Facebook: For nine days a year, I swap my honourable position of director of DDW for something even more beautiful: acting as host to thousands of visitors and an equally impressive number of designers who present either their finalised work or work in the making. Dutch design is often about experimenting and finding new ways. The festival attempts to do the same. At this very moment, you are holding one of the results thereof in your hands: for the first time, our editors offer you a daily tabloid. A proud host, I bid you welcome, and I wish all participants and visitors a pleasant stay in both the community and the country of Dutch design. Negen dagen per jaar verruil ik de eervolle functie als directeur van DDW voor iets nog mooiers: het gastheerschap voor duizenden bezoekers en een al even indrukwekkend aantal ontwerpers die hun werk of werk in wording presenteren. Dutch design gaat vaak over experimenteren en het zoeken van nieuwe wegen. Het festival probeert hetzelfde te doen; een van de vruchten daarvan voor het eerst maken we elke dag een tabloid hebt u nu in handen. Frame ick of the Day Obj ec t s for Sa l e To start off Dutch Design Week, Frame recommends spending Saturday evening at Objects for Sale, where the designers have produced bowls, scarves, and furniture that visitors can actually afford to take home. Objects for Sale is the third annual exhibit by a collective of young designers. Last year s show, Objects Rescoped focused on reimagining the uses of everyday items, and was a great success. This year the designers have flipped the concept around, examining production, and the impact of method and material on an object s price and the results are sure to be just as exciting. The manufacturing process expands the designer s role, challenging them to create items that are produced and priced for everyday use. Young designers who are involved in every step of the production of their own work is a running theme on opening weekend on Sunday, designers at CFabriek will show simple machines they ve constructed to produce their designs. With items in three price ranges from under 50 to over 500 it s also a chance for the discriminating Dutch Design Week visitor to pick up souvenirs. We re particularly excited to sweep up the simple, quirky rings cut from euro coins by Lex ott, a best known for his oxidized mirrors and metal furniture. Other highlights include Marcia Nolte s brightly coloured leather wallets, David Derksen s flask inspired lamps, and porcelain by De Intuitiefabriek. 3 M eet ou r a m ba ssa d or s K i k i va n Eijk en Jo ost va n Bl eisw i j k Robert Bron wa sser Ontwerpers verkopen hier meer dan hun product Niet sexy, wel nodig: gewone, dagelijkse spullen ontwerpen Al pionierend gaven Kiki en Joost niet alleen hun eigen werk vorm, maar ook DDW in Eindhoven. Ruim tien jaar geleden kraakten ze zich naar binnen in garages en fabrieken en organiseerden hun eigen shows en feesten tijdens de designweek. Inmiddels staat DDW bekend om dat openstudiogevoel. Juist dat willen zij aanmoedigen als ambassadeurs van de week. We dragen DDW een warm hart toe. We willen vooral de kracht van zelfinitiërend ontwerp een boost geven. Ontwerpers moeten op zoek naar hun eigen identiteit. Voor ons is het belangrijk om de dingen niet te veel aan te harken, maar ruimte te laten voor pioniersdrang en creativiteit. Hij is industrieel ontwerper in hart en nieren. In zijn werk speelt de eindgebruiker altijd de belangrijkste rol. Daarom staat Robert Bronwasser graag zelf met zijn werk op DDW: om mensen zijn werk te laten ervaren en om feedback te krijgen. Als ambassadeur van de week wil hij het spotlicht zetten op wat vergeten lijkt: het industrieel ontwerpen van gewone, dagelijkse dingen. De stroming Dutch design heeft Nederlands ontwerp in de jaren negentig stevig op de kaart gezet en daar profiteren we allemaal van. Maar het lijkt wel eens of we vergeten zijn dat er ook een grote groep mensen en bedrijven bestaat die bezig is gewone producten te verbeteren en innoveren. 4 Linoleum van slakkenpoep, een servies dat zonneenergie opwekt, lampen uit biomassa en zwarte diamanten uit koolstof. De DOEN Materiaalprijs beloont tijdens DDW voor de vierde keer innovatie en onderzoek naar duurzame nieuwe materialen. Niet alleen ontwerp, concept of vorm is tijdens Dutch Design Week van belang, ook het materiaal krijgt speciale aandacht. De DOEN Materiaalprijs, die vandaag wordt uitgereikt en waarvan tijdens de hele Dutch Design Week een expositie te zien is in het Van Abbemuseum, draait helemaal om materiaal. Het lijkt op het eerste gezicht niet sexy, een prijs die puur vakinhoudelijk is. Toch laat de overzichtstentoonstelling in het Van Abbemuseum met de selectie van dit jaar zien dat materiaalonderzoek wel degelijk aansprekende resultaten oplevert. Een uiteenlopende, kleurrijke mix van materialen: keramiek, hout, kunststof, papier en textiel, van aardetinten tot heldere kleuren. Sommige ontwerpen zijn bij wijze van spreken klaar om in productie te worden genomen, andere zijn meer een aanzet tot verder onderzoek. Het fenomeen is uniek: een prijs die niet draait om het ontwerp alleen, maar die juist de zoektocht van kunstenaars en designers naar nieuw, duurzaam en innovatief materiaal beloont. De prijs is een pleidooi voor vrij onderzoek binnen kunst en design. Het vrije experiment, onderzoek zonder dat de uitkomst van tevoren bekend is, waarbij het proces het belangrijkste is en waarbij innovatie minstens zo belangrijk is als esthetiek, dat willen we met de DOEN Materiaalprijs stimuleren, legt directeur Francine Mendelaar van het Materiaalfonds uit, een van de initiatiefnemers van de prijs. Dat maakt de prijs volgens haar buitengewoon toegankelijk. Het draait niet alleen om kantenklare producten, maar er wordt ook gekeken naar de potentie. 0 4 ddw t oday

