PROGRAM OBJECTIVES MOMO project (MUMM): MOMO stands for the monitoring and modelling of cohesive sediment transport and the evaluation of the effects on the marine ecosystem due to dredging and dumping operations. The primary objective of the project is the study of the cohesive sediments on the Belgian Continental Shelf (BCS) using numerical models and field measurements. The combination of monitoring and modelling will provide information on the transport processes of this fine fraction and is therefore fundamental to answer questions on composition, origin and residence of it on the BCS, the change in characteristics of this sediment due to dredging and dumping operations, the effects of the natural variability, the impact on the marine ecosystem especially due to alterations of habitats, the estimation of the net input of hazardous substances in the marine environment and the possibilities to reduce these last two items. 4

4. MEASUREMENTS Hydrodynamic measurements - MOMO 1) Moorings The bottom mounted ADCP (moored near the Meetpaal MOW1 ) and the tripode (moored offshore Blankenberge) will be recovered during the first week of the campaign and moored again during the second week of the campaign, see table 1. 2) Through tide measurements and water sampling Two through tide cycle are planned, one starting Monday afternoon (07/04) near MOW1 and one starting Monday early afternoon (14/04) near the dumping site of Oostende. The first cycle should be located as close as possible to the bottom mounted ADCP (see table 1). Water samples with 10l Niskin bottles will be taken every 20 minutes. The carousel is taken slowly on board every hour (in order to measure the vertical profile) and the water is filtered on board for SPM and POC. A Lisst-100C is attached on the Rosette and will be deployed together with the SeaCat. A van Veen sample is taken after/before the through-tide measurement. During the measurements sediment is collected with the centrifuge. 5
