Facebook: Cover Boudewijn Bollmann. Ooit heb ik een interieur gemaakt van gerecycled karton. Het belandde meteen op blogs als duurzaam en ecologisch design. Onzin, vond ik zelf, want na een paar jaar gaat het de prullenbak in of de oudpapierbak. In mijn beleving is iets pas duurzaam wanneer je het nooit meer wegdoet. Natuurlijk zijn er grote problemen op te lossen. Toen ik vorig jaar met Kiki een jungletocht in Laos maakte, schrok ik van de enorme ontbossing. Vooral veroorzaakt door lokale bewoners die hout nodig hadden om te koken en de verwarming van hun huis. Gisteren presenteerde Bertus Fridael een houtgasfornuis waarin 95 procent van de energie in het hout benut wordt. Dát is bijzonder design. Sociaal, efficiënt, en vooral: echt duurzaam. But don t expect a classic production plant CFabriek is presenting an interactive exhibition of homemade machinery and the objects they produce. The collective is formed of young designers and graduates from Design Academy Eindhoven, who have created sheer dresses, food and takehome shoes. The Sunday night opening allows visitors to see each designer demonstrate their production line, and a chance to visit the projects individually throughout the week. Like Objects for Sale on Saturday night, the designers are interested in transcending the handsoff process and getting involved in each stage of the product s manufacture. However, unlike that other young collective, CFabriek is mostly occupied with the machines of miniature consumption, rather than their price. This is where the visitor has a chance to get involved, and an attraction that promises to make the exhibition fun. Visitors are invited to watch Thomas Vailly create pastel plastic shapes with latex stretched between hoops and a former pastry chef blow sugar bowls. Other projects, like Juan Montero s Elements of Time, play with the concept of manufacturing itself, creating a clocklike machine that both produces ceramics and destroys them. The designers say they re suggesting industrialization and consumption. And while these tiny factories might not be opening up shop any time soon, it s refreshing to see young designers questioning and experimenting with the space between the handmade and the mass market. 02 ddw today

3 poly dome except intim acy w hite Studio roosega a r de Future Concepts: Dutch Design Awards en ontwerp voor een betere toekomst Met Future Concepts wil Dutch Design Awards (DDA) zowel het verbeelden van als het denken en spreken over de toekomst toevoegen aan het designwerkveld. Hierdoor moeten belangrijke visies ontstaan waardoor duidelijk wordt welke koers we als mensheid en specifiek in Nederland zullen moeten varen. Dit discours is relevant voor de kwaliteit van innovatie, de inzet van nieuwe technologie en producten, en voor sociale behoeften en vernieuwingen in maatschappelijke voorzieningen en systemen. Relevante producten en diensten die bijdragen aan de kwaliteit van leven staan steeds meer centraal. Het ontwikkelen van een toekomstvisie vraagt verbeeldingskracht en het vermogen zich te verplaatsen in de gebruiker. Dit is de kracht van Nederlandse ontwerpers en dat maakt hen tot belangrijke innovatiepartners. DDA wil een rol spelen bij het maximaliseren van de vernieuwingskracht van Nederland door het discours aan te voeren en een podium te bieden; verder door het stimuleren van ontwerpers die de wereld kunnen, moeten en willen verbeteren. Wij willen deze vernieuwers ondersteunen in hun missie ons te overtuigen van deze betere toekomst. Dit doen we door Future Concepts tijdens Dutch Design Week in de tentoonstelling op te nemen en bij de prijsuitreiking Keynotes & Awards tot rode draad te maken. In deze tentoonstelling zijn concepten en modellen te zien die een belofte voor de toekomst inhouden: een nieuwe visie op mobiliteit, techniek, architectonische constructies, het verbouwen van voedsel, et cetera. Een commissie bestaande uit designers, wetenschappers, architecten en kunstenaars heeft een aantal projecten geselecteerd als Future Concept: Smart Highway van Studio Roosegaarde plaatst de snelweg zoals we deze kennen in een nieuw perspectief. Met diverse duurzame technologieën kan stroom opgewekt worden tijdens het autorijden. Door deze stroom om te zetten in verlichting of te gebruiken voor het opladen van elektrische auto s in de file, ontstaat een multifunctionele snelweg. Het inzetten van hout voor flexibele architectonische constructies, die aan te passen zijn aan de behoefte, dat is waar het project Uitbreiding Brede School De Kikker van Dok architecten om draait. In Intimacy van Studio