2 Hierbij nodigen wij U uit voor de Poppy Day Remembrance op het Brits Militair Kerkhof in Brunssum. Deze vindt plaats op zondag 11 november, de 100ste verjaardag van het einde van de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Het British War Cemetery in Brunssum telt 328 graven van soldaten die in 1944/1945 in de omgeving van Brunssum zijn gesneuveld. Jaarlijks worden hier op 11 november de slachtoffers herdacht van de Eerste Wereldoorlog, de Great War, maar ook de slachtoffers van alle oorlogen en gewapende conflicten sindsdien. De herdenkingsplechtigheid op zondag 11 november start om 10.00uur. Ook dit jaar hebben wij enkele speciale gasten op bezoek! Graag nodigen wij U allen uit om samen met ons Poppy Day te vieren, om daarmee eer te betonen aan hen die in de oorlog vielen. Stichting War Cemetery Brunssum On behalf of the foundation War Cemetery Brunssum we cordially invite you for the annual Poppy Day Remembrance, on the British War Cemetery in Brunssum. This occasion will take place on Sunday November 11, 2018, the 100th anniversary of the Great War Armistice. The British War Cemetery is one of the largest British War Cemeteries in the region. Since many years the cemetery is the site for the Poppy Day Remembrance, during which we pay respects to those who fell in the Graet War, as well as those who gave their lives in every armed conflict since then. 4 WORLD WAR II Veterans visit Brunssum Recently, on 19 september, Edward Burke visited Brunssum. Edward Burke is an American. He was 74 years ago even though in Brunssum. Then as Commander of an American tank unit that was involved in the liberation of Limburg. In front of the camera of the 98-yearold Burke now City Journal brings the memories of his stay in Brunssum: the hospitality of the "charity nuns", the showers of the Hendrik... He hopes to be back next year, if Brunssum celebrates 75 years liberation.

5 WO II Veteranen bezoeken Brunssum Onlangs, op 19 september, bezocht Edward Burke Brunssum. Edward Burke is een Amerikaan. 74 jaar geleden was hij ook al in Brunssum. Toen als commandant van een Amerikaanse tank-eenheid die betrokken was bij de bevrijding van Limburg. Voor de camera van het stadsjournaal haalt de nu 98-jarige Burke herinneringen op aan zijn verblijf in Brunssum: de gastvrijheid van de charity nuns, de douches van de Hendrik Hij hoopt er volgend jaar weer bij te zijn, als Brunssum op grootse wijze 75 jaar bevrijding viert.

6 Service of Remembrance Lancaster Bomber R5701 5th October 2018 Nieuwsbrief - Newsletter Welcome We are gathered here today to remember before God the crew of Lancaster bomber R5701 of number 97 Squadron Royal Air Force, which crashed here on 5th October 1942 killing all 7 crew members on board. Lancaster R5701 took off from RAF Woodhall Spa at 19.11hours on 5th October for a bombing raid on Aachen. Her crew were experienced, having flown numerous missions over the preceding year. The least experienced member of the crew had flown 21 missions, and the pilot 35. All apart from the wireless operator had flown at least 16 missions with their pilot. The night of 5th October saw very poor weather conditions, with thunderstorms and heavy icing. They also encountered heavy flak and night fighters over the southern Netherlands. R5701 and her crew never made it home, but came down close to this site here in Brunssum at hours, the cause of the crash has been attributed to a German aircraft from German Airbase Sint Truiden who claimed to have shot down a Halifax in the area. After a thorough investigation, no Halifax had been reported missing, so it was most likely that it was Lancaster R5701. Today we pay tribute to her crew, and remember that they made the ultimate sacrifice whilst flying into the heart of enemy territory for their country and of course of freedom. On this 76th anniversary of the crash we name them: Flying Officer: Neville Briant DFC Flying Officer: Leslie Dorward DFC RAAF Flying Officer: Kenneth Harrison DFM Sergeant: John Dawson Sergeant: Augustus Desmond Sergeant: Kenneth MacKay DFM Sergeant: Albert Musgrave These men have their final earthly resting place at Jonkerbos cemetery, near Nijmegen

12 Zondag 12 augustus bezocht een delegatie van de Royal Engineers Association uit Engeland Brunssum. Ook was de familie Tarrant aanwezig, wiens oom als Royal Engineer in Brunssum begraven ligt. De groep bezocht eerst Tripsrath, net over de Duitse grens bij Geilenkirchen waar bij een explosie met het ruimen van landmijnen meerdere Royal Engineers omkwamen. Hierna toog men naar Brunssum waar men ontvangen werd door burgemeester Leers, welke de gasten een lunch aanbood en hierna een mooie plaquette in ontvangst mocht nemen. Ook waren onze beschermheer Dhr. Rex Thompson en Ere beschermeer Majoor Marco Kroon aanwezig. Na deze lunch werd de Awacs basis bezocht op wiens terrein de volgende explosie heeft plaatsgevonden in WO2. Bij het ruimen van Amerikaanse landmijnen kwamen ook hier meerdere Engineers om het leven. Na dit emotionele bezoek bezochten wij ons Brits kerkhof in Brunssum, de laatste rustplaats van de gesneuvelde Engineers. Hier werd een mis opgedragen aan de gevallen kameraden. De dag werd afgesloten met een gezellig samenzijn (diner) bij Gastronomie Smeets te Merkelbeek, welk werd aangeboden door de stichting War Cemetery Brunssum.
