VAT This course, supported by demonstrations, teaches about the different voltage generation, diagnostics and monitoring techniques, weakest link statistics, knowledge rules generation and diagnosis support systems for asset management. Insulation coordination: origin, behavior and control of spans. Generation of test voltages: AC, DC, impulse voltage and special voltages. Conventional and optical measurement methods for high voltages and currents. Dielectric loss measurements and detection of partial discharges. Backgrounds of the statistical analysis according to Weibull, statistics of the weakest link. Lifetime tests at constant and progressive loads and statistical data processing in practice. Critical treatment of an existing test specification. Diagnostic tools for lifetime diagnosis and treatment of modern methodologies for maintenance management. Master lecture serie: Hoogspanning III High DC voltage Dr.ir. P.H.F. Morshuis (TU ) 24 April, 1, 8, 22, 29 May, 5 and 12 June 925 excl. VAT The behavior of electrical insulation changes drastically when we apply dc voltage instead of ac. For the electrical engineer to make a reliable design or test for a dc insulation construction the difference in behavior should be perfectly clear. The entire cycle from design to testing is considered and the following topics are addressed: Electric fields at dc voltage Surface charge; origin and measurement Space charge; origin and measurement Partial discharges; origin, measurement and analysis Breakdown mechanisms, life time estimation Test procedures The above topics are illustrated with applications coming from the power engineering area (hvdc cable), but also with for instance medical applications (x-ray). VAT This course presents both the basic principles of high voltage science and details with the practical application of this knowledge.

3 Understanding of electrical fields and the application of different tools in designing high voltage components are important in making reliable solutions for electric power industry. Electric fields Breakdown mechanisms in vacuum, gasses and liquids Lightning phenomena Breakdown of solids; discharges and lifespan issues Combinations of materials; practical applications in power transformers, switches, cables, mountings and feedthrough insulators, etcetera Design procedures The lecture series Hoogspanning I, II and III are intended for engineers (TU/HBO) in electrotechnical engineering or physics, who are involved in the testing and/or design of high-voltage equipment and/or asset management. These lectures treat the physics of several popular permanent magnet based linear motor types (short and long stroke) as drive in precision technology, design methods and the relevant control engineering aspects. Examples in the course are based on electrical drives in the semi-conductor industry. The performance of a mechatronic system depends on the weakest components in the loop and the electrical drive might be involved. You will learn the weak spots and opportunities of electrical linear drives and how the performance of the motor is influenced by the power amplifier. After the lecture, you will be capable to analyze why a motor design has to be improved for a high precision. VAT (incl. book) The main objective is to introduce the basic design methods of electrical machines with the finite element approach. The treatment of the structural, electromagnetic and parametric design of electrical machines is provided by means of finite element computer programs (Ansoft Co - Maxwell 2D and RMxprt FEM solvers). VAT Inhoud De volgende onderwerpen komen aan de orde: De bidirectionele chopper als basisschakeling van de actuele vermogenselektronica. Toepassingen in pulsbreedte gemoduleerde DC/DC en DC/AC omzetters en versterkers. Modelvorming van PWM-geregelde vermogenscircuits, invloed van parasitaire effecten op nauwkeurigheid. Stroomregeling, numerieke simulatie in Matlab/ Simulink. Technieken voor beperken van verlies: resonante circuits, multilevel en interleaved circuits. Toepassing van fasevlaktechnieken voor analyse van resonante netwerken. Betrouwbaarheidsaspecten: mechanismen en berekeningen van levensduur. Magnetica: basistheorie, karakterisering van materialen, ferrieten, modellering, verliezen in kern en windingen, parasieten, veiligheidsaspecten, ontwerpvoorbeelden. Na afloop van deze collegeserie heeft u inzicht gekregen in de moderne componenten van de vermogenselektronica en hun toepassingen in diverse soorten omzetters. Doelgroep Deze collegeserie is bestemd voor ingenieurs (TU/ HBO) in de elektrotechniek of natuurkunde, die zich op de hoogte willen stellen van de moderne vermogenselektronica. Enige voorkennis van de vermogenselektronica en elektromagnetisme is gewenst. De vereiste basiskennis wordt wel in het collegedictaat herhaald, maar wordt niet tijdens het college behandeld. Master lecture serie: Control of rotating-field machines Dr. K. Boynov (TU ) 23, 30 April, 7, 21, 28 May, 4, 11 and 18 June excl. VAT The course presents the advanced control methods of electric drives for the most common types of electric machines: Direct current (DC) motors, Induction motors (IM), Synchronous motors (SM) and Permanent Magnet Brushless DC (PMBLDC) motors.

