1 AFSTUDEEROPDRACHTEN KCPK Kenniscentrum Papier en Karton (KCPK) is een initiatief van de Vereniging van Nederlandse Papierfabrieken (VNP) en heeft als missie de kennisinfrastructuur in de Nederlandse papier- en kartonindustrie te versterken door generatie, ontsluiting en verspreiding van kennis. Afstudeer- of Capita Selecta-opdrachten worden liefst samen met de student vormgegeven. Hieronder een indruk van de mogelijkheden binnen het Werkgebied Eindproducten. Combinaties van opdrachten zijn mogelijk en ook eigen inbreng wordt zeer op prijs gesteld. Daarnaast staan wij ook open voor opdrachten die niet genoemd zijn. De papiersector heeft een route gevonden om 95% te recyclen en systemen opgezet. Voor kunststof zijn die systemen er nog niet, laat staan voor de combinaties. Vooruitgang hou je tegen door het te verbieden, dus hoe ga je om met de combinaties van materialen? - If it quacks like a duck, swims like a duck, and looks like a duck, it is a duck. Hoe ga je om met allerlei materialen die zich anders voordoen dan ze zijn? Stone paper ziet er bijvoorbeeld uit als papier, maar is het niet, en nanocellulose ziet er uit als plastic maar is het niet. Focus van deze opdracht is over de hele keten, inclusief consument. - Wat maakt papier papier en waar ligt de grens? Hierbij ligt de focus op de afbakening, meer theoretisch dus. - Alles is recyclebaar, maar soms is het ongewenst. Op welke manieren kunnen we recyclen, wat zijn de scenario s en variabelen en wat kan, afhankelijk van het perspectief, een nieuw framework zijn? Design for recyclability evaluatietool. - Opvolging UT-afstudeeropdracht Comparing value for all stakeholders a lifecycle analysis as communication tool, waarbij de tool daadwerkelijk ontwikkeld en geprogrammeerd moet worden. 2 AFSTUDEEROPDRACHT ACTINPAK Kenniscentrum Papier en Karton (KCPK) is een initiatief van de Vereniging van Nederlandse Papierfabrieken (VNP) en heeft als missie de kennisinfrastructuur in de Nederlandse papier- en kartonindustrie te versterken door generatie, ontsluiting en verspreiding van kennis. Met het programma Eindproducten geeft KCPK vorm aan het onderzoek gericht op het creëren van meerwaarde en het toepassen van papier en karton in verschillende markten. Een belangrijke toepassing van papier en karton is in verpakkingen. Een nieuwe ontwikkeling op dit vlak zijn actieve en intelligente verpakkingen. Actieve verpakkingen beinvloeden het verpakte product of het klimaat binnenin de verpakking om zo kwaliteitsverlies te voorkomen. Enkele voorbeelden zijn verpakkingen die zuurstof absorberen of de groei van schimmels of bacteriën remmen of voorkomen. Intelligente verpakkingen detecteren of meten iets in het product of de verpakking, en communiceren dit naar de gebruiker. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan een label dat van kleur verandert als een flesje bier optimaal gekoeld is of weergeeft dat vlees niet meer veilig is om gegeten te worden. Veel van dit soort technologieën zijn al ontwikkeld, en de mogelijke toepassingen zijn eindeloos. Echter zijn er maar weinig voorbeelden te noemen van actieve en intelligente verpakkingen die ook daadwerkelijk worden toegepast. Binnen het ActInPak project werkt KCPK samen met vele andere bedrijven en universiteiten in heel Europa aan het onderzoeken waarom dit zo is. BELEVING EN COMMUNICATIE VAN ACTIEVE EN INTELLIGENTE VERPAKKINGEN Één van de redenen voor de beperkte toepassing van actieve en intelligente verpakkingen is dat dit soort technologieën vaak niet zichtbaar zijn. Het gevolg hiervan is dat consumenten dit soort verpakkingen vaak niet kunnen onderscheiden van gewone verpakkingen of de meerwaarde/voordelen ervan niet herkennen. In de gevallen dat het wel zichtbaar is dat een verpakking actief of intelligent is, is dit vaak omdat er een extra zakje of label is toegevoegd aan de verpakking. In veel gevallen wordt dit door consumenten ervaren als eng of ongezond, waardoor zij kiezen voor de niet-actieve concurrent. In het geval van labels die de versheid van een product aangeven is het daarnaast aannemelijk dat consumenten altijd kiezen voor het meest verse product wanneer de communicatie niet juist is. In dit soort situaties hebben de actieve of intelligente verpakkingen dus eigenlijk een averechts effect: in plaats van het weggooien van voedsel zoveel mogelijk te voorkomen, wordt er juist meer weggegooid omdat consumenten de producten niet kopen. DE OPDRACHT Het onderzoeken van de juiste communicatiewijze voor verschillende actieve en intelligente verpakkingstechnologieen. Dit door communicatieconcepten voor actieve en intelligente verpakkingen te ontwikkelen en consumentenonderzoek te doen.

3 ACTIVE AND INTELLIGENT PACKAGING ACTINPAK STUDENT ASSIGNMENT Bumaga BV chairs one of the largest European networks in the field of active and intelligent packaging, called ActInPak. Within this network, both science and industry work on innovation and market introduction for active and intelligent (fibrebased) packaging. The work is performed across 4 Working Groups: Development/Innovation, Industrialisation/Market introduction, LCA/Sustainability issues, health and safety, and Knowledge transfer and dissemination. As a common ground to work on, three demonstrator products have been defined to serve as models and communication means: Indicator & Detection of bacteria Ethylene scavenging inner layer Antibacterial / anti mould corrugated layer sandwiched between inner and outer layer Oxygen scavenger applied as a label on interior of MAP packaging Within this assignment, we ask students to elaborate on the production of (one of) these products by developing actual demonstrators, or perform technological and economic analyses (or even better: combine both). The goal of the assignment is to have a clear view on the viability of the products (either from design or from techno/eco point of view), and to identify challenges and barriers. Most of the participants in the network are material scientists, and thus the design/development point of view as well as the ability to see the business case is lacking. Expected deliverables are at least a report and presentation. Then for the democase, a demonstrator (mock-up) of the developed solution, and a video to explain your result or show how you work are expected as well as this makes the result more tangible and attractive to communicate. If there is an opportunity, we will invite you to join one of the network sessions to present your work and participate in an industrial brainstorming workshop. Most ideal would be the session 7-9 November 2017, but this depends on the planning and results. It is a student activity fostering collaboration between students and ActInPak partners, contributing to ActInPak s scientific objectives, allowing participants to learn new techniques and communication in the field. The assignment is particularly intended for young students in Bachelor or Master Degree, from participating COST countries and partners*. 5 ASSIGNMENTS CIRC-PACK Kenniscentrum Papier en Karton (KCPK) is an initiative of the Royal Dutch Papermakers Association (VNP). KCPK s mission is to strengthen the knowledge infrastructure in the Dutch paper & board industry through generating, unlocking and spreading knowledge. With the program End Products, KCPK shapes the research focused on creating added value and applying paper and board in various markets. One important application of paper and board is in packaging. One of the research areas related to packaging is that of making paper and board more than competitive with commonly used packaging plastics such as PE, PET and PP. Since untreated paper does not have any barrier properties except a certain light barrier, barriers will have to be added by combining paper and board with other materials. CIRCULAR & RECYCLABLE PAPER & BOARD WITH ADDED BARRIERS Such combinations of paper and plastics already exist, however the current forms are almost impossible to recycle. KCPK is currently taking part in a European project aimed towards the development of innovative packaging formats and testing materials that improve recyclability and the end-of-life scenario of such packagings. Specifically, a fully bio-based multilayer material based on paperboard laminated with bio-based plastics that is fully compatible with the existing paper recycling process will be developed. The project aims towards changing the current linear value chain (extract-produce-use-dispose) to a fully circular value chain where all components are recycled and re-used in closed loops. The material that will be developed should be an innovation that is suitable for packaging detergents, and therefore the requirements of the current solutions will be taken into account and the composition and functionalities of each part of the packaging will be detailed. Based on these findings, innovative bio-based packaging solutions will be designed and the combination of (material) layers necessary to fulfil the requirements defined. Members from the whole value chain will be involved to choose the best and most circular packaging solution. Finally, 1000 kg (=3000 m2) of laminated board will be produced and recycling tests will be performed to test the recyclability of the developed multimaterial innovation. THE ASSIGNMENT The total duration of the aforementioned project is 2,5 years, starting in July The students can make their assignments related to the project in the specific parts of the project: 1. Problem formulation and baseline: 1.1 Define problem of multimaterial packaging recycling from different stakeholder point of view and propose solutions from a circular economy perspective Develop tools to evaluate the recyclability of packaging in paper recycling.

