The fortunate ones that were selected by the jury to participate, will not only come to to compete for prizes, but will also meet as colleagues. Experience has shown that they make close friendships during the competition and often initiate interesting collaboration projects. The warm and cosy atmosphere in which our appreciated host families even go the extra mile, is truly inspiring. Welcoming laureates and renowned artists in the jury and on stage at the same time, becomes the vibrant percussion capital of the world these weeks! Wishing all of our participants the best of luck and to everyone a wonderful and inspiring event, Opnieuw meldden zich voor deze 24e editie van het TROMP concours meer dan honderd jonge slagwerktalenten uit de hele wereld aan. De gelukkigen die door de jury werden geselecteerd om ook daadwerkelijk deel te nemen, zullen hier in niet alleen strijden voor de prijzen, maar ontmoeten elkaar ook als collega s. Onze ervaring leert dat zij tijdens het concours hechte vriendschappen sluiten en vaak ook bijzondere samenwerkingsprojecten bedenken. Theo Tromp founded the Tromp Biennial in in 1970 because he felt talented young musicians had not enough opportunities. Almost fifty years later TROMP has become the leading competition for solo percussion in the world, the ideals of its founder close at heart, creating opportunities and a stage for young percussionists from around the world. TROMP s membership of the World Federation of International Music Competitions (WFIMC), which can only be obtained by invitation, reflects a global recognition for this reputable competition. Dr. Ir. Both the team and management are honoured to present to you a year of activities, concerts and of course percussion talent from all over the globe. TROMP 2018 barst uit zijn voegen. Het is het team en bestuur een enorm genoegen om u dit jaar activiteiten, concerten en natuurlijk slagwerktalenten van over de hele wereld te kunnen bieden. A beautiful quote from the Greek philosopher Plato. That is what music does. Those secret places are different for everyone. The way music moves you, depends on the moment and the stories in your heart. Music offers entertainment, inspiration, exaltation, it touches and comforts, and thereby often affects your mood. According to research, the meaning of music transcends words, images and scents. This is because our brains are highly sensitive in terms of recognising patterns such as sounds and vibrations. A lot of people will be moved again this year, by performances of the world s greatest percussion talent during the biannual TROMP competition and festival. They have come to from all over the globe 15 different countries to treat both audience and jury to the best performances they ve got. I wish all the participants the best of luck! In addition, the audience will enjoy concerts by famous artists and percussionists. The remarkable Opening Night will feature percussion virtuoso Dominique Vleeshouwers, Austrian percussion soloist Martin Grubinger, the breakdance group The Ruggeds and Harmonie St. Michaël van Thorn, who will bridge the gap between classical music and urban street culture. Breakdance becomes ballet and a symphonic wind orchestra is transformed into a hiphop orchestra. A city like is all about transformation. This is going to be unforgettable! Er zullen ook dit jaar weer veel mensen geraakt worden door de optredens van s werelds grootste slagwerktalenten tijdens het tweejaarlijkse TROMP concours en festival. Vanuit heel de wereld uit 15 verschillende landen zijn ze in om hun beste performance te geven voor publiek en jury. Ik wens alle deelnemers veel succes! Daarnaast genieten toeschouwers van concerten van bekende artiesten en slagwerkers. The topnotch talents who undergo our TROMP competition, form a close bond every time. They are often seen the year after, sometimes in the same competition, other times performing at the festival, but also returning as teachers and sources of inspiration for our educational activities. The TROMP Repertoire Days, organised from Tokyo to São Paulo, from Boston to Moscow, and of course in Amsterdam as well, are all designed by laureates from multiple editions. They support the candidates and share their experiences with regards to setting up a professional practice. Successful and nudged in the