Overdag is er een kleurenonderzoek met tapijtstalen. Allemaal in dezelfde kleur en even lang, in eindeloze combinaties. Nooit geweten dat één kleur tot zoveel ideeën, oplossingen en uitdagingen kan leiden. Rood blijkt een behoorlijk extreme kleur die uitstekend communiceert en zich perfect leent voor onderzoek. De presentatie van de meisjes van rens is de moeite echt meer dan waard. s Avonds tijdens het diner verzorgd door iet Bergman (alias iet Friet of Stamppiet) blijkt (natuurlijk) rood ineens ook een smaakmaker. Helaas kun je bij deze warme en liefdevolle plek, zónder muziek van Marco Borsato, tijdens DDW nog maar één keer tafelen: reserveer de laatste plekjes bij ROOD op zaterdagavond, stuur een mailtje naar rood@madebyrens.nl (aanvang uur). Binnen het thema ortal to the new world... enter the funnel verbindt Niek het Lichtplein en Clausplein met elkaar door een funnel (trechter) die al het modetalent de Krabbedans in zuigt. Als aanvulling ontwierp Martin Schuurmans een grootse trechter op het Clausplein. Dit object, ongeveer vijf meter hoog en twaalf meter breed, wordt tijdens Dutch Design Week gebouwd om bezoekers te laten zien hoe een uitvoeringsproces in zijn werk gaat. Martin Schuurmans is de oprichter en een van de drijvende krachten achter CollaborationO. In zijn werk probeert hij ruimte te herdefiniëren; de inspiratie daarvoor haalt hij uit de verborgen schoonheid en kracht in materialen, natuur en mensen. Fashion Wildchild Niek ulles is snel, enthousiast, kleurrijk en altijd op jacht naar iets nieuws. Hij helpt mensen hun ideeën te visualiseren door middel van film, fotografie en materiaalexperimenten. Met atch Up ull Over, een experimentele modefilm, won hij de Fashion Film Competition op het International Film Festival Rotterdam. MORE INFO Frame Magazine s ick of the Day De sign Debat e By Ja n e Sz i ta Dutch folk are famously opinionated, and never more so than when it comes to design (as we at the Frame office can certainly vouch). So, going on the trusty old principle, if you can t beat em, join em, we suggest heading over to this evening s Design Debate and throwing in your own two cents. Kicking off at 4pm at the Designhuis the debate will attempt to address the theme, How much design can we digest? This will translate as a look at design s newer and less tangible manifestations and its potential future contributions to our society, sciences and systems. The discussion will be moderated by Walter Amerika from the Design Academy Eindhoven. He will be joined by four speakers: urbanist and futurist Liam Young, founder of Tomorrow s Thoughts Today, MoMA researcher and writer William Meyers, and two Netherlandsbased journalists,tracey Metz and David Heidt. They will be looking at the topic from the point of view of evidence gathered at Dutch Design Week, adding fresh perspectives to the many exhibits on show. 3 Grootmoeders in modeland T hom a s de Heide A dr i e Ho o ge n d o or n [70 ja a r] Ik zit vlak voor een nieroperatie, dus ik vind het fijn om met breien wat afleiding te hebben. Het is natuurlijk geen kattenpis als je een nieuwe nier krijgt. Ik zit vaak met mijn hoofd bij de operatie, maar als ik deze sjaal aan het kabelen ben, dan vergeet ik dat ziekenhuisgedoe even. Hartstikke leuk zou ik het vinden als ik iemand op straat met mijn sjaal tegen zou komen. Gaaf toch, als iemand jouw creatie draagt? M a r l è n e Eind [65 ja a r] De oma s van Granny s Finest breien ondanks hun leeftijd hippe items als de beste. Medeinitiatiefnemer Jip ulles (31) en ontwerpster Channa Ernstsen (33) vertellen over dit modemerk waarbij jonge talenten collecties ontwerpen, die door oma s ambachtelijk gebreid worden. Sommige oma s van Granny s Finest hebben de breinaalden fulltime beet, andere werken een aantal uur per week. Het doel van dit project is het maken van mooie mode, maar achter de handgemaakte sjaals, handschoenen en mutsen zit een verhaal. ulles hoopt met zijn initiatief ouderen uit hun isolement te trekken: Wij brengen dames in verzorgingstehuizen in groepjes bij elkaar om te handwerken, zodat ze nieuwe vriendinnen maken en niet verder vereenzamen. Structuurverschillen Ernstsen heeft de ontwerpen van de huidige wintercollectie voor haar rekening genomen, waar nu bijna tweehonderd granny s mee in de weer zijn. Ze vindt het vooral mooi dat bij ieder stuk structuurverschillen te zien zijn. Iedere muts of handschoen is anders, vertelt ze. Iedere granny heeft haar eigen breistructuur, en dat zie je terug in elk product. Om elk modestuk een persoonlijke touch mee te geven, schrijven alle