3 INterview» WELTEVREE FOUNDERS Floris schoonderbeek & dick van hoff» Analog well-being, digital contact INTERVIEW WELTEVREE FOUNDERS Analoog welbehagen, digitaal contact In 2007 richtten ontwerpers Floris Schoonderbeek en Dick van Hoff het productlabel Weltevree op. Een BEDRIJF met een verhaal. Weltevree... Floris Schoonderbeek: Weltevree betekent dat je je behaaglijk voelt, tevreden met je omgeving. In Nederland heten oude boerderijen vaak zo. t Is een thuisgevoel: hier voel ik me goed. Dick van Hoff: Dat is ook de filosofie achter onze producten. Die roepen een gevoel van welbehagen op. Je kunt je eigen wereld eromheen creëren. Tijdsbeeld Parallel aan de gemakken en snelheid van digitale media ontstaat er volgens Van Hoff en Schoonderbeek bij velen een behoefte aan een analoge focus. Schoonderbeek: Zelf voel ik een sterke behoefte aan direct contact met mijn omgeving. Ik wil weer het plezier beleven van zelf iets initiëren, het gevoel van onafhankelijkheid. Voor die behoefte maakt Weltevree producten. Voorwerpen waar je wat mee moet doen, die tot leven komen in het gebruik. Neem de Dutchtub, zegt Van Hoff, die moet je zelf warm stoken met hout. Na die inspanningen kijk je vanuit het warme bad naar de sterren met een voldaan gevoel.wat wil je nog meer! Kwaliteit Kwaliteit is bij Weltevree in de eerste plaats kwaliteit van beleving. Oftewel, zoals Van Hoff het formuleert, het plezier dat je beleeft aan het gebruik van onze producten. De vormentaal sluit daarbij aan: eenvoudig, helder en direct. Je ziet hoe het werkt. Dat de producten zorgvuldig ontworpen en gemaakt zijn, vinden ze vanzelfsprekend. Daarvoor werken ze intensief samen met vakkundige producenten. Schoonderbeek: Onze ontwerpen moeten fijn zijn om te gebruiken én om te produceren. Ze weten waar ze over praten en kennen hun klanten. Mensen die een product van Weltevree gekocht hebben, sturen vaak reacties: foto s, verhalen, ideeën. In de praktijk blijkt elk product een eigen leven te gaan leiden. Gebruikers gaan ermee aan de slag. Ze zoeken een geschikte houtleverancier, ze proberen hun eigen recepten uit in de Outdooroven. Zo ontstaan steeds nieuwe verhalen. Van Hoff: Er blijkt altijd meer mogelijk dan je zelf had kunnen bedenken. Floris Schoonderbeek: Weltevree means you feel pleasant, contented with your surroundings. In the Netherlands old farmhouses are often called thus. It is a homely feeling: here I feel good. Dick van Hoff: That is also the philosophy behind our products. They appeal to a feeling of comfort and well-being. You can create your own world around them. Image of the time Parallel to the conveniences and speed of digital media, Van Hoff and Schoonderbeek are convinced that many people feel the need for an analogue focus. Schoonderbeek: Personally I feel a strong need for an immediate connection with my surroundings. I want to experience the fun of self-initiating, the feeling of independence. Weltevree creates products that fulfil this need. Objects that ask for an active approach, that come to life through usage. Take the Dutchtub for example, says Van Hoff, you have to build your own fire to heat the water. After that effort, you can watch the stars from the warm tub with a contented feeling... What more could you want! Quality At Weltevree quality is first of all quality of experience. Or, as Van Hoff expresses it; the pleasure you experience when using our products. The used style is consistent with that: simple, clear and direct. You immediately see how it works. It is self-evident to Van Hoff and Schoonderbeek that all products are conscientiously designed and made. To reach their own high standard they set up an intensive cooperation with skilled craft-based companies. Schoonderbeek: Our designs have to be a pleasure to use ánd to produce. Van Hoff and Schoonderbeek know what they are talking about and know their customers. People who have purchased a Weltevree-product often send us photographs, stories and ideas. Each product starts leading its own life. Users work with it, they find the best local supplier of firewood, experiment with their own recipes in the Outdooroven. New stories originate constantly. Van Hoff: As it turns out, there are always more possibilities than we could have imagined ourselves. For example, how would you transport a Dutchtub to a house high up in the mountains? It seemed difficult to me. Then we get a photograph of that bathtub, loaded with firewood, hanging from a cable way between the rocks... Dialogue Weltevree likes to show