right direction, in part, thanks to TROMP. Over the past fifteen years composers including Louis Andriessen, Bryce Dessner, Nico Muhly, Joey Roukens, Michael Torke, Steve Martland and Jacob ter Veldhuis have written new pieces for percussion commissioned by TROMP. Met compositieopdrachten aan toonaangevende componisten blijft TROMP het nog jonge repertoire voor klassiek soloslagwerk iedere editie vernieuwen en verrijken. DANÍEL BJARNASON Daníel Bjarnason composed the new mandatory final work, to be performed by the three finalists with Asko Schönberg, the leading Dutch ensemble for new music. Bjarnason is a multitalented composer, conductor and curator and works with indiebands (Sigur Rós, Efterklang) as well as orchestras like the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Daníel Bjarnason is composerinresidence at. His Concerto for Solo Percussion and Ensemble places the soloist in a setup of diverse percussion instruments, with drums of the percussionist s choice, in which the marimba plays a virtuosic central role. She received commissions from Slagwerk Den Haag, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and Eighth Blackbird among others and was awarded with the Matthijs Vermeulen Price of Encouragement 2003, Anjer Muziekprijs 2005, Kees van Baarenprijs 2015 and an artistinresidence fellowship in Berlin by the DAAD. Cinderella plays with the illusion of someone trying to dance on high heels. Mayke Nas, Componist des Vaderlands van 2016 t/m 2018, schreef het nieuwe verplichte werk Cinderella voor de Halve Finale. Ze ontving opdrachten van o.a. 26 TROMP Percussion 2018 27 JURY MEMBERS Juryleden Michael Burritt USA Verenigde Staten Michael Burritt is a member of the Percussive Arts Society Board of Directors, a contributing editor for Percussive Notes Magazine and the chairman of the PAS Keyboard Committee. He is currently Professor of Percussion and head of the department at The Eastman School of Music. His works for solo marimba have become standard repertoire, with commissions by The World Marimba Competition in Stuttgart and Third Coast Percussion. As a soloist Burritt performed with renowned orchestras, including the Dallas Wind Symphony, Omaha Symphony, Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra, Richmond Symphony Orchestra and Ju Percussion Group. Michael Burritt is lid van de Raad van Bestuur van de Percussive Arts Society, schrijft voor het Percussive Notes Magazine en is de voorzitter van het PAS Keyboard Committee. She won the Luxembourg International Marimba competition, was chosen as one of The Top Ten Young Artists Today by the Toyota Foundation and awarded the Azalea Cultural Prize of Kawasaki City. She performed with major orchestras throughout Japan and abroad, released five recordings on the Phillips label and Pieces of Peace on the Classic Concert label in 2011. As a student, he performed with the OperaSymphony Orchestra of Radio & TV Moscow, later joined the Moscow Ensemble of Early Music Madrigal. In 1976 he founded the first Russian percussion ensemble, with a choice of 200 scores composed for the ensemble by several generations of Russian composers. A catalyst for Russian composers' creative activity, according to The Berlin Newspaper Tagesspiegel. Pekarksy also started the famous Pekarsky Percussion Project devoted to the problems of modern percussion repertoire in 2000. Since 1997 Mark Pekarsky is a professor at the Moscow Conservatory. All entries will be performed by fellow students in the TROMP festival November 15. A winner is selected immediately after the concert by an expert jury including the chairman of the TROMP board Marijn ten Harmsen van der Beek, Davo van Peursen of Donemus publishing and composers Janco Verduin and Mayke Nas, who wrote the compulsory work for the semifinals of the TROMP competition. TROMP composition competition Hoger Muziekonderwijs Jonge componisten die studeren aan Nederlandse conservatoria gaan de uitdaging aan en schrijven nieuw werk voor percussie. Alle inzendingen worden tijdens TROMP op 15 november uitgevoerd door medestudenten. De winnaar van de TROMP compositieprijs wordt direct na het gekozen door een vakjury met o.a. TROMP bestuursvoorzitter Marijn ten Harmsen van der Beek, Davo van Peursen van uitgeverij Donemus en componisten Janco Verduin en Mayke Nas die het verplichte