Iets wat te mooi is om te gebruiken of niet bruikbaar is, schiet dan ook zijn doel voorbij. Bij het ontwerpen van een product moet dus niet de functie, maar de gebruiker en de wijze van gebruik centraal staan. Dat het gebruiksvriendelijk is lijkt vanzelfsprekend, en wanneer het af is oogt het logisch, bijna voor de hand liggend. Juist dan is er vaak een lang proces aan voorafgegaan. Het kost gewoonweg veel werk om iets vanzelfsprekend te maken. Daar denkt een ontwerper heel goed over na, zoiets ontstaat niet zomaar. Als industrieel ontwerper wil je graag producten ontwerpen waar mensen wat aan hebben en die niet ongebruikt in een la belanden omdat ze onhandig zijn. N L Foto Nick Bookelaar Maarten Baas Het leek Maarten Baas leuk een BAAS design tour 2012 door de stad te organiseren. Als opstappunt was het Stationsplein gekozen. Toen hij daar echter op geheel eigen wijze de tourbus wilde parkeren, ging het mis. Door deze onverwachte interactie was hij genoodzaakt te improviseren. Het object van Maarten Baas verwelkomt de bezoeker van DDW op ongewone wijze. De speciaal ingerichte Mercedes Sprinter is desalniettemin meer dan de moeite waard en laat op treffende wijze een idee over vormgeving zien. Maarten Baas werd geboren in Duitsland, Foto Nick Bookelaar maar groeide op in Nederland. De autonome ontwerper benadert het ontwerpproces liefst zonder vooraf opgelegde beperkingen. Hij vindt zijn drijfveer in het aangaan van nieuwe experimenten. In 2002 studeerde hij af aan Design Academy Eindhoven met de bekende Smokeserie van verbrande meubelstukken. Deze collectie is opgenomen in verschillende toonaangevende musea over de hele wereld. Baas werd in 2009 uitgeroepen tot ontwerper van het jaar door DesignMiami. Sinds 2005 werkt hij samen met Bas den Herder in Studio Baas & den Herder. Celebrate the coming weekend (and two more days of nonstop design) with a beer and a sitdown meal at Radio Royaal. And don t worry that you re missing out by taking an hour or two to relax. The restaurant is a bonafide Dutch Design Week baby and eating there is an event in itself. The restaurant was created by Niels Wouter, Bart Gardenier and Stella Birsak as a popup shop during last year s events. But they loved the space so much an old hilips factory that they decided to set up shop permanently. Eschewing a professional designer, they outfitted the space themselves with chairs from school canteens, leather sofas, and spare portraits of food by Rene Mesman. But the beauty of the location is what s been left behind: industrial equipment, exposed metal beams and a centuryold, chequered tile floor. This handsoff, pared down approach retains the history, and the industrial aesthetic, of Eindhoven s StrijpS. Everything s beautiful, says Wouters, 90% of it was already here. The location has received plenty of attention (it will be featured in Issue 90 of Frame, in January 2013), and as an added bonus, the food is great, too. 02 ddw today

3 Work With Me eople angelique spaninks Tijdens Dutch Design Week nodigt MU elk jaar een of meerdere ontwerpers uit om iets opmerkelijks te doen. Soms als curator, soms als zichzelf. Die werkwijze resulteert in de meest uiteenlopende projecten. Het kan leiden tot een expositie (After the Bit Rush, 2011), maar het kan ook uitmonden in een eenmalige gebeurtenis, een moment (Melvin the Machine, 2010), een videoessay of speculatief design (Under Tomorrow s Sky, 2012). Vorig jaar plaatste MU artificiële bomen op WildS (Make a Forest, 2011). In alle gevallen wil MU graag de vrije, experimentele kant van design stimuleren. Juist omdat Eindhoven al zo n stevig profiel heeft in toegepast, commercieel en industrieel design. Als opdrachtgever wordt MU graag verrast in de verwachting dat dat ook met het designweekpubliek gebeurt. Dit jaar heeft MU Bart Hess gevraagd. Een jonge, talentvolle ontwerper die sinds zijn afstuderen aan de Design Academy (2007) in hoog tempo naam maakt in de mode, kunst en designwereld. Hess staat bekend om de wonderlijke, groteske silhouetten die hij creëert, vaak met lowtech materialen (ballonnen, spelden, tandenstokers, schuim, tape). Op ambachtelijke wijze construeert hij monstrueuze mensfiguren, mutanten, die hij vervolgens animeert en vastlegt in beeld. Alles stroomt en vloeit en groeit. Zijn futuristisch ogende modellen lijken vooruit te wijzen