oma s zelf een tekstje op het label dat aan hun breiwerk komt te hangen. Voor koude dagen een warme sjaal, gebreid door Rita 81 jaar, prijkt in priegelhandschrift bij een donkergroene sjaal. Slow fashion ulles hoopt dat Granny s Finest over drie jaar een internationaal modemerk is. Dat zou echt geweldig zijn. We hebben nu al onze eigen winkel in Rotterdam en het fijne van onze slow fashionproducten is dat je ze niet na drie keer dragen weggooit: door de wol, die honderd procent natuurlijk is, kun je bijna eindeloos van je gekochte sjaals en handschoenen blijven genieten. De stand van Granny s Finest staat nog tot en met zondag 28 oktober in hal 3 (op het balkon) in het Klokgebouw (StrijpS). Iedere dag geeft een groepje oma s tussen en uur een breiworkshop. Deze oma s kwamen dinsdag naar de stand van Granny s Finest en vertelden al breiend over hun liefde voor het maken van de items: e ngl i sh w w w. ddw. n l Wat een leuk initiatief hè, van die jongens. Eh, ik bedoel mannen. Ja, voor mij zijn ze nog zo jong. Ik hou van handwerken, dus ik brei deze blauwe sjaal met liefde. Het begint allemaal met een simpel bolletje, maar je kunt van wol prachtige dingen maken. Ik begeleid ook oudere dames met handwerken en dit breiwerk doe ik er naast. Het moet natuurlijk wel leuk blijven. Ik doe het wanneer ik er zin in heb en dat is best vaak, want ik maak ongeveer één muts of sjaal per week. C on n i e va n de r Lit [8 0 ja a r] Kaarten maken, quilten en breien. Ja, ik ben altijd wel onder de pannen. Anders zit ik maar thuis alleen tussen vier muren. Nu maak ik op de club contact met andere mensen. Stiekem maken we altijd een wedstrijdje van het breien: wie werkt het snelst en het mooist? Met breien ben ik van alle markten thuis. Iedere boon heeft karakter, en dat proef je, vertelt de medeoprichter van Kaffee Fabrik. Als meester van de koffie legt De Vries uit waarom zijn koffie uniek is. De ene boon is zoet, de andere fris. Een mix van deze bonen geeft onze koffie karakter. Voorheen was De Vries een echte espressoman, maar de café cortado trok de koffieliefhebber over de streep. Het is als een cappuccino zonder de slok melk. Fris, zacht en romig: een warm gevoel in een klein kopje, zegt hij. De koffie is samengesteld uit half schuim, half espresso. De frisse bonen met zure taste in combinatie met romige melk geven cortado een temperamentvol karakter. Spirit Het zwarte goedje wordt uiteindelijk geproduceerd door de handgemaakte machines van Kees van der Westen. Hij koopt apparaten in Italië. Vervolgens sloopt hij ze en vervangt ruim tachtig procent van de onderdelen. Spirit, het nieuwste exemplaar, scoort goed bij De Vries. Door een dubbel pompsysteem valt de druk nooit weg. Maal je de koffie zelf, dan moet je heel precies te werk gaan en ben je tien minuten per kopje bezig. Spirit werkt snel en precies, daar tipt handgemaakte koffie niet aan. Fabrik Net als zijn bakkies heeft de fabriek karakter. Blauw met witte kopjes zijn perfect afgestemd op de donkere stellage van vuurhout, de blauwe opslagkratten en het zwarte tafelblad. In een zelfgemaakte sloof met apart zakje voor het baardenhaarkammetje bereidt De Vries zijn koffie in de open keuken. Voor Maarten Baas (1978) was het niet meer dan logisch toen hij de meubelcollectie Smoke bedacht. Baas werkt bijna als een wetenschapper, aan elk ontwerp gaat minutieus onderzoek vooraf. 10 Dutch design op de fiets scherpontwerp DDW Kids Het Sectie Cavontuur Foto eter van Casteren Follow the money. Altijd een goed devies en al helemaal tijdens de ABN AMRO referred Banking Tour. We stappen in bij The Embassy (passende naam) van Kiki & Joost. [M A # 0 8] De tour begon overigens bij iet Hein Eek (waar anders) en ging vervolgens voor een wandeling naar StrijpS. Onder de gasten modeontwerper Jan Taminiau, die naar eigen zeggen geniet van de liefde en de passie voor het vakmanschap dat hij ziet. En herkent. Wij wedden dat de dag met een borrel is geëindigd. Op het plein achter Cirque de Gerard staat een soort glazen huis. [M A #19] Of liever twee. Hierin huizen twee teams van ontwerpers van Industrial Design TU/e, aangevuld met ieder een student van de Design Academy. Ze ontwerpen daar in wedstrijdverband het huis van de toekomst. Interactief. Ideeën van buiten en binnen worden via het glas en een paar goede stiften over en weer gegooid. Een initiatief van studievereniging Lucid. Vanavond de uitslag. Vijftig meter daarvandaan staat de Ver Van Je Bed Show. Altijd leuk, dachten wij. Maar de Ver Van Je Bed Show was Een stukje buiten het centrum is Sectie C. Dat is een grote werkplaats