And this one is really a hot one. With the airconditioning at full speed, I am finalizing this last Kramiek before the traditional July-August summer break. The first months of this year have been active ones for the BCT, and testimonies of these events are to be found in this Kramiek. The summer months (the European ones, that is) are traditionally a quiet period for the BCT. The return in September is the moment to gear up in full speed for the year end, with the traditional Annual Dinner and election of a new committee. Stay cool and enjoy this Kramiek. Peter Cauwelier

Letter of the President Good morning steaming Bangkok!!!! Yes, we are in the middle of what some travel guides call, the very hot and humid season, and although a lot of people seemed to be slowed down by the heat, others have been boosting with energy. The BCT is one of the latter ones and a lot of activities have been organized in the last couple of months. Look at two trips to the North-East, the charity sale, the Easter egg hunt, the get-togethers in the Landmark, For April indeed there were no special activities but this is due to the holidays at the different schools, which added together, took up the whole month. Don t forget, coming up are: the chicon evening, another football game, this time against the French, and maybe some other events that can be organized in a short time. News from the homefront - what you probably haven t read in the Bangkok Post The Belgian Franc is now history. The total cost of the switch to the Euro amounts to 125 million Euros for the National Bank. Private companies estimate the cost at 3% of their turnover. About 10% of banknotes have not yet been exchanged. Adding the value of the coins, this amounts to 160 million Euros. The Belgian Franc was established on January 1 st 1833 as official currency of independent Belgium, at that moment replacing the Dutch Guilder. Between 1865 and 1925, the value of the Franc was paired with the French and other currencies, as part of the Latin Monetary Union. In the 1930 s, the Franc coexisted with the Belga, which was equivalent to 5 Francs. In October 1944, additional money was printed to stop the war inflation, and the value of the Belgian Franc was made equivalent to that of the Luxembourgh Franc. The police in Bruges has stopped the Mercedes of Prince Laurent when he was driving at 137 km/h at the Cartreuseweg, where the maximum speed is limited at 70 km/h. The car was forced to stop but the Prince, who knows his rights, referred to his immunity and was therefore released. The number of cremations has increased dramatically in Belgium. In 2001, 36,785 deceased, or around one in three, have been cremated. At the end of the 70 s, only 4% of deceased were cremated. One of the new metrostations in Brussels has been called Eddy Merckx. The station, on the line 1B to Anderlecht, will also display the bicycle with which Merckx set his world hour record in 1972. 2001 registered an 11% increase in calls to the Drugs Call Center. Mostly worried parents enquire about drug use. The center states that the increase in the number of calls does not mean that more drugs are being used, but that the problem has become more open to discussion. De 102 Dalmatiers vieren Pasen 2002 Op paaszondag (31 maart), reeds vroeg in de morgen, onder een stralende hemel huppelden de enen na de anderen, naar het Hilton hotel. Iedereen was welkom en de tuin lag er heel rustig bij, elkeen zag er op zijn paasbest uit. Er stond een mooi ontbijt klaar en er was voldoende keuze, verse vruchtensappen, allerlei broodjes, beleg, koffie en thee niets te kort. Groot en klein konden er energie opdoen om dan vanaf 10.30h de grote eierraap te starten. Er was zelfs iets dat moest doorgaan voor de paashaas van de partij, hij leek veeleer op een hamster, maar voor de kinderen was het een echt festijn. Zelfs echte konijntjes en kuikens waren aanwezig. Toen de grote start; mama s, papa s en kinderen zochten overal naar de eieren, en neen hoor ze waren niet weggesmolten door de hitte want ze waren van plastiek, zo, waar lagen dan die 200 eieren verborgen? Door de goede medewerking van de mensen van het hotel, die trouwens de eieren hadden verborgen, hebben we met zijn allen ongeveer de helft van de eieren