DONDERDAG 10 NOVEMBER 18.00 19.30 UUR PASSCHENDAELE CEREMONY Crest Farm, Canadalaan Passendale Wanneer de Canadezen op 10 november 1917 de puinen van het dorp Passendale innemen, eindigt de Slag van Passendale. Deze slag is één van de gruwelijkste slagen uit de Eerste Wereldoorlog. In 100 dagen vielen meer dan 450 000 slachtoffers voor een terreinverschuiving van slechts acht kilometer. De Passchendaele Ceremony herdenkt het einde van de slag en alle slachtoffers, ongeacht hun nationaliteit. De ceremonie start met een ingetogen reflectie bij het Crest Farm Canadian Memorial, gevolgd door een fakkeltocht langs de Canadalaan. De optocht volgt het traject van de bloedige laatste honderd meter van de aanval en eindigt aan de kerk van Passendale. Na de plechtigheid worden alle deelnemers uitgenodigd op een openluchtreceptie en een concert in de kerk. 20.15 22.00 UUR CONCERT SOME DESPERATE GLORY / IN STAHLGEWITTERN Kerk, Passendale Tickets: 9 VVK - 12 ADD bestellen via webshopzonnebeke.recreatex.be Tijdens de Slag van Passendale vochten de Britse kapitein Edwin Campion Vaughan en de Duitse luitenant Ernst Jünger nagenoeg gelijktijdig aan het front tussen Passendale en Langemark maar wél aan tegengestelde zijde. Aan de hand van hun oorlogsdagboeken Some Desperate Glory en In Stahlgewittern, creëerde The Passchendaele 1917 Orchestra, dit jaar in een Schotse bezetting onder leiding van fiddler Gavin Marwick, een gelijknamig concert. Geïnspireerd door de teksten van beide officieren componeerde de groep een aantal nieuwe stukken voor dit uniek concert.
THURSDAY 10 NOVEMBER 6 P.M. 7.30 P.M. PASSCHENDAELE CEREMONY Crest Farm, Canadalaan Passendale 10 November 1917 marks the day that Canadian troops ended the Battle of Passchendaele by capturing the ruins of the village. The Battle of Passchendaele is known as one of the most horrible battles of WWI: over 450 000 casualties for a frontline movement of only 8 kilometres. The Passchendaele Ceremony commemorates the end of the Battle of Passchendaele and all casualties, communities and countries involved. The ceremony starts with a subdued reflection at the Crest Farm Canadian Memorial followed by a torch parade through the Canadalaan. The parade follows the path of the last hundred metres of the attack and ends at Passchendaele church. After the ceremony all participants will be invited to an open air reception, followed by a concert in the church. 8.15 P.M. 10 P.M. The Scottish group The Passchendaele 1917 Orchestra, this year with Scottish performers led by fiddler Gavin Marwick, used their war journals Some Desperate Glory and In Stahlgewittern to create a unique concert. Inspired by the texts in the journals, they composed new pieces of music for this concert.

Naar aanleiding hiervan organiseert Field Marshal Haig s Own Pipes & Drums in samenwerking met de Black Watch Association, de Gemeente Zonnebeke en het MMP1917, een eenvoudige plechtigheid aan het Black Watch monument. 15.00 UUR HERDENKINGSPLECHTIGHEID VAN DE FRANSE, DUITSE EN ENGELSE AMBASSADES & DE WEST YORKSHIRE POLICE BAND Tyne Cot Cemetery / Vijfwegestraat, Passendale Op wapenstilstand brengen de Franse, Engelse en Duitse ambassades traditiegetrouw samen een bloemenhulde aan de slachtoffers van hun landen. De plechtigheid wordt opgeluisterd door de West Yorkshire Police Band. Deze band vertegenwoordigt het West Yorkshire Police korps en komt op 11 november naar de Westhoek om hun gesneuvelde politiemannen te herdenken. 124 van hen kwamen om in de Eerste Wereldoorlog. 36 werden begraven in België en 5 worden herdacht op het Tyne Cot Memorial. Vanaf donderdagnamiddag tot en met zaterdag bieden de vrijwilligers van het Genootschap Passchendaele Society 1917 en het Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917 op de parking van Tyne Cot Cemetery gratis koffie aan.

To commemorate this fact, the Field Marshal Haig s Own Pipes & Drums organise, together with the Black Watch Association, the municipality of Zonnebeke and the MMP 1917 a ceremony at the Black Watch monument. 3 P.M. REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY OF THE BRITISH, FRENCH AND GERMAN EMBASSY AND THE WEST YORKSHIRE POLICE BAND Tyne Cot Cemetery / Vijfwegestraat, Passendale Every year, the British, French and German Embassy hold a Remembrance Day Service, commemorating the British, French and German victims of WWI. The music for the ceremony will be played by the West Yorkshire Police Band. The band represents the West Yorkshire Police Corps who lost 124 police men during the First World War. On November 11th, they commemorate these fallen soldiers. 36 are buried in Belgium and 5 of them are commemorated at the Tyne Cot Memorial. From Thursday afternoon until Saturday, the volunteers of the Genootschap Passchendaele Society 1917 and the Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917 offer free coffee on the car park of Tyne Cot Cemetery.