naar een toekomst van ongebreidelde genetische manipulatie, schimmelgroei, woekering en celdeling een voortdurende transformatie en metamorfose. Hess voorziet zijn modellen van een levende, ademende huid. Of hij laat ze verstikken in slijmkleden. Alles oogt esthetisch, vervreemdend, verontrustend, symbiotisch, parasitair. Je bent als mens in handen van Hess je vorm niet zeker. MU vroeg Hess wat hij nog zou willen maken voordat hij naar Londen vertrekt (Hess staat aan de vooravond van een verhuizing). Een sweatshop, antwoordde hij. Met tienduizend arbeiders. Hij wil vier halffabrikaten maken, enorme lappen handmatig bewerkte huiden, die hij later kan gebruiken in zijn mode, kunst en designprojecten. De productielijn die Hess hiervoor heeft opgezet is nadrukkelijk hiërarchisch, met Hess aan het hoofd. De mensen die hij zoekt om die productielijn te bemannen zijn enthousiaste maar vooral hardwerkende, volgzame ondergeschikten, die werken volgens zijn normen, conform zijn kwaliteitseisen en productienormen. Waarom zou iemand zich daar in godsnaam of om in termen van Aldous Huxleys Heerlijke nieuwe wereld te spreken, in fordsnaam voor lenen? Vrijwillig in een productielijn plaatsnemen en onbetaald werk verrichten ter meerdere eer en glorie van Bart Hess, in ruil voor wat leuke fotootjes op Facebook, Twitter, en het idee dat je meegewerkt hebt aan een toekomstig kledingstuk voor, wie weet, Lady Gaga of Walter Van Beirendonck? Enter a brave new world. Welkom in de wereld van de creatieve industrie waar crowdsourcen een mooie term is voor de inzet van goedkope arbeid, waar social design en cocreation de glimmende trefwoorden zijn waaronder Hess project op de website van Dutch Design Week zo vriendelijk gevangen is, en waar cynisme iets van de vorige eeuw is. Andere trefwoorden: design thinking, crafts, modern techniques, future concepts. Soms is het een verademing als iemand zegt wat je moet doen, zei Miranda July ooit over Learning To Love You More een van de succesvolste exposities in het bijna vijftienjarig bestaan van MU. July nodigde (samen met Harrell Fletcher) mensen uit dingen te maken volgens zorgvuldig geformuleerde opdrachten. Onze gelukkigste en zelfs diepzinnigste ervaringen komen vaak als we de instructies van andere mensen volgen. [ ] Soms lijkt het alsof we op het moment dat we loslaten origineel te willen zijn, pas echt iets nieuws voelen terwijl het daar toch allemaal om begonnen was toen we kunstenaars werden. Misschien geldt dat voor mensen in het algemeen. Misschien is er iets te vinden in het ambachtelijke, het meditatieve, het monotone van de nauw omschreven, repeterende handeling. En wellicht vindt Hess juist op deze grond inderdaad de tienduizend geïnspireerde werkers die hij zoekt. Het zou zomaar kunnen dat mensen snakken naar het rituele, de handenarbeid, het samen werken aan iets groter dan jezelf, weg van het scherm. MU betekent in Zen zoiets als niets. 9 Eigen Huis & Interieur loves Dutch Design Dit jaar heeft Eigen Huis & Interieur voor het eerst een ranking gemaakt van Nederlandse ontwerpers, de EH&I Top 25 Dutch Designers. Niet op gevoel of met de natte vinger, maar gebaseerd op het oordeel van een specialistenpanel, toetsbare criteria en feiten (over het jaar 2011). In de DDWtabloid verklappen we de hoogste 10. Stefan Scholten (1972) en Carole Baijings (1973) werken samen sinds Hij is afgestudeerd aan de Design Academy Eindhoven, zij is autodidact. Met hun feilloze smaak en gevoel voor kleur wisten ze in korte tijd een ijzersterke collectie op te bouwen, levendig en minimalistisch tegelijk. DDW T ODAY 0 9 Einstein was here Een klein beetje verstopt in een hoek van het Natlab zit het initiatief Einstein was here. Een expositie op het snijvlak van kunst, wetenschap en design. Met in iedere ruimte nieuwe verrassingen en nieuwe inzichten omtrent licht, textiel, metaal, akoestiek, grafisch en productdesign, en kinetische installaties. De deelnemende kunstenaars en ontwerpers hebben dusdanig uiteenlopende presentaties dat een gemeenschappelijke noemer nauwelijks te vinden is, maar dat mag de pret van een bezoek niet drukken. Integendeel: een aanrader voor mensen die zich graag laten verrassen. Op bijgaande foto staat de euthannasheelchair van Kinetic Humor. Een rolstoel met buitenboordmotor. De zee in rijden, motor starten en afduwen, is de