teruggevonden. De rest.geen idee. Toen de zoektocht werd gestaakt, leek iedereen er uit te zien als een gevlekte hond, het warme weer had ervoor gezocht dat de paasbeste kledij voorzien was van zweetvlekjes, vandaar de 102 dalmatiers, want inderdaad we waren exact met zijn 102en. Bij vertrek kregen de kinderen ditmaal wel echte chocolade en konden ze nog even nagenieten van dit alles. De hele gebeurtenis was een familiaal, leuk, tof en voor herhaling vatbaar verhaal. Thai work permit 1 +1 copy ii. Residence permit of non-immigrant visa + 1 copy iii. Re-entry visa for Thailand + 1 copy iv. Certificate of Aliens (if applicable) - Applicants, who are minor, are obliged to submit additional documents: i. birth certificate 1 + 1 copy ii. parental consent, issued by city hall - The validity of short stay visa is no longer than 3 months and the maximum duration of stay cannot exceed 90 days per semester. - The applicant should submit the completed file by himself / herself. - A later change to the purpose of the visit is not admissible. Trip to the Northeast Two trips to the North East were recently organised by Michel Agramme, ably aided by his business sidekick Addison. In both cases the points of focus were ruined temples from the Thai / Khmer era, but the opportunity to get away from the pollution of Bangkok to the fresh open countryside in convivial company, and the benefit of Michel's knowledge and experience of this area, off the normal western tourist route, and his photographer's - eye perception of Thai life and culture, was a not - to - be missed experience. 23 /24 March Eighteen people, prominently Belgians,in two minibuses and a car, took off for the hills. destination, the ancient city of Phimai. En route a prearranged lunch stop in a beautiful setting overlooking a large lake.we picked up a local guide who stayed with us for the rest of the journey and proved a real treasure in giving us a potted history of the region. First in a museum and later at the ancient ruins and surrounding area. Built some 1000 years ago, the restored, largely sandstone, Buddhist temple predates the larger and better known Ankor Wat in nearby Cambodia. A short drive took us to the giant Banyan tree, surely the biggest tree in terms of surface area, that any of us are likely to see. Dinner, composed of local traditional dishes was at a restaurant floating on the Mun River. After that it was off to the city of Khorat and our hotel for the night. On Sunday we made for Khao Yai National Park, but first an interesting diversion led us along primitive country lanes, through villages and hamlets unseen by the average tourist, to a monastery housing a reclining Buddha of similar age to the ruined Khmer temple. This roughly carved sandstone statue, showing centuries of natural erosion, was in the course of being protected at last from the elements in a brick and asbestos shelter, which seemed curiously inappropriate. The compound itself contained other insights into monastic life, a decorative crematorium, temple and various species of tree not seen in public places. And so on to Khao Yai and the useful revelation that, if you are persuasive enough, a Thai driving licence can be a passport for the Thai entry fee. The park resembles those in the US, well made roads with walking trails and strategically placed information boards. Our first venture into the jungle was a bit disappointing. We saw a few butterflies but none of the larger creatures for which this park is renowned. So, with the thought that interesting animals come out at dusk, we turned our attentions to a late lunch close to the waterfall site of Leonardo Dicaprio's memorable leap in the film "The Beach". As the afternoon drew to a close we drove towards a high point from which to watch the sunset. Suddenly there were monkeys everywhere beside the road and rounding a bend, we came across a small herd of wild elephants who charged into the forest, fortunately close to a clearing with a steeply ascending walking trail. This proved an excellent vantage point from which to watch the elephants feeding. A fascinating experience which enthralled the whole party until darkness fell. There were no complaints when we rolled into Bangkok several hours behind schedule.

