Iets over apposities (bijstellingen) Herman Heringa, syntax seminar 20 maart 2006 Terminologie: appositionele constructie = anker + appositie Paradigma (Acuña-Fariña, 1996): 1. Anne Chapman, the newly hired gynaecologist, (will soon do that job in the firm). Soortnaam + eigennaam: 3. De provincie Gelderland. 4. Reinaert de Vos. Hoeveelheidswoord + substantief 5. Een glas wijn. 6. Een hoop werkvolk. Samenstelling met koppelteken: 7. Het amendement-hartogh. 8. Secretaris-penningmeester. Voornaam + achternaam: 9. Cornelis Tromp. Curme (1931): Predicatief: 10. He (came home) sick. Genitief: 11. The vice of intemperance. 12. The city of Rome. 13. A jewel of a cup. Adjectief: 14. The room above. Meyer (1992): Citaat: 15. ( ) the Newsome report a vital and moving human document - ( ) Opsomming: 16. ( ) three kinds of changes in the soil: physical, biological and chemical ( ) R-Dislocatie: 17. (Well,) it (is a jolly nice place), the university.
Beperkend vs. Uitbreidend Meest gebruikte onderscheid: beperkend (restrictive/close) vs. uitbreidend (nonrestrictive/loose) Komt overeen met criterium van komma(intonatie): 18. Mijn zwager, Hendrik, (is eindelijk getrouwd.) 19. Mijn zwager Hendrik (is eindelijk getrouwd.) * The author of Ulysses Joyce (is buried in Zurich.) 29. * Five poems his complete poetical works (appear in an index.) 30. * Man Homo Sapiens Attributief vs. echt Onderscheid: attributieve/predicatieve apposities/gereduceerde relatiefzinnen vs. echte apposities.
Albert Svensson, a recent winner of the IL state lottery, (has announced that he plans to move to Bermuda.) 36. A recent winner of the IL state lottery, Albert Svensson, (has announced that he plans to move to Bermuda.) (He introduced me to) the young woman, the heir to a fortune. 38. ( I don t know what I would have done if I had seen him, exclaimed) Mary, the prey of violent and obscure emotions. A soldier, a man in uniform, (came in just now.) Pontefract, at that time our best upholsterer, (died at sixty.) 41. Pontefract, not our best upholsterer, (died at sixty.) 42. (They elected as chairman) Edna Jones, also a Cambridge graduate. 43. Jones and Peters, both of unknown address, (were charged with the murder of Williamson.) 44. (At the entrance there are) two pillars, one on each side. 45. The two men, one a Norwegian and the other a Dane, (were awarded medals.) Acuña-Fariña (2000): ook zinsadverbia mogelijk bij echte appositie: 46. The president, currently Bill Clinton, (is the commander in chief of the armed forces.) 47. Three persons, normally Smith, Jones, and Peterson, (attend the meeting.)
50. * (Have you read) his novel, a psychological epic? 51. (Have you read) his novel, his psychological epic? 52. (Sauter is living with his lawyer-wife, Kathleen the daughter of ) Pat Brown and (sister of ) Jerry Brown, both former governors of California. Three persons, Smith, Jones, and Peterson, (attended the meeting.) 57. Three persons (attended the meeting:) Smith, Jones, and Peterson. 58. * Albert Svensson (has announced that he plans to move to Bermuda), a recent winner of the IL state lottery. Echter, Acuña-Fariña (2000): 59. * A recent winner of the IL state lottery (has announced that he plans to move to Bermuda), Albert Svensson. 60. Miles (played very well), the doctor here. An even-tempered man, Paul nevertheless became extremely angry when he heard what had happened. 62. The heir to a fortune, her friend did not care about passing examinations. 63. A millionaire, Pontefract showered Money everywhere. A lazy group, the farmers were poor. 65. A lazy group, the farmers, (was all that remained after the revolution.)
66. Ron Pall, a blatant liar, (used to be in my class at school.) 67. Ron Pall, a blatant liar, was expelled from the group. An unusual present (was given to him for his birthday), a book on ethics. 69. Normal Jones, at one time a law student, (wrote several best-sellers). 70. The reason he gave, that he didn t notice the car till too late, (is unsatisfactory.) You won t be totally alone, that s to say, there ll be others to help you. 72. (He) ran absolutely raced (up the hill.) 73. (They) sent him to Coventry, refused to speak to him. 74. (Under) normal, peacetime, (conditions.) 75. (They met) here, in London. Meyer: De meeste niet-nominale apposities bestaan uit zinnen: 76. I was going to make a very stupid remark. I was going to say that nothing that tastes nice is poisonous.
His only interest in life, playing football, (has brought him many friends.) 78. (She has) a problem: should she charge them for the damage or should she forget about it? 79. Their solution, to appoint a committee, (is deplorable.) 80. For them to pay him a commission his own suggestion (seemed an acceptable idea.) Meyer noemt ook andere voorbeelden: 81. (The occupation of the territory by the colonial power was) wholly indefensible, the wicked work of evil men. 82. (Garret had a wife and four daughters) somewhere, in Worthing or Horsham or Lewes.