Het Materiaalfonds biedt beeldend kunstenaars, vormgevers, modeontwerpers en architecten de mogelijkheid een renteloze lening af te sluiten voor een artistiek project of creatieve productie, om nieuwe ontwikkelingen en materiaalonderzoek te stimuleren. Stichting DOEN wordt gefinancierd door onder meer de BankGiro Loterij en stimuleert mensen en bedrijven die het voortouw nemen op het gebied van duurzame, culturele en sociale vernieuwing. Binnen het spectrum van design en duurzaamheidprijzen die Nederland kent, neemt de DOEN Materiaalprijs sindsdien een geheel eigen positie in. Juist in tijden van bezuinigingen en verschraling blijft dat experiment erg belangrijk. Aan het werk van de genomineerden is te zien dat het aan innovatiedrang niet ontbreekt. Zo is er van Marjan van Aubel The Energy Collection, een glazen servies met zonnecellen dat energie opwekt. En de collectie 6:1 van Kristie van Noort, die ons confronteert met het afval dat bij de productie van porselein overblijft, wat de kunstenares weer in servies verwerkt. Twee soorten werk waarbij in het materiaal zelf veel reflectie verborgen zit. Joined Forces van Tristan Frencken is een knalroze kruk, ontstaan uit een materiaalstudie naar natuurlijke vezels en hars. De diamanten sieraden van Gitte Nygaard zijn gemaakt van binchotan (witte houtskool), en The Layer Chair van Jorrit Taekema is opgebouwd uit kokosvezels (een restproduct uit de kokosindustrie) en latex. Een commissie met daarin Max Bruinsma (onafhankelijk kunstcriticus en hoofdredacteur Items); Aart van Bezooyen (oprichter en directeur van Material Stories); Tjeerd Veenhoven (winnaar aanmoedigingsprijs DOEN Materiaalprijs 2011); Arjen Bangma (directeur Transnatural Arts, Research & (future) Design); en Joanna van der Zanden (curator en artistiek directeur Rotterdam designprijs) selecteerde uit de inzendingen dit jaar waren het er 77 een shortlist van 18 genomineerden. De inzendingen worden beoordeeld op basis van duurzaamheid, innovatie, artisticiteit, kwaliteit, praktische toepassingsmogelijkheden en originaliteit. Vervolgens wordt de winnaar bepaald door de jury, die dit jaar bestond uit Guus Beumer (directeur NAi), Thomas Rau (duurzaam architect), en Wieki Somers (ontwerper), met (wederom) Max Bruinsma als extern voorzitter. De DOEN Materiaalprijs bestaat uit twee delen: een bedrag van euro voor een afgerond ontwerp en een prijs van 5000 euro voor een concept dat nog verdere uitdieping behoeft. Naast de kans op de geldbedragen biedt de prijs voor de deelnemende kunstenaars en ontwerpers een hoge publicitaire waarde, plus de overzichtsexpositie in het Van Abbemuseum. Volgend jaar wordt er voor het eerst in de traditie van de DOEN Materiaalprijs geen prijs uitgereikt, maar is er ter ere van het vijfjarig jubileum een grote overzichtstentoonstelling met alle winnaars en toonaangevende genomineerden van de afgelopen vijf jaar. Maar zover is het nog niet; eerst horen vandaag de kanshebbers van 2012 of het door hen met zoveel liefde en toewijding ontwikkelde materiaal in de prijzen is gevallen. Niet alleen zijn de landen belangrijke handelspartners, ook op cultureel en maatschappelijk vlak zijn de banden sterk. Dat is zeer uitzonderlijk en mag dus gevierd worden! Gelukkig is er tussen de feestelijkheden in dit jubileumjaar door ook serieuze aandacht voor de toekomst. In deze veranderlijke wereld vol vraagstukken rond globalisering en kleinschaligheid, mobiliteit en internet, consumptie en schaarste, individualisme en solidariteit, moet de blik vooruit om tot nieuwe inzichten en constructieve oplossingen te komen. De gloednieuwe, vierde editie van het jaarlijkse Trend Book is een sprekend voorbeeld van ons gezamenlijke oog op en voor de toekomst. Dit platform voor communicatie en raamwerk voor uitwisseling van ideeën, kwam tot stand in een samenwerking tussen de regio s Istanbul (Turkije) en Brainport (Nederland). Vanuit het thema Glocalisation = Smart Society = Wegeneration blikken ambassadeurs uit beide landen vooruit op aanstaande trends, ontwikkelingen en innovatie. Curator en trendwatcher Zuzanna Skalska verdeelde de visies over zes onderwerpen (of: raakvlakken) die beide regio s delen en met elkaar verbinden: Farming, Wellbeing, Technology, Environment, Crafts en Local. Dutch Design Week en Istanbul Design Week (sinds dit jaar officieel partners) zijn verheugd met het resultaat waaruit de economische en creatieve potentie van onze regio s duidelijk naar voren komt.