gebruiksaanwijzing van de ontwerper zelf. Maar wie denkt dat Einstein was here daarmee getypeerd is, heeft het mis. Zelf gaan kijken is het dringende advies. Urban CampScape Iedere stad heeft ze: desolate plekken met rauwe randjes die door iedereen worden vermeden en liefst ook vergeten. Studio Urban Sprinkle en Studio Synthese gaan er anders mee om. Samen zijn ze de drijvende kracht achter Urban CampScape; een event én stedenbouwkundig onderzoek ineen. Zomaar onder het Strijps Bultje tijdens DDW. Voor nieteindhovenaren: dat is op hoek van de Torenallee en de Beukenlaan in Area StrijpS. De locatie is exemplarisch voor plekken die een nieuw leven verdienen. Gedurende DDW valt hier te zien hoe dat kan uitpakken. Te zien én te beleven. Je kunt er eten, slapen,meedenken of iets uit het leuke programma meepikken. Zo kun je vandaag overdag meedoen met de workshop Green Corridor en vanavond om uur bij de WalkinMovie zijn. Benno Tempel, directeur Gemeentemuseum Den Haag Entertainment leidt af van het leven, kunst maakt je ervan bewust. Als erkenning voor het overbruggen van culturele verschillen in het Van Abbemuseum. Ik ben een allochtoon. Eind jaren vijftig zijn mijn ouders uit Saksen in de voormalige DDR naar Engeland vertrokken. Als tiener in Manchester bezocht ik tijdens zomervakanties regelmatig OostDuitsland. Dat heeft me politiek gevormd. De Koude Oorlogsjaren maakten me van een aantal verschillen bewust. Ik werd politiek actief voor Labour. Na een tijdje kwam ik erachter dat politiek vaak over onmogelijkheden gaat, terwijl kunst meestal inzet op het creëren van mogelijkheden. The impossibilities versus the possibilities. Ik koos mediëvistiek. In de Middeleeuwen leidde de komst van het christendom tot radicale veranderingen in de Europese samenleving. De kunst reflecteert het veranderde kader van die tijd. Dat was in de Middeleeuwen zo, dat is nu nog steeds zo. We staan opnieuw voor een fundamentele omwenteling. Ik heb mijn leven lang in een posttijdperk geleefd. Na het postmodernisme, postsocialisme en postkolionialisme zijn we in een nieuw tijdsgewricht aangeland. Voor het eerst maak ik deel uit van een preperiode. Klimaatveranderingen, hightechrevolutie en de crisis van het geld zijn de eerste signalen van de grote veranderingen die op ons afkomen. Het zijn verwarrende, spannende en uitdagende tijden. 10 ddw today

In de jaren vijftig was er een optocht tegen Edy de Wilde toen hij een icasso wilde aankopen. Jean Leering schafte El Lissitzky aan. Dat werk is nu established, maakt deel uit van de kunstcanon. Maar in zijn ontstaanstijd was het revolutionair. Kunst kan de rol van breekijzer vervullen. En een museum heeft de taak om werken die inslapen nieuw leven in te blazen. Dat kan door de context te veranderen. We zijn twee jaar bezig geweest om icasso s Buste de Femme in bezet alestijns gebied te tonen. icasso schilderde het werk in 1943 in bezet Frankrijk. Toen het doek uit Ramallah terugkwam in Eindhoven was het een ander schilderij met een ander verhaal geworden. Museale werken komen hier niet om te sterven. Een museum is geen mausoleum van goede smaak, maar helpt een werk in een veranderde tijd opnieuw betekenis te geven. Zonder verhalen is een kunstwerk niets. Hooguit een paar stukken hout, wat verf en een rol linnen. Er zijn nieuwe verhalen nodig. En het Van Abbemuseum vertelt die verhalen. Ik weet niet of we over vijftig jaar nog in deze vorm bestaan. Moeilijk te voorspellen. Als de recessie doorzet, hebben we over tien jaar al met een andere werkelijkheid te maken. In het verleden hadden we hier dertig tot veertigduizend bezoekers. Inmiddels zijn het er ongeveer honderdduizend. Die passen niet in het SVstadion! Een discussie over toegankelijkheid is prima. Maar ze verliest nuance zodra ze versimpeld wordt tot bezoekersaantallen en niet meer over de inhoud gaat. We laveren tussen gastvrijheid en complexiteit. Het garandeert in elk geval de spanning die tot creëren leidt. Er zijn altijd twee polen nodig. Zonder verschil tussen man en vrouw hadden wij hier allebei niet gezeten. Wie een museum louter beschouwt als plek om kunst te consumeren, doet zichzelf tekort. De lichtreclame bij de ingang van ons restaurant Echt Iets Voor U, door John Körmeling doet een appel op álle voorbijgangers. We zijn een publieke instelling. Dat verplicht ons tot openheid en gastvrijheid. Maar