waar ze dingen ontwerpen zoals meubels. Heel veel meubels. Maar ook andere dingen. Zoals auto s met een djtafel erin. In het begin hadden ze veel stoelen. Vooral lekkere stoelen. Sommige waren kleurig en handig. Er was er ook eentje met een lamp eraan. Maar buiten had je ook stoelen met een bordje aan de voorkant en die zaten aan elkaar vast in een kring. Dat heet The Living Forum. In een andere ruimte had je een stoel die van autoriemen was gemaakt. Dat voelde ik helemaal. Maar mijn favoriete stoel was die van schuimrubber, want hij was heerlijk zacht. Ze hadden gelukkig niet alleen maar stoelen. Er was ook een flitsende tafel en een lamp van legosteentjes. Die zou ik wel in mijn kamer willen. Als je doorliep naar de volgende ruimte was er een apart kamertje. Daar hingen stoffen tasjes en er was een verfplenzer. Die plenst verf op de tasjes. Buiten dat kamertje was er ook een auto met een tv erin. Als je in de auto zat, zag je een meneer die Engels praatte in de spiegels. Maar ik vind wel dat dat je aandacht van de weg houdt. Dat is niet erg veilig. Dus daar kan je beter niet mee naar huis rijden. Bijna aan het einde van onze route had je lampen die waren afgekeken van een boom. Maar het waren eigenlijk stammen met een lamp en daaromheen ijzeren krullen. Dat was van kunstenares Lucie Jansen en heet Recycle nature. Zij had ook een lamp met een rendierenvel eromheen. Dat vond ik niet zo mooi. Toen we naar huis wilden, zag ik dat er buiten ook een keukentje was waar ze pannenkoeken bakten. Helaas waren ze nog niet klaar. Door Rutger (8) Liam Young, London based designer, futurist, and techno visionary is presenting his newest collaborative project, Under Tomorrow s Sky at MU in Eindhoven. It s not the typical dystopia/utopia project, but instead it s a vast look into a wondrous future, a magical place with a power to seduce people in what s to come By Ja s on age What is your role in the design world? We exaggerate the present so we can imagine the implications and consequences of what we re doing. Take stem cell research for instance. eople debate, should we make it legal or not, but as a culture we have no history or bearing why we should make one decision or the other. How can we make up our minds? So we re forced into decisions based on some arbitrary idea of ethics or morals, ridiculous ideas of religion and spirituality like, when does life begin? These are the questions we re asking ourselves. The role of a speculative project like Under Tomorrow Sky can be; take the premise of stem cell research and imagine a series of scenarios, positive and negative about what could happen, and present it in a way that the public can engage with and connect to, and form emotion reactions to. Then they can actually start to make a much more informed and critical decision about whether this is something that as a culture we want to be doing. That s critical design at its core, to instigate conversation. Why is optimism so important? I m an optimist man. I m a techno optimist. Technology is going to save the world! And destroy it at the same time. Virilio says that with technology comes the accident, that they re inseparable. Instead, we need to learn to relate to the accident in a new way and not see it as a surprise. I mean, Chernobyl is still fucked up, but if we had a different relationship to what it meant, in terms of it being an accident or inevitable part of the process of development, I think we would have a different cultural sense of what it is now. What s missing in The Scene? Ideology! There s a general apathy and disengagement, which hopefully is beginning to change. Things like the crisis have meant that people are starting to go, What the fuck, maybe there s a different way of doing things. The most exciting thing for me in design in the past few years has been The Occupy Movement. It s people that have said, maybe there s a way beyond capitalism. They were developing a new value system, creating libraries, having conversations. That was a prototyping of a new form of culture that existed outside of capital. After all the shit that happens, we need big visions and bold gestures, not small subtle protests. Hopefully we re going to get it! What is the boldness of Eindhoven? I haven t seen enough of Dutch Design Week to know, but I think it s a place where interesting things are going to happen. In my London studio, it s small and shit, and it s super expensive, and the nature of what I produce is somehow determined by what that studio is. But in Eindhoven, it s like Berlin in the 90 s, there