2015 UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships Presentation Heusden-Zolder We are on the eve of the 2015 UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships and the stage in Tabór is set. But even before the racing begins and the new World Champions for the year are crowned, I know for a certainty that a large number of people are already looking ahead to the 2016 UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships. That is because the staging of an event of this magnitude requires a great deal of preparation, meticulous planning and attention to detail. One year from now, the very best cyclo-cross athletes in the world will gather in Heusden-Zolder, Belgium, to ride for the chance to wear the World Champion s rainbow jersey. It goes without saying that athletes competing at this level require, indeed expect, exceptional conditions and facilities both on and off the race course. The event also attracts a very large number of fans and media representatives, all of whom need to be taken into consideration by the organisers of the World Championships. The awarding of the 2016 UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships to Heusden-Zolder was a no-risk decision. The Zolder circuit has a long and successful history of hosting UCI World Championships including for the road in 1969 and 2002, and for cyclo-cross in 1970 and 2002, when a certain Kevin Pauwels won the Junior Men s title. Since 2009, the famous motorcar circuit has hosted rounds of the UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup every year and has become an eagerly-awaited fixture on the World Cup calendar. The Heusden-Zolder round of the UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup is traditionally held on December 26 th, and next season will be no exception: at the end of 2015, the athletes will have a final chance to confront each other on the very circuit where they will battle for the world title just five weeks later. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Royale Ligue Velocipédique Belge and its President Tom Van Damme, as well as the UCI Cyclo-cross Commission President Mike Plant, both members of the UCI Management Committee. Indeed, my thanks go to all those involved in the organisation of this leading cyclo-cross event of the year. The RLVB has a long history of commitment and dedication to our sport and this continues with the organisation of the 2016 UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships. 1957 Edelare Frenchman André Dufraisse, winner of three successive world titles, started in Edelare as main favourite. Local hero Firmin Van Kerrebroeck refused to pre-accept the defeat which seemed inevitable and attacked in the initial phase of the race. The Belgian who would eventually win the silver medal was caught bij Dufraisse in the second round. The hilly and extremely muddy track the rain was pouring before and during the race obliged the peloton to run for two-thirds of the circuit, circumstances that suited the Frenchman way better than his Belgian opponent. Dufraisse s advantage at the finish was that big he could even take the time to pose for the photographers before crossing the line. 25.000 spectators showed up to see the very first world championship cyclocross on Belgian soil. Dufraisse s fellow countryman Georges Meunier ended up winning the bronze medal. 1964 Overboelare Belgian champion Roger De Clercq was the man to beat in Overboelare. Being from the region De Clercq lured a lot of spectators (about 20.000) to the world championships. Heavy rainfall turned the flooded circuit into a nightmare for most competitors but not for Renato Longo. The long-legged Italian literally ran to his third world title, pleasing not only himself but also his new team. A few weeks earlier Longo signed a contract with the famous Salvarani team, willing to compete in the spring classic Milano Sanremo. Prior to the world championships cyclocross in Overboelare his bosses told him he could qualify for the Primavera-squad if he won the rainbow jersey in Belgium. So he did. Longo countered an early attack by Great Britain Mernickle and soloed to victory. Belgian Roger De Clercq finished second, Frenchman Joseph Mahé third. 1970 Zolder The first real Belgian cyclocrossparty in history. Erik De Vlaeminck took his fourth world title in front of an enthousiastic home crowd. Albert Van Damme underlined the dominance of the Belgian squad by winning the silver medal. De Vlaeminck, Van Damme and Wolfshohl had a small advantage on the rest of the field starting the last lap. Both Belgian riders crashed once, their German opponent twice. The sprint between the two compatriotes was breathtaking, due to a mistake De Vlaeminck made. Being over-confident the Belgian cyclocross-star started celebrating his victory to early. Van Damme kept sprinting al the way to the finish line. The photofinish was needed to determine the outcome. The gap between De Vlaeminck and Van Damme? 1 centimeter! Wolfshohl was the third man on the podium, winning the bronze medal.
Lars Van der Haar Zolder 2014
1986 Lembeek The track in Lembeek had nothing to do with cyclocross. Due to heavy rainfall in the weeks leading up to the event the circuit was no longer suited to host an event of any kind. Defending world champion Klaus-Peter Thaler didn t even show up at the start and Roland Liboton, the superstar of cyclocross in the eighties, abandoned the race in the third lap. Albert Zweifel didn t mind. The 36-year old Swiss four times world champion was smart enough to use special running shoes and soloed to victory. His compatriot Pascal Richard crossed the line winning the silver medal, Dutch rider Hennie Stamsnijder ended up third. 1994 Koksijde Up to 20.000 spectators showed up for the world championships in the sand dunes of Koksijde. Paul Herijgers absolutely adored the very specific track on the coastline and skipped the Belgian championships three weeks prior in order to be in top shape in Koksijde. A sacrifice that paid off. Herijgers, the winner of three World Cup races earlier that season, countered Richard Groenendaal s early attack, tapped the Dutchman on the shoulder whilst passing him and stormed to victory. Groenendaal took second place, Belgian Erwin Vervecken was the third man to climb on the podium. 2002 Zolder Nearly 60.000 fans cheering for a bunch of cyclocrossers? Welcome to Belgium! Zolder 2002 was a big succes for Belgian cycling. The party on the race circuit in Terlamen started with Kevin Pauwels winning the junior title and Davy Commeyne ending up second (Ducthman Thijs Verhagen became world champion) in the U23 race. But all hell broke loose during the elite race with Mario De Clercq taking the world title, young Tom Vannoppen winning silver and Sven Nys taking the bronze medal. The perfect farewell for Erik De Vlaeminck, the Belgian national coach who left his job to his assistant Rudy De Bie.

2007 Hooglede-Gits A race that went down in history. Considered as the most spectacular cyclocross ever on Belgian soil. An elite race packed with incidents, crashes and position switches. The allmighty Belgian squad encountered heaps of bad luck in front of a delirious home crowd. So outsiders like Jonathan Page and Enrico Franzoi rose to the occasion. The American rider had the world title up for grabs but was countered in the very last lap by Erwin Vervecken. The former world champion used the very last obstacle in the race to get rid of Page. Italy s Enrico Franzoi took the bronze medal. 2012 Koksijde Orange was the dominant colour in Koksijde with Mathieu van der Poel (juniors), Lars van der Haar (U23) and Marianne Vos all winning rainbow jerseys for the Netherlands. But the Belgian squad took revenge in the elite race. The seven Belgian riders on the start list became the numbers one to seven in the final result. Sand Devil Niels Albert won his second world title in Koksijde, Rob Peeters was happy with his silver medal and Kevin Pauwels ended up third. A fantastic performance greeted enthousiasticly by 61.000 fans lining the circuit in the sand dunes of Koksijde.
