding gaat, maar om de techniek. Staat genoteerd. Door naar het Stadhuisplein. Veel techniek. En een aardige dame die me belooft dat ze me voor 5, technisch maakt. Onweerstaanbaar. Het aanbod dat ze doet trouwens ook. Het aanbod is van Monics. Lingerie die onder aanraking verkleurt naar een soort naakt en een kaarsenstandaard die beweegt doordat de kaarsen lichter worden tijdens het branden. Helemaal in de stemming voor de avond. Morgen weer een dag. Gelukkig zijn er veel mensen die zich onttrekken aan de productielijn van de industrie en haar aanbod links laten liggen om vervolgens zelf te gaan produceren en anders te consumeren, vanuit een ander cultiverend begrip. Deze proposities en uitdrukkingen verdienen onze scherpste aandacht en een bereidheid het vreemde te ondergaan. We staan voor een radicale verandering, of we willen of niet. Als we zo goed zijn als we zeggen, zowel technisch als moreel, moeten we onze collectieve sfeer ruimer durven denken en individuele vrijheden ter discussie durven stellen; als kosmopolitische, solidaire en globaal bewuste wereldburgers. Dat staat haaks op de markt, het neoliberale denken, en op wat er nu te vaak in kenniscentra gebeurt. Nederland moet zijn primaat als handelsnatie laten varen en de eigen capaciteit opnieuw postuleren. Juist in Eindhoven leeft dit potentieel. The centre of Eindhoven, called Area Inner City, is going to be programmed with the theme Unexpected Interaction. Fed by an arousing afternoon and evening program, you will experience a strong mix of design, technology, music, fashion and food at unordinary locations. 9 Eigen Huis & Interieur loves Dutch Design Dit jaar heeft Eigen Huis & Interieur voor het eerst een ranking gemaakt van Nederlandse ontwerpers, de EH&I Top 25 Dutch Designers. Niet op gevoel of met de natte vinger, maar gebaseerd op het oordeel van een specialistenpanel, toetsbare criteria en feiten (over het jaar 2011). In de DDWtabloid verklappen we de hoogste 10. Daarom: elke dag een ontwerper in de spotlights! Vandaag: nummer 6 in de EH&I top 25: Joep van Lieshout. Ontwerper/kunstenaar Joep van Lieshout (1963) zoekt vaker wel dan niet de grens op tussen kunst en design. Controversieel, confronterend en altijd vernieuwend, dat is het werk van Van Lieshout. Zijn ontwerpen zoals het blauwe kanon zijn groots, slaan in als een bom en laten geen toeschouwer onberoerd. Een ontwerper die zijn nek uitsteekt en gelukkig maar lak heeft aan conventies. 10 Hand Made: lang leve het ambacht De grenzen tussen vormgeving, design, craft en kunst vervagen. Recent duikt nu ook het ambacht regelmatig op als een fenomeen dat in deze rij thuis zou horen. Tijdens Dutch Design Week is het in ieder geval al enkele jaren een terugkerend thema. Deze hernieuwde aandacht voor het ambacht ook wel als (creatief) vakmanschap of gewoon handwerk omschreven blijft niet beperkt tot de professionele designwereld. Ook in de privésfeer neemt de populariteit van het unieke, met de hand gemaakte product onmiskenbaar toe: een ambitieuze doehetzelver kan kiezen uit ontelbare cursussen, variërend van het traditionele potten bakken en meubel maken tot eigentijds schepnet breien en cupcakes bakken. Het woord ambacht roept bij vrijwel iedereen positieve, romantische associaties op met eerlijkheid, authenticiteit, natuurlijkheid, menselijkheid en veiligheid. Het refereert aan de goede oude tijd, toen we nog als individu gezien werden en de massaindustrie ons nog niet tot anonieme consumenten had gedegradeerd. De interesse voor het ambacht hangt samen met een dreigende teloorgang van specialistische vaardigheden, ervaring en kennis. Tenslotte staat ambacht voor positieve waarden als arbeidsvreugde, trots en verbondenheid met de natuur. Sinds enkele jaren wordt ook door de overheid aandacht besteed aan het ambacht. Economische studies hebben uitgewezen dat er de komende periode honderdduizenden ambachtslieden nodig zullen zijn in Nederland. Jonge mensen worden daarom gestimuleerd een vakopleiding te volgen waarbij ze leren met hun handen te werken. Nadat een kwarteeuw geleden de maakindustrie juist uit Nederland verdween, lijkt het erop dat er hier de komende jaren weer méér gefabriceerd zal worden. Maar wel anders, met andere productiemethoden en gericht op een ander segment van de markt. Voor Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam is dit alles een reden om komend voorjaar met een grote tentoonstelling aandacht te besteden aan het unieke, handgemaakte object. We zijn beslist niet de eersten die dat doen; wel zijn we de eersten die het begrip ambacht van een historische context voorzien en die ook vraagtekens durven zetten bij de populariteit van het verschijnsel. Het is bepaald niet voor het eerst dat een herleving van het oude ambacht wordt gepropageerd. Anderhalve eeuw geleden verlangden velen ook al terug naar de ogenschijnlijk probleemloze verleden tijd, toen alles nog met de hand gemaakt werd. Met stoom of gas aangedreven machines namen aan het einde van de negentiende eeuw het werk van ambachtslieden over en produceerden sneller en goedkoper. Het was niet langer vanzelfsprekend dat een maker zijn eigen producten ook zelf ontwierp en verkocht. Niet alleen maakte deze ontwikkeling veel gespecialiseerde vaklieden werkloos, de kwaliteit van de nieuwe, in massa vervaardigde producten was aanvankelijk slecht. De kapitalistische markteconomie