s enough space for people to do interesting things without having to worry about the money to pay for it and there s interesting people to do interesting things in those spaces. Or they just design a new fucking chair. I haven t been to see the graduation show, but I reckon there are a few chairs in there and I reckon that my life isn t going to be different because of any one of them. Trudo vormt het om tot het bruisende, creatieve hart van Brainport. StrijpS wordt een gebied waar alles draait om verbindingen. tussen oud en nieuw. Tussen technologie, design, kunst en cultuur. Tussen wonen en werken, leisure, retail en horeca. Hier vinden incubators, startende en bewezen ondernemers elkaar. Hier ontstaan vernieuwende woonconcepten, bijzondere retailformules, verrassende horecainitiatieven. Hier bloeien events met nationale en internationale impact. Innovatieve cultuurmakers, urban sporters en dancers laten dit domein bruisen. StrijpS groeit. Ogenschijnlijk als vanzelf, maar in feite strak geprogrammeerd om het beoogde DNA van dit stadsdeel te versterken. Old Buildings, New Ideas. They might be yours! StrijpS is een bijzondere plek om te wonen en te werken. Waar je s avonds lekker uit eten gaat en een borrel drinkt. Maar een dynamische, hoogstedelijke omgeving vraagt ook overdag om röring. En dus halen we hier leuke winkeltjes naartoe. Verrassende boetieks, spannende galerietjes, speciaalzaakjes en andere retailconcepten die veel publiek op de been brengen. Elke dag weer. Bruisende plint We vullen de plinten van de oude fabrieken en de nog te realiseren nieuwbouw met functies die voor een gezellige levendigheid zorgen, van s ochtends vroeg tot s avonds laat. Museale en culturele functies, horeca en leisure. Maar ook veel bijzondere winkels. Voor mensen die hier wonen en werken. Maar vooral voor shoppers die op zoek zijn naar wat je nergens anders vindt! Alleen wat anders is Ook hier houdt Trudo zorgvuldig de vinger aan de pols wat betreft programmering. Winkels uit de binnenstadzie je hier niet terug.omdat we niet willen concurreren met de stad, maar vooral omdat ook het winkelaanbod moet bijdragen aan het unieke karakter van StrijpS. We gaan voor aparte, bijzondere retailconcepten.one of a kind. Met de nadruk op design en kunst. Maar ook selfmade, gezondheid, eco, vintage wellicht. Zaakjes die je elders niet vindt. Kleine winkeltjes bij voorkeur, hoewel ook een prestigieuze brandstore hier een prima plek kan vinden. Tryouts in de Urban Shopper Geen winkels zonder traffic. Maar geen traffic zonder winkels. Dat lastige dilemma doorbreken we op StrijpS met de Urban Shopper. Op de begane grond van de oude fabriek Anton maken we een gigantische hal vrij van zo n m². In die hal plaatsen we heel basale faciliteiten voor ondernemers. Marktkramen, containers, houten stellages en hokjes Ruimtes van pakweg 20 m². Zo ontstaat een gezellige, levendige markthal. Een soukop StrijpS! In de Urban Shopper kun je als ondernemer je bijzondere, unieke concept presenteren. Zie het als een proeftuin om een retailballetjeop te gooien. Zonder risico s, zonder investering. Je hoeft immers maar 20 tot 25 m 2 te huren. En mocht blijken dat je niet op je plek zit, dan heb je de huur binnen een maand opgezegd. Gaat je zaakje lopen, dan kun je na een jaar of twee doorschuiven naar een ruimte op de begane grond van de Kashba. Of ergens anders, bijvoorbeeld in de plint van de Apparatenfabriek, Anton of Gerard. roef het in de Foodcourt Eenzelfde soort markthal, zoals je die in mediterrane landen aantreft, realiseren we onder in het Veemgebouw. Hier komt een gigantisch foodcourt. Geen gewone supermarkt (al kunnen bewoners hier ook hun dagelijkse boodschappen doen), maar een culinaire hotspot waar het accent ligt op vers, ruiken en proeven. Met een uniek aanbod van regionale, seizoensgebonden producten. Verse pasta s, exotische kruiden, tapas, het beste vlees, de verste vis, oesters, bijzondere champagnes, biologische topwijnen, ambachtelijk bier, kaas, noten, zuidvruchten Hier ga je naartoe als je goede vrienden te eten krijgt. Of om even te proeven, een espresso te drinken, een kaasje uit te proberen. Het foodcourt is een aantrekkelijke plek om als ondernemer je producten aan de man te brengen. In een klein stalletje, tegen een zeer scherpe prijs. Ideaal voor een boerderijwinkel. Voor een topslager, de beste bakker, de groenste groenteboer. Misschien wel als tweede vestiging, naast je winkel in de stad, waar je je exclusieve hammen uitstalt, je lekkerste salades, je meest bijzondere kazen en wijnen. Wil je ondernemen op StrijpS?
