In 1831 he met the businessman Antonio Barezzi who gave him the chance to further his musical development. He studied the organ and piano in Busseto under Ferdinando Provesi. When he was refused admission to the academy in Milan an institution that now bears his name! the operatic composer Vinzenzo Lavigna accepted him as a pupil for composition and orchestra. For a short time Verdi led the Busseto city orchestra and composed instrumental work for it. After his marriage to Margherita Barezzi in 1836 he composed his first opera, which was probably lost or rewritten. Between 1838 and 1839 he lost both his children. In 1839 he made his debut as an operatic composer with Oberto, Conte di San Bonifacio. Barely a year after that his wife died. He scored so many successes with the soprano Giuseppina Strepponi ( ) that he received three new commissions. The first was the comic opera Il Finto Stanislan operas inquest from the Khedive of Egypt to compose an opera. The result was Aïda. Following Aïda came the great Requiem (1874), which he was inspired to write by the death of Manzoni, the poet and fellow freedom fighter. Together with his last two operas, Otello (1887 after Shakespeare) and Falstaff (1893 after Shakespeare), both to libretti by Arrigo Boito, this work is among his most mature creations. The opera Otello brought Italian music drama to an unprecedented level. Falstaff signified a high point in the genre of opera buffo.