brak definitief door en er ontstond een grote en arme arbeidersklasse die onder de meest erbarmelijke omstandigheden haar werk moest doen. Het is niet verbazingwekkend dat veel mensen juist toen begonnen terug te verlangen naar de tijd dat de ambachtsman nog plezier had in zijn werk, maakte waar vraag naar was en verdiende wat hem toekwam. Vanaf 1900 werd het ambacht zodoende een fenomeen, iets waar men een mening over kon hebben. Ambachtelijkheid werd iets wat nagestreefd of juist bestreden kon worden en een verschijnsel dat de vormgeving in de twintigste eeuw blijvend zou beïnvloeden. Bij het huidige verlangen naar een grotere invloed van het ambacht liggen de accenten net iets anders dan voorheen. De vermaledijde massaindustrie is immers alweer goeddeels uitgeweken naar de lagelonenlanden. Aandacht voor het ambacht is in de westerse wereld niet louter een nostalgisch terugkijken, maar eerder onderdeel van een creatieve zoektocht naar nieuwe, eigentijdse methoden en technieken waarbij de kennis en ervaring van gespecialiseerde vakmensen en de gerespecteerde waarden van de ambachtseconomie een inspirerende factor vormen. De tentoonstelling Hand Made: lang leve het ambacht in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen wordt een ware viering van het ambacht, een presentatie van de mooiste, bijzonderste en uniekste voorbeelden van creatief vakmanschap uit de afgelopen vijf eeuwen met een flink accent op het eigentijdse ambacht en de initiatieven van jonge ontwerpers. De honderden getoonde voorwerpen zijn gemaakt van de meest uiteenlopende materialen en met wellicht honderden verschillende ambachtelijke procedés. Op elke moment dat de tentoonstelling open is voor het publiek, zullen minimaal twee vaklieden ter plekke aan het werk zijn. Ten slotte wordt tweemaal een speciale markt van handgemaakte producten georganiseerd en zal het aanbod in de museumwinkel en het restaurant voor dit specifieke doel worden aangepast. De expositie wordt ingedeeld in zeven thematische groepen. Elk thema vertegenwoordigt een algemeen bekende, maar even clichématige karakterisering van het ambacht: het eerlijke, het unieke, het virtuoze, het kunstzinnige, het traditionele, het professionele en het amateuristische. De gekozen voorbeelden uit heden en verleden laten zien dat elke stereotiepe kwalificatie van het ambacht een kern van waarheid bezit, maar dat ook het tegendeel aangetoond kan worden. Veel populaire noties over het ambacht worden zo ter discussie gesteld: niet alle ambacht is eerlijk en zelfs niet altijd degelijk. Imperfectie was echt niet altijd en overal een even gewaardeerd kenmerk van het handgemaakte product. Innovatie is al eeuwenlang even belangrijk als dat nu is: ruim voor de industrialisatie probeerde men het arbeidsproces al efficiënter te maken. Lang niet alle historische producten zijn uniek en sommige zogenaamde ambachtelijke tradities blijken negentiendeeeuwse uitvindingen te zijn. Ten slotte is veel huisvlijt echt niet minder interessant dan zogenaamde professionele stukken. Zonder terug te willen naar het verleden onderstreept de tentoonstelling in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen met een overweldigende keuze aan voorbeelden dat het ambachtelijke product met het oog op de toekomst onze kritische aandacht volledig waard is. Mienke Simon Thomas is conservator toegepaste kunst en vormgeving in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam. Simon Thomas volgde vier jaar de Akademie voor Industriële Vormgeving in Eindhoven (de huidige Design Academy), studeerde vervolgens kunst en vormgevingsgeschiedenis aan de Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht en promoveerde in 1996 aan de VU Amsterdam. Zij verzorgde tal van tentoonstellingen, in veel gevallen vergezeld van een publicatie. In 2008 verscheen Goed in vorm. Honderd jaar ontwerpen in Nederland. Afgelopen jaar was zij gastdocente Dutch design aan het masterprogramma van het CooperHewitt Design Museum in New York. Bart Hess is ook bekend van de slijmjurk van Lady Gaga. Maar we konden zijn werkplek niet meteen vinden, want je kon aan twee kanten naar binnen en wij gingen de verkeerde kant op. Moesten we weer helemaal omlopen. Toen we naar binnen gingen zagen we een klas die vrijwillig meedeed. We vonden het wel nog een beetje spannend, maar het was niet eng. Eerst begreep ik niet wat ze aan het doen waren, maar na een tijdje begreep ik het toch. Ze waren in een groot gaas spijkers aan het wrijven. Als alle spijkers erin vastzaten, dan leek het net bont. We waren net te laat om eraan mee te doen, maar gelukkig was het nog niet afgelopen. Iedereen ging naar een andere tafel en daar hadden ze weer een andere opdracht. Want daar had je een soort dun zilver karton dat je doormidden moest knippen met een kartelschaar. Dan had je twee stroken met aan de onderkant kartels. Dan moest je met een gewone schaar in die kartels knippen en dan had je aan elkaar geplakte zilveren strookjes. En als je dat dan over elkaar plakte kreeg je een mooi patroon. Dat gebruikten ze dan weer voor modeshows in arijs. Toen ging iedereen weer een tafel verder, waar ze een latex doek met klemmen spanden. Daar werd vloeibare latex op gedruppeld. Dat moest een nachtje drogen. Daarna maken ze de klemmen los en dan krijg je een bobbelpatroon. En toen ik die bobbeltjes zag dacht ik gelijk aan gekookte zeeslakjes.