6th / 7th April Being the "Chakri Weekend"and arranged rather hastily, it was perhaps not unexpected that few club members could participate. So it was just 12 people, but five nationalities, in one minibus who set off to follow the Cambodian border towards the ancient Khmer temple of Pasat Phanom Rung. The journey took most of the day, with a lunch break on the eastern extremity of Khao Yai National Park. Further along the road Addison was in home territory and arranged for us to visit a silk weaving company, which to western eyes was somewhat primitive and labour intensive, the workmanship from the dying of the silk to the production of an amazing range of colours and patterns of finished cloth, was truly impressive. the artistic skill of the Thais in traditional crafts never ceases to impress. And so to the Khmer temple, build high on top of extinct volcano, of sandstone and volcanic lava and dedicated to the Hindu god "Shiva". We arrived at 5 p.m., having missed the grand parade but to early for the main event, for this was the annual "son et lumiere"and the spectacle of the enactment of the arrival of Buddha in Siam. So a little careful sightseeing was in order. Careful, because of the hazard of negotiating the immense stone staircase which led steeply up to the sanctuary, was added cables, lighting equipment and other 21st century paraphernalia. As darkness fell we took our seats and the performance began. The initial speeches, and voice - over throughout were beyond the comprehension of most of us but the lighting, costumes, dance sequences, battle scenes, fireworks etc were visually spectacular. After the show, a brief photo session with the dancing girls and then off to the hotel at Surin for a late dinner served as the staff were preparing for Sunday breakfast. After a late night a leisurely start was called for, with a hearty breakfast in anticipation of a late lunch, we headed back to Phanom Rung for a closer look in daylight and a chance to take photos before the multitudes arrived for the second day's performance.first though a stop at Muang Tam, built in about the same time at the base of the volcano. Then we were on the road again following the Cambodian border towards Bangkok. At mid afternoon the pangs of hunger were beginning to be felt with no sign of any reasonable restaurant, but surprisingly, a brief enquiry by Addison in the most unlikely of villages, and suddenly we found ourselves in a wonderful open air restaurant beside a picturesque reservoir. But it was late in the day, no large fish and little food left. But just as Laurent, our four year old human dynamo and owner of a fishing net, was being brief to save the day, it was revealed that Addison's cousin worked at the restaurant and suddenly the table was filled with food fit for a king, including three very large fish beautifully prepared in traditional style. On the road again we visited the frontier post at Arnyaprathet, a bit disappointing in that all that could be seen of Cambodia was a neon sign on a casino several hundred metres away. The market was interesting, though on the verge of closing. And so we returned to Bangkok. Two great trips, well planned and executed. Well done Michel and Addison, you did us proud!

Dat waren de woorden die organisator Steven Vette gebruikte na afloop van de jaarlijkse voetbalwedstrijd tussen de beide landen. Zij wel, wij niet: een beladen begrip sinds Nederland door Ierland de voet werd dwars gezet richting de Wereldkampioenschappen in Japan en Korea deze zomer. België heeft zich wel gekwalificeerd. De lading met name van Nederlandse zijde:

hoe kan het toch dat een elftal met 11 uitstekende spelers zich niet kwalificeert? Omdat het geen team is, aldus de meerderheid der voetbalkenners. Als onze bondscoach op zoek is naar een nieuwe aanpak voor teambuilding, dan doet hij er goed aan om in het vervolg naar de wedstrijd der lage landen te komen kijken. Zoals afgelopen zondag 17 februari: lokatie Patana school ( Sukhumvit Soi 105 ). Hij (in de voetbalwereld heeft de emancipatiekoorts nog niet toegeslagen) zou een hecht Nederlands team hebben gezien, vechtend voor elkaar zoals onze goedbetaalde professionals dat nog nooit hebben gedaan. De nawerking van een geslaagde teambuildingsavond in een Ierse kroeg enige dagen voor de wedstrijd en het feit dat iedereen toch nog nét op tijd voor de wedstrijd