1 Newsletter/Nieuwsbrief November 2016 Dear Parents and carers, Welcome to our November newsletter. Weather wise we have had a lovely start to the school year. The clocks have now changed and the shorter days are now here. The weather will start to get colder soon. Please ensure that your children come to school well wrapped up on the colder days and that all their outdoor clothing has their name in it. Staffing We are pleased to inform you that following the retirement of Eric Stins we have employed Andrew Ramanoop who will work as an ICT technician across the ID and NA five days a week. Andrew will help us continue to grow and develop in this area. Sinterklaas November is the month that the Sinterklaas celebrations begin. He arrives in The Netherlands on Saturday 12 th November. We will celebrate in school as usual on Monday 5 th December. The children will go home at 12:30 Beste ouders, verzorgers, Hierbij de nieuwsbrief van november. Bij de start van het schooljaar was er nog sprake van heel mooi weer. Dat is nu wel anders. Het verzetten van de klok maakt dat de dagen nog korter lijken. Zorgt u ervoor dat uw kinderen warm en goed zichtbaar gekleed zijn, vooral in het verkeer. Personeel Afgelopen zomer is Eric Stins gaan genieten van zijn pensioen. Zijn taken als ICT man zijn overgenomen door Andrew Ramanoop. Een ICT technicus die ons de hele week kan ondersteunen. Sinterklaas Deze maand, op zaterdag 12 november komt hij in Nederland aan. Op school hopen we dat hij op 5 december ons weer een bezoek zal brengen. Op deze dag gaan de kinderen om al uit. 2 From Admissions We are already busy preparing the offer of places for the reception class. If you have a younger sibling at home that is not yet registered with our admissions office, we would ask that you do this as soon as possible. Siblings are always given priority; however it is essential that an application form has been completed for them. Application forms can be downloaded from our website and ed to the admissions office. Secondary School Transfer for ID6 Pupils in The Hague We are looking forward to seeing our Year 5 and 6 parents at our Secondary Schools Information Evening on Tuesday November 8 th at 18:30. The heads from the International School of The Hague, Het Rijnlands Lyceum in Oestgeest and the European School of The Hague will present information about their school to parents. PLEASE NOTE THIS YEAR THE MEETING IS BEING HELD AT OUR VNS LOCATION. If you have a child in Year 6 and are intending for them to apply for a secondary school in The Hague, now is the time for you to make your application. OAC donation for Library The Parent Activity Committee donated 250 euros each to the Dutch and International Departments for their library. This support is greatly appreciated. Charity Shoe Box Buddies We will also again be supporting Edukans Schoenmaatjes Appeal (Shoe Box Buddies). Across HSV in 2015, we donated 268 shoe boxes as well as 1244 as donation to help with shipping costs and we would like to improve this total this year if we can. There are many children in the world in need. Things that you might include in your shoe are toiletries, stationery, small toys etc. If you want to find out more about the appeal visit schoenmaatjes.edukans.nl. From the MR In the last MR meeting, at the beginning of October, arrangements for the election of new parent MR members (for the Dutch department and for the VNS location) were discussed. There are three candidates for the Dutch department and one for VNS. The visit of the school inspector to all three international locations was also discussed. The inspector s report is not yet out but he was very happy and positive after his visit. Donatie De OuderActiviteitenCommissie heeft ons erg blij gemaakt met een donatie van 250 voor uitbreiding van de bibliotheek. Actie Schoenmaatje Ook dit jaar doen we mee met de actie Schoenmaatje van Edukans. Gezamenlijk hebben we vorig jaar 268 schoenendozen en 1244 bijeengebracht. Het geld werd besteed aan het transporteren van de schoenendozen. Dit jaar gaan we proberen deze getallen te verbeteren. Veel kinderen in de wereld kunnen onze steun goed gebruiken. In de dozen kunt u naast schoolspulletjes ook enkele toiletartikelen doen. Meer weten: MR voor de Newsbrief Tijdens de laatste MR vergadering op 3 oktober werden de verkiezingen voor nieuwe MR leden (om de ouders te vertegenwoordigen) besproken. De MR heeft twee nieuwe leden nodig: voor de Nederlandse afdeling en voor VNS. Er zijn drie kandidaten voor de NA en dat betekent dat er binnen kort verkiezingen zullen worden gehouden. Er wordt ook gesproken over het bezoek van de school inspecteur aan alle drie locaties van de internationale afdeling. Zijn rapport is nog niet beschikbaar maar hij was duidelijk heel tevreden en positief na zijn bezoek.