Roosegaarde is techniek gekoppeld aan een menselijke eigenschap: intimiteit. De hightech kleding wordt transparant door hartslag, aanraking of stemgeluid. Door een optimale afstemming van temperatuur, luchtvochtigheid, voeding, licht en CO2 in een afgesloten ruimte, kan de oogst van gewassen verdubbeld worden ten opzichte van het telen van planten in een plantenkas. Deze nieuwe teeltmethode, Urban Horticulture, is ontwikkeld door lantlab. olydome, van het onderzoek en adviesbureau Except, is een polyculturen landbouwkas, gebaseerd op een natuurlijk ecosysteem, dat per definitie uit meerdere gewassen en organismen bestaat. Dit leidt tot een minder milieubelastende manier van landbouw. Gebakken Land is een concept van Irene Fortuyn en Ketter & Co om de ruimtelijke en cultuurhistorische kwaliteiten van een voormalig agrarisch gebied te bewaren. Door vorm te geven aan de bestaande kwaliteiten van het gebied wordt de geschiedenis van de plaats zichtbaar gemaakt. Koert van Mensvoort en Raymond Ong laten zien dat er een nieuwe vorm van natuur is ontstaan door menselijk handelen. In het boek Next Nature beschrijft Van Mensvoort hoe technologie onze opvatting van natuur is gaan beïnvloeden. Bij het Rayfishproject, dat besproken wordt in dit boek, is design ingezet om de toekomst van technologie tastbaar te maken voor het grote publiek. Designers kunnen een ontwerp voor een sneaker van roggenhuid inzenden op de bijbehorende website. Du t ch De sign Awa r d s Dutch Design Awards (DDA) zijn internationaal gerenommeerde prijzen voor het beste op het gebied van Nederlandse vormgeving. De prijsuitreiking, een tentoonstelling met het werk van alle finalisten tijdens Dutch Design Week en de uitgave van het Dutch Design Jaarboek (in samenwerking met nai010 uitgevers), vormen samen een platform voor Dutch design in de volle breedte. Als een van de weinige designers heeft Hans gestudeerd aan de Royal College of Art in Londen. En of ze nu unica maakt of een stoel voor Cappellini, haar ontwerpen zijn onconventioneel en zeer eigen. In de Ontdekfabriek, een oude werkplaats in de Area Strijp, is een grote ontdekkingsruimte voor kinderen. Ze kunnen hier samen met hun ouders uitvindingen bouwen, een filmpje kijken, plaatsnemen in een vliegmachine en nog veel meer. en verbinden. Die toont een schoonheidssalon met onder andere een strijkplank als rugsteun, een strijkbout en tennisracket voor de manicure, en een dinosaurus voor de pedicure. Ze laten kunstwerken van spaghetti en klei zien, klimmen in een grote ijzeren dolfijn en vertellen dat ze hier ook al eens mooie vogels van piepschuim hebben gemaakt. De Trekin is een innovatief en eigentijds ontwerp met het archetype van een tent, dat veel mensen een gevoel van herkenning zal geven. In de uitwerking is gezocht naar de balans tussen het bieden van bescherming en geborgenheid, wat past bij de verblijfsfunctie, en het genieten van de omgeving, de natuurlijke omgeving waarin de Trekin geplaatst zal worden. Deze duurzame trekkershut is gebouwd van sloophout en andere duurzame materialen volgens het cradletocradleprincipe, en ontworpen door studenten bouwkunde. Van 20 t/m 28 oktober zijn er op de TU/ecampus verschillende exposities, die een bijzondere mix van innovatiekracht en technologie laten zien en de bezoeker uitnodigen tot exploratie. De ambitie van de stad Eindhoven de stad van kennis, technologie en design is goed terug te vinden in verschillende projecten in en rond de TU/ecampus. Een must see, niet alleen voor alle in design geïnteresseerden, maar ook voor wetenschappers en bedrijven. Design op zijn best prikkelt gebruikers, onderzoekers en ondernemingen tot een gezamenlijke visie op de samenleving van de toekomst. De faculteit Industrial Design en Studium Generale hebben op diverse locaties meerdere activiteiten tijdens Dutch Design Week, zoals het Concept Lab, de Nano Supermarket, Ankaralichtinstallaties, Wearable Senses, Design Cares en het Smart Design aviljoen. In Urbanisms of Inclusion staan onderwerpen centraal die de globale urbanisatie en de aanpassing van de steden daaraan begeleiden. Daarbij valt te denken aan migratie op landelijke schaal. De tentoonstelling is dagelijks te zien op laza Vertigo op de TU/ecampus. Deze tentoonstelling vertelt over designpioniers Jan Slothouber en William Graatsma, die vanaf halverwege de jaren vijftig werkten voor DSM. Zij waren verantwoordelijk voor de promotie van een nieuw product: plastic. Al doende bedachten ze het corporate image van DSM. Ze leverden in 1970 de Nederlandse bijdrage aan de biënnale van Venetië. Terugblikkend bezitten de