MEMORIAL MUSEUM PASSCHENDAELE 1917 Het Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917 brengt op een aangrijpende en aanschouwelijke manier het historische verhaal van de Eerste Wereldoorlog met bijzondere aandacht voor de Slag van Passendale. Deze slag staat bekend als één van de gruwelijkste veldslagen uit de Eerste Wereldoorlog, met meer dan een half miljoen slachtoffers voor een terreinverschuiving van slechts acht kilometer. Het MMP1917 combineert de interactieve opstelling van een eigentijds museum, met het uitzonderlijke belevingsaspect van de Dugout & Trenches. Aan de hand van historische voorwerpen, authentieke brieven, affiches en andere documenten, uniformen van de verschillende legers, videofragmenten krijgen groot en klein zicht op hoe het leven op en rond de slagvelden moet geweest zijn. De interactieve elementen doorheen de hele museumopstelling zorgen ervoor dat ook de kinderen geboeid kennismaken met dit stukje geschiedenis. Via de unieke Dugout Experience ontdek je hoe de Britten in 1917 ondergronds gingen leven. Een beklemmende belevenis die een onthutsend beeld schept van de erbarmelijke en claustrofobische leefomstandigheden destijds. Afsluiter van het bezoek is de waarheidsgetrouwe reconstructie van Duitse en Britse loopgraven waarlangs originele schuilplaatsen nagebouwd werden. Proef het beangstigende gevoel dat de soldaten overviel toen zij hier gevangen zaten. Een 3 km lange wandellus met thematische infopanelen brengt je van het Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917 naar Tyne Cot Cemetery. Tyne Cot Cemetery is een indrukwekkend én ingetogen baken van rust dat zich uitstrekt in het voormalige oorlogslandschap. Met zijn 11.956 graven is dit de grootste Commonwealth-begraafplaats ter wereld, de stille getuige van de bloedige Slag van Passendale. De Commonwealth War Graves Commission staat in voor het onderhoud van de begraafplaats. Het bezoekerscentrum dat in 2007 ingehuldigd werd door de Britse Koningin Elizabeth II en de toenmalige Belgische Koningin Paola, geeft meer duiding over de begraafplaats zelf en biedt een panoramisch zicht op de slagvelden van 1917. Het bezoekerscentrum wordt beheerd door het Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917 en is dagelijks open van 10 tot 18 uur. Vele tien- en zelfs honderdduizenden bezoekers komen jaarlijks eer betonen aan de mannen soms jongens nog die hier en op de omliggende slagvelden het leven lieten. Een bezoek dat niemand onberoerd laat. Een aangrijpend bezoek dat je verkenning van de oorlogssites in de omgeving alleen maar zal verrijken.
MEMORIAL MUSEUM PASSCHENDAELE 1917 The Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917 presents the historic story of the First World War in a poignant and vivid way, with a particular emphasis on the Battle of Passchendaele. This battle is known as one of the most horrific battles of the First World War, with more than half a million casualties for a territorial gain of merely eight kilometres. The MMP1917 combines the interactive design of a modern museum with the exceptional aspect of experiencing the dugouts & trenches. Using historical objects, authentic letters, posters and other documents, uniforms of the various armies and video clips etc. both young and old get an insight into how life must have been on and around the battlefields. The interactive elements throughout the entire museum collection ensure that children become acquainted with this piece of history in an interesting way. Through the unique Dugout Experience you discover how the British went to live underground in 1917. An oppressive experience that creates a disconcerting picture of the miserable and claustrophobic living conditions at that time. The visit concludes at the faithful reconstruction of German and British trenches, along which original shelters have been replicated. Experience the terrifying feeling that befell the soldiers when they were imprisoned here. A 3 km walking route, with thematic information panels, takes you from the Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917 to Tyne Cot Cemetery. Tyne Cot Cemetery is an impressive yet understated haven of tranquillity that extends through the former battle landscape. With its 11.956 graves, it is one of the largest Commonwealth cemeteries in the world and it is a silent witness to the bloody Battle of Passchendaele. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission is responsible for maintaining the cemetery. The visitors centre, which the British Queen Elizabeth II and the former Belgian Queen Paola inaugurated in 2007, provides more information about the cemetery itself and offers a panoramic view over the battlefields of 1917. The visitors centre is managed by the Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917 and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Many tens and even hundreds of thousands of visitors come each year to pay their respects to the men some still only boys who lost their lives in the surrounding battlefields. A visit leaves no one unmoved. An intense visit that will only enrich your knowledge of the battle sites in the area.