3 Nassaulaan News Traffic Safety: functioning lights on bicycles The darker mornings are here. Make sure all pupils have functioning lights on their bicycles to make sure they are visible on the dark mornings. Once again as poorer weather conditions approach we ask all members of the school community to exercise extreme care coming to school and leaving school. 2HSV The 2HSV auction dinner will take place in May 2017! This is the big fundraiser for our school. Last year more than Euro was raised to make the sports field on the playground. This year all gains will go to education on coding/ programming for our children at HSV/ Nassaulaan. Programming is the skill of the future. Programming is not yet part of the curriculum at HSV, that is why a budget is not available. Only as from 2019 programming will be mandatory in Dutch primary schools. We think it is important though that our kids move ahead, now and in the future. For this we need your help! Do you have a holiday home, can you do a tour, prepare a nice dinner etc. etc. and would you like to auction this off, please let us know through info@2hsv.nl. In January 2017 we will send out a questionnaire through which you can also donate items. Click for more info. Kind regards, Flora Dullea & Frans de Jong NassaulaanNieuws Veiligheid, licht op je fiets Met deze donkere ochtenden is het van groot belang goed zichtbaar te zijn voor het overige verkeer. Opnieuw vragen we u erg voorzichtig te zijn met name in het stuk Nassaulaan naar de school toe. Laten we allen waakzaam en oplettend zijn en zo een veilige weg naar school maken. 2HSV In mei 2017 vindt het 2HSV veilingdiner plaats! Dit is de grote fondsenwerf actie voor onze school. Vorig jaar is er meer dan Euro opgehaald, waarmee het sportveld op het schoolplein is bekostigd. Dit jaar zal de opbrengst ten goede komen aan het programmeer/ict onderwijs op de HSV/ Nassaulaan. De media staat er vol mee, programmeren is de skill van de toekomst. Programmeren is nu nog geen deel van het huidige curriculum van de HSV en daarom is er nog geen budget hiervoor bij de school. (Vanaf 2019 is de school verplicht om dit aan te bieden) Wij vinden het van belang dat onze kinderen hierin, nu en in de toekomst, voorop lopen. Hiervoor hebben we de hulp van de HSV-gemeenschap hard nodig! Kun je een mooi diner voorbereiden, heb je een leuk vakantiehuis, kun je een rondleiding verzorgen, heb je kaartjes voor een concert enz. enz. en wil je dit laten veilen t.b.v. programmeer/ict onderwijs op de HSV, geef dit dan graag door opinfo@2hsv.nl. Ook krijgen jullie de gelegenheid items aan te melden via een enquete die 2HSV jullie in januari stuurt. Klik voor meer info. Kerstconcerten & Kerstdiner Hieronder staan de data waarop u van harte welkom bent om het kerstconcert van de klas van uw kind bij te wonen. De laatste vrijdag zijn de kinderen dus ook al vrij. Studiedagen Onze volgende studiedag is woensdag 23 november. De kinderen van de groepen 1 t/m 4 zijn dan vrij.

5 THE MONTH IN NSL On Wednesday October 26th, we celebrated the unveiling of the Emily Dickenson poem on our newly painted exterior wall. Many thanks to all those who participated and attended the event.

6 The focus of book week this year was Omas and Opas. Thank you to all of the grandparents who came and read stories throughout the week. The book sales of old and new also took place during the same week. Asha from ID4 and Saskia from NA7 were lucky enough to meet the Dutchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton while she was visiting The Hague.

7 During October and early November, each child planted a flower bulb in our school garden. Mrs. Dean explained that the roots go into the soil and absorb water and nutrients necessary for the bulb and plant to grow. The extra nutrients and water are stored in the fleshy scales, which makes up the bulk of the bulb. The children then made sure that their bulb was facing the correct direction when they planted. You can see which bulb type your child planted by visiting the garden near the front gate. We look forward seeing the garden in full bloom next Spring While planting flower bulbs, children also harvested the last of the vegetables this season
