12 VOORWOORD De onderzoeken die de basis vormen van dit proefschrift zijn uitgevoerd op en door de afdeling Hartrevalidatie van Beatrixoord Haren. Vanaf de aanvang van een hartrevalidatie programma in Beatrixoord was er een innige samenwerking met de afdeling Cardiologie van het Academisch Ziekenhuis te Groningen. Contacten met Bloemsingel 10 (toen Fysiologie) stammen tevens uit die periode. Eind jaren tachtig werd deze samenwerking, met inmiddels de werkgroep Bewegingswetenschappen, op wetenschappelijk gebied geïntensiveerd. Vanuit dit samenwerkingsverband werden een aantal pilot-studies verricht, hetgeen uitmondde in een grotere studie, die bekend werd onder de naam HERMES. Voor deze studie werd financiële ondersteuning verkregen van de Nederlandse Hartstichting. Om de wetenschappelijke basis te verstevigen van deze studie werd contact gelegd en later nauw samengewerkt met de vakgroep Sociale en Organisatie Psychologie en met het Noordelijk Centrum Gezondheidsvraagstukken. De studie werd deels mogelijk gemaakt door de goede samenwerking die ontstond met de afdeling Cardiologie van het Martini Ziekenhuis, maar uiteindelijk vooral door al de patiënten die meewerkten aan de studie.