the way how consumers all over the world actively use their products. They created Worldwide Local, a digital platform that aims to connect users of Weltevree products worldwide. According to the designers, real products and the digital world are actually a really good combination. Van Hoff: We thought it would be great to discover the way other consumers use of their Stonestove or Wheelbench, either on the other side of the world or right around the corner. Where can I find a nearby supplier of firewood? How does an American put his Outdooroven to use to bake a pizza? The idea is a digital environment where visitors of similar mindset can meet and inspire each other. A place to exchange experiences, photographs, videos, useful tips or Outdooroven-recipes. The design process develops from the monologue it traditionally is, more and more into a dialogue between user and designer. A complete story. Dutchtub naar een huis hoog in de bergen? Leek mij lastig. Dan krijgen we een foto van dat bad, volgeladen met brandhout, hangend aan een kabelbaan tussen de rotsen... Dialoog Weltevree wil graag laten zien hoe consumenten over de hele wereld actief hun producten gebruiken. Daarom heeft Weltevree een online ontmoetingsplek ontwikkeld: Worldwide Local. Volgens de ontwerpers zijn fysieke producten en de digitale wereld namelijk heel goed te combineren. Van Hoff: Het leek ons geweldig als je kunt zien wat anderen met een Stonestove of Wheelbench doen. Elders op de aardbol of direct om de hoek. Waar kun je hier in de omgeving goed hout krijgen? Hoe bakt een Amerikaan z n pizza s in de Outdooroven? Het idee is een digitale omgeving waar bezoekers met eenzelfde mentaliteit elkaar kunnen ontmoeten en inspireren. Een plek voor het uitwisselen van ervaringen, foto s, filmpjes, tips of recepten voor de Outdooroven. Zo wordt ontwerpen in plaats van de traditionele monoloog steeds meer een dialoog met de gebruikers. Een compleet verhaal. 6 STORY» MOLENTOT MASTENRAK A late summer swimming competition» STORY MOLENTOTMASTENRAK Hungry for water Molentotmastenrak Elk jaar aan het eind van de zomer, als iedereen weer terug is van vakantie en nog net kan genieten van de laatste mooie dagen, vindt de zwemwedstrijd Molentotmastenrak plaats. De start is tussen de windmolens en de finish tussen de de bootmasten die boven de haven t Raboes in Eemnes, uitsteken. De oversteek van 2,5 km in open water is een uitdaging voor jezelf, op je eigen niveau. De winnaar is dan ook niet de snelste zwemmer, maar diegene die zichzelf het meest heeft weten te verbazen. Na de toch vaak koude zwemtocht staan er warmgestookte Dutchtubs klaar om in bij te komen. Na het zwemmen is het voornamelijk een sociaal event. Napratend met elkaar over het zwemmen maar vooral de zomer en al zijn belevenissen. Badend en proostend wordt er ook verdiend gegeten, afgelopen zomer pizza s bereid in Outdoorovens. De deelnemers, alle supporters, maar ook de reddingsbrigade eet mee. Het is een traditie geworden om hoog te houden! Henk Willemsen winnaar molentotmastenrak Every year at the end of summer, once everyone has returned from their respective holidays, and is just in time to enjoy the last few wonderful days, the swimming contest Molentotmastenrak takes place The start is situated between windmills while the swimmers finish between the masts of the harbour of t Raboes in Eemnes. The crossing of 2,5 kilometres of open water is a challenge for yourself, at your own pace. The winner is not the fastest swimmer, but the person who has most amazed him- or herself. After the often chilly swim-tour, several pre-heated Dutchtubs stand ready to recover in. Once the contest is over, Molentotmastrak is mainly a social event. People stay talking about the swimming and more often about the past summer and everything that has happened. Besides the bathing and toasting people present also enjoy a well-deserved meal, that last summer consisted of pizza s prepared in the Outdooroven. The participants, the supporters, as well as the locals from the rescue-squad are all dining together. It has become a tradition that is worth to be upheld. 