6 1.3 Analyse and evaluate the value chain of multimaterial packaging using principles of circular economy. 2. Packaging design (only available until end of December 2017): 2.1 Packaging design aimed at recyclability and eco-design principles (relevant business case will be selected with the student). 2.2 Packaging design for detergent packaging. 3. Market research: 3.1 Extensive market analysis about packaging technologies developed in the project (e.g. competitor analysis). 4. Evaluate the innovation and impact in other markets (only available after June 2018): 4.1 Compare baseline with innovation and new value chain. Develop reccomendations for future schenarios. 4.2 Evaluate how this multimaterial innovation could be adapted to be applied in different products and markets. 7 ASSIGNMENTS NEW CIRCULAR PRODUCTS Kenniscentrum Papier en Karton (KCPK) is an initiative of the Royal Dutch Papermakers Association (VNP). KCPK s mission is to strengthen the knowledge infrastructure in the Dutch paper & board industry through generating, unlocking and spreading knowledge. With the program End Products, KCPK shapes the research focused on creating added value and applying paper and board in various markets. One important goal for the Dutch Paper and Board sector is to become more efficient in their use of raw materials by means of reclaiming all sources of fibers that can be used to produce new products. Currently, with the European Circular Economy agendas, the PBI is unlocking the potential of previously unaccessible sources of fibres (e.g. industrial waste streams, dipers, municipal sewage). NEW CIRCULAR PRODUCTS In this scope KCPK would like to research new products that can be produced using these reclaimed fibers and evaluate the opportunities, market environment and consummer acceptance for such innovations THE ASSIGNMENT The proposed assignment is to choose one of these reclaimed fiber sources, develop a new fibrebased packaging and analyse the market for that innovation. 8 AFSTUDEEROPDRACHT GLYCIX Kenniscentrum Papier en Karton (KCPK) is een initiatief van de Vereniging van Nederlandse Papierfabrieken (VNP) en heeft als missie de kennisinfrastructuur in de Nederlandse papier- en kartonindustrie te versterken door generatie, ontsluiting en verspreiding van kennis. Met het programma Eindproducten geeft KCPK vorm aan het onderzoek gericht op het creëren van meerwaarde en het toepassen van papier en karton in verschillende markten. Speerpunten hierin zijn het toevoegen van extra/nieuwe functionaliteiten en meer met minder. Enkele specifieke voorbeelden zijn het toevoegen van (bio-based en recycleerbare) barrières om bijvoorbeeld water(damp) of zuurstof tegen te houden, actieve stoffen voor bijvoorbeeld de productie van schimmelwerend papier, en het verbeteren van de papiereigenschappen om lichter papier te kunnen gebruiken voor dezelfde toepassingen. GLYCIX Glycix is een materiaal dat, wanneer toegevoegd aan papier en karton, de potentie heeft bij te dragen aan alle bovengenoemde speerpunten. Glycix is een bio-based en biologisch afbreekbare thermohardende plastic dat na uitharding vochtbarrière- brandwerende eigenschappen toevoegt aan het papier of karton en het bovendien stijver/sterker kan maken. Daarbij zijn de eigenschappen instelbaar door te variëren in de temperatuur en tijd waarbij het materiaal wordt uitgehard, wat betekent dat de eigenschappen in theorie op bestelling gemaakt kunnen worden. Hoe dit allemaal precies werkt is echter nog niet (helemaal) duidelijk, en dat betekent dat er nog veel onderzoek nodig is om goed te kunnen inschatten hoe en voor welke toepassingen het van waarde kan zijn. Onderzoek is onder andere nodig op het gebied van de materiaaleigenschappen van Glycix bij de verschillende samenstellingen, uithardingscondities en combinaties met verschillende papiersoorten en op gebied van de verschillende mogelijkheden die er zijn om glycix te verwerken in papier en karton. Ook het in kaart brengen van de marktbehoeftes en hoe papier en karton met Glycix daarop in kunnen spelen (inclusief het testen van de materialen in commerciële omgevingen) is een nog openstaand vraagstuk. DE OPDRACHT Het leveren van een bijdrage aan de ontwikkeling van papier- en kartonproducten met glycix door een of meerdere van bovengenoemde openstaande vraagstukken op te pakken.

