Behalve de titel van een bekend Nederlands praatprogramma en een Belgisch radioprogramma van lichte muziek, is De Wereld Draait Door de titel van Danny Matthys recente werk. De reeks kwam tot stand na de terugkomst van een reis naar Tanzania en past daarmee binnen de overkoepelende werkenreeks World and Travels. Matthys oeuvre is doordrongen van de reizen die de kunstenaar maakte. De herinneringen die tijdens deze reizen werden opgedaan, zijn niet enkel die van de kunstenaar zelf. Het zijn ook de inherente herinneringen die de plaatsen die bezocht werden in zich meedragen. Deze plaatsen zijn geïmpregneerd van geschiedenis. In Tracking Memories eveneens een reeks werken binnen World and Travels zijn de reiswegen overladen en zelfs bedekt met beelden uit de geschiedenis. Na lange tijd specifiek met Australië te zijn begaan geweest, keert de focus terug naar Afrika, een continent dat Danny Matthys samen met Hugo De Baere artistiek onderzocht heeft. Referenties naar Afrika zitten ook reeds zeer direct in Trophées de chasse ( ) onder de vorm van fotografie en collage. Karakteristiek voor Matthys oeuvre wordt er voortgebouwd op vroeger werk waarin het particuliere en het universele, het globale en het lokale, of nog, de onderlaag en de bovenlaag in een symbiose elkaar ontmoeten. In De Wereld Draait Door wordt Afrika herbezocht. Hier neemt een sterke aanwezigheid, namelijk de colon, de voorgrond in. Het eerder abstracte totaalbeeld uit Tracking Memories het netwerk van beeldreiswegen wordt haast tastbaar. Er wordt een spanning opgewekt tussen de abstracte beeldtaal en figuratieve elementen, maar er wordt geen concurrentie aangegaan tussen beide. Beide beeldvormen zijn evenwaardig en maken deel uit van eenzelfde geheel. As The World Turns Around, Danny Matthys most recent body of work, examines global present-day developments. This series of works came about after a trip to the African country of Tanzania. It is a part of the overarching theme of World and Travels. The many travels that Matthys undertook permeate his oeuvre. Memories that were accumulated during these travels encapsulated in the concept of Tracking Memories are not only those of the artist himself. They encompass also the inherent memories that those visited places carry within them. These places are impregnated with history. The travel tracks in Tracking Memories equally a series of works within World and Travels are loaded and even literally covered with images. After a long-time involvement with Australia, the gaze returns to Africa. This continent was explored artistically with Hugo De Baere in the 1980s. References to the black continent are explicitly present in Trophées de chasse ( ), a work consisting of photography and collage. Characteristically for Matthys oeuvre is the building on earlier work in which the particular and the universal, the under-layer and upper-layer, the centre and the periphery meet in symbiosis. Africa is revisited in As The World Turns Around. A strong presence the colon imposes itself in the foreground. The rather abstract total image of Tracking Memories, the network of travel image-tracks, becomes almost tangible. A tension between the abstract imagery and figurative elements arises, but both never become concurrent to one another. Both image forms are equal and are as such part of the same whole.