7 INTERVIEW WELTEVREE DESIGNERS INterview» WELTEVREE DESIGNERS ABOUT IMAGE, CONCEPT & EXPERIENCE» Rogier Martens & his Wheelbench The experience The Outdooroven is a robust product, nicely proportioned, that works excellent and has an ingenious construction. It makes it possible to extend the outdoor-season. People us that the pizza worked out perfectly. That says it all. In the end it is all about people enjoying our products. De ervaring De Outdooroven is een robuust product, mooi van verhouding, werkt uitstekend en zit slim in elkaar. Zo kun je langer van het buitenseizoen genieten. Mensen mailen ons dat de pizza geweldig gelukt is. Dat zegt genoeg. Uiteindelijk gaat het erom dat ze onze producten met plezier gebruiken. Het beeld In Amsterdam zag ik de brug naar het Muziekgebouw aan t IJ. Over de brug liepen muzikanten die hun instrumenten meedroegen op hun rug, zoals een slak zijn huisje. Dat beeld bleef hangen. Het idee Ik wilde een bank maken die je zelf makkelijk zou kunnen verplaatsen. Een zitplek voor meerdere personen, die je kunt neerzetten waar je maar wilt. Elke verplaatsing kan weer aanleiding zijn voor nieuwe gedachten of een nieuw gesprek. De ervaring Mijn manier van ontwerpen is nuchter en vindingrijk. De Wheelbench is daar een voorbeeld van, het is een heel helder ding. Doel en gebruik zijn volkomen duidelijk. Je ziet mensen dan ook echt rondlopen met deze bank. Hij nodigt uit om er iets mee te doen, daar heb je geen uitleg of aansporing bij nodig. The image In Amsterdam I saw the bridge that is leading towards the Muziekgebouw aan t IJ (one of the city s concert halls). Musicians were walking over it whilst carrying their instruments on their backs, like a snail carrying his shell-house. That image stayed with me. The concept I wanted to create a bench that you could easily move yourself. A place to sit for several people, that you can put anywhere you want. Every relocation can be cause for new thoughts or a new conversation. The experience The way I design is sober and inventive. The Wheelbench is an example of that methodology. It is a very understandable object, in which both purpose and usage are completely evident. You actually see people walking around with this bench. It invokes the action, there is no need for explanation or encouragement. Floris Schoonderbeek & his Dutchtub The image I observe my surroundings with the mindset of an urban-farmer, looking for situations in which your surroundings offer more than you expected. You have to want and be able to see that. With that idea in mind I develop products. Het beeld Met de mentaliteit van een stadsboer kijk ik om me heen, ik zoek naar situaties waar de omgeving meer biedt dan je denkt. Dat moet je willen en kunnen zien. Vanuit die houding ontwikkel ik producten. Het beeld In het vroege voorjaar zat ik in mijn tuin met een vuurkorf voor de warmte en een barbecue voor de worstjes en het gevoel: dit werkt niet. Het idee Het leek me logisch om het aangename te combineren met het praktische. Warmte bron, barbecue en oven tegelijk. Met mijn studio aan huis was de stap snel gemaakt om zelf een prototype in elkaar te lassen van aanwezig restmateriaal. Later heb ik de Outdooroven met Weltevree verder uitgewerkt. Zo n samenwerking inspireert mij enorm. Samen puzzelen we net zolang tot elk detail perfect is opgelost. Pas dan ontstaat er een volwaardig product. Dick van Hoff & his Outdooroven The image In early spring I was sitting in my garden with a fire basket to provide warmth, a barbecue to cook sausages and the feeling: this does not work. The concept It seemed natural to me to combine the practical with the pleasurable. Heat source, barbecue and oven all in one. Having my studio at my house it was a small step to welt a prototype of leftover materials I had in stock. Later on I developed the idea within Weltevree. I find a collaboration like this immensely inspiring. Together we search for the perfect solution to every detail. This is the only way to achieve a perfect product. The concept Bathing outside gives me a feeling of freedom and independence. That s why I created a lightweight, wood-stoked outdoor bathtub that can be used anywhere. It is a very basic product, both in shape and in function, but will nevertheless invoke a feeling of luxuriousness on the user. Sober and decadent at the same time. The experience On a Friday afternoon I noticed a person driving on the motorway with a Dutchtub on the roof of his car. I recognized the serial number and phoned the owner. It turned out he was on his way to the Ardennes to spend the weekend with friends. Dwelling through the forest during the day, and enjoying an outdoor bath on the campsite in the evening! Daarom bedacht ik een mobiel, houtgestookt buitenbad dat inzetbaar is waar jij wilt. Het is een heel primair product, zowel in vorm als in functie, maar het geeft de gebruiker toch een rijk gevoel. Sober en decadent tegelijk. De ervaring Op een vrijdagmiddag zag ik iemand op de snelweg rijden met een Dutchtub op zijn dak. Ik herkende het serienummer, 007, en belde de betreffende klant. 