we geven mensen niet alleen wat ze verwachten. Integendeel. Kunst gaat bijna per definitie over het doorbreken van verwachtingspatronen. Kunst schept kaders om op een onvoorspelbare manier naar de werkelijkheid te kijken. De gastvrijheid van een museum impliceert niet de instant bevrediging waarvoor je in elk winkelcentrum terechtkunt. Ook niet het hapklare entertainment dat pretpark of kermis je biedt. Het museum van nu heeft een andere rol, daagt mensen uit om een actieve rol te spelen. We moeten leren omgaan met veranderingen in de echte en de virtuele wereld. Steeds meer leven we in een multipolaire wereld, waarin we voortdurend kennis en ervaringen uitwisselen met andere mensen en andere landen. Om kunst toe te laten is nieuwsgierigheid nodig. Als die ontbreekt, mis je ook de boom die je in het park passeert. Zonder nieuwsgierigheid hadden we het vuur niet ontdekt: het is een basis voor innovatie. Maar niet alle mensen houden van verandering. Er zijn er die de voorkeur geven aan wat ze al kennen. Nieuwe inzichten zien ze als een bedreiging, niet als een kans. Dat begint al in dit labyrintische gebouw, waarin je makkelijk verdwaalt. Ben je nieuwsgierig en avontuurlijk? Dan is het geslaagd. Zoek je houvast en zekerheid? Dan is het mislukt. Genieten van een bijzondere film, spannendculinair avonturen, drankje doen, bakkie pakken... Ook daarvoor ga je naar StrijpS! Culinair avonturen Uitgaan, maar dan anders. Zaken die je in de stad niet vindt. Gewaagde horecaexperimenten, zoals van André Amaro. Deze kok/kunstenaar is in het Ketelhuis culinair creatief met prachtige, eerlijke ingrediënten. In een verrassende entourage, wars van alle horecatradities. In hetzelfde straatje ook letterlijk zit Radio Royaal, een bijzonder restaurant in de Machinekamer, in knappe navolging van de Goudfazant in Amsterdam Noord. Eerlijk en puur. Geen flauwe liflafjes, maar lekker en authentiek tafelen tegen een verrassend decor. Over verrassend decor gesproken Als het Veem straks klaar is, geniet je in het rooftoprestaurant van een culinaire topmaaltijd met een spectaculair uitzicht. Helemaal top! Eveneens top maar tegelijk bijzonder betaalbaar lunch en dineer je in Cafée Allee. In dit restaurant aan de Torenallee, gerund door stichting Robin Hood, draait het om reintegratie en het op weg helpen van mensen en niet om jouw portemonnee. Culturele hotspot Food for the mind? Hebben we natuurlijk ook op StrijpS. We trekken bijvoorbeeld mediamuseum VOLT naar de oude hilipssite. Een betekenisvolle verbintenis. Hier ligt immers de oorsprong van radio en televisie en gaan ook nu weer ultrahightech ontwikkelingen samen met innovatieve mediaproducties. Al zijn het uiteraard niet uitsluitend nieuwe initiatieven die je naar StrijpS trekken. Ook de gevestigde orde bekent kleur. Eind 2013 verhuist laza Futura vanuit de binnenstad naar het Natlab. Centrum voor film, theater, muziek, moderne dans, performance, debat en projecten Goed voor pakweg bezoekers per jaar. Hier sluit ook filmplatform BROET aan, zodat je in het Natlabook kunt deelnemen filmworkshops en je eigen film kunt produceren. Rock, dance, discover Een avondje helemaal los? opeibiedt niet alleen oefenruimte aan beginnende bandjes, maar verzorgt ook regelmatig optredens. Leuk! Op grotere schaal knalt het in de Cultuurhallen onder in het Klokgebouw. Regelmatig decor van dancefeesten en concerten. Maar ook van culturele festivals, conferenties en exposities Op StrijpS is altijd iets te doen. De FeelGood Market bijvoorbeeld, elke derde zondag van de maand op het Ketelhuisplein. Een bruisende markt vol biologisch lekkers en ecologische leuks. Met livemuziek, workshops en theater. Ditzelfde Ketelhuisplein presenteerde zich overigens dit jaar voor het eerst als festivalterrein, met het succesvolle en gezellige Brabant Open Air. Ook bij iet Hein Eek, aan de overkant van de Beukenlaan, vinden regelmatig evenementen plaats. Een absolute aanrader ook om eens bijzonder te tafelen met je vrienden. Urban sports Inmiddels heeft StrijpS zich ook op de kaart gezet als hét centrum voor urban sports. Boulderaars uit heel Europa beklimmen bij Monk de steilste wanden. In Area 51 imponeren skaters op 2800 m² met hun meest gewaagde moves. In de BMXhal leren coole kids de tricks van hun oudere idolen, die meedoen aan internationale wedstrijden en kampioenschappen.