4 The multilevel structure of the control system with electric machines is explained in a consequent-iterative way. After the course, you will be able to describe the transient behavior of the different types of electric machines by means of the systems of ordinary differential equations (ODE) with their further application to the system analysis and dedicated control synthesis. The obtained theoretical knowledge together with practical (MATLAB/Simulink modelling) experience would play an essential role in understanding of the integration and linking of the electric machines theory with control system theory. Engineers (TU or HBO with experience) in electrical engineering. Master lecture serie: Microwave engineering Prof.dr.ir. B. Smolders (TU ) 5, 12, 26 February, 5, 12, 19, 26 March and 2 April excl. VAT Within the domain of electrical engineering there is a growing interest in microwave engineering. Next to traditional application areas, such as wireless and radar, microwave engineering has become eminent in several new application domains, such as medical applications (e.g. MRI scanner) and high-speed IC and PCB design. The course will focus on distributed circuit analysis and design. Microwave computer-aided design (CAD) software will be used in the various assignments and the students will also learn how to use a Vector Network Analyser (VNA). Cobben (TU ) 23 en 24 april excl. btw (incl. lunches) Inhoud De kwaliteit van zowel spanning als stroom bepaalt in grote mate de goede werking van installaties en netten. Grote vervormingen in de stroom zullen leiden tot een verkorte levensduur van componenten, mogelijke overbelasting of minimaal een vermindering van de capaciteit. Vervormingen in de spanning kunnen naast overbelasting ook leiden tot ongewenste uitschakeling van componenten (en dus processen). Uit onderzoek is gebleken dat de kosten van onvoldoende kwaliteit van spanning en stroom hoog zijn. De cursus geeft inzicht in de bronnen die de kwaliteit van stroom en spanning verminderen, de bijbehorende problemen en de mogelijke oplossingen. Nieuwe technologieën zoals elektrisch vervoer, nieuwe type verlichting en zonnepanelen hebben hun eigen karakteristieken ten aanzien van gevoeligheid voor spanningsvervorming en hun eigen stroomkarakteristieken (inschakelstromen, harmonische stromen). In deze cursus worden de diverse problemen met voorbeelden van deze nieuwe technologieën toegelicht. Doelgroep De cursus is bedoeld voor technici met basiskennis van de elektrotechniek bij netbeheerders, installatiebedrijven, inspectiebedrijven, meetbedrijven en industriële bedrijven die betrokken zijn bij het ontwerp of bedrijfsvoering van netten of installaties. Actuation and power electronics s Course dates Dr.ir. A. Rankers and prof.ir. R. Munnig Schmidt (The High Tech Institute) 16, 17 and 18 March excl. VAT (incl. book and lunches) Life without motion is unimaginable. This statement is also valid in the production industry. Electromechanical actuators are the work horses within the industry, and determine the quality of many industrial processes. In this course, the fundamentals of electro-mechanics (electro magnetism and electro statics), different actuator concepts and their impact on system level will all be covered. The theory and practical implications of power electronics will also be expounded because they are indispensable for an optimal functionality of the actuator itself. Aspects of actuator selection/ development for short stroke or long stroke linear actuation will be treated and a special multi-dof actuator will be discussed. Participants will acquire a mix of theoretical background, do s and don ts and practical insight that is useful when designing mechatronic systems with different actuators. Mechatronic system designers and architects who are involved in the multi-disciplinary development of motion devices and need a better insight into the various aspects of actuators in order to make an adequate selection of available off-the-shelf components or initiate, specify and guide the development of a customized actuator. VAT Miniaturization and/or integration of more and more functionality in products cause(s) a significant increase in power density and therefore higher temperature levels in products. High temperatures have a negative impact on performance, reliability and safety. Because early knowledge of potential thermally related problems is imperative to reduce redesigns and time-to-market, thermal management should be integrated in the product design process. The final half day of the course is spent on a case study during which the thermal know-how is applied. Engineers (electronic and mechanical) directly involved with thermal design and cooling of electronic components, modules and systems, engineers confronted with thermal problems/issues, or those who simply want to understand and learn more about this important subject.

Een directe relatie zal worden gelegd naar de rol, de taken en de mogelijkheden van de netbedrijven in het kader van de huidige wetgeving. Doelgroep Ingenieurs, werkzaam op het gebied van de elektrische energietechniek, die hun kennis op het gebied van planning, ontwerp en bedrijfsvoering van elektriciteitsnetten willen aanvullen of vernieuwen. Daarnaast is de cursus geschikt voor niet-technici en beleidsmedewerkers die inzicht willen krijgen in de opbouw en werking van het elektriciteitsnetten in de geliberaliseerde energievoorziening. Electrical machines and drives Dr.ir. H. Polinder (TU ) Course dates 3 lectures in the second part of 2015 The course covers different types of electrical machines and drives. It is intended to give an overview and a basic understanding of the steady-state performance of these machines. Maxwell s equations are applied to the electric and magnetic circuits of electrical machines to derive voltage equations and equivalent circuits. The course covers DC machines, induction machines, synchronous machines, switched reluctance machines, brushless DC machines and single-phase machines. Different types of power electronic converters to drive the machines and different types of mechanical loads are discussed. Engineers who want to obtain a better understanding of the basic operating principles of electrical machines.