10 STORY» WELTEVREE & THE STONESTOVE In 2000 the design of the Stonestove originated on account of an exhibition» STORY WELTEVREE & THE STONESTOVE Closer than you think DICHTERBIJ DAN JE DENKT In 2000 is het ontwerp voor de Stonestove ontstaan naar aanleiding van een expositie. Door de brede interesse en een aankoop door museum Boijmans Van Beuningen werd de betonkachel een succes en dat werd direct zijn ondergang. Als zelfproducerend ontwerper was ik ineens ondergedompeld in het beton, dat moest anders. Na vele bezoeken aan kachelfabrikanten was de teleurstelling groot, niemand durfde er in te stappen: geen ervaring met beton, te eigenwijs ontwerp. Totdat ik in gesprek kwam met Floris Schoonderbeek, een goede bekende uit het vak. Zelf doen was zijn antwoord, maar dan professioneler. Vanaf dat moment zijn we er samen in gevlogen: het ontwerp door ontwikkelen, mallen maken, productie opzetten, distributie, verkoop, het hele verhaal. Zo is onder onze handen het fundament voor Weltevree ontstaan. Dit inspirerende begin heeft het inmiddels volwassen bestaan van het productlabel Weltevree mogelijk gemaakt. Dick van Hoff Because of the broad interest and an acquisition by Museum Boymans Van Beuningen, the Stonestove became an instant success, which turned out to be its downfall. As a self-producing designer I was suddenly immersed in concrete, that had to change. After many visits to stove-manufacturers the disappointment was huge. Not one manufacturer was willing to get into the project: no experience with concrete, a too distinctive design. Until the moment I started talking with Floris Schoonderbeek, a fellow designer. Do it yourself, was his idea, but on a more professional level. From that moment on we jumped in it together; further developing the design, building moulds, setting up the production, distribution, sales: the whole story. During this process the foundation of Weltevree originated under both our hands. This inspiring start has since enabled Weltevree to develop into a mature productlabel. 11 STORY» GrÄnsfors, a village & factory The Axechair is the result of a cold wintervoyage to Sweden» STORY AXECHAIR A voyage to Sweden GRÄNSFORS, EEN DORP & FABRIEK De Axechair is het resultaat van een koude winterreis naar Zweden. Ik bezocht tijdens deze reis de bijlenfabriek Gränsfors en de familie Gabriel Brånby die de fabriek runt. Ze lieten me de fabriek zien maar ook de omgeving van het gelijknamige dorp. Het was een weekend van ijsvissen, winterkamperen en de Zweedse natuur. De cultuur van de fabriek, het dorp en de omgeving bleken zo mooi in balans. Naast de pure verbinding van de bijl en de steel, welke enorm sterk is maar tegelijkertijd ook een beeldende kwaliteit bezit, laat de Axechair de romantiek van Zweden zien tegenover de robuustheid van de bijl. De bijna barokke vorm van de bijlensteel gaat over in de bruutheid van de verbinding. Gränsfors en Weltevree vullen elkaar mooi aan: hun bijlencultuur gebruikt in een product dat een andere toepassing laat zien van een legendarische verbinding en fabriek. Uiteraard kloof ik thuis elk stammetje met een Gränsfors. Floris Schoonderbeek fan van Gränsfors During this trip I visited the axe-factory of Gränsfors and the Gabriel Brånby family that run it. They showed me the factory and its surroundings as well as the identically named village. It was a weekend of ice-fishing, winter-camping and enjoying Swedish nature. The culture of the factory, the village and the environment turned out to be perfectly balanced. Apart from the straightforward connection of the axe and handle, that is incredibly strong while simultaneously possessing an illustrative quality, the Axechair showcases the romanticism of Sweden in contrast to the robustness of the axe. The almost baroque shape of the axes handle passes into the toughness of the connection. Through this cooperation, Gränsfors and Weltevree strengthen each other, Gränsfors axe-culture used in a product that presents a different application of a legendary connection and factory. The desire to prolong the outdoor-season and to be able to enjoy outdoor eating and outdoor living throughout the entire year, makes Weltevree introduce outdoor cooking. The action and quality of outdoor cooking is represented by means of a cookbook that was especially made for the Outdooroven.