9 AFSTUDEEROPDRACHT SMART CONNECTED PRINTING Kenniscentrum Papier en Karton (KCPK) is een initiatief van de Vereniging van Nederlandse Papierfabrieken (VNP) en heeft als missie de kennisinfrastructuur in de Nederlandse papier- en kartonindustrie te versterken door generatie, ontsluiting en verspreiding van kennis. Met het programma Eindproducten geeft KCPK vorm aan het onderzoek gericht op het creëren van meerwaarde en het toepassen van papier en karton in verschillende markten. Een van de onderwerpen waaraan gewerkt wordt is geprinte elektronica het printen van elektronische circuits op papier of karton met (meestal onzichtbare) geleidende inkten. Voorbeelden van geprinte elektronica zijn bijvoorbeeld RFID- of NFC-tags, die informatieoverdracht van papier naar een digitaal apparaat zoals smartphones en tablets mogelijk maken. SMART CONNECTED PRINTING In het project Smart Connected Printing werkt KCPK aan het ontwikkelen van een tweewegs-interactie tussen papier en smartphone/tablet. Vertrekpunt hiervoor is de Papercode : een onzichtbare elektronische code die verwerkt kan worden in Figuur 1: werking van PaperCode conventioneel drukwerk op standaard papier of kartonsoorten. Papercode kan in contact met smartphone of tablet worden uitgelezen en geverifieerd (zie figuur 1). Hierdoor kan digitale content of functionaliteit on demand worden vrijgegeven of gestart. Op dit moment betreft het nog eenrichtingsverkeer (het kaartje communiceert iets naar de smartphone of tablet), maar het doel is om de technologie verder te ontwikkelen zodat communicatie in twee richtingen (zowel van kaartje naar smartphone/tablet als andersom) mogelijk wordt. Doordat de inkt onzichtbaar is kan deze niet worden gekopieerd hetgeen het een prima optie maakt voor bijvoorbeeld beveiligd drukwerk, maar ook voor vele andere toepassingen. Het uiteindelijke resultaat van dit project is een integraal concept voor Smart Connected Printing bestaande uit met elkaar verbonden (dynamische) Papercode, app s en een centrale database waarin tweewegcommunicatie plaats vindt met de daarvoor noodzakelijke aangepaste productiemethoden. Het gaat om een nieuwe technologie waaraan verschillende diensten gekoppeld kunnen worden. In principe gaat het om een platformtechnologie die voor veel verschillende doeleinden kan worden ingezet. Er worden verschillende varianten voorzien waarvan de exacte uitvoering wordt bepaald door de afzonderlijke toepassingen. DE OPDRACHT Onderzoeken van de verschillende mogelijke toepassingen van Smart Connected Printing en de eisen die deze stellen aan de technologie. Eventueel zou ook een bijdrage geleverd kunnen worden aan de technische ontwikkeling van de technologie, bijvoorbeeld door het testen van de robuustheid van het drukwerk met en zonder (verschillende) beschermende coatings.