aanwezig was, leidden ertoe dat we als een blok stonden en het vuur uit onze sloffen liepen. Helaas bleek dat niet voldoende te zijn voor de overwinning: België was veel meer dan een hecht team. Balvaardig, behendig, snel, goed combinerend en in een puike conditie bracht dit Belgisch team ons de grootste nederlaag toe uit de Thaise geschiedenis van het duel der lage landen: 3-6. Uitblinkers? Ja, 17 Nederlandse (en een dito aantal Belgische ) spelers maar met name onze doelman, Mark de Vries. Hij, en alleen hij, heeft weten te voorkomen dat hier dubbele cijfers achter de streep komen te staan. Een uitslag van 2-13 zou eveneens mogelijk geweest zijn. Zij wel, wij niet. België kon weer beschikken over de Franstalige spelers (en dat is te vergelijken met de zwarte kabel van ons nationaal elftal) én over Georges Grün. Met vakantie in Thailand en uitgenodigd zijn kunsten eens in Bangkok te vertonen. Wie zegt U? Ja, Georges Grün. Hij heeft ons het WK toernooi in Mexico (1986 ) ontnomen. Zij wel, wij niet. Even terug in de historie. In 1985 moeten Nederland en België in 2 onderlinge duels uitmaken wie er naar WK in Mexico mag. Eerste wedstrijd, 16 oktober 1985 in Antwerpen: België wint met 1-0. Wim Kieft krijgt een rode kaart, Frankie Vercauteren maakt het doelpunt. Tweede wedstrijd, 20 november 1985 in de Kuip, Rotterdam: Nederland staat kort voor het eindsignaal met 2-0 voor. Doelpunten van Peter Houtman ( 60e minuut ) en Robbie de Wit (72e minuut ). Het is koud in de Kuip en warm tegelijk: Nederland gaat naat Mexico. Wij wel, zij niet??? Nee dus, daar is dat kleine Belgische manneke dat 5 minuten voor tijd als een duvelke uit een dooske de Belgen naar Mexico kopt: Georges Grün. Zij wel, wij niet. In de eerste helft speelden we met ons gezicht naar de kantine/zwembad. We zien het eten en drinken naar de kantine gaan, we zien in die zengende hitte de kinderen in het zwembad spartelen: dat houdt ons op de been, Ruststand 1-1. Met een doelpunt van René Lammers ( 1-0 ) en van Georges Grün. Veel mooier dan die in 1985 maar evenzo belangrijk. Na de rust: de vermoeidheid slaat toe in het Nederlands team, de techniek neemt zienderogen af maar het team-gevoel is niet kapot te krijgen. Desondanks loopt de tegenstander over ons heen. In een zeer sportieve wedstrijd brengt Andries Bolding ons nog op 2-1 maar dan lopen de Belgen over ons heen: 2-6. Lammers brengt de eindstand op 3-6. Een zeer terechte overwinning van België. Na de tijd dronken we een glas, deden een plas en vergaten wie nou wie ook alweer was. Kortom: een gezellig, gezamenlijke afsluiting van een door Steven Vette uitstekend georganiseerde evenement. Om ons aan te sluiten bij zijn woorden: zij wel, wij niet: wij gunnen van ganser harte België alle succes toe tijdens het komend WK en op onze steun kunnen jullie rekenen En voor de Europese Kampioenschappen van 2004, we hopen dat we kunnen schrijven: Zij en Wij, we waren er allebei bij. Charity Sale voor Armand Laat me beginnen met te zeggen dat dit niet zo een van die leuke aangelegenheden is als bvb Pasen of voetbal of een quiz, maar laat me eraan toevoegen dat het toch veel genoegen schenkt dat er zoveel mensen begaan zijn met het lot van een Belgische 14-jarige jongen die hulp nodig heeft. Dank aan elk ieder die er zijn steentje bijgedragen heeft. Het startsein van dit alles was eigenlijk een oproep vanuit de Belgische Ambassade om een jongen, verlaten door zijn vader, en een moeder die voor hem niet kan zorgen, te helpen omdat ze zelf daar zogenaamd totaal geen budget voor hebben. Hierbij moet ik eigenlijk eerst en vooral Ximena bedanken die de drijvende kracht was achter dit alles en met de ideeen kwam aandraven. Met verenigde krachten hebben we dan op zeer korte termijn deze verkoop georganiseerd. We hebben zoveel mogelijk personen gecontacteerd die iets te verkopen hadden en die in ruil daarvoor een percent van de verkoop hebben afgestaan. Al deze mensen zijn op woensdagmorgen, 20 maart in Baan Suan Maak, met valiezen en dozen vol goederen komen aanzetten en tegen 9.30 am. bruiste de hele vergaderzaal van leven. De meeste kopers waren er heel vroeg bij en er heerste een levendige atmosfeer. Even na de middag zijn we dan terug aan het inpakken geslagen en konden we de afrekening maken en ja hoor, het was een succes geweest, bijna 40,000 baht netto winst, die ondertussen reeds aan het schoolgeld is besteed.