ontwerpen van toen een opvallende actualiteitswaarde. In de jaren zeventig begonnen ze als lector en wetenschappelijk medewerker bouwkunde TU Eindhoven en zetten ze het vak vormleer op voor de jonge faculteit. De expositie geeft inzicht in de samenhang tussen vormleer en de ontwerpen die ze als vormgevers ontwikkelden in hun Centrum voor Cubische Constructies (CCC). Goed innovatief ontwerp draagt bij aan welvaart en welzijn. De drie universitaire opleidingen industrieel ontwerpen uit Delft, Eindhoven en Twente laten zien hoe samenwerking tussen industrie en universiteit leidt tot waardevolle producten en diensten voor de samenleving van morgen. De tentoonstelling Design Changes laat met de thema s health, mobility en work een mix zien van direct te beproeven prototypes tot uitdagende scenario s en concepten. Alleen staan er in plaats van konijntjes of autootjes zestig beroemde Nederlandse ontwerpen op, van dertig even fameuze Nederlandse ontwerpers. Design Memory is een initiatief van Bis ublishers; remsela, Nederlands Instituut voor Design en Mode; en ABN AMRO. Het spel werd zaterdag gepresenteerd in het Designhuis door middel van het spelen van het spel op reuzenformaat. Uiteindelijke winnaar was Ilona Roolvink van ABN AMRO, die de ontwerpen van de euro blindelings wist te vinden. Hier ontstaan vernieuwende woonconcepten, bijzondere retailformules, verrassende horecainitiatieven. Hier bloeien events met nationale en internationale impact. Innovatieve cultuurmakers, urban sporters en dancers laten dit domein bruisen. StrijpS groeit. Ogenschijnlijk als vanzelf, maar in feite strak geprogrammeerd om het beoogde DNA van dit stadsdeel te versterken. Old Buildings, New Ideas. They might be yours! Dat je voor DDW in Eindhoven bent, is niet toevallig. Technologische innovatie, design en ondernemerschap zit al meer dan een eeuw in de genen van deze regio. Denk aan DAF en hilips. Aan VDL, ASML, Neways. Zowel de TU/e als Fontys Hogeschool gooit hoge ogen met Industrial Design. De Design Academy behoort tot de absolute wereldtop. Om dat DNA te behouden en te versterken biedt Trudo ondernemers die zich bewegen op het snijvlak van creativiteit, technologie en design, alle ruimte op StrijpS. In het hart van the smartest region of the world. Jarenlang had Eindhoven noch de faciliteiten noch het klimaat om jonge startende ondernemers in de creatieve/ technische industrie aan zich te binden. We zagen ze met lede ogen vertrekken naar de Randstad. Maar de tijden zijn veranderd en Eindhoven is hot! En dat is voor een groot deel te danken aan het inspirerende netwerk dat zich op StrijpS weeft. Op StrijpS ontstaan verbindingen, weten creatieven, designers en techneuten elkaar in vruchtbare samenwerkingsvormen te vinden. Hier geen cultuur van concurrentie, maar van synergie. Tussen starters, jonge honden onderling. Maar evenzeer tussen gevestigde bedrijven en incubators die van en met elkaar willen leren en vernieuwen. Van tien tot duizend meter In het Klokgebouw en de Apparatenfabriek verhuren we ateliers en werkruimten aan zowel startende als gearriveerde ondernemers. Aan zzp ers, creatieve duo s, goed geoliede teams van tientallen medewerkers. Gigantische aantallen meters die in no time zijn verhuurd. Van een enkele werkplek van 10 m² tot een hele vleugel van meer dan 1000 m². Voor zeer scherpe prijzen, variërend van 35 tot zo n 110 per vierkante meter. er jaar! De een werkt heel basic en efficiënt. Andere huurders maken hun domein met respect voor de industriële historie en veel gevoel voor design tot een architectonische blikvanger. Vruchtbare verbindingen Architecten, ontwerpers, kunstenaars, reclamemakers, marketeers, adviesbureaus, cultuur en modemakers, technologen, food designers, kunstenaars, boekenmakers Ze vinden elkaar op StrijpS. Of op StrijpT aan de overkant van de ring, waar de nadruk meer ligt op het maken. Hier wordt geboord en gezaagd, gelast, gesneden, genaaid en getimmerd. In de studio van Kiki & Joost en de ateliers van Ontwerpduo en Ontwerpstudio 5 bijvoorbeeld. Aangrenzend vind je het domein van iet Hein Eek, dat zich in sneltreinvaart heeft ontwikkeld tot hotspot van design en daarmee samenhangende evenementen (en lekker eten en drinken!). It happens here! In deze omgeving, waar ondernemers over hun eigen schaduw stappen om samen vernieuwende ideeën en concepten te ontwikkelen, heeft designplatform Capital D zich als vanzelfsprekend gevestigd. Evenzo CLICK/NL, landelijke netwerkorganisatie voor de creatieve industrie. Ze kiezen bewust voor de creatieve, borrelende melting pot van StrijpS. Omdat het hier gebeurt!