werk voor de halve finale van het TROMP concours schreef. Youth Jury Secondary education College students from the Lorentz Casimir Lyceum in choose their own winner during the TROMP competition. Five students get instructions from the chairman of the international expert jury. They follow the participants throughout the competition and write a jury report for each candidate. In the Finale the youth jury awards their winner with 'The Annelie', worth e 1.000 made available by the Friends of TROMP. Jeugdjury Middelbaar onderwijs Leerlingen van het Lorentz Casimir Lyceum in kiezen tijdens het TROMP concours hun eigen favoriet. Ze volgen de deelnemers vanaf het begin van het concours en schrijven voor iedere kandidaat een juryrapport. In de Finale reiken zij 'De Annelie' uit ten waarde van e 1.000, mogelijk gemaakt door de Vrienden van TROMP. Rhythmix Primary school TROMP is committed to the development of repertoire and the recruitment of young talent. For educational activities TROMP works with local partners CKE, Cultuurstation, Fort van de Verbeelding, Kekketek, Percussion Friends and the South Netherlands Philharmonic. TROMP is also part of an international network of percussion teachers in conservatories. TROMP Percussion maakt zich sterk voor de ontwikkeling van slagwerkers, repertoire en nieuwe aanwas van talenten in de dop. Primary school Freedom is a hot topic at the moment, with refugees and freedom of speech. Language often plays an important role in the matter. Music, and above all percussion, is an ancient language that everyone can speak and understand without much difficulty. The educational project Drum je vrij! by Percussion Friends in collaboration with TROMP, connects, stimulates cooperation and provides insight into other cultures. Drum je vrij! Basisschool Vrijheid is een onderwerp dat momenteel zeer actueel is, met vluchtelingen en de vrijheid van meningsuiting. Taal is daarbij vaak belangrijk. Muziek, bovenal slagwerk, is een oeroude taal die iedereen kan spreken en begrijpen zonder veel moeite. Het educatieve project Drum je vrij!, samengesteld door Stichting Percussion Friends in samenwerking met TROMP, verbindt, stimuleert samenwerking en geeft inzicht in andere culturen. In preparation for the philharmonie zuidnederland concert with Percossa in the TROMP 2018 festival, Percussion Friends provided extra workshops at schools in a short version of the Drum je vrij! educational project. The concert is a spectacular conclusion, to which the students make an active contribution. A live show full of action, reaction and with music by composers such as Ravel, Shostakovich and Kabalevsky. Rhythmix Basisschool Als voorbereiding op het concert van philharmonie zuidnederland met Percossa in het TROMP 2018 festival gaf Percussion Friends een extra workshop op school in een verkorte versie van het programma Drum je vrij!. Het concert is de spetterende afsluiting waaraan de leerlingen een actieve bijdrage leveren. Een muzikale live show vol actie en reactie en met muziek van componisten als Ravel, Sjostakovitsj en Kabalevski. Schoolyard Orchestra Primary school The TROMP Schoolyard Orchestra of Fort van de Verbeelding involves children to make music with unusual instruments like cement tubs, tuned scaffolding pipes, tuned beer bottles, shakers, tubes and boards. These will be combined with singing, rapping, clapping and beating. The children give a performance in a schoolyard concert for an audience of parents, neighbours and friends. Schoolplein Orkest Basisschool Het Schoolplein Orkest van Fort van de Verbeelding wordt uitgevoerd met ongebruikelijke muziekinstrumenten zoals cementkuipen, gestemde steigerpijpen, gestemde bierflessen, shakers, klapkokers en klankplanken. Daarnaast wordt er gezongen, gerapt, geklapt en gestampt. In het 'schoolpleinconcert' geven de kinderen een show voor ouders, buren en bekenden.

This circle of friends has become even closer since 1986, when it formed an official foundation with the main objective of stimulating interest in the TROMP Competition and Festival. This is partly achieved by making various prizes available, such as the Audience Award. Many Friends of TROMP ensure that the competition participants receive a warm welcome in and that they are able to stay with a welcoming host family for